After signing a new five year deal at Manchester United, Anthony Martial has reflected on the impact the fans have made on him during the past few years since he first joined the club.
I’m very happy to have signed, it’s my fourth year at the club now and I’m really happy to be here. It really means a lot to me being at this great club and I hope to continue to do well during these next few years.
It’s a really special rapport [with the fans] because they are always right behind me, even when I wasn’t quite showing my best form, they were always there for me. I think that’s absolutely brilliant. So now I hope to be able to pay them back by scoring lots of goals.
I think it’s important to know that you have the backing of the fans, because when things aren’t going so well, you sometimes hear certain comments about me wanting to leave. But me, I’ve always had that feeling that I wanted to stay here, in spite of any difficult situations. I think it’s that which has helped me to keeping hoping I could give them something back out on the pitch in return for the support they’ve shown me.
My first game, against Liverpool with that incredible feeling and sensation with all the fans and the fact I’d managed to score. To tell you the truth, that totally showed me just what my new environment and this club was really like, it was truly an amazing moment.
It was no secret that he didn’t have the best relationship with Jose Mourinho, with our former manager ready to sell Martial last summer, but the Frenchman is enjoying life under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and thinks the sky is the limit in terms of what this team can achieve.
I think the manager has that culture of being a real Mancunian and I think he manages to convey and transmit that to us. He gives us a lot of freedom and shows his confidence in us. That’s much better for us and we are now playing and performing as we know we can.
I like to win league titles and why not the Champions League too? I think we have the team to achieve that and in the future we’ll continue to strengthen the squad. These are things that every player would like to be winning. So I’d like to win everything, that’s all!
I hope to score a lot more goals and above all try and win trophies because that is the reason I came here. With the team we have now and in the future, I think we’ll be able to achieve great things.
People say that we have some really great players for the future, they have great ability and quality and we know that they will continue to make huge progress in the next few seasons and I hope we can continue to grow together and win silverware together.
