Ole: I Dream Of Returning As United Manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has just accepted the manager’s job at his former club Molde, has today revealed that once he has some experience under his belt, he would love to return to manage Manchester United.

“I am not ashamed of saying that if I enjoy management and that invitation came in 15 years time I would say yes,” he said. “Everyone who has played for Manchester United dreams about it. Me, Ryan Giggs, Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes. More than anything, the last few years have shown me you need experience and you need to be the best to be the manager of Manchester United. How the gaffer has handled the club and managed it is a fantastic example to anyone. He is the encyclopaedia of how to manage and I do daydream about what might happen in 15 or 20 years time when I have the experience.”

‘Encyclopedia of how to manage’, a phrase summing up Fergie that will now take on a life of its own. Brilliant. Thanks again for everything Ole.

I think Ole will make a top man manager, we will see if he will make a top manager at a big club. That requires timing and luck, as well as skill. A large number of former united players and assistants have been pipped for the job, only for circumstances to go against them. Many were high on Mark Hughes, until he went to Citeh that is. People have been hot and cold about McClaren, but any englishman will fail in the england hot seat. It is the kiss of death.

As to the philosophy of former players managing, I assume you are talking about former players of your own team coming back and coaching since you probably can’t find many coaches who never played the game. Ok, Avram Grant, enough said on that one. Don’t think many would agree that former players are a bad strategy. Barcelona has done rather well with their own, just to talk up a club that use the model to top effect. BayernM, Rangers, Celtic, Ajax, the list will go on and on. Any top club will generate personalities and experience suitable for top level management. The thing is, they must then be tested. Just like when they are players, most will fail. You might say that they almost always fail to be brutally honest. I personally hope that Ole makes a smashing success. But like McClaren going to FC Twenty vs Queiroz going to Madrid, some succeed, some will not.

  16. RedScot says:

You got to laugh, he says not word for word i am bringing Manchester united to Molde in a smaller way. I hope to be given time and wait for me to mold the team(Molde) as I see it. it might take 5 years.
Class to speak like that and I for one seriously hope you are given time Ole.
But football is a funny old game, cant recall who said that.
You were safe at United part of a huge family.
    Wish you luck.

  17. RichardJ says:

Let Giggsy get his feet wet with managing, and then bring him on as manager at United. in the meantime, Ole is always welcome. Maybe even Keano, but he probably wouldn’t take it.
