Nani: It’s Great To Be Back… And Top

Nani has today revealed how frustrating it has been to be out of the team for so long but that he was happy with how he played against Hull.

“It was very frustrating to be out injured, but it happens in football. I’m back now and I feel very good,” said Nani. “I was happy with my performance and I just want to keep improving every week so I can help the team be successful. Everyone is very happy. It’s great to be top of the table and it’s given everyone a lot of confidence. We’re playing well, scoring goals and feeling good.”

    Hurray!

  3. afromanc says:

Think the right hand side suits nani more. Seems he struggles as a right footer on the left side…too bad valencia has already earned that spot.

  4. RedMist says:

HIs last two performances have been miles better than his usual standard. More like his first season. He’s doing the simple things better and getting the ball into the box much earlier.
    Keep it up lad.

but nani does have 1 maybe 2 world class games a season
maybe he gets a boot up the hole and it gets this moving
but i hope it doesnt mean someone has to lodge a boot permentl up he anal passage

I posted that on another thread ghtt, hope it is true.

  8. Mclovin7 says:

He does look better down the right and plus he can use his left foot which is something valencia can’t do. Let’s see him down the right side more often then we migth see his true potential

  9. Aidan Casserly says:

He needs to be more consistant .. he still slows down the forward momentum too many times to be the missing link on the both wings for me.

I’m very happy he did his job the last two games .. but that’s what he’s paid to do .. do his job. If I didn’t do my job everytime I was paid to do it, I think I’d be lucky to stay employed! But again, very happy he’s keeping things simple yet productive .. long may he do so … we need all the Utd players to start hitting their peek until the end of the season .. not just Rooney ..

  10. Costas says:

Good to have you back Nani. More of the same please.

His free kick was quite similar to the Ronaldo ones. He is getting there. :P

  11. Stretford-end.com says:

He played really well Saturday and put in a great cross for Rooney’s header. Its a shame that type of form is far too inconsistent. If he stays in this transfer window, which I think he will, then he has a big five months ahead of him.

  12. Jig3000 says:

It’s no surprise that Nani performed a lot better on the RHS of midfield, as did Rooney with a second striker to play-off. Fergie’s an odd-nut when it comes to playing lads out of position, perhaps it’s akin to an apprenticeship where you get to appreciate other positions to better understand your team-mate and their limitations / constrictions. Who knows? I aint got a cupboard full of silver so I’m not going to disagree with the man.

  13. Red Devil says:

Keep going lad….For the sake of United, please prove us all wrong and make the grade here. All the best young man.

  14. United4eva says:

I don’t think Nani plays better on the right. His best game for United the 4-0 in the FA Cup 3rd round against Arsenal two years ago came when he started wide left and he began the season there looking pretty good: cutting in from out wide to score in the Shield against Chelsea, crossing for Rooney’s winner against Brum on the first day of the season.

I don’t think it matters much what wing Nani’s on cos he’s two footed. What matters more is his morale. He’s a confidence player, the kinda player who needs the arm around the shoulder treatment as his interview earlier this year showed. When he’s feeling confident he’s great but he suffers from self-belief problems which means he often hesitates on the ball.

He can be a consistent performer for us if he gets some hard headedness…

…or some TLC from the boss.

  15. willierednut says:

Spot on United4eva, i always thought nani was 2 footed so he shud be comfortable on either wing.

  16. King Eric says:

Surely it was Becks masquerading as Nani as Saturday? Keep it up Nani lad.

  17. piggysbeeftrousers says:

I’ve been one of Nani’s biggest critics but i thought he was very good on saturday – less unnecessary fannying about, and some great first time early balls into the box. Also saw him put a couple of decent tackles, which stunned me. He needs to use this as a springboard now – it’d actually be difficult to drop him for wednesday now, and i never thought i’d hear myself saying that.

  18. ledders says:

To me Nani has always had talent but he seems to be a bit of a sulker when things arent going his way. Hopefully his confidence will be up now and he can play to his full potential and stop being a fanny

  19. afromanc says:

All he needs to do, which is exactly what he has started to do, is keep his head up more before he makes decisions. Good on ya!

What pissed me off unbelievably on sat was Gibson having a sitter of a through ball for rooney right in front of his eyes and instead he goes for an absoulute waste of a shot on goal. gRINDED MY BALLS!!!!!

  20. Simply Red says:

Glad to see Nani make an outstanding perform in our last 2 game.

I’m remember in season 07/08 he make a great game vs Arsenal (FA Cup) which make Gallas look shite…wakaka…then he get’s card for his action.

Hope nani will more improve and develop into a great player, cause he had great tallent and skill but has to be more consistent and mental like Ronaldo.

I agree with the “two footed” comment but I think that when Nani plays on the left he is combining with Evra and that means he is less inclined to play direct by simply driving to the bye-line and crossing the ball. Down the right, none of the fullbacks – not even Raphael who was stuny by Bellamy in mid-week – provides the same level of partnership that Nani gets while playing with Evra.

  22. fooart9 says:

i love when the third Rooney goal every one went up to hug and congratz Nani…this is why i love this club…they support each other like a family

  23. nani17 says:

we need him 2 ttry 2 show more n keep going like that he was v good agenst hull

  24. Rooney22United says:

I think when Nani was injured, he spent some pretty useful time doing some football theory. The game against Hull, he made good decisions, penetrated when with space, crossed the ball at the right time. He has slowed down.. which has helped his brain processing a lot (no insult intended) that’s what he needed in the beginning.

  25. willierednut says:

I dont think it helps wen people compare nani to ronaldo.

  26. Always Be Closing says:

Only two people mentioned his name before your comment – so as soon as you stop posting about him, the sooner we’ll hear nothing of him.

  27. Costas says:

    @willierednut

Nah, they are different. Nani doesn’t have the blistering pace or the tricks Ronaldo had. But he might be a better crosser of the ball. What I said above and I think what Nani is working on, are his free kicks. He might be trying to hit them ala Ronaldo.

  28. utdforever says:

Nani on the left. Valencia on the right against Citeh please Sir Alex. Attack Attack.. ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK!

  29. willierednut says:

    @costas

I know there different players mate, i just think nani can be a top player in his own right. I noticed the free kick against hull was simalar to ronnys free kicks. Always be closing, the next time i mention ronaldo ill run by you first.

  30. Costas says:

    @willierednut

It has been unfair on him and Valencia that for a while commentators refered to them as “Ronaldo’s replacements”. No one deserves that kind of burden. Valencia started becoming his own player and hopefully Nani is on the way too.

I was happy for the free kick for another reason. As fantastic as Wazza has been, he rarely troubles the keeper with them!

  31. John Ferry says:

sometimes all you need is a little confidence to get you going again. Good for Nani.

  32. Fze123 says:

He was outstanding against Hull City, and was even tracking back, something I haven’t seen him do before. Keep it up Nani, I hope you have learnt from your mistakes.

  33. aaron says:

    is ‘injured’ the new dropped?

anyway gd to see that his time out has had a positive impact on his game. hopefully he’ll push on frm here to challenge for a first team spot and not regress again like hes previously done.

  34. bchilds says:

It’s great to have a decent looking Nani back, keep it up lad!

  35. stretford972 says:

lots of reds reckon that nani’s problem have been down to a lack of confidence and poor decision making. Both of those appeared to be much better on saturday. Personally, i think he needs to bulk up like fletcher did so it makes it hard to knock him off the ball. But if he plays like that 9 times out of 10, he’d prove me wrong when i say we should get rid. Really hope he does. The gaffer must see it in him otherwise nani wouldn’t have survived criticisin the boss

  36. lionell84 says:

if he plays like that 9 out of 10 times. He will be challenging for the FIFA World Player of the Year :)

  37. themarkedman72 says:

valencia has never played that well.
    Nani dribbles better.
    nani crosses better.
    Nani has a left foot.
Valencia is good with an incredibly powerful shot and a goood change of pace but more workman like.

Nani can take free kicks and corners. as well.

  38. Scott the Red says:

TheMarkedMan – Valencia has never really played that well? Have you been watching us play recently? He’s running at defenders, beating them, getting the ball in to the box, scoring goals. Only Rooney and Berbatov have scored more goals for us in the league!

The fact that he’s been voted the best player on the official site for the past two months running suggests that he has been playing well.

  39. DforDerivative says:

Maybe the solution is play Nani down the right and start to see Valencia as a central player. I know he plays CM at times for Ecuador, and has been by all accounts amazing. I think he could do a good job pushed further forward too, somewhere just behind Rooney and using his pace and power to beat people and make late runs into the box. His finishing seems to be coming on, so maybe that’s something we could be thinking about.

  40. DK says:

It’s fabulous to have Nani back among the living. As for Valencia his pace is tormenting defences. Give him the ball to run at defenders for the first half then in the second half swap with Nani to finish them off with tricks then put Valencia back on right flank for the last 20 minutes. There is no team in the world that can will be able to face that.

  41. King Eric says:

The marked man – What? Valencia aside from the boy wonder and Fletch has been United’s best player this season. Bizarre comment.

  42. OBIAKONWA ROMANUS says:

Manchester united will beat their city rivals by 3 goals to 1 and proceed to finals to face Aston Villa
