New Look RoM

So here we have it, the redesign for Republik of Mancunia is complete! There may be the odd glitch or two over the next few days and welcome any feedback.

Hope you like it.

Not so keen on the massive ad at the top of the page, kinda takes centre stage over the ‘Republik of Mancunia’ title. But, hey, I’d probs do the same for the extra money so can’t blame ya. Other than that… I think I like it but it’s hard to say at the moment lol I think it’ll probably grow on me!

As an illustrator, working alongside graphic designers everyday, I suggest that the banner could link bank to the home page on each post. Also, the fist is a nice image, however the ‘tattoo’ is very faint; maybe it could be altered?

I check this blog every day and I always think the banner’s font is very strong and quite… neo-Russian Constructivist, and if that is the theme which this site is aiming for, Russian propaganda, then there are many different traits and hints available for that ‘look’, just ask your graphic designer :]

Overall, it’s a strong layout and I think it reflects the attitude and power of the protests, but there is room for improvement…

Looks good Scott, a couple of things:

    1) The comment box remembering user name and email address would be useful like before
    2) Colour filter between the comments so it’s easier to see where one post ends and the other begins

Liking the new layout though, thanks for your continued hard work.

Its ok Scott. I realise that advertising is needed to keep a website going but I think McQueen is spot on about the add at the top. On a sarcastic note I would have thought with the publicity that you have given the green and gold some of the scarf money could have fallen your way to atleast keep some of the flash adverts at bay. My lap top is heating my lap and its all very normal to be aroused by my processor fan going ape at the emo midget porn that sometimes finds its way onto my screen but getting aroused (because of my computer blowing warm air) whilst looking at Rooneys fat balding head is starting to worry me. Im a bit conservative and never one to embrace change (if its not broke don’t fix it) but well done it looks fresh and modern and with it as it were.

  5. Robin says:

Awesome Scott, really like the new color vibe. Anyhow on a site with heavy discussions like ROM, why don’t you activate the comment reply feature?

  6. Costas says:

Overall, the design is better than before so good work Scott. My only problems are the ones that bchilds mentioned. Everything else is perfect. Like the fist!

  7. McQueen says:

After some more time browsing the site, I totally agree with bchilds suggestions. It’s gunna get mighty annoying having to re-type my email address! Sound pretty lazy, I know, but the small things make a difference! And it would be a bit easier on the eye with a comment filter.
Also, Robin may have a good point with the comment reply feature.

Anyway, seems like a good time to say thanks Scott for the hard work! It’s a great site you have here, however you make it look we’ll still be on here reading your stuff so keep it up mate.

Having to put in my username and email is a pain but over all i like the new look.

  9. Berbatov is a rolls royce says:

Loving the new look……….but couldn’t we have the site/background colours as Green and Gold to back and highlight the campaign?

  10. kaihnsn says:

    hi scott,

look good but just cant get out the old look from my head though. one thing i want to comment is the font look so small on my 1680×1050 screen. the red font on right column doesnt give a good contrast for a good reading.

  11. aaron says:

    @McQeenrt
just use mozilla or chrome and get an ad-blocker plugin, i didn’t even know there were ads until u mentioned it

  12. Fred says:

    I don’t like it. :-(

  13. Tony STarks says:

hmm i wonder if there could be more adverts on here!

  14. Bass says:

I love how modern the theme looks now.

There are some issues like the others said ie the big advertising up top.

The only thing that bothered me though is the jarring red font colour for links on the sidebar and for the pages up top. For the page navigation up top, you could try using the same red used in post titles while the links on the sidebar could be a more subdued red or even a nice grey tone (or perhaps try gold for the top and sidebar)?

Everything else looks great though and I love the new header image and clean bg gradient

  15. bchilds says:

Have been having quite a few Microsoft warnings about the site not being safe and having malicious software since the change, anyone else had these?

  16. NC says:

Scott, the RoM “links” dont work from the homepage – you’ve gotta enter the individual page to get the links.

  17. Ellioman says:

Agree with bchilds about using color (gradients?) to seperate comments…

  18. Scott the Red says:

Thanks for the feedback guys. Like I said, there are always a few problems with big changes to the design (and an upgraded version of WP) so bear with us.

In response to a few of the things mentioned…

    1. The ads are there to pay the costs of running the place. To host something as big as this costs lotsa dough and we don’t make any dough other than from the ads. I could get out my begging bowl…? :D
    2. If you get any error messages coming up/Microsoft warnings, please e-mail us via the “Contact” tab at the top of the page – let us know your location and what the messages say/what the popups are.
    3. The cost of a redesign is very pricey and whilst I’m in full support of the green and gold protests, the Glazers may be long gone by the time we can afford another redesign lol.
    4. Is there not an option with your web browser that allows this place to store your name and e-mail address? Does Firefox not do that? Let me know if this is still an issue for people and I’ll have it looked in to.

  19. Costas says:

Cheers for taking the time Scott.

As far as the username and e-mail goes, I always use Internet Explorer when I am web browising and in the old ROM format, my details would be stored after I posted for the first time. With the new one, I have to fill in the gaps every time. I will try and see if I need to use Firefox to do the trick this time.

  20. Costas says:

    Nah, same problem with Firefox.

  21. karun says:

Its okay. You can’t click on the RoM links from the home page though. You have to click on the RoM links post to have access to the links themselves. minor issue I know but sometimes my internet connection can be crappy. fewer pages that we have to load, the better. :)

Oh and the new look is cool. feels modern :)

  22. Gee says:

    Looks good Scott!!

  23. Red Canuck says:

    Looks Great Scott!

  24. themufc1999 says:

Great design. Very powerful. To the people who are complaining about the ads, just enable adblock if you are on firefox and it blocks all ads out.

  25. Biku says:

I’m Red hole my body and mind but one thing conected with United is geting me upset (it’s conected with Muncks) I’m from Poland and for me RED STAR IS THE SAME AS SWASTIKA. I ts because we have been suffering even more from that cunts SOVIET ARMY than from Nazi (suporters calling themselfs red army is also geting me upset. ) so the new desing with that monumental soviet Hand is only the remainder for me how much my granfather (killed) , father , mother and my hole country have been suffering.
But my love to United is bigger than that

  26. Hardsy says:

Overall it looks much better than the original.

A few minor things, I think somebody mentioned it but having the title image as a link which redirects you back to the home page is always a nice touch.

I agree with the the theme looking slightly too Russian, it’s mainly down to the typeface used but on the whole it’s a definate improvement.

  27. Scott the Red says:

    UPDATE

Name, e-mail address and website are now automatically stored
