I think almost every UTD fan accepts the fact we have had a terrible european campaign this season. No one will deny that, not even the most die hard fan. Everyone knows where the problem lies.It’s the midfield. Why SAF decided not to do anything about it is beyond me? It hurts seeing my team get schooled by a much younger team but Bilbao have been bloody good so far. It doesn’t hurt to give them some credit instead of saying we are shite and such bullshit. Of course we need reinforcements in the midfield. Don’t you think SAF notices that? Do you think he is happy with the way we have played in Europe this season? Absolutely not. I guess the gaffer had a plan this season but unfortunately it didn’t work out. It was always going to be a tricky season with us losing experienced players and trying to blood in youngsters. It is a really hard thing to balance and it has cost us Europe this season. Lessons will be learnt and we will back in Europe next season and we will give much a better account of ourselves next season. For now, if you don’t like seeing your team get beat then don’t watch them play. Simple. We were a mid table club and if we were lucky we won the odd FA or League Cup. I’ve also enjoyed the incredible successes which are all that younger supporters can remember.
I see football becoming more and more dominated by rich owners like Roman and the sheik and if we can’t afford to compete with them financially, perhaps its better to field a team of 11 players who actually care about the club as much as we the fans do, and not about pay cheques.

Copa del Rey – 25 May 2012 – Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona: then we’ll see how good or bad Athletic really is. As it is we gave it a good run tonight and got outplayed, had Giggs header gone in early maybe a different story but once Athletic was able to get ahead and stay there we we’re chasing play most of the rest of the night. To be honest we probably should have decided 100% to either go for it or not, having Park in the middle with Rooney isolated up front wasn’t the best plan to win it but then we played Rio and Carrick who IMO should have been rested for Sun if we weren’t going to go all in. So another one of those games where we wanted to go for it but didn’t want to roll all of our dice.
All in all Im not too upset (though I hate to see United lose ever) as 20 is the no. 1 goal this year and now we wont have any distractions the rest of the way. I hope city win tonight to keep themselves playing more games in the run out.

The thing is the so called ‘loyal’ supporters on here everyday will go and claim a win at the all mighty Wolves puts us back as the best team around when in reality it just clouds how far behind in Europe, deny this fact and they’re deluded.
Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish I can say SAF was an excellent tactical decision maker as well. But more often than not if you look back at his history, you’ll find you can call him a fantastic motivator, great risk-taker, excellent at giving out orders, but NEVER a great tactical decision maker. What a disgrace it was by putting Park in the middle and Clevz on the wings. Both had one of their worse nights in a United shirt. When we were getting outgunned and outskilled since the 10th minute, all we got was a 62nd minute substitution of our BEST passer in Carrick instead of the shocking Cleverley or Park. I don’t know which one is worse tbh, the 4-2-4 (Tevez,Berbatov,Ronaldo,Rooney) in the last 10 minutes against Barca in 2009 or the incomprehensible decision to reverse the roles of Park and Clevz. Sometimes I wish Carlos Quieroz was still around guiding him instead of the two jokers in Rene and Mike. They might be good coaches, but they definitely can’t provide sound tactical advice.

1. I have to give props to the Athletic fans. That is how you support a football team. Also the standing ovation they gave Giggsy when he came off and the applause they give Rooney was impressive.
2. Quite simply United got schooled again in a style that Barcelona have being playing for a while. There is no denying it and to try and paper over the glaring cracks we saw over the past 2 games against Bilbao is just plain excuses.
Can’t wait to hear the excuses from the manager and the players and how “we always bounce back”.
Interesting to see so many fans don’t care. Hope that never rubs off on the players, our complacency in Europe has been shocking. United have reached 4 champions league finals under Ferguson, and won the league every single time the same season. The fans being scared of a Europa League run has interesting. Shocking season in Europe comes to an end. All the credits to Bilbao and Bielsa, what a club they’ve been. Right from impressive build up play to cheering the opponents for scoring a goal. Bilbao flattered us thoroughly over the 2 legs. Should follow their play more and more. Lets be honest, we never had our full concentration on this match tonight, thinking about the Wolves game. No more Thursday night matches. Hope City go through tonight, hope they play a game on Thursday in the week we play them on April 30th. League was the priority all the damn time. Wow – this is one hysterical thread, so many handbags flying around hard to see any real football comments.
Well what to say, I have not seen enough of Bilbao to know how good they are but we are the Champions of England and they handed our ass to us. The supporters were so polite they clapped Giggs off, clapped Rooney for trying to run of his injury.
Scholes is made to play against Spanish teams, the formation one striker was odd, it did not really work as the wingers are not Nani, Valencia or Ronaldo. Young had an off game in my view, Giggs was not there, Rio held the defence together. Nothing really gelled, we weren’t humilated at all but we were clearly on the back foot and they were clearly better. Rooney and Rio were our starts. I would have played Fabio at LB and Evra at LW for this game, Smalling at RB and Rafael at RW.
Anyway, some players got more match time like Cleverly and Pogba, but overall this actually is pretty depressing. This was not a weak team we played, but on both occasions we were completely out of our depth…they had our number all day long and they rang in the change.

I didn’t think we played that bad. no-one had a really bad game except maybe Rio. He looks two yards off the pace now, and gave the ball away quite a lot. He needs to take a long look and think about retiring at the end of the season – quit while you are ahead.
By the end of the first half we were on top of them. Their goal was beautifully taken but Rio was nowhere again.
Having said that they should have scored 2 or 3 more so we can have no complaints.We don’t seem to do well when teams really press us, and we have little time on the ball.

some observation from tonight game:
1. people say that we must play with 4-2-3-1 but as we see today, we don’t have enough midfielder to adopt that kind of formation. i think it is better for us to play 4-4-1-1. it is more suitable with our set of -players right now. we can see after wellbeck enter the pitch, we have more option upfront. However, playing 4-4-1-1 requires screening midfielder such as Carrick to break opponent’s attack. For the future, i think Pogba can do the job..Rooney can act as the third midfielder too.
2. Rooney, without Valencia won’t play well as lone striker. he need someone beside him so he can supply good ball.
3. people say we need midfielder but i think we need winger with pace to burn. it is more suitable with our counterattack tactic. there are many occasion that we had a counterattack opportunity but our wingers are not fast enough. Ashley Young and Park don’t have enough power and pace. maybe we will have more chance winning with either nani or valencia on the wing. unfortunately, they are injured. we need them for the rest of our games.
4. we were very poor tonight but i won’t slag any of our players. Athletic Bilbao is very strong side. on their day, they can have a draw with Barcelona. They have very fast winger and they pressed well throughout the game, leaving very little space for our players. Their goals were executed briliantly especially first goal by Llorente.
Anyway, i am somehow glad that we are out of the competition. The players have more time to rest and will be fresher for the league game. with our squad atm, i am confident that we can be league winner as long as our players turn up in every game. having Valencia back will be boost for our title bid.

Can’t think of any other player who played well other than perhaps De Gea and Rooney -for some parts of the game. The rest looked uninterested slow, and simply mediocre. Given their wage structure, you would think that TRYING to win every game is a concept that surely doesn’t need a mention. They looked just dead. Evra looks too tired, Ashley Young has zero technical ability. Park is weak and has a poor first touch. Cleverley failed to impress against players who are of a similar age. Giggs was slow. Just awful. Every single one of them.
Would have preferred if Pogba and Welbeck started. At least then we would have the excuse of playing some youngsters.

I don’t think SAF underestimated them, he just did not have the squad or players to beat them, noting injuries. We cannot play a high pressing game and our MF cannot break up play, we break up play in our own third when Carrick and the defence engage so it looks like we are overrun all the time as we are. Vida used to practically stand on the half way line to break attacks and threw in some goals but we don’t have anyone like that right now.

Firstly I have done my time at OT STANDING in the Stretford Paddock and climbing over the fence into the Stretford End. I was at main road when they did us 5.1 i followed Utd when we were on division 2 and long before Skyinvaded our shores! So folks yes it’s true we we’nt great in Europe this year so what remember the awesome nights we have had and WILL have again. Yes we’re shy a sting midfielder but don’t let’s be like Citeh or Chelsky and go by a mercenary. That’s why our club is so great because of our history. Players come to Utd because of that history and our standing in world football. Those screaming about SAF have very short memories and if you want instant success then I would suggest moving to Stockport Yes we want to win everything but simple fact is we can’t and won’t. That doesn’t mean that tonight didn’t hurt but just think how your gonna feel if we do win the PL again. You should support when it’s good but cheer loudest when it’s bad. Thanks for reading this

And of course it will be a major success. But shouldn’t we ever wonder why United can’t handle playing at more than 1 competition these days? You mentioned our lack of spending. There’s logic in that, but there’s also poor choices. Like buying Young (who I’ve defended and still do) instead of a CM, not selling Berba and PIG and selling O’Shea. That didn’t do our squad any favours. But even so, this squad is still good. If it stays healthy. Why doesn’t it though? Where was Valencia for example? Or Nani? Can’t remember the last time we had an injury crisis an entire season..

The midfield needs sorting out SAF!!! And FFS, we definitely need to review the coaching staff, it was as if watching a local small town team playing yet again, no real bonding between the players, lack of communication, where at one point Evans is screaming and swearing, and only two real chances (Giggs header and the goal by Rooney), and no real player to drive the play at any point in time, may be a mistake to leave Scholes on the bench (yet again!!!) and play Park in midfield (he’s a wing player!!!)
Disappointed yet again, but hopefully we can win No. 20, else it will be one terrible season…

Well with the exception of the league cup, for me, United enter competitions to win them. And as far as European football is concerned, we have a rich history there. I don’t mind not winning the cup. I thought we were supposed to be catching up with barcelona this season, the project has failed big time. our current position in the league is blinding us from seeing the deeper things. We know how to win this league and I will not be surprised if we win it again this year. But as good as the that will be, it is giving a lot of people a false impression/denial that all will always be well as ‘the end justifies the means’. I don’t know much about the glazer stuff but something/someone is starving the team of quality replenishment. That we still rely so much on giggs and scholes, year in year out frightens me. SAF will not always be here to squeeze wins out of these guys. Someone said they will be given the haidryer and I laughed. Much more than they can give has been squeezed out of them, they need refreshing. I really hope this will indeed mark a turn around for us. No matter what we say here, however much we disagree with ourselves, whatever side of the divide we belong, we all are here for the love of our club Manchester United.

I agree with you. our players are not great at playing in 4-5-1/4-2-3-1 with Rooney isolated up front. For now, the best formation we can do is 4-4-1-1 with Rooney as no.10. Tonight, our midfielder could not break the attack, our wingers could not start counter attack because they have no pace. Cleverley as winger also does not help.
Regarding our record in Europe this season, i can say that it is pretty awful. however, there are many new players in our squad. our season also was disrupted by injury which caused many players lost their form. I hope next season we will have great season in europe.

For far too long, we’ve had players lacking this. We have lost some experience and are rebuilding, a great team isn’t built overnight and we all need to be patient with the young players. We can’t sit still and think we’re a complete team, we need to keep adding quality.
European teams have taught us a massive lesson this season and we have to learn for next season.

i agree with your opinion that we should sign hazard and martinez. however, munain may be cheaper alternative to hazard. he is fast, positionally aware and has bag of tricks. Martinez played very well in the game. he is very strong and tidy in possesion. he also can fill as centre half too. we know that Fergie loves players who can play in various position. However, according to rumour, barcelona is also interested in Martinez. maybe we can also add a left back too if Fabio can’t take the job.

I feel a little better knowing that city are losing 3-0 on aggregate. We were fucking poor, that team didn’t allow any of our players any time or space on the ball. Manchester United players will know they were in a game tomorrow as I’m sure they will feel ragged.
We played better when Pogba came on. Clevz until then had been pretty poor uptil then, but was better after. I think Carrick and Clevz do not work well together. Both are ball players of different kinds. Carrick with long passes from back, and Clevz likes to move it fast in MF. We didn’t have enough fast movers in MF. So the pair didn’t work. I don’t think that this was a match for Giggsy, just like it wasn’t against Barca. He’s good whn he has time on the ball, but when pressed, his age shows.
I think we need to review our tactics in Europe, with a move away from 4-4-2. Bring Quieroz back!
Also, we might want to have a look at Iraola, Bilbao’s full back. Showed nice feet in the box

I agree, tactically I do not understand our European approaches at all. I think there is a master plan but I think the coaches may be getting to esoteric and playing people out of position and in new positions in a European match makes no sense. Barca keep ball when tired then regain energy.
- Bilbao are persistent for 90mins.
Barca pass the ball,till the other team gets bored and gives up.
-Bilbao passes through the team from the 1st minute.
Barca never lose the ball, but regain it quick but are really easy to directly attack (Arsenal,milan etc)
- Bilbao lose the ball but pressure from the front to the opposition goalie and have a solid defence. So its hard to get out the box.
Barca have more experienced players but if Bilbao hold on to theirs and improve the squad they can be massive maybe even 3rd in their league.
No shame in our defeat today, we lost to a team which is far superior in ability. Its not as if we went in off form or with a lot of injuries. Yes we have Valencia,Nani,Vidic,Fletcher out but we had good players out there that got out-passed and out-thought. Plus they wanted it more. We are not ready for this type of opposition yet.
