Liverpool Keeper Admits United Appeal

After losing their hero, Fernando Torres, to Chelsea, it looks as though Pepe Reina is interested in jumping ship and joining the team at the top of the league.

“Yes, well Van der Sar will hang up his gloves in the summer so of course they are looking,” Reina told Spanish radio station Ondo Sera. “I can’t do anything. I can’t say anything logically as I have a contract with Liverpool. Of course one likes to fight for titles and be in a team that does that. We always fought to be in the Champions League and try to win the title. But unfortunately it hasn’t been the case in the last couple of years.”

With Liverpool looking to miss out on Champions League football again this season, the keeper has reiterated his desire to play at the top level

“I won’t lie, I want to play in the Champions League and challenge for titles,” added Reina.

Whilst it’s nice to see a player interested in joining United, I do wonder whether he’s the man for the job. He’s a good keeper but he hasn’t proven himself to be a great keeper. On his side he has the fact he’s got plenty of Premiership experience and at 28, still has plenty of years ahead of him.

fergie, fergie, sign him up !! :D

    I can’t see it, personally.

  3. gazzor72 says:

Would love it but they would sell to Everton before us.

  4. one&only united says:

Nice pic, was that 2nd goal or 3rd goal?

  5. sergio says:

Reina is the modern version of Barthez (both eccentric). i think Fergie recognises the fact that united need presence in goal, the big imposing type like VDS. Stekelenberg looks more suited to the role. plus, he’ll come much cheaper than Reina.

  6. james says:

They’d never sell to United thats for sure. Reina is a great keeper and he was so professional during the world cup accepting he wasn’t first choice. He supported the No. 1 unlike David James etc did for Green. Reina would be a great signing but its not gonna happen.

Off topic: Rooneys brother missed a sitter last week, he scored two though. check this out:

  7. SirRyanGiggs says:

Am I the only one thinking he can’t do a job for United the way Schmeichel/VDS did? He isn’t imposing enough and never plays that well against us. A keeper with a bigger presence is more in mind for me. Neuer and Stekelenberg come to mind for me.

  8. Doghouse says:

He’s proven at the highest level and he’s certainly very good. Definitely good enough for us now and young enough to improve. If he’s in the mix he’d be well worth considering. Added bonus would be taking him away from Liverpool.

  9. Prunierswig says:

Yeah I’d be happier with steeklenburg
too.wud be too much potential hype if reina
came to united.gonna be enough pressure
on whoever replaces VDS without adding hype
    to it

  10. Red Ben says:

Spot on Scott… he’s a good keeper but he’s not the sort of quality that can make a really good team into a great one. He’s also not of the mould of the successful goalkeepers we’ve had – he’s more of a Barthez.

I’d prefer us to break the bank for Neuer, as a ten year investment, or go for Stekelenberg, both of who are much closer to VDS than Barthez

    http://www.fivecantonas.com/pepe-reina-rumours-id-rather-sign-neuer-myself/

  11. Devilpower says:

No way he will be allowed to join us. Though he is a top class keeper, I think Neuer and Stekelenberg are still more realistic targets as they will probably come cheaper (in terms of wages?) and without the stigma of having played for the scousers.

  12. Paul says:

reina has a get out clause at 20 million but i would say deffo go for him as hes one of the best around

  13. TG says:

He won’t leave Liverpool as he only signed a 6-year deal last summer, the scousers have plenty of money now, more likely he will join Chavski like the ladyboy. They would pay £40m + and Utd can’t afford that at all, the Glazers will never spend that kind of money due to their debts….

  14. jay says:

He has premier league experience and is a great keeper, the others we can’t be sure of. At least you know what you will get with Reina plus he will have better defenders in front of him. If he did come he better be prepared the enormous backlash he will get 10 times more than what Torres got.

I must admit if I could sign a keeper now it would be Shay Given a keeper like him should not be playing second fiddle, even when Newcastle were fighting relegation his performance were awesome and he has been good for Manchester City only to be put on the bench because he is not English. He is a big imposing man and he knows how to get his defenders to work with him. It would mean Given having to put in a transfer request but that is unlikely.

  15. Xyth says:

Didn’t he and the ladyboy only recently stated that they would never sign for us due to their respect for bin dippers?

    PS Amended Torres song

    He’s half a girl,
    He’s half a boy,
    Torres, Torres.
He looks just like a transvestite,
    Torres, Torres.
    He wears a frock,
    He loves the cock,
He sells his arse on Chayne Walk,
    Fer-nan-do Torres,
    Terrys bit on the side…
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na…
    Fer-nan-do Torres,
    Terrys bit on the side…

  16. jespermoses says:

He’s not even a proven international,3rd choice I think at the moment….too much baggage ,no thanks!

  17. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

Forget Reina, theres one thing selling Torres to Chelsea as Chelsea have to win another 14 league titles to catch Liverpools history as selling to Chelsea is like selling to Blackburn, Newcastle or Aston Villa. Small Fry. Selling to us just cannot be done. And anyway, you have to look at the character of the player who would leave his allegencies with Liverpool to join United. I understand the choice but I question the loyalty. I would not be keen, as soon as we have a small slump (one that spurs great players to say we have no ambition) he’ll be mouthing off about wanting to go to Madrid to take over from Casilas. Sod that.
Forget Neuer, if Munich are interested then any major German prospect would want to play with them. If any team outside Germany would get him then Id take a guess at Madrid.
Forget Steckelenberg, I have an issue with buying a player that has always been the “replacement of”. If he was good enough to replace VDS then he would have replaced him before VDS decided to retire, in reality its a backwards step. If VDS was interested in playing international football again NOW everyone here knows he would be picked first.
To me Adler looks the best bet. He wont come cheap, he has international experience, hes dominant and orgainsed (typical German) and offers the best no thrills high concentration levels needed at a club like United.
De Goa is interesting and a great prospect BUT hes too young and too inexperienced at international level to be Manchester Uniteds first choice. If hes as good as everyone says he is (and to be honest I havent seen him play) then sign him and then loan him out to a team like Newcastle or Villa to see how he gets on.
Lindegaard is a prospect but nowhere near ready to take over at OT. I feel he will be bled into the No2 spot and I dont expect Kuzchak to leave this summer either, he wont be allowed.

  18. Costas says:

Meh. I’d rather give Kus a chance. But we will probably look for someone better than these two.

  19. Devilpower says:

Here is my question to all – has Kuzchak been given his due audition? Is he even worthy of a more thorough consideration by the coaching staff?

  20. Dave Malaysia says:

It is interesting. Seems he is considering his future at liverpool,so maybe the rumours earlier on about him cud have been started by his agent, to test the waters.

Dont think liverpool wud be bothered, they got a better deal in the torres saga, they wont be too miffed with this.

He is good but as some of u have said not dominant like Schmichael or VDS.

The Neur saga is getting interesting. louis van gaal has picked young bayern keeper kraft as his number one while the bayern management want neur. At loggerheads.

Now bayern are struggling, looks like louis cud be sacked, clearing the way for neur to join bayern in the summer. Only reason it might not happen is the rivalry between the clubs,he may not want to cross the line. Then again as we have seen ,it rarely matters .

Anyway liverpool may push reina off elsewhere instead and push the price to ridiculous heights.
We know Fergie and value in the market.

Besides dont most of u think it comes down to whether Fergie wants a brilliant young keeper with loads of potential OR a senior more experienced keeper in his 30 s ?

So wud Anders fit the young brilliant keeper category? Thus all our focus on adler, nuer are just waste of time.

Fergie might even shock us with signing mark schwazer from fulham or the possible buffon ,cesar!

  21. Mangesh says:

Dalglish won’t let that happen IMO. Just like Fergie blocked Heinze’s move to Liverpool.

  22. leaxan says:

    My version of it

    He’s half a boy
    He’s half a girl
    Torres Torres
He looks just like a transvestite
    Torres Torres
    He wears a frock
    He loves the cock
He used to sells his arse on Albert’s Dock
Fernando Torres, 50 Million was the price

    Was bought by Abramovich
    Torres Torres
to be fucked at the bridge
    Torres Torres
    He still wears a frock
    but now loves Russian cock
Fernando Torres, Terry’ll be banging his wife..

He used to hear the scousers sing,
    Torres, Torres.
Now Ashley Cole’s inside his ring,
    Torres, Torres.
In six months time he’ll hate his life,
I bet John Terry fucks his wife.
Fernando Torres, Chelsea’s new rent boy!

  23. parth312 says:

For once, I disagree with you Scott. He is a fantastic shot-stopper, precise ball distribution and a likable personality. People here talking about Sketelenburg and Neur, you have to understand they have never played at a massive club. The pressures, the fans, they can get to u as a keeper. Reina has been at Liverpool for a while, and although they are not as big, certainly the pressure is there at Anfield.

He is a proven Premier League performer, he is consistent and he starts many counterattacks with pinpoint throws. I dont understand what people mean by dominant. Does it mean a tall, muscular presence ? Keepers rely on agility, and even though Reina is slightly shorter than VDS or Sketelenburg he more than makes it up with his shot-stopping abilities and reflexes.

He has kept Pool in the game so many times its beyond imagination. Sure, like every keeper, he will make the occassional clanger. (The one against Arsenal and against Portugal come in mind) but then it is the toughest position in football.

Would love to see him at OT.. A real professional, no bitching, no back-biting and no drama.

  24. Costas says:

Anyone heard that Quieroz will probably take over the Iran national team?

  25. TG says:

We just won’t get the money off the Glazers, so stop dreaming!!!!!!……..Glazers out now!!!!!

  26. parth312 says:

    For the record

    Stekelenburg: 6 feet 6 inches
    VDS: 6 feet 5.5
    Neuer 6 feet 4.5
    Reina 6 feet 2

Not a really big difference, is there. If Liverpool are open to a sale, then grab him. He will be here for 8-10 more years for sure.

  27. Real AB says:

I personally don’t think he is good enough for United.

And I can’t say anything about all the others mentioned in comments above as I hardly follow any other leagues.. May be Spanish la liga sometimes but nothing else.

  28. jespermoses says:

    @Leaxan….like the last one mate……

  29. Dave Malaysia says:

STR on finding out why Rooney signed a new contract:

STR : How did he do that?
Darren Ferguson: My father made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
    STR: What was that?
Darren Ferguson: David Gill held a gun to his head, and my father assured him that either his brains or his signature would be on the contract.
STR : Oh fuck ru for real
    Darren Ferguson : …That’s a true story.

LOL , well ,smartalex, cedars and the rest ,hehe, just trying dun kill me .

  30. optimus says:

    Beach ball, anyone?

  31. King Eric says:

A bloody good keeper and only 28. Worth a point a game for the dippers. Will not happen though. The dippers may well sell to the Rentboys but not to United.

  32. devilnani says:

Good keeper but i like neuer or de gea. Both are the best right now..

  33. One two says:

@dave …epic post mate! Made my day.

  34. One two says:

About a new gk..so many comments say ‘need one with big presence’.then pls go get some wwe star with 7 ft height.we need a gk with intellgence, control over team, mental strength, experience and ofcourse presence.considering all these pepe is a gud one..but he is not a vds or buffon.lets hope SAF gets ths right.

  35. Dave Malaysia says:

@ One two: Tq, lets hope smartalex and others done one two punch me,lol.

whats the meaning of pmsl? someone having periods?

  36. bigphil2003 says:

I think a lot of people are letting their bias against the dippers get in the way here. Reina is a top top quality keeper and I’d have no worries at all if he became our number one.
People say he has no international experience – so what? Neither would Stekelenberg if VDS hadn’t retired so that point is moot.
As others have said though it would be highly unlikely – though before these quotes I thought it would be highly unlikely he’d even consider a move to United.

  37. Dave the cockney rebel says:

More chance of Gary Bailey resigning than this happening.

You lot are in need of some sense. Think logically and tell yourself “IT WON’T HAPPEN”.

Reina isn’t a lowlife like Torres.

  38. catotraa says:

    @one&only united

Third goal:) The second one everyone on the pitch went maniac congratulating him. And rightly so!

  39. 0161-Jon says:

  40. Toby says:

    BUFFON IS WHO WE NEED.

  41. wayne says:

pepe reina is 6′ 2″ is that short?,think there’s alot better going to be available, don’t think utd are interested in this guy + the dippers would never sell him to us its a non issue.

  42. redpete says:

not good enough for United! Stekelenburg is better!

  43. corgo23 says:

He is one hell of a shot stopper with pinpoint accuacy on his kickouts and throws with a solid defence like vidic and rio in front of him the clean sheets would roll in he’s also a stong presence to keep smalling, rafeal and co on there toes when they step in. I say sign him up…

  44. Fergie's gum says:

Not good enough for UTD & has never UTD’s pattern

  48. willierednut says:

Never gonna happen, but he’s a better keeper, than some are giving him credit for IMO.

  49. willierednut says:

Yeah, Saad and Dave are trail blazers lol.

  50. 90+Until we Score says:

    I rate him higher than Iker and Valdes…But he’s a YSB.Period.

@willie…but they make this blog so interestng

  52. One two says:

@90 +…dnt cmpare iker and valdes..valdes is ape shit and a total cunt

  53. Sig says:

According to The Sun Reina has a £20m buy out clause. So it’s not a case of if they want to sell him to us. Should note though that I agree he is not the man.

  54. willierednut says:

They make this blog interesting? lol.

  55. King Eric says:

De Gea will NOT be brought in to United. He is only fucking twenty and concedes for fun for Athletico. Don’t get me wrong he looks a great “prospect” but certainly not ready to be our number one. A huge difference playing over there than at United.

  56. CedarsDevil says:

Very good keeper no doubt but he does have the occasional howler and as Willie mentioned, never gonna happen.

    Neuer for me

  57. King Eric says:

Of course he is good enough for United. He has proven p[remier league experience and I bet people calling for Steklenberg have seen him play about ten times.

Shay Given is a great shot stopper but thats where it stops. He is static and never comes off his line. poor at crosses.

  58. willierednut says:

De Gea is the best young keeper in Europe. If United can do that deal, then they should It now, while he’s still affordable.

  59. parryheid says:

    He’s a Diddy who’s shipped 31 goals to date.

  60. willierednut says:

    He’s better than flash Gordon.

  61. willierednut says:

Deigo Lopez? Haven’t seen much of him lately, but he was always highly rated in la liga.

  62. denton davey says:

Goat @ 10:16: “Forget Neuer, if Munich are interested then any major German prospect would want to play with them. If any team outside Germany would get him then Id take a guess at Madrid…..To me Adler looks the best bet. He wont come cheap, he has international experience, hes dominant and orgainsed (typical German) and offers the best no thrills high concentration levels needed at a club like United.”

You may be right about this BUT I saw Neuer on Saturday and he was awesome. Fucking awesome. And he’s the pick of the German keepers by their national coach. Why Adler, who’s second-choice ?

What makes me wonder about your suggestion, though, is SAF’s claim that UTD “learned from the mistake” when they failed to sign Edwin in 1999. I think he now realizes that there is a difference between a very good keeper and a great one – Neuer is a great one. Also, I don’t think that money will be much of an issue since it is clear that having a great keeper is the foundation on which the team will be built for the next ten years. And, I’m not sure why you think Bayern is an attractive destination to all German-based players – some, yes; but “all” ? Some guys are just adventurous and want to sample different cultures. Besides, Bayern is a defensive mess – their central defenders have the turning-circle of an oil tanker.

  63. wayne says:

the goalie debate been going on for months and utd have been linked with about 10.think alder is a likely candidate because of the buy-out clause and was germany number 1 till he got injured + at 25 alot of years ahead of him.still think buffon could be the main target sir alex has rated him for years at 33 lots of experience and the price could be right.

  64. willierednut says:

He’s going to Bayern. But, if it’s a choice between the two, I’d plum for Neuer. Disagree about money not being an issue, the summer will tell all, though.

  65. wayne says:

of course money will be a issue adlers buy-out clause is 17 mill, think with buffon 33 should get him for less than 10. neuer who’s getting all the hype will be in the 20′s,this guy wouldn’t have even started the world cup if adler had been fit.

  66. Red Ben says:

I think we’re down to five contenders, if you exclude the mickey mouse ones likes Shay Given and Gianluigi Buffon. Reina, Adler, Neuer, de Gea and Stekelenberg

They would all be good signings, but I think the best of the bunch is Neuer. We could take a chance on de Gea, who has huge potential, but if he turns out to be a bust, we have lost a LOT

    http://www.fivecantonas.com/the-manchester-united-goalkeeper-situation-comparing-the-contenders/

  67. willierednut says:

Are we not down to 3 now? De Gea, outsider, Neuer and Steklenburg.

  70. Eddiemunro says:

    @willierednut

    I know he’s dead darling.

How did that sense of humour bypass work out?

  71. wayne says:

@Red Ben why is buffon mickey mouse? been rated one of the best goalies in the world for years and has tons of experience not many goalies have a world cup winners medal so you know he can handle pressure

  72. willierednut says:

Eddiemunro – I caught you out, no bypass needed lol.

  73. Kings says:

You can’t argue with the guy’s stats – clean sheets to games ratio is pretty awesome. United signing him will never happen in a million years.

  74. Eddiemunro says:

    @willierednut

    You didn’t get the joke.

  75. willierednut says:

    What joke?

  76. Eddiemunro says:

    ‘Bring back’

  77. MUFCOK says:

Dont want him, at all. Not because of his ability he is a decent keeper not the best though, but due to the fact he is willing to be a traitor, yes we should laugh as it works in our favour, but if he’s willing to join us from liverpool, whats to say he wouldnt go from us to city etc etc, sick to death of players not being loyal or even respecting their supporters hatred for other teams.

liverpool wouldnt sell him to United anyway just like we wouldnt let heinze(scum) go to liverpool.

  83. mattos000 says:

i hate liverpool but ill be the first to admit.. he’s a great keeper. some of the best reflexes ive seen in a keeper. however i don’t know if he is in the same mould as vds/schmeichel. they were two very commanding keepers and reina doesn’t seem to have that, although reina makes up for it in other ways.. i actually have no idea who we should get as our next keeper. maybe keep the faith in kusczak or lindegaard?

man im glad im not in fergies position

  84. willierednut says:

Want a hug Eddie? Only pissing around mate.

  85. Eddiemunro says:

Only cos you needed it explaining.

I’ll be the bigger man and let you have the last word (I refuse to use emoticons but if I did there’d be a cheeky one here)

  86. invertedquestionmark says:

He’s a great goalkeeper and it would be awesome to piss the scousers off – but do we really want a player who is willing to ditch Liverpool for United in our team?

  87. Eddiemunro says:

No hugs for me, just slow with the comeback

  88. wayne says:

wish i was in fergies position what a fucking life he’s led and live’s

  89. willierednut says:

  90. Eddiemunro says:

  103. denton davey says:

WillieRedNut @ 14:13: “Disagree about money not being an issue, the summer will tell all, though.”

Look at it this way – any one of the “contenders” is going to cost, say, 15 million. So, Neuer might cost 20 million – that’s just five million more. Assuming that he wants to play for UTD – who knows ? – five million is the “real cost” for buying the best. Five million is less than SAF punted on Bebe – five million is what UTD migth get for Mame Biram Diouf and Darron Gibson. It’s not a big issue – AND it’s not like Neuer would cost 20 million more than Steklenburg or Adler or Lloris or Reina or De Gea. The “real cost” is really just the marginal difference. And supposing that SAF learned his lesson by trying to shop in the bargain basement, I figure that money won’t be an issue.

  104. CedarsDevil says:

    @wayne lol

Back to the GK issue, again I will give my vote to Neuer. I have seen a lot of him is the last 2 seasons and he seems the real deal. Excellent shot stopper, very vocal in his area, good with both feet, good at coming for crosses and his distribution skills are up there……

  113. CedarsDevil says:

    Blimey, what have I started!

  114. United4eva says:

Could you imagine a first team United player saying they’d consider joining Liverpool? Why would you say something like that even if you were thinking it? You know I generally don’t give a rats what Liverpool fans think but you know I think Reina admitting he’d like to go to United is wrong. We haven’t bought a player from Liverpool since before World War 2 and there’s a reason for that. Players should respect the rivalry. This is just another example of the modern footballer and his casual disregard for the feelings of the fans.

  115. King Eric says:

willie – I am chilled mate. I was only messing about. I found it amusing,

  116. willierednut says:

    Dude, where’s my vodka?

  117. willierednut says:

So, everyones chilled, who’s round is it?

  118. utdforever says:

It’s amazing how cheap top goalies are compared to top strikers when they serve an equally important role. Forget Reina, too many mistakes.. besides do we really want a player that would switch from the scouse twats to us anyway?

No. Neuer and De Gea are the two we should be looking at with Stek as an outside contender.

  119. smartalex says:

Pepe Reina is taller than Heinze. Otherwise, seem similar. Push off!

King Eric – You calling me a dipper? Fuck off lol. Did you hear about Gray and Keys?

  121. Eddiemunro says:

  122. United1990 says:

This is how it feels to be Liverpool~~

  123. willierednut says:

    Deadpan, part 2.

  124. FletchTHEMAN says:

Reina is quality, but will not be our keeper.
To small, too costly, plus all the other issues.
But Reina is a top keeper with brains, top distribution and poise. IMO, Liverpoo would be insane to let Reina go.

Make no mistake, there is a Reina problem.
Reina at Arsenal or Spurs?….. hmmmmm, that would definitely be a problem!

  125. willierednut says:

denton davey – We still don’t know what money SAF will have in the summer mate. I hope you’re right though, and he gets significant money to strengthen certain areas, like a top keeper and a top CM.

  126. Red Devil Canuck says:

    No thank you..

  127. denton davey says:

WillieRedNut @ 16:54 : “significant money to strengthen certain areas, like a top keeper and a top CM.”

Huge disparity in cost for these two positions – as Utd4eva (@ 15:53) said it’s amazing how relatively “cheap” keepers are. In contrast, to “top CM” like De Rossi or Schweini will cost double.

  128. Uras says:

Google Samir Handanovič in you will find the next VDS

  129. willierednut says:

denton davey – Quality does cost mate. The Glazers might decide, this is the summer to give Fergie big money, with the financial rules, coming into affect in a few years time. That’s what I’m hoping for anyway.

  130. FletchTHEMAN says:

Willierednut Cheers mate. Agree, there will be some changes coming and going this summer. Don’t think it will come down to money, but more to the “right” man.
I am quite confident that they already have a deal for a new keeper, and I guess it is either Steks or Neuer. What appeals to me about this is how classy it would be if United really did have such a deal in place and that everyone is able to keep it quiet.

Very confident that we will have 5-6 move on. Would be surprised if we don’t keep WR10 although he is on many fans departure list. Still think he is a future United star. As they say, this issue remains polemic.

  131. willierednut says:

FletchTHEMAN – Yeah mate, the stealth approach, like Hernandez. We done well to keep that quiet, given his form this season.

  132. Big Pea says:

Pepe Reina? No thanks, he’s a Liverpool player and not amazing imo. Amusing he wants out though.

Shay Given? Fuck no, short arse, overrated, shitty bench warmer.

We’ve just signed a keeper ffs, a United fan to boot, let’s give him a whirl I say.

  133. Marq says:

No thanks. He’s made quite a few howlers that stick out in memory.

  134. willierednut says:

    What keeper hasn’t?

  135. Shimo says:

Think a lot of people that rate the Neurs, De Geas and others forget one thing – the leagues they play in are nothing like the PL in a lot of ways. We are a lot more physical, a lot of the teams we will come up against day in and day out like to throw high balls into the box. They pressure the keeper a lot more than in other leagues.

To that effect you can’t say Reina has been found wanting. He has dealt with that for years now and him coming to United would be no big transition. On the other hand any of the keepers coming from outside the league will have that period of adjustment. There is no telling how well they’d do in a league like this.

Reina may have made a mistake or few in the last couple of years but, he is only 28. Those are the years you expect your keepers to still be making an odd mistake here and there. VDS had a howler against West Brom just this season. Top keepers will make a mistake from time time. Reina though hasn’t been that prone. He’s played in the toughest of leagues, in the biggest of matches and the most heated of rivalries.

When it comes to replacing VDS, there isn’t another keeper that in my mind that comes to the level of Reina. Most likely won’t happen but, if there is a clause that we can trigger – I’d say worth every penny considering how important our defense has been to our success.

  136. theboogeyman says:

willie, Cedars, Eddie, King Eric- Dudes what the fuck happened up there? I’m all muddled after learning me some physics!

  137. bchilds says:

I can’t see the transfer happening but, in an ideal world, he would be right up there on my list of ‘keepers!

  138. King Eric says:

willie – Yeah mate I saw your link. Typical Talkshite, scraping the bottom of the fucking barrel again. I hear Mike Parry has fucked off? Best one on there. Fucking medal less cunts.

  139. CedarsDevil says:

You talking to me? Are you talking to me?

  140. denton davey says:

WillieRedNut @ 17:19: “this is the summer to give Fergie big money, with the financial rules, coming into affect in a few years time.”

This might be the summer that the Glazers sell the club to the Qataris – then SAF will be “pressurized” into spending !

A while back, StateSideAussie made the point that SAF has settled on a plan of continual turnover in the playing staff, with most new recruits being young. In the last five years there have been three major “big money” signings – Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick and then Dimitar Berbatov – but lots of new recruits who are now slowly working their way into the first team squad (or else being cut adrift). I don’t see this strategy changing – it’s part of a business plan, just as the increased contracts for WayneRooney, Nemanja Vidic, and so on have been pegged to the “less than fifty per cent of turnover” balance sheet. In tie next year or two there will be quite a few guys leaving – SirRyanGiggs, Edwin, RedNev, Paul Scholes, probably Wesley Brown, Michael Owen, Owen Hargreaves – who will “free up” lots of salary slots.

So, possibly, one or two really expensive newcomers but otherwise what-we-see-is-what-we-get. FIRST, four point lead, and the best goal difference yet still “crap”. You have to admit that that ain’t half-bad.

And, in all honesty, I’d love to see a really top-class keeper like Manuel Neuer and a really top-class central midfielder like Schweini but would be happy with maintaining strength in goal.

  141. shteff.mathers says:

fuck him ,sign stekelenburg or neuer….i think stekelenburg is better..reina has a lot to learn

  142. brisbanefan says:

    “Reina for Old Trafford?’
    Forget it.
He’s simply not good enough. Too prone to make silly mistakes
Not the sort of Gk to instill confidence into the defence.
The Dutchman Stekelenburg seems to me to have the necessary attributes.
He looked good in the WC whereas Reina made a couple of howlers.

  143. willierednut says:

denton davey – The Qatar group? That’s a pipe dream, but I dream anyway, to quote Ronaldo. I can see Hargreaves leaving, unless United adopt a, pay as you play policy. We don’t know yet, If Paul Scholes will follow suit. Some have suggested, Carrick could be surplus to requirements, I disagree. We can’t let Hargreaves and Carrick leave the club, that’s just stupid IMO. Like you, I expect comings and goings in the summer, but the eternal question still remains, will the owners cough up the dough? The jury Is still out on that, heres hoping.

  144. parryheid says:

An excited groundsman was shouting found it ,found it, turns out he had been rooting among the grass cuttings because it was thought Hargreaves hamstring might be there.False alarm just an old bootlace.Time for the chickens to start clucking he he.

  145. willierednut says:

Oh parrheid, you little rascal lol.

  146. Goninho says:

Reina is quality as someone has already mentioned he has kept the dippers in a lot of games and has been their most consistent performer. He is a top keeper and would only make us stronger.

  147. reddevil1878 says:

uummmmm, anyone remember the balloon?? P.I.G is better for myliking.
