Here's a fun one for thought: Phelan or even McClaren for manager, and, not one, but two assistants in Giggs and Ole.

Before I get shot, hear me out.

Phelan's watched and seen how SAF works, he's spent a season and, next season, it'll be two seasons as Assistant. He knows the team well.

McClaren, he's done his study in absolutely making England look like shit, but he was the assistant manager when we won the Treble. He's also doing well as manager of FC Twente, isn't he?

Giggs and Ole, well, one is training to be a manager, and the other has spent the season in reserves, coaching to 20 wins in 24 matches, from what I hear. Giggs has been with SAF the whole time, he has a deep insight into other teams, knows how to play against them on the pitch, and if not, then more likely than not, Phelan, McClaren or Ole will have learnt enough from their experience to know how to win against our unknown opposition.

We'll win the league, easy, the FA Cup, perhaps, the League Cup, easy, but in Europe, it might take a season or two of getting kicked out in the quarterfinals by the traditional powerhouses of the Champions League, but we'll be there in the final in perhaps two years after SAF retires, with a great system of management, and more than that, with people that we actually want as our managers.

That, or, we can always give TNSSO the job, and give him a managerial position with Giggs as an assistant. Don't know if his ego can take it though, with an assistant that thinks so fundamentally different. Giggs would be all youth, he *came* from the youth policy, TNSSO is all about buying players, don't know how he treated Kalou, but from what I hear, Kalou's decent. TNSSO is all defence, little attack, Giggsy is all attack, and, well... he's more balanced than TNSSO's policy in attack/defence.

It's a tough job, replacing a one-of-a-kind, so why not replace the one-of-a-kind with more than one guy?

I have one major worry for SAF leaving. Now, we have a massive squad full of internationals and quality at every position, but yet, how often do you hear players complaining about playing time or minutes?? I think that is one of the best qualities in SAF, the players don't question it, and if they do, they don't bitch and moan about it in public. But, if David Moyes comes in, or someone of that elk, I can see it happening more often. If Moyes had the balls to drop Ronaldo after a string of shit performances, do you think Ronaldo would take it laying down? Fuck no. Thats what scares me, the unrest in the dressing room and the drama and complaining and shit mix that could come with it.

Remember the I'm on Setanta Sports episode where Sven is touting himself senseless for the Sunderland job?
Why do I get a sense of deja vu?

@Denton Davey-but his record isn’t any better than Wee Gordie Strachan, who looks the business at Celtic but never did much at Southampton

Anybody could manage Celtic including me or you and still win the SPL, but under Strachan Celtic have taken a few steps backwards! My call would be for Martin O'Neill or David Moyes!

Depending on how long before SAF actually retires I hope to see Ole. 4 defeats in 24 in his first season as reserve manager is not bad going. "4 defeats too many" was his qoute after the Boro game. Quality. Too early to judge yet really.

"half of me says eff of Jose! the other half says who else could step up to replace the finest trainer ever?"

theCount knows ! Apart from a punt on David Moyes, who else is there ?

Forget about Capello and Lippi and O'Neil - the first two are just about as old as SAF and MO'N brown-noses the press but his record isn't any better than Wee Gordie Strachan, who looks the business at Celtic but never did much at Southampton.

I suppose that Carlo Ancelotti might be a shout but I think I've seen a fair number of reports in which he has denied coming to England/Chelsea and what makes anyone think he would leave Milan and then spurn London for the delights of Manchester ? Gimme a break !
