David Moyes has often been criticised this season for having the wrong mentality to be the Manchester United manager. Maybe it was when, ahead of Newcastle’s trip to Old Trafford, he vowed we would make it as difficult for them as we possibly could, that did it. Or maybe it was, after getting thrashed by City, his assertion that we were striving to be as good as them. Or possibly when, ahead of Liverpool’s visit to Old Trafford, he labelled them favourites.

Yes, there have been far too many occasions this season when Moyes has spoken like he’s the manager of Everton and not the manager of one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Ahead of the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich, Moyes has taken to the programme notes to expose his small club mentality.

“We have certainly displayed some of our best football this season in the Champions Leagues. With the exception of the away tie at Olympiakos, I have been really pleased with much of what we have done. The players have played well and lookedcomfortable at this level, and on many occasions the way the games have been played has suited our players.”

A lot of our players played in three Champions League finals in four years. Comfortable at this level? Of course they are. They’ve been there, done it and won the cup. According to Sporting Intelligence, United have won more prize money than any other club in this competition since 2007-2008, based on how well they’ve done.

You’re not managing Everton anymore, Dave!
