Ahead of Sunday’s League Cup final between Manchester United and Southampton, Phil Neville has revealed that his father allowed him to skive school in 1990 to take him and Gary to London to watch the FA Cup final replay against Crystal Palace.

Thursday came, dad sneaks into school, gets me and my brother out, drives down to London. Mum didn’t know. I missed my German test and dad was in the dog-house with mum. Dad said, ‘Look, lads, I can guarantee when you grow up you will not need German!’

As soon as Lee Martin scored, dad said, ‘Let’s go, beat the traffic, get home. Mum’s not happy.’ But we wouldn’t leave. We wanted to see Bryan Robson hold the cup.
