Legend Ian Brown: We’re The Republik of Mancunia… We Don’t Give A F**k About England!

Before each match at Old Trafford, The Stone Roses – This Is The One is played. Ian Brown, the band’s frontman, is a massive red, who grew up in Timperley and names Eric Cantona as his favourite player.

He once picked up an NME award but told organisers he would only come to receive it if a member of United’s 1999 Treble winning side presented it to him. Teddy Sheringham did the honours.

He has today reminded this country exactly what we think of England.

When asked about his favourite United chant he responded: “‘He plays on the left, he plays on the right, that boy Ronaldo makes England look shite’. That’s what I love about United: we’re the Republic of Mancunia, no one gives a fuck about England. My next favourite would be ‘You can stick yer fucking England up yer arse”, which we sing to Chelsea and the London clubs. I love that. When we sing ”Argentina” when Tevez comes on, you see the away fans with open mouths. What other club in England would sing ”Argentina”? Nobody. I love that.”

  3. KendalRed says:

Yeah, I read this in the Observer Sport Monthly, which was guest edited by Rio Ferdinand.
Brown has come from a family that was practically all Blues as well – he says that he was bought City shirts and the like when he was young, but he turned round and said the wanted United!

    Red Legend (him and Mani)!

  4. doncobaino says:

was out at a stone roses tribute the other week and when they played it- i let the scousers know its link with United

  5. spencer says:

    absolutely correct Ian.

and the thing is, there are a few United fans who get all nervy when they hear the anti-England chants well I am sorry but thats how it goes. The large majority of United fans love United and hate England. The way the media and even some England players such as Stevie Me reacted towards Ronaldo etc after WC06 did naff all to make United fans like England a little bit more. Made them hate them more

  6. james f says:

The Stone Roses are one of the greatest exports from Manchester, together with United, The Smiths and New Order.
Manchester is the centre of the planet!

  11. Jake says:

who said anything about hating England? I just don’t give a toss about the national team etc…

  12. King Eric says:

Me neither, I could not give two fucks about ingerland and never have.

Ian Brown is a fuckin legend. Seen him a few times since the Roses disbanded and he never disappoints. Saw him at either MEN or Gmex the day of Besties funeral and throughout the gig he kept chanting the “we all live in a George Best World” and the whole place kept erupting (well United fans did). Whenever you go to see him its like been at a footy match with United songs. One xmas i saw him at MEN and “twelve Cantona s” kept going round the arena. Legend.

    United > England.

  13. ZeeZee says:

He plays on the left, he plays on the right, that boy Ronaldo makes England look shite’!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. SteRDLK says:

Stone Roses are world class, much better than Citys band Oasis.

    United > England

  15. EastStandManc says:

I remember typing out a couple essays a bit back explaining this to a couple of ‘dippers.

Trust Ian to put it sum it up in 3 or 4 lines :D ! Legend!

  16. Giles Oakley says:

I’m only interested in England if United players are involved. In the ’66 World Cup Bobby Charlton’s goals against Mexico (what a bullet!) and Portugal in the semi always meant far more to me than the Final itself, although of course I was glad England won – because Bobby & Nobby were playing. I was always narked that Alf Ramsey didn’t use John Connelly, despite having him in the squad. He was a good pacy, direct winger who got a lot of goals for United and was a vital part of the Championship winning team of 64-65 and he deserves to be better remembered. England would have been far more entertaining with him giving the Wingless Wonders a bit of width. Ramsey could have dropped, say, Roger Hunt (rhymes with…) who I never liked because, of course, he played for Liverpool.

  17. Red-Manc says:

You can stick your fucking england up your arse!

United > england without a doubt. Republik of Mancunia

  18. suhayl says:

Spot on Ian….Stone roses…takes me back to the MAD chester halcyon days..what great times they were..tony wilson…hacienda etc

Met Mani and Ian a few times…top quality blokes. What LEGENDS

Fuck you gallaghers you twats..Remember it was due to the stones that you were created and on the back of them and their genius and their music and their foresight, their pioneering that you got your success.

And that is one of my fave all time songs along with fools gold

  19. Trent242 says:

King Monkey knows his footy proper. Brown and Peter Hook are massively into United and are aware United>England, but it theirs minds it’s United>Anyone Else.

  20. AlexOfMancunia says:

    What a legend!

Fools Gold was one of the best tunes ever, and the Stones are THE best band to ever come out of Manchester. Was in a pub once when he was there and we spent the whole night bursting out randomly into chants. Top laugh, and a top bloke.

Who gives a shit about England really?

Loved it when the England team lost vs Croatia and were knocked out of Euro 2008 qualification with no United players in the team.

  21. kokka78 says:

    L*E*G*E*N*D*!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Superdorz says:

I saw Ian Brown at the Reading festival in 2000, he sed fuck all in between the songs and didnt even do an encore!

    Wot a Legend!!

  23. Stenhousemuir_Red says:

el presidente mancunia = ian brown (born wina)

  24. ty says:

Ian Brown is stewardess threatening twat, and Mani is an open IRA supporter. Both facts. I think that Man united having a big irish support must be behind a lot of this. You won’t have the balls to print this of course.
