Mr Liverpool: I Take My Hat Off To Neville

Jamie Carragher, who has already revealed what a massive fan of Sir Alex Ferguson he is, also has very kind words for Gary Neville.

“For me he’s the best full-back the Premier League’s had,” said Carragher. “And also just behind David Beckham probably one of the best crossers of the ball we’ve seen. For me he’s the best full-back the Premier League’s had. People always talk about the rivalry between Liverpool and Man United and of course it exists. We want to beat them and they want to beat us but I have great respect for Man United as a club and I hope that’s vice versa. We’re two of the most successful teams, two of the biggest teams in the world, and for me Gary Neville’s been one of the main reasons why that’s happened. A great player, great pro and to play at that level for so long is a fantastic achievement so I take my hat off to him.”

Thank you for the memories G Nev

I managed to get tickets to United-city! My first United game ever after supporting them for 12 years! Could somebody on this forum suggest a great way to spend matchday at Old Trafford?

  2. smartalex says:

Fair play to carragher, whom I despise.

Also true that if you don’t take your hat off Gaz will knock your fucking block off!

  3. AnomanderRake says:

I have respect for Carragher now…

Takes a lot to bridge that gap and say that about our LEGEND

  4. shubhangmanred says:

I can bet 20 bucks that this guy is gonna rip apart that chick with a dick on Sunday.

  5. Zelh says:

There’s so much about this rivalry, but mr. liverpool always had kind words for united.

    much much respect for that.

    so rip that ladyboy apart.

  6. Scorp says:

Carragher has such nice things to say about us it makes me wonder if he has his eyes set on a coaching job at United.

  7. Mikey Moo says:

Any player who commits 20 years of his career to one club and gives 100% every game is worthy of of a special mention. Carragher is in exactly the same league as Neville and will one day receive the same plaudits. I doubt with so many mercenaries in the league these days that we will have many other players displaying the same loyalty and commitment of either Neville or Carragher, obviously discounting Giggs & Scholes of course.

  8. manutdisadream says:

    hm, kind word from carra.
    respect

  9. Red Dave says:

To be fair, in the last 20 years Carragher is the only Liverpool player that hasn’t merited total contempt. Unlike Stevie Me who should still be in prison and is bitter that on 2 occasions he agreed to sign for Chavski and then bottled it Carragher is like RedNev in being a loyal one club man who’s never tried to tell the management how to run the club or where they should play. He’s a real fans’ player and respects Gary for being the same.

Mind you nowhere near as good as Nev of course – oh, and no Premiership medals.

  10. Xyth says:

Fair play to Carragher to say those nice words for Nev, particularly in these difficult times for him, when he lost his bit on the side!!

  11. cfp says:

as much respect as carragher deserves for being a bindipper voicing out his thoughts about a legend, he is full of sh*t. There is no way he means any of that. Hes probably at stevie g’s gaff now laughing at it.

  12. Macheda is GOD says:

Can you stop calling Carragher “Mr Liverpool” Whenever he talks about us? For the past few years he said nothing but respectful comments about united and you’re always trying to take a piss.

  13. Twisted Fatboy says:

Don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to a Liverpool match before….. or wanted them to win….. Can’t say I haven’t wanted Torres to get hurt before though.

  14. Shak says:

Well u can’t compare him to nev, one he’s shit, two he’s one fuck all, n three nev played for the team he supported, carraghers grew up an everyon fan
but nit taking anything away from the scouse cunt, he knows when credit is due

  15. Davey says:

Liverpool fan here (via NewsNow) and have got to agree with Carra, Neville is not exactly my favourite person in the world but easily the best full-back in the Premiership era. Ashley Cole is the only one who comes close and he can’t hold a candle to Neville’s medal collection.

He’s one of those players whom you love if he is on your side but everyone else hates (I suspect that may well be the case with Carra himself). A shame for you and him that he didn’t just try for one more home game for a farewell, but I suppose he has done the selfless thing in packing it in now so you don’t have to pay his wages or suffer another of his performances where he is a liability (only nowadays of course).

I like to think that as Carra says, despite the obvious rivalry between us, which is natural for two local hugely successful clubs, there is an underlying, often hidden or unspoken respect, which too is natural.

Thanks for the support on Sunday. Handing you a 19th title isn’t top of our priorities but this is gonna be a grudge match and I’d rather worry about our own pride than what is going on with you. I just hope Carra manages to avoid getting sent off if he plays…

    P.S. to Scorp
If you rob Carra off us, you can forget all this respect business, I’ll go f…ing mental! :D
He’s gonna be the King’s apprentice!

  16. AnomanderRake says:

    @Davey says

“I like to think that as Carra says, despite the obvious rivalry between us, which is natural for two local hugely successful clubs, there is an underlying, often hidden or unspoken respect, which too is natural.”

    That is true.

I laugh at those morons from Wastelands way more than at your lot.

  17. DohaRed says:

Fair play to Carragher. He is Liverpool’s equivalent of Gary. Gives his all and total loyalty for the club. You have to respect him for that.

Davey – surprising as it may seem, there are a lot of true football fans amongst United’s fans. A lot of us can hold respect for other teams and other players. The greatest matches in the Premiership are United and Liverpool and always will be. Two great clubs with fantastic history – both on a level above any other club in England – Arsenal and Chelsea just no comparison

  18. Altonian says:

Good to see this sort of thing still in the game, respect to Carragher.

  19. King Eric says:

Choccy – Ha ha ha. “Next years our year” Good grief I wish I could have a fiver for every year I have heard that. I would have a hundred quid.

As I said on the last thread I actually quite like Carragher. Seems a decent bloke, always speaks fondly of United but above all else he rang Durham and put that wind up no nowt in his fucking place.

Fair play Jamie. Now snap that tranny fucker in two on Sunday pal.

  20. United4eva says:

Comments like this is why you cant compare the rivalry of Man Utd and Liverpool with the rivalry we have with any other club. Small teams e.g. City cant understand the mutual respect that two heavyweights can develop over time. The passion, the intensity, the dislike is there and its strong but at the same time you can’t be so blinded by small mindedness and BITTERNESS that you cannot accept the achievements of the other side and respect them for them.

Players like Neville and Carragher would do virtually anything within (and sometimes without) the rules of football to see United beat Liverpool or vice versa. But when they leave the pitch they both ‘get it’ that the side they just played has a history and a tradition thats worth acknowledgement if nothing else.

  21. FletchTHEMAN says:

At last, an interview that didn’t contain statements about Gary’s lesser qualities or somehow stating that GNev was not the most talented. FFS, I am getting sick up here with those mealy mouthed threads.

Gary Neville was first choice RB at United for 12 years, end of story.
Phenomenal crosser of the ball which was still evident in his CL and PL games last season.
Folks slagging Gary must only be thinking of the last 2 years when united had a reasonable replacement in Rafael. But I tell you what, even last year, Rafael was a heart attack, going missing at times and single handedly bouncing us from the CL (well maybe a bit unfair)

Red Nev. He was a player.
    602 First team games
    18 years first team service.
    5 years United team Captain.
    35 years a true Red.

Thanks Carra, I think we all respect your words about Gary. First class!

  22. willierednut says:

Heard this on talksport. Fair play to Carra, he put the Liverpool, United thing to the one side, to give RedNev credit he deserves.

  23. hammons says:

im a bit shocked to read Carragher’s comments about Neville…..

  24. LiverpoolQED says:

    Another LFC fan via NewsNow

Congratulations to one of the best fullbacks that ever played in the Premiership. I watched him in Portugal in the Euro’s when he covered his own position and Beckham’s to drive England on!

Much respect for our rivalry and a passionate player who epitomises everything that is good about our respective histories.

Now, I’m pretty resigned to you lot getting No. 19 this year, but next year… we equalise!!

  25. sankgupt says:

Not sure whether this was mentioned in any other post, but looks like the Author has lost the plot here.

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/feature/_/id/875234/netherton:-manchester-united-success-could-be-costly?cc=4716

Just like the deluded pundits who predicted us to finish third this year.

  26. chicharito14 says:

now that is a proper CLL.

  27. Mickjk says:

Gary nevilles crossing was immense. Definately one of best crossers of the ball I’ve seen. Suppose with age that aspect is sorta overlooked. Every one is saying he had more desire than technique or skill should watch a few. It’s somethin nani lacks and Valencia is amazing at it too. Impressive stuff.

  28. AnomanderRake says:

    @sankgupt

That is the DUMBEST article on the world wide web .

It actually claims Fergie and United fans have a frosty relationship!!!!!!

And the main argument that idiot tries to make is that it would be better for United if we dont win anything this year.

  29. fergie is the boss says:

listening 2 talksport, it adds more fire to my fury on how much I hate the scousers especially tony evans the gimp

  30. ste says:

Liverpool fan & Scouser born and bred (again via news now)
Davey and Carra were spot on in his comments about Gary neville
cant stand the lad but total respect fro whatt he and United
have achieved over the years. Liverpool V United on a par with Real V barca and Inter V AC
as the biggest games in the world.
cant believe ye gonna take over our league record but dont forget, 5 TIMES!!!!!!!!

  31. scottygeoff says:

I am a lifelong Liverpool fan who like all scousers hope that utd get beat every game. HOWEVER like fans off both teams know good teams & players when I see them. There is no arguement that UTD have had the upper hand in the pml years(as we had before). Although a hated gaz running to the crowd &kissing his badge when u beat us, I had to admire his pride in beating the the ‘real rivals’. Congratulations to ‘GAZ’ on his great career & best of luck for his future (hopefully not on sky!) – sadly I fear loyalty like scholes, giggs, carra, gerrard & himself are being replaced by greedy players like Rooney & Torres, who know the value of money, but little else.

  32. FletchTHEMAN says:

    @ RedOctober
Especially like Gary Neville #1 as he looks a bit younger.

Excellent work as usual son. Keep it up.

  33. Lfc for life says:

Respect to neville, not a fan of his really, but one thing is,what I great loyal servant to utd a true pro, come Sunday at chelski bum boys,I hope skirtel snaps his fucking legs…

  34. Lfc for life says:

    Torres that is guys 

  35. Collyhurst Red says:

    @sankgupt

I have just read that “article” and can honestly say I have never come across a worse piece of journalism in my life.

I seriously think that their website has been hacked by a bitter bertie!

    What a load of bollocks!

We’re Man United, we’ll do what we want.

  36. NicoQB says:

Now Neville was a very good crosser of the ball, excellent in his best season too, but let’s not distort history though.

And to claim that valencia is a great crosser of the ball is also grossly exaggerating – he’s good at the low cross, but he needs to dribble past his marker to do it .

A *great* crosser of the ball – like Beckam, Ashley Young or Downing don’t necessarily dribble past the immediate marker, and can alternate the low cross with the high bender when necessary.

But even then, vision and other attributes are still necessary.

Downing and Young may be better crossers than Valencia, I’d still pick Valencia ahead of them as he’s better in other aspects. Its about the whole package really.

    Oh and Seba Veron!

  37. Doghouse says:

Wenger and Bruce are kind of right, compared to Becks, Giggs and Scholes he wasn’t in their class, but let’s be honest each one of those players could find a place in the top twenty players in the history of the sport. Scholes and Giggs would arguably be in the top five. That Gary Neville was the best English right back of his generation, arguably the best English right back ever, that’s still not going to get him into that pantheon. But he was still really fucking good.

Good to see Carragher showing that respect though. I know he gets stick from his own club for saying things like that, but I think it shows a lot of class to give respect to a worthy adversary.

  38. dazbomber says:

this is a true conversation between my mate Steve at work , a bitter blue and his dad,
    I ill set the Sean.
We were at work in Stretford United had won at Anfield and City had lost to Wigan.

    Steve’s dad -sorry son .
Steve -fuck off dad. slams the phone down, says under his breath cunt
I swear this is true i still laugh now
    blue twats

  39. Dave Malaysia says:

@dazbomber: is the mysterious aquarius making this shit up? lol

@Davey 18.58: Dude speak to Jamie ,tell him to smack Torres on sunday,ok? and tell both suarez and caroll to score against chelski ok? And tell caroll its ok to top terry and tell suarez its ok to chomp on the chimp terry, preferably that loose dick.

    arigato . banzai!!!!

  40. Dave Malaysia says:

@Davey: did u guys abuse macherano? he on in the media saying u guys made him feel so bad?

did u,how cud u,u mean mean people. say cud u do the same for torres, just a thot,up a notch though,i mean he is only in london.

now we dun condone any kind of negative behaviour,so please be good.

  41. Dave Malaysia says:

must ask ma sifu ,what karate or kungfu move are gary and jamie doing?

  42. keanesmagichat says:

    http://premierleagueupdates.blogspot.com/2011/02/goodbye-gary-neville.html

gary neville going mad after a prank calll.. socking it to some little dickhead!

  43. shebangsthedrums says:

Yubee7 – A visit to the bishops blaize before the game is a must, it really gets a good atmosphere going, although there won’t be much time because of the early kickoff.

  44. vika09 says:

Finally managed to link back to this blog on mine.

  45. fergie is the boss says:

mad world. last year torres said he loved liverpool, rooney wanted 2 stay at united for life. One year later, rooney wanted to leavue, and torres went to chelsea saying some disgraceful things about a club he said he loved. Warning guys do not rule anything out next season

  46. Park Life says:

ABU TalkShite was at it again with Dickhead Durham leading the ‘thousands of better RBs better than Nec’ campaign… Sagna? ffs… the rest were just ABU pisstake callers but he banded a list of players that haven’t done fuckall or ‘attacking RBs. People forget players at their prime and evidently Ingerland fans took him forgranted… Shameful

  47. fergie is the boss says:

Park Life – lets see where sagna is in 3 years time.

  48. Davey says:

@Park Life: What do you expect from Ingerlund fans, they wouldn’t know a proper player if he booted the ball at their faces. Repeatedly. With lovely technique and accuracy. This is because most England fans are Southerners who support teams too shite to actually feature the kind of player they take for granted and boo.

:@Dave Malaysia: Masch wasn’t too popular at the end, no, but what does he expect? He wanted to move all Summer and people were willing to let him go (it was family reasons apparently and if that is the case, fair enough). He then played against Arsenal first game and played great. Even though we knew it was likely his last game, we applauded him off.

Then he refused to play against City (because Barca hadn’t stumped up the fee yet) the day of the game and wrecked Hodge’s gameplan making us play a different formation (we lost, though God knows what Roy would have had in mind :p).

It doesn’t surprise me that he has defended Torres. I could have let Torres leave and not had his memory tainted but the way he has gone about leaving is just a slap in the face (which incredibly Chelsea fans don’t seem to understand).

@ Fergie the boss: True. I would never have thought Torres would do this to us. He clearly wasn’t ecstatic but I just never saw this coming. Reina is constantly being linked with you which I could never ever see happen a week ago but maybe my naivety has been punctured because the idea doesn’t make me laugh as it did, it makes me wince…

  49. fergie is the boss says:

Davey – I have no clue why he went there, if he wanted 2 win titles then why didnt he go 2 united where the players at united were far superior than liverpools.

  50. Giggsy81 says:

It is certainly going to be sad to see him go. He has been a great servant for this club and it will be interesting to see whether he goes into being a football pundit now or management.

I for one would love to see him discuss a Liverpool game. heh.

Best of luck in the future Gary if you’re reading this.

p.s. I’ve just seen that Febian Brandy might be joining Preston as he is on trial there, some of their fans wanted Man U fans opinions.

    http://pnefc-online.co.uk/transfers/febian-brandy-training-preston/

I thought would should have maybe held onto this lad. I can’t believe he hasn’t been snapped up by now.

  51. Davey says:

@Fergie the boss: You haven’t got a clue lad, we’re so good we can afford to loan out Paul Konchesky. Word.

  52. willierednut says:

Maybe Reina also wants to leave for a bigger club. At least It would be the actual truth this time.

  53. Davey says:

@Willierednut: I think even if Reina did leave us (and I honestly don’t think he will, next season at least) he’d know not to join you. After Torres though who knows…

  54. FletchTHEMAN says:

Frankly, I will eat my shirt if we buy Reina.
Why would we want Spains 3rd or 4th string keeper? We havn’t had a 6’2″ keeper since the frenchie and look how that turned out.
First and foremost, Reina is not United standard, too short and makes to many sloppy kicking errors. I would rate him way above Ben Foster, but not above PIG. Even in a peno situation, think I would go for PIG.
Second, think it would unsettle the back line. Rio and Vidic would just want to kick him all the time.
Third, it would just take all the joy out of watching a United game and confuse the children.

  55. willierednut says:

Eat your own shit? You’re on your own there Fletch.

  56. willierednut says:

Sorry shirt lol. Thought that was way too much.

  57. Rai says:

Willierednut – Hahaha I thought the same!

  58. smartalex says:

Tea shirt? Or is that faecaetious?

  59. Davey says:

You’re having a laugh if you wouldn’t take Reina. 3rd or 4th choice? You saying Valdes is better? No chance. If Casillas hadn’t been established as first choice for so long, Reina would get in ahead of him (or certainly would have been given more of chance). The only other country in the world who Reina wouldn’t be a shoo-in for is Germany and I still think he’d be in with a shout.

Then again, I should know you’re not to be trusted if you honestly think Kuszczak is better.

  60. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

I hate Liverpool. They hate us, its immense. But honestly what he’s said is true, we are the 2 clubs that have big histories ( ours better) and in all honesty Carra is a decent lad. While i have so much of hate for liverpool for city and chelsea, i have respect for liverpool and not the other 2, not even in tiny weeny bit. Neville for the world.

    @ Davey

I rate Reina really highly. He’s a great keeper and if i do wish the rumours of Sir Alex putting a bid for Reina in the summer. He’s relatively young and really reliable. but then, the move’s impossible.

  61. Jeet says:

Fletch – immense comment about Rio, Vida and the confused children! Wouldnt want Reina anywhere near OT

  62. Red Devil says:

Must applaud Carra for being a fair sport…one of the few dippers I can tolerate and wouldn’t have minded him in our team a few years ago, especially after Stam, Johnsen, Blanc etc all retired or left…

  63. Ash says:

Respect should be given where it is due and like our gary carra is also a legend of liverpool.Players like scholes, giggs, neville, carragher are class.
    @scottygoeff
Dude how could you put that cunt gerrard in the loyalty list.He is like our rooney.Even if rooney ends his career at united he wont be considered the same like nevilles or giggs.Gerrard wanted to go to chelski and everyone knows that.I would even prefer lampard to gerrard.Gerrard as a player is good but as a loyal player and person i very much doubt.
Anyways hope this time you guys beat chelski and humiliate them instead of giving backpasses to them.
    UNITED FOREVER

  64. KING ERIC BG says:

I think Carraghar is coming up with those comments just to be able to compare his sinking club (and himself) with our success (and Gary’s). Why somebody didnt do such thing when they were ‘top of the table’ (looooooooool) ???

  65. catotraa says:

    @Yubee7

NO SHIT?! Exact same thing here! Have supported them for 12 years, since i was 6. I got a trip to England to watch United for my 18th birthday, and i choose to watch us play City! Praying to SAF (God, lol) that Neville will be there to say goodbye.
Anyways, can’t fucking wait! Citygame will be massive

  66. Fergie's gum says:

    Now,give ‘em hell on sunday

  67. smartalex says:

Our next sunday game is 6th March vs loserpool.

  68. james says:

Ive always had respect for Carragher as a professional, the scouse cunt.

  69. King Eric says:

fergie is the boss – Hello pal. Yeah Tony Evans does my head in too but fair play to him when asked about Nev. He said he would love to have been him. Playing for the club you love and being able to wind your most fiercest rivals up. He was quite congratulary toward him.

However they were getting VERY carried weren’t they? Saggers the fucking posh clown saying that next year they could be back and all that shite.

  70. Paul Parker says:

mr liverpool haha bet you’d take yer knickers off too ya cunt lmao

  71. philk says:

Jamie is a true gentleman, a role model to many players

  72. sports24x says:

will respect you for this comment..carra..

  73. Written Offside says:

Credit to Carra for these comments. Fair play also to Thompson on Sky who said much the same.
