Kiko: I’ll Miss Fergie The Maestro

Federico Macheda has revealed that the reason why he chose to join Sampdoria on loan for the rest of the season, ahead of other Italian teams, like Lazio, who showed an interest, is because they were the keenest to sign him. With the recent departure of Antonio Cassano, Kiko knows he should get a lot of time in the team which will help him improve as a player.

Although happy to have secured a loan move, Kiko has expressed his sadness at having to leave Sir Alex Ferguson, if even for a few months.

“Sampdoria were the team who really came looking for me,” said Macheda. “There was never anything concrete with Lazio. I need to play with continuity and I consider this to be the best decision, but no one has guaranteed me a place. I will have to earn it. There was too much competition at Manchester United. Ferguson is a maestro, the best Coach in the world and I am sorry to leave him even for a brief period, but he also encouraged me to have this new experience. I will return to Manchester an even stronger player.”

I think it’s too soon to decide on his future, but six months of regular football at a high level will not hurt him one bit. We need continuity in our attackers, that means playing the same guys week in week out if we are going to win the league. So that means that lads like Macheda, and Welbeck, and Diouf, they’re not going to see enough action in our first team. It is better for them on a personal and professional level to be loaned out, see the footballing world, get some games, get their name out there, and it is better for the club. Worst case we bring them home.

I’ve been keeping an eye on Macheda because his game is something of an enigma to me, I can’t figure out what he does. Hopefully after six months away it’ll be more apparent.

    another zoran tosic. *sigh*

I would love to have him back .. Having as many strikers as we do adds competition for places and it will not let any of them rest on their laurels. We need at least FOUR proven strikers next year – Rooney, Berbatov, Hernandez, Macheda and Welbeck. Welbeck and Rooney are the two most versatile and can play up front or out wide on the flanks, but Hernandez and Welbeck could very easily have the sophomore slump, so having Kiko back is just add cover.

  13. DEVILisRED says:

once they tasted first team football, many will feel hard to let go. no fault of theirs. no fault of the club either for loaning them out. juz most of the time, it doesnt usually turn out the way we have hope. same concern for welbeck & miam diouf. *sigh*

Not good enough, good luck tho kiko….we will never forget that goal v’s aston villa!!!

  15. Zelh says:

    not good enough?
seriously what is up to most of you?
He’s just 19 fuckin years old!

two world class finishes against villa.
    assist against valencia.
    assist against spurs last season.

he has not the power for 90 minutes of football.
But he did extremely well as a sub.

  16. willierednut says:

I hope he’ll be back, he deserves another chance, to succeed at United.

  17. nani4ever says:

well said kiko will be watching all sampdoria games to monitor your progress, just like i do with welbeck at sunderland and cleverley at wigan, kiko will prob be our best striker in a few seasons

I completely agree with your comment about “continuity” BUT it seems to me to beg two questions: one, formation – how does DimitarBerbatov get “continuity” when SAF goes back to a 4-5-1/4-3-3 as his CL security-blanket ?; and, second, what about Chicharito ? Chicharito needs to play – he’s the most natural goal-scorer on the team. HIs presence – and absence – is a real problem that needs to be resolved.

  19. trevormytrevors says:

    he’ll be back

  20. Mancunian4ever says:

I ‘ll never forget his last gasp winner against Aston Villa , Fergie knows how to deal with him and will never let him go forever, the boy has an incredible talent but for now we have 3 world class strikers in Berbatov , Rooney and Chicarito plus Michel Owen , so no need to retain Macheda especially with size of our squad , see ya Frederich

  21. StatesideAussie says:

@DentonDavey … good post, I agree completely with the comments about berbatov and Chicharito. The “problem” with having so many good young strikers around is that they need game time to develop, but how can we accommodate them all when, as you say, it’s so difficult to given even the main guys the sort of continuity they (and the team) need?

When pursuing a youth policy, as we are, there’s a built-in assumption that some of them won’t make it. The trouble is, it’s virtually impossible to know how many will be “weeded out”. If you have four top young strikers (or pick any position), maybe only one of them will work out, or two, or maybe none. (And one out of four would be a decent return on investment.) In our case, it looks like Chicharito will definitely make it (though he didn’t come through our youth system, he’s still young!), and both Kiko and Welbeck are strong possibilities too; Diouf is less so (and I haven’t even mentioned the even-younger ones coming up behind them). But having 3 out of 4 “succeed” may be more than we bargained for. Sure, it’s a nice problem to have, but it does mean that one way or the other, at least one of them will probably leave.

  22. The United Way says:

I am really not sure about who will triumph out of Macheda and Welbeck and get into the first team.

Despite the former’s heroics, I’d rather the Manc Welbeck comes through better – won’t get his head turned by the sunny Mediterranean.

I think SAF trusts Macheda, so I am sure he will be back.

  23. Costas says:

You’ll see him again Kiko. :)

  24. bigphil2003 says:

@DevilisRed – Tosic and Rossi were never as promising as Kiko.

  25. jay says:

Why does it sound like he is going to leave to me? I like him and I do think he will be great but I would more disappointed if this was Hernandez. I don’t think he will be back and why should he unless Ferguson plays him more.

  26. denton davey says:

StatesideAussie @ 15:18: “When pursuing a youth policy, as we are, there’s a built-in assumption that some of them won’t make it.”

I’m not sure that UTD follow a “youth policy” but, rather, a “constant transition”. SAF has been quoted as saying that the expected life of any team/collection-of-players is about four years.

Clearly, he has had an eye on what’s happened to the Milan teams who have gotten older and older – admittedly, Inter had an Indian summer last year and ACMilan are somehow top of a very weak SerieA this year – or the RentBoyz whose fall-from-grace was suggested 18 months ago but was postponed by a last-gasp double in 2009/2010.

It’s one of SAF’s great strengths as a manager that while he is loyal to his players he never lets that loyalty get in the way of assessing their ability to contribute – and, saying that, I’d be gobsmacked to see RedNev appear again wearing the red shirt.

When a guy is done, stick a fork in him. That’s the business side of footie – what have you done for me lately ? what can you do for me tomorrow ?

It’s a tough business and there’s no place for sentimentality in it. It’s better to replace a RedNev/Giggs/Scholes a year too soon that a year too late. And it’s catastrophic to keep veteran players on the first-team when they are no longer able to contribute. It’s all well-and-good to have loyal foot-soldiers – John O’Shea and Wesley Brown are prime examples – but those kind of players (like Phil Neville and Nicky Butt) are there on suffrance. And, Fergy don’t suffer fools gladly.

  27. DEVILisRED says:

    @bigphil2003
bet to differ on that one. all 3 are very promising in their own way. in fact, it always got me slightly more excited on the very few occasion rossi & tosic appear for our first team, as compare to kiko. the reason i mention them here was becos when both went on loan, these lads, like kiko genuinely believe they will come back.. i also believed back then they will be back. i had been disapointed twice, hope i get 3rd time lucky with kiko. dont forget, kiko is returning to his home country, adding possible further twist. anyway, there’s no other way abt it. these talented lads need some playing time. guess we juz have to cross our finger. & this definetly wont be the last time. cheers!

  28. RedBlood says:

@denton davey:i share the same sentiments…..There have been many instances over the past couple of years when seeing Gary Neville in the starting lineup sends me in a constant state of anxiety……same goes for Wes……having loyal players is brilliant as they make the younger lads coming through aware of what it means to be a Manchester United player, but when someone plays as badly as Gary does, it becomes a cause of concern …especially since we seem to lack a good substitute whenever Rafa needs to be rested.I wonder what happened to both Wes and O Shea that it was Nev who started…but as i said Fergie has seem him get skinned on more than a couple of times now and if and when a referee does send him off it can cost us the title especially when the margins are so tight this year.

  29. StatesideAussie says:

@Denton … maybe it’s not a “youth policy” as such, but we have been concentrating on bringing young players through, rather than buying “proven talent”. Of course, it’s not a new thing for us, but it does seem to have been more focused in the last few years, and we do have a lot of youngsters around. “When a guy is done, stick a fork in him.” — nice quote.

    I really hope so.

  31. NEED TO FEEL THE LOVE says:

IT SHOWS HOW HARD IT IS TO MAKE IT AT OUR CLUB MY THINKING IS THAT THE LADS HAVE TO GO OUT TO OTHER CLUBS AND GAIN VALUABLE EXPERIENCE IF THEY COME BACK AND BURST THROUGH GREAT IF NOT THEY FIND THEY OWN LEVEL AND EVERYONE IS A WINNER GOOD LUCK KIKO THE KID HAS ALLWAYS TRIED AND THATS THE BOTTOM LINE FOR ME

  32. bigphil2003 says:

@DEVILisRED – Agree with you mate that him going to his home country does leave things a bit more up in the air, but I have to be honest once Rossi and Tosic left I didn’t see any chance of them coming back. Fergie obviously has a lot of belief in Kiko and (don’t quote me on this) I believe he’s been a lot more involved for us than either of those two were.

  33. Neil says:

To those of you who think he isn’t coming back, do you really think he’d choose an insignificant club in Serie A over United? They won’t even sniff the Champions League, let alone contend for a league title. Trust in Fergie, always.

  34. Paul Parker says:

Kiko is a class player lacking confidence, he’s caused enough problems for Chelsea and secured us enough points to prove that. He’s even younger than Welbeck, give him some games in the first team in Italy and lets see, those are big shoes he’s filling. And if he doesn’t come back, it will be more to do with him being an Italian wanting to play in Italy rather than us not wanting him back. I think he’ll thrive and come back to OT with a point to prove, like Diouf Clevery and Welbeck.

  35. musvn says:

see you Kiko. I like him. Welbeck and Kiko will be our duet strikers for years to come, and even better theyre home grown :)

  36. lol says:

LOL the kid’s only going out on loan ffs he hasnt died get a grip you lot , he isnt the first to go out on loan and wont be the last every bloody kid at every premier league team need’s first team football to develop into a better and stronger player

  37. Samuel - united WE stand says:

What’s with the goodbyes from united fans? lets be positive and hope he’ll be back, obviously respects sir alex very much and the manager rates him, i think he’ll be classy match winner, just needs first team experience, hopefully he’ll come back a better, stronger player capable of fighting for a first team place, he is one of the very best finisher at club despite just being 19, all he needs to do is improve his all round game, get physically stronger and hopefully his future still lies at the club, good luck at sampdoria and come back in the summer.

  38. Viva Chicharito says:

I really can not believe the amount of fans saying he is not good enough.. Those of you who actually watch MUTV and watch youth team and reserve football will now that Kiko is class. Mark my words he will be a superstar. So far he hasnt been given a chance, can any of you haters name me a game that he has played with out first 11? everytime he has played its either with team which includes half our first teamers and has had to play of scraps.. The guys movement and finishing is quality and Fergie knows. He is a 100 times better than Wellbeck. Scott can you get stats on the games when Kiko has come on and changed the game for us….Some of you fans dont sit at home watch the game on the tele and then come on here making comments. Kiko is only 19 remeber that.
