Gary

I didn't mean it as an,always want to see his name in the starting line up but what I am alluding to is the fact that we can't expect miracle from him at this early when the team is under performing so badly,He is mentally strong no doubt but that doesn't mean we should burden him with ridiculous expectations.

I was the one who made the comment, Moyes would be very happy to take all the credit if the team does well, and many fans or anyone else defending this appalling job he has done, would tell us all that we told you Moyes was the right appointment. Heck fergie done it for 2 decades, and Mourinho loves to take the credit if the team succeeds. The reality is, Moyes is from the era of subbuteo football, and he does not understand, to make united the best the team must have plans A B C D E F and G. Here is an amazing stat for you, Mata has only won one game in a united shirt. Any manager struggling this bad with players he has at his disposal like at united, needs to look in the mirror, because many can say there are holes in this squad, which there are holes, but there is enough talent to be doing better

We have great attacking players no doubt but a very unsettled defense and a midfield crying out for reinforcements and it has come to the point where the former can't make up for the latter 2 parts of the equation.Although we have 2 potentially great defenders but they haven't been properly drafted in to the first team by Fergie while he trusted on Rio Evans and Vida at CB.Moyes has given game time to Smalling who I think will turn out to be fantastic defender and will promote Michael Keane(Rumours) and Jones will finally settle in his fevourite position as he has identified the midfield problem which is well documented so without flogging that dead horse I feel the team lacks a solid foundation on which the attacking set up should be built.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has suggested the club will spend big during the summer after a ‘disappointing’ season.

Despite the club’s on-field struggles, United have confirmed commercial income of £42.3million, up 18.8% for the quarter with the prospect of more sponsorship deals to come.

Speaking to shareholders following the announcement of United’s second-quarter results, Woodward admitted the club’s form in the Premier league has been a disappointment.

“We once again achieved a record revenue quarter with strong contributions from our commercial and broadcasting businesses despite the current league position, which everyone from the team manager down has acknowledged is disappointing,” said Woodward.

“We continue to see meaningful opportunities to grow our commercial business and the popularity of football on TV is leading to continued broadcasting revenue growth – all of which bodes well for the long-term stability and financial strength of our business.”

The club broke their transfer record to sign Juan Mata from Chelsea in January and Woodward has intimated that money will be made available to manager David Moyes during the summer.

“The long-term strategy is to build a competitive squad that can challenge for trophies,” said Woodward.

“We have the ability to do that. We can buy players to compete at the top level, which is what we should be doing.

“We are also very pleased to have added a world class player in Juan Mata to our squad, who has already made a positive impact.”

Moyes struggled to bring in anyone during the summer but Woodward believes the club will invest heavily in the squad at the end of the season.

“We’ll move in the market in a way we haven’t seen in recent years,” he said.

“It’s fair to say we’re focused on strengthening the squad. I’m focused on a long term strategy to make sure we build a competitive squad that is challenging for trophies.

“We’ll invest in the squad as we need to, to make sure we compete at the highest level.”

While there will be arrivals, Woodward has hinted there will be some players on the way out.

“We are looking at some players in the squad that perhaps we will sell this summer,” he added.

More comments from Metro

‘It’s fair to say we are focused on strengthening the squad we are looking at some players in the squad who we would perhaps look to sell this summer,’ he said.

‘We wouldn’t necessarily look to churn a significant number of players, because that can have a destabilising effect.

‘Historically we have done three sales and three purchases each year [on average] and it’s possible we would do more than that [this summer].’

UnitedFaithful - He still should be doing better, much better than what we are seeing on show, Liverpool in 2005 finished 5th in the PL and go check that squad out. We have one of the worst home records in the PL, we could not even beat bottom side Fulham at OT. Yea it is fair enough this side is not good enough to win a PL title, even though it was done last year. But no one tell me, this squad cannot even beat stoke Fulham Newcastle villa, GIVE ME A BREAK. This is man utd, and the day we cannot beat 70% of the PL's top flight sides, is the day we could fall into the midtable falltrap

The next summer window will be an important one according to Woodward.I wonder if his comments have anything to with his previous experience or it's just a contingency plan considering our season thus far.

Agreed he should be doing better,he clearly hasn't been able to compensate for this squads inadequacies as Fergie did,can you blame him?He hasn't had a steady starting 11 to choose from due to injuries in defense and mid all our best players from last season either have been injured or been out of form, feel we haven't seen his abilities reflected on this team due to those mitigating factors and he will need time

Agreed on Januzaj. Top lad, hope he keeps his head and soul.

Got to laugh at the England camp rumors, some rags saying he can barely speak english.
Tevez? he can't speak english
Januzaj? He's alright to be fair.

Very impressed that Moyes has the tact to bring him on slowly.
Young lad like that just won't hold up to too many games.
Look at Hargo Owen and so many others who started to fast and got too many games early.

Speaking for youngsters injured. What is up with Danny Welbeck? Heard he had a knee injury.
Is that the old one coming back or something new.

Anyway, hope all the lads enjoy Dubai.

Haha - @ Tommy - do you know this is Valentines Days? By saying you are off to watch a youth team match you have pretty much given it away again - you don't really have a girlfriend or partner or whatever. But you know what everyone can dream.

OK this is boring as shit. I think everyone has pretty much decided their positions on Moyes and those still thinking he is the right man are never going to be convinced by facts or logical points as they don't deal in them.

Our aim now is to stop City winning the league and Liverpool getting to top 4.

We are not going to win the CL, but we could beat Olymiakos. Teams like BL and last match Arsenal still stand off us because of our reputation and I think Olympiakos will be overawed to play United and quite frankly they are Conference team level so there is no question that we should beat them. I expect us to do so and go through to to next round. The players also seem to have a bit more confidence in the CL and we were 451 for the matches and that helped. Lets hope he does not tinker with that.

Is anyone else sick of Moyes constantly tinkering with the team and unable to know who his best 11 is. He has not played the same team once in 39 matches.

And on the Ozil debate - he was the best player for Germany when they reached the final of the world cup. He is a world class player and has I believe FIFA nominations. He was fantastic early season but we have a lot of matches in Dec and cup matches and he looks tired. Arsenal have also put him on a weights programme, not sure if a player like Ozil needs that, sometimes bulking up with muscle can slow and tire you but no doubt their fitness guys have a plan. Once he gets a measure of this league and gets stronger he will be lethal. He is still a young player. Also Ozil needs good movement around him just like Mata does and Oscar, Giroud is often the only player lumbering up infront of him, Ramsey made intelligent runs and got goals because of who reading his runs and making assists...?

UnitedFaithful - I blame fergie for failing to rebuild the squad, I blame the board for taking fergie's advice to seriously on the next appointment, instead of thinking for what is best for the club. I have seen managers put together far better performances and work ethic into their squads, than what Moyes has done.

Look at benitez, a manager united fans see has a joke during his 6 year spell at Liverpool, nicknamed the big fat waiter, we saw Liverpool only twice of his 6 year spell fail to make the top 4. And poor poor naïve gullible Woodward, him along with Moyes are going to find out the hard way this summer, that buying players during world cup and European championship years, are the worst years to be buying players. And you will find out when the season starts, that more excuses from the pair of them will be flying out their asses, that they will once again find it hard to buy players, heck they could not do it when we were champions, so what hope do we have? when we cannot even make the champions league of enticing players to this club.

When you drop out of the elite, with the management in place, its very hard to get back in. Liverpool could not get into the CL for 4 years because of bad manager and player choices, and only now are they clawing their way back into the elite of European football. Look at Liverpool after their 1990 title success, bad manager choices etc, has seen them go on one of their worst title spells in the history of that club

NBI - it does not matter about tinkering, united during their hatrick of titles between 2007-09 made allot of changes, not so much in the 06/07 season, because the squad was too small to rotate, but 07/08 and the 08/09 season, united were rotating the squad every week. So its not about rotating, rotation is fine if you use it effectively, its how you use those players is what counts.

I won't blame anyone,Fergie I think was really hesitant to undertake another rebuilding process as he had already made his mind up about retiring. So he did what he does best win trophies to shut fans like us up with short term solutions, but by ignoring that the team started moving towards a point when it can no longer function with him. That's my theory.I would rather have Fergie and Sir Bobby make footballing decisions rather the Glazers mate.

Liverpool analogy is different mate,United are a corporate juggernaut and make huge profits every year,it will take failure of epic proportions for a very lone time for United to truly fall from the higher echelons of Football,United took a chance with Moyes,if he is not up to it we can still go for the big name managers.

I am not defending Moyes I am just stating that he hasn't got the chance to show his managerial mettle in a squad that's inadequacies are too big for him to paper over.We haven't been playing for so long and it was just a matter of time before it's shortcomings were exposed.Add to that injury to key players and misfiring strikers and you get a team which as a unit is really struggling.Sum of individual parts and all that.

@ Adam

Yea, as I said further down in that same comment that it might be a point of contention for players not to come to United and won't feel the same way as Mata did. BUT I still believe the United brand, even with Moyes and no CL is attractive for many players. Many quality players, fitting your requirements for a signing, exist out there and aren't or won't play for the CL next year. Spain, Italy, and Germany has a few players who are out of the top four who are quality. The only area I would differ further from your views is in the overinflated price. I don't know if that is true because I expressed earlier of FFP. But if we want quality we will have to pay for it. Hopefully, we find some hidden gems and 1-2 big names. I think that is possible with £100 million.

@UnitedFaithful

I hope he does consider it but after his comments, it would be hard to see that happen. He clearly doesn't have much respect for Moyes as a coach. Even if he is right with some of his comments about Moyes probably burnt down any bridge of a possible return while Moyes is manager. However, what a signal it would be to the fans. If Moyes did bring him back, it would be an admission that he made a mistake last summer letting him go. I would love to see Rene back at the club and leading the training sessions again. As SAF said, hardest thing was letting go and allowing other coaches to run certain aspects. United was just too big he said to run everything. Maybe Moyes would be better served allowing someone else to run training even if he is making the majority of plans. Not many better than Rene at that.

The world cup final in south africa was played between Spain and Holland, Not Germany, Euro2008 Germany made the final and lost to Spain.

@Fletch

Not really shocked that he was sacked, I said with their owners him and Ole might not finish the season but its awful the way their owner and the cheif exexcutive both issued statements and not once did they thank Rene, awful, hope they go down, also what kind owner allows a manager to spend 12million on a striker and then sack him before he has even player, Pathetic club, also I must say RIP Sir Tom Finney, 1 of the best players to ever player the game, died aged 91, some say he was better than Sir Stanley Mathews
