There was plenty of criticism aimed at Louis van Gaal for starting Marouane Fellaini at Anfield in his first game back from injury. Aside from the fact the midfielder isn’t very good, his inclusion in the team means United are tempted just to hoof the ball up the pitch.

In the 2-0 defeat against Liverpool, this was done all game, but in the end, only lead to one chance for Fellaini late on, which he missed.

In today’s 1-1 draw against West Ham, Fellaini didn’t have a dreadful game, but he was frustrating to watch nevertheless. With 14 minutes left to play, Fellaini was replaced by Bastian Schweinsteiger, who hasn’t featured since the beginning of January. Fans in the Stretford End were on their feet, cheering the substitution. Seven minutes later, United equalised.

After the game, Van Gaal has expressed his disappointment at the fans’ reaction to Fellaini going off.

I think Fellaini played, again, a good match. He performed well in our game-plan so that [the crowd reaction] was disappointing but it was the only moment that I was disappointed. The fans were supporting our side in spite of two losses this week. Maybe they have another opinion to me.
