Liverpool’s Torres Reveals Why He Was In Rio’s Back Pocket

Despite the impressive 24 league goals Fernando Torres scored this season, Liverpool failed to compete for any trophies this season. Dropping out of the title race half way through the season, having their FA Cup run ended by Barnsley (snigger), as well as being knocked out of Europe and League Cup by Chelsea, Liverpool fans had little to celebrate this season.

Whilst most scousers looked forward to “next season” with great anticipation, as always, they had to watch their hated rivals lift the league trophy and European Cup. What a way to rub salt in the wounds.

However, their talented striker doesn’t seem at a loss, despite the shambles that is going on behind the scenes, as much as the results on the pitch. Yesterday, he had a dig at the defences in this country, claiming they give him too much room.

“The central defenders (in the Premier League) are usually big, strong, aggressive lads,” he said. “I guess it is probably because of these characteristics that the majority think they can solve problems by getting tough with me. But the truth is most of them lack defensive positioning as a result of their reliance on strength and aggression and leave so much space for you to take advantage of.”

If that is the case, why did Fernando Torres spend two matches in Rio Ferdinand’s back pocket this season?

At Anfield, we didn’t hear a whimper out of the scouser’s “saviour”. After a very quiet first half, you wouldn’t have even known he was on the field in the second. He was given a rating of just 5/10 from Sky Sports, in comparison’s to Rio Ferdinand’s 8/10 Man of the Match performance. United scooped all three points at Anfield again.

In the return game at Old Trafford, United finished 3-0 up and Torres was even worse. Liverpool managed just one shot on target in the entire 90 minutes. Sky Sports again rated Torres 5/10, in contrast to Rooney, who claimed Man of the Match. After the game, Gerrard said of Rooney, “He destroyed us at the weekend.”

With ten minutes to go, after doing nothing, Torres was taken off for Riise. Doesn’t say an awful lot about Torres if he can show himself up as entirely inaffective on two occasions against United, particularly when, according to him, the defences over here are lacking in technical ability.

Torres is el nino, whilst Ferdinand is el hombre.

18 years.

  1. David says:

I was sitting in the crowd that day at OT, Torres was nowhere to be seen. He’s probably right about the majority of the premier league defenders though, most of them are really technically inept. Rio on the other hand is very graceful on the ball.

  2. charlie says:

its alot easier marking one man and looking good than having to worry about quality wingers and a decent strike partner which torres was lacking the whole season.

  3. Mr United! says:

When I heard of the comments he made about the defences in England, the 1st thing that crossed my mind was how he performed against United. He knows he couldn’t find a way out of Rio’s pocket in the two games, just as everyone who watched the matches does. I think that he decided to praise Carvalho, as he felt he couldn’t be seen to be praising the great defender of his teams great rivals! Either that or he isn’t big enough to admit that Rio was the best defender he faced.

  4. James says:

well, yeah well said.. but you cant expect him to score in every big game for liverpool isn’t it? but 33 goals in a debut season for a foreigner is phenomenal.

  5. Jose Luis says:

I have to agree that he found it tough against Ferdinand AND Vidic, 2 vs 1 usually means the 2 come out on top. this article should mention the part Vidic played in making Rio look so good…

  6. red dawn says:

Rio the best defender in the premiereship what a joke if you told me overrated and expensive you would have been spot on! Best defenders are carvalho, Skyrtel & Cannavaro.

  7. Colie says:

How about you try and realise that carvalho was the only one to try and not kick him off the pitch as terry, ferdinand and vidic had no problem doing, which actually led to masch being sent off as torres got booked for being lashed three times by utd players to everyones surprise torres got booked and masch got sent off. And torres took such a kicking from utd defenders including hargreaves(filth) benitez had to take him off so as he wouldn’t get injured from utds tactics.

  8. Loset says:

god yer heads are big eh – torres makes a comment about defenders in england and he doesnt single out Rio for ‘special’ comment?! give us a break… the poor kid managed to outscore all your strikers – even ‘rooney the great’

  9. Denis says:

The more you talk about him like this the more it shows you lot fear him.you would love to have him in your team. you lot kicked him of the park but if you do that to ronaldo you cry about it

  10. Matthew says:

The game at Old Trafford was controlled by Steve Bennett – nuff said…

  11. jsos says:

Colie you seriously here trying to defend Mascherano’s insanity by blaming it on United? Come on now, surely you have something better than that. Aside from it not being on topic, it’s a laugh. Your boy Mascherano had to be forcibly removed from the field. It was shameful, as even most scouse can admit.

That said, Rio outplayed Torres.. hands down. He wouldn’t stand for the diving and told el nino so throughout the matches. Those discussions should be welcomed, however, as they were the only indications that Torres was still on the pitch. To say that Ferdinand was kicking Torres off the pitch is bollocks. But no need to defend Rio, he’s clearly the best around in defense ;)

Course Torres DID admit VDS was a keeper to be reckoned with.. and so, it seems he has a little sense still hidden away in there somewhere

  12. reikirebel says:

Its easy to judge others … and even easier to react to anothers judgement …. I would be very careful if i was torres as his comments will attract greater attention next season …. but i would also aviod dissing his comments or again they could come back and be a problem next year …… I smiled at the comments as I thought thats all they deserved, you guys don’t need to react, just smile as you know who came out on top last season …..

    Good luck for next season

    Reikirebel :-)

  13. Trader says:

Rio is a fantastic defender, Torres is a fantastic striker. However, if youre comparing like for like, Torres is in a different league to Rooney. Rooney can be fantastic but produces in about 10 games a season. For example, was Rooney even on the pitch in Moscow? It didnt seem like it!

  14. Kex says:

Those comments will bite you on the ass next seaon sunny jim.

  15. Jerome Hobbs says:

Just happens with some players. Hyypia used to have Van Nistelroy in his back pocket most games.

  16. OMelhorDoMundo says:

Trader, Torres produces in the big moments, especially away from Anfield, right?

Carvalho is the closest thing to Ferdinand out there. Obviously, Torres wouldn’t dare compliment Ferdinand because he’s never found a way around him and because Ferdinand just scares the shit out of him like Keane did to his midfield opponents but Ferdinand can take Torres’s comments as a compliment. Ferdinand is the only one out there who can match Torres’s speed and anticipate his every run. He gets rough on the kid as well and if that’s an excuse for not performing, then Ronaldo can walk off the pitch two minutes into every match.

  17. addy says:

did any scouser even make it to moscow??

  18. C.Andrewas says:

“Ronaldo can walk off the pitch two minutes into every match.”

Yeap defo all the way to Madrid

  19. Stephen says:

Torres is a top striker but a fucking fairy. Rio is the best centre back in the world on current form. John Terry kicked lumps out of him in ECL semi and Torres obviosly doesn’t like being roughed up.

But in this country that is how the majority of players defend. Rio out paced and out classed him in both games.

  20. ace says:

torres was in spain being asked why he’d scored so many goals in england. he stated that the defences in general weren’t at the same level, which seems fair given his vastly increased scoring level. he singled out one defender, carvalho and a few keepers including yours. i wouldn’t take it as a slight to ferdinand who clearly had two great games against him. ronaldo certainly seems to be doing his best to walk off anyway…

  21. 5 Times (Yes 5!) says:

A fairy that scored 24 PL goals. Wouldn’t mind some more of those fairys then!

You call Torres a fairy when Ronaldo throws a hissy fit every time somebody tackles him where as Torres gets on with it. That is why Torres scored more goals from open play than Ronaldo last season.

  22. gus says:

robbie keane best striker in premiership

  23. Gary says:

Colie, Matthew….why are you on this site? It seems lfc fans have United on the brain 24/7. Look I know its hard to stomach watching United dominate English football and completing an easy league double over lfc year after year but dont be bitter. At the end of the day lfc are still easily the second biggest club in England and you should be proud of that.

  24. Sunraged says:

“Torres is a top striker but a fucking fairy”

Ironic bearing in mind Manchester are trying to hold on for dear life to the Sugar Plum of all fairies.

Manchester United have the indian sign over Liverpool at the moment, that’s all.

A little bit like Middlesbrough over United, and Manchester City.

Liverpool lost at Old Trafford because they bottled it-plain and simple. They weren’t out thought, they just bottled it.

  25. shankly gates says:

at least torres wants to stay at liverpool unlike ur waste of space ronaldo. ron dosent show up in big games and the only reason ur defence is any good this season is cos of vidic. the chavs from manchester will never outclass us so stop tryin to act like ur a great team. in fact it took u nine years to get to the final and the only reason ou won that was cos of a stingy solskaer goal. r.i.p united

  26. Stevie H says:

Define biggest Gary…cos you’ve got loads of money? OR cos you’ve won one LESS league title and two LESS European cups? Obsessed with YOU?who sings anti LFC songs when you’re NOT even playing us? You wish you had our sense of self and pride. People are irritated by interesting opinions and identity NOT by bland corporate whoredom.

You stand for everything that’s bad in the football world. You’re not even based in the city of Manchester! Trafford United would be more apt ( or Cockney Red United)

  27. Loset says:

Gary – we only end up on here because the page comes up on Newsnow for liverpool… most likely the same reason you mancs end up on the liverpool sites

  28. shankly gates says:

    re: gary

if you didnt notice liverpool have more trophies than utd so stop tryin to say u’s are better. Penalties that united gave away at the stretford end were never given to other teams and the so called ”respect” campaign seems to ave only been used wen we were playin u’s. wat about nani?? you will always be in liverpools shadow!!!!!!!!

  29. Denis says:

Trader, Torres produces in the big moments, especially away from Anfield, right?

yeah inter millian comes to mind and chelsea

  30. C.Andrewas says:

    “second biggest”

18 league titles to your 17

5 european cups to your 3

  31. KingOfZamunda says:

    Gary- genius mate!
Colie- shit for brains, parroting the drivel from el nino, would you have said the sane before Torres’s comments? Didn’t think so!
    Trader- seriously silly!
    Matthew- your point?? Sheesh.
SCOUSERS FCUK OFF OUT OF HERE, YOU HAVEN’T DIDDLY SQUAT ON UNITED!!!!

  32. Stephen says:

HA Ha typical scousers living in the past no championship for is 18 years!!

Move on boys!! your beloved Carrahhhhhhhhhh is one of the dirtiest and overated defenders in the league!!

Go back to your own site!!

    and Ps Champions!!

  33. KingOfZamunda says:

C.Andrewas- how many of the 18 league titles and 5 european cups were in your lifetime? If they were., what bearing do they have on here and now?? Sheesh, another punky scouser hits the floor!!

  34. RedDevil87 says:

I agree that Liverpool is still the most succesfull club in England.
But seriously, when was the last time liverpool won the league title? They’ve not even won the EPL to begin with. And they last won the CL in 2005 while we’re newly crowned European Champs.
My point here is, spare us from boredom as we’re not interested in history lessons. Face the fact that we’re the better team than Liverpool at this very moment.
Your 18 titles and 5 cups are just facts from history. Those facts wont deliver you any winning formula, just *yawn* lame bragging rights. We’ll overtake that rights someday too.
You guys are just consistently INCONSISTENT.
Thats why Rafael is always ‘beneath-us’ (Benitez)

And geez, so what if most United fans are outside of Manchester? You don’t win trophies based on your supporters’ identity, dont you? ;)

    P/s: I’d RATHER walk alone

  35. imi says:

the fact that all you are even paying attention to his comments underlines the class and quality of the player….

As a liverpool playereven i would admit It is true to say that man poo played us out the park in both matches, tho maybe be with alttle from that b****** ref ….

But usually it is liverpool who destroy man united without getting the correct end result….

As for rio he no doubt is a good defender… and believe me its hurts me to to say any of this….. but John ‘ hogga’ terry is far better….

Anyway get ready for a whoopin this season…… youv had your fun :P

  36. tommy says:

    ref red devil 87
it is a while since we won the league
but does it really matter what name it has ? first division epl who cares same competition..and as for the history lesson
you cant escape your history especially when its as good as ours..but the gap isnt as big as you like to think (or as your gob)heres a few boring stats seeing as you like a yawn..most clean sheets..liverpool most goles scored this season in all comp…liverpool most players with double figures…liverpool (6 in all nearest was chelsea with 3) lost less games than yous… reserves win almost everything …fergie about to retire ….ronaldo leaving..yeah its all looking bright for yous right now…were on the way up back were we belong…hope yous enjoyed it while it lasted cos its about to end ……..in rafa we trust

  37. gary1664 says:

RedDevil87, well done for recognising that it’s a long time since we last won the Champions League. Three years is too long considering we are the no. 1 ranked club in Europe and got to keep our most recent trophy by winning it five times. Even Chelsea and Arsenal are ranked higher than United in the Champions League seedings. But with only two semi final appearances in the eight years between 99 and 08 it’s clear why you are in the shadow of Europe’s elite.

  38. Redronan says:

With all the big talk about man u being great the big truth is Mr Fergi saved your club from oblivion 25 YEARS it took you to win the prem and it was arsnal who broke our dominance not fergi. But fergi is a great manager and you man u boys will relise this most when barren times return even fergi cannot beat farther time.

  39. Scott the Red says:

Gary, you kindof make a mockery of your own stats there. Chelsea and Arsenal are ranked higher than United… yet neither have ever won a European Cup whereas United have won 2 in the past 9 years lol.

  40. RedDevil87 says:

bah….liverpool fans. Thats what they always say and thats the ONLY thing they can say after yet another season of mediocrity, which is “watch out for next season!” and etc.
Fine, lets just wait and see. I’m always one thats keen on looking towards the future, regardless of it being bright or bleak.
But at least I’m definitely not one that dwells on past history, reminiscing cups that have been mostly won when most of the 20 and below year olds are still too young to know what football is…

As for the boring stats of liverpool’s season, its not quite a DOUBLE eh? Don’t resent me as I currently have the bragging rights cos we’re the new champs of Europe.
But mark my words, I’ll definitely start all equal with you guys when season 2008-09 kicks off.
    For now, lets enjoy EURO

  41. blindkat says:

God it must be sad to be a scouser, to know deep in your heart that the glory days are long gone, that your club is on the way to obscurity, no money poor owners worse fans, etc. No wonder they read United web sites, can you imangine how sad their sites must be? Must be all crying and wait til next year shit. I feel your pain it must be difficult to watch all the success and adulation United deservingly get and think it could have been if only my parents didn’t condemn me to a life of shitty teams and bad songs. Still at least your not chelski, oh that’s right they’re better than you too sorry

  42. RedDevil87 says:

Btw, i was referring to the new liverpool fans aged 21 and below. Dont talk history and pride with us if you’re just relying on YouTube replays of your old cup triumps, and then claiming that you’re lifelong Pool fans who have the greater history.

  43. Stephen says:

Yes Tommy, “In Rafa we DO trust” United!!!

  44. jimmy Bob says:

Look out here come the dippers!

untd have won 1 less lge titles
(although they have won ten since the dippers won their last one so in a 2 or 3 years that will be over taken)
5 european cups v 3 will take a but longer but it will happen

and we won’t be responsible for the deaths of any innocents on the way either

ps torres didnt get a kick v rio twice last year read it and weep dippers

  45. jimmy Bob says:

ps its no wonder yesterday was written by scouser thats all they bang on about

thats the thing with history someone else’s is always bigger and better

  46. ojala que mueras manchester united says:

“Rio Ferdinand is the best center back in the world”………………. HAHAHAHAHA that has got to be the funniest thing i have ever heard. I see him make more mistakes then anyone else at man united. He plays with no passion, he lacks intelligence, he wants to be England captain thinking his previous drug scandle (however many years ago) will not come into account. The guy just comes across as an absolute joke

  47. Sunraged says:

and we won’t be responsible for the deaths of any innocents on the way either

    The ramblings of a prick.

Manchester United I am sure are proud to have ridiculously stupid knobheads like you supporting them.

Were you even alive during Heysel or Hillsborough?

This is about football, not the deaths of people who’s relatives still feel their loss.

Whilst I appreciate you’re attempt to retaliate, I would, if I may draw your attention to a couple of points:

    1) This was, until you decided to start deliberately trying to antagonise some of the posters on this board, a discussion about Torres and Ferdinand.

    2) Whether I am truly morally outraged or not, you remain an imbecillic prick-whether from Manchester or not (I couldn’t give a fuck where you’re from) for tring to make yourself popular on a fucking computer by posting distasteful comments about a footballing disaster.

    3) It may surprise you to know that the majority of Liverpool fans are disgusted by so called fans who chant about Munich

    4) The majority of post pubescent Manchester United fans would consider you a cunt for making references to Heysel.

Oh, and 5) Don’t waste your time trying to engage in a pissing contest with me-start goimg out, get real friends, find other ways to feel good about yourself.

HIS ARMBAND PROVED HE WAS A RED TORRES TORRES

  65. Scott the Red says:

C Andrews – I personally find it embarrassing that you ripped off a John O’Shea chant for your precious Torres.

“I want to be a red he said, Torres, Torres.
We turned him down and then we signed Tevez, Tevez
Now he’s playing for the scouse,
When he’s away they’ll rob his house,
Fernando Torres, Liverpool’s full of crime”

  66. Flame says:

Well dont forget you have to come to fortress Anfield next seaon. What is it 6 years unbeaten 5 years of winning their. Shudnt we get 2 keep it?

Oh and history is important who could forget the treble season but when your talkin about over a generation ago, is that not like a Nottingham Forest fan thinking they are still a big team?

  67. Flame says:

Just to add United are clealry the biggest team in England by a long strecth and to suggest diefferntly because of trophies would be like saying Arsenal Chelsea and Blackburn are bigger then Liverpool as they have at least all won the Premier League!!!

  68. Rusty says:

I thought Steve Bennett was MOM at Old Trafford, never has one man had such an influence on a game.

so technically it was 10 man Liverpool against Man Utd’s 14.

Just imagine what it would be like, if the teams were playing on a level field.

  69. jimmybob says:

yes it was bennett who missed that cross for browns goal
it was bennett who hurled abuse time after time at the ref including telling him to fuck off
it was bennett who left ronaldo unmarked from a corner

and it was bennett who let nani have all the time in the world to run unchallenged and pick his spot to make it 3 nil

    another deluded dipper

ps level playing field maybe anfiield earlier in the year? hmm 1 nil united

oh dear in rafa we trust lol

  70. Gary says:

Define biggest? Well I think you will find United’s history goes further back then Liverpool’s. Liverpool were not even a big team before the late 60′s and Everton were the most recognised club in Liverpool. United dwarf Liverpool for fame and glamour. Even when you were dominating in the 70′s and 80′s you had a chip on your shoulder bcause United would receive more attention from the media then you. United introduced European football to England, were its pioneers. United have far more famous players, far bigger history, far more charisma then Liverpool. Now get back to your lfc fanzine websites and behave yourselfs!

lfc = 30 miles from greatness and self pity city

  71. Gary says:

You need a goal but take him off Torres, Torres, Hes a hit but your still shit, Torres, Torres, you brought the lad from sunny Spain then went and won FUCK ALL AGAIN! Fernando Torres Liverpool’s number 9

    nananananananana

lfc fans like so many Manchester United are the object of your facination

  72. Gary says:

As for the laughable Steve Bennet excuses going around I would like to point out something. In the last 6 league visits to Anfield United have won 5 and drawn 1, we have won the last 4 on the spin at Old Trafford and in 8 league games Benitez has managed 1 draw and 7 defeats and scoring only 1 goal which was an own goal by John O shea in a game we won 2-1. Have you got excuses for all these results aswel?

  73. Gary says:

    reply to Scott the red

Arsenal and Chelsea are ranked above United?????? I dont understand that statement one little bit? Ranked above us in what?

As for all the comments about United fans not being from Manchester thats just hypocritical coming from lfc. Spot the scouser on the kop!

  74. Anon says:

so technically it was 10 man Liverpool against Man Utd’s 14.
    _______________________________

actually no, it was actually 8 man Liverpool against 12 man United. No Mascherano, Gerrard and Torres in your side plus the awesome Old Trafford roar on United’s side.
