Wayne Rooney scored a hattrick against Club Brugge this week, after going 10 games without a goal. United then won a penalty but Rooney opted to allow Javier Hernandez to take it, in a bid to give him some confidence in front of goal. Unfortunately, Chicharito missed, but Louis van Gaal was not surprised that Rooney allowed Chicharito to take the penalty.
“I am not surprised because he is a very social guy,” he said. “It’s unbelievable. He’s a real captain, which I’ve said before. He cannot do it when it’s 0-0 though, then I’d be very angry. But in this circumstance, when it’s 4-0, it was a great gesture from him.”
It has been revealed that Van Gaal has a system which means if you miss a penalty you go to the back of the queue. Van Gaal was asked whether Rooney was now United’s penalty taker, following Chicharito’s miss and the sale of Robin van Persie.
“Do you want to know? I don’t know if I can say that because then I will make our opponents stronger.”
