Owen: I Don’t Care That Fergie Wanted Benzema More

Sir Alex Ferguson blamed a crazy market for us not being able to land transfer target Karim Benzema. The truth was he didn’t want to come to Manchester United over Real Madrid. Michael Owen has said he’s not bothered that Benzema was Ferguson’s priority signing though.

“There were clubs who linked themselves with me just so they could give their fans something to talk about,” said Owen. “But there were also good clubs that made their interest known without it being made public. Yes, managers ignored me and didn’t think I could get back to my best. I do have some strong feelings about that. But the bottom line is that the one man in world football who I would want to have a good opinion of me wanted to sign me. If Sir Alex Ferguson thinks I am good enough for Manchester United that’s all that matters. He did mention he wanted to sign Benzema, but I don’t care whether I was his first choice or 100th choice.”

great attitude from this guy. I think he appreciates what SAF has done for his career and he’ll show that appreciation with lots of goals ! so i hope … benzema will flop with madrid , mark my words

  2. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

benzemas agent must be over the moon
he got his players name out the and got built up to one of the greatest players in the wold today
    even thou he’s done nothing
    welcome to the bench kid
owen get used to gold medels

  3. Smudger says:

The guy is just speaking so much sense. I love the positivity around him. He seems happy , all our players are happy that he has signed for us and i see most of the fans are. I have already started loving this guy :)

PS : Owen is fast becoming Scott’s favourite. We have at least one post on Owen per day. I am not complaining :)

  4. Radio Deadon says:

It’s still weird seeing Michael Owen in our shirt – but what the fuck, he’s a natural goal scorer and he knows he has been given the greatest chance of his lifetime – I feel he’ll repay the club (and Sir Alex) big time. Things are looking good, even it is stil pre-season.

  5. swissred says:

ahhh, i can’t wait for the season to begin. i like all the positive talking around the start of the season but noting replaces week in week out football and united winning and playing some great stuff…

owen seems decent to me, i really really hope he does well! i’m so excited, i can hardly contain myself ;-)

  6. jamos9 says:

On a separate note does any one know what time (GMT) the game kicks off?
    Cheers.

  7. aig alex is god says:

well said michael.heres ur chance to prove how good u are.

    @jamos9
Thanks mate.i have to go out.cant bear to miss a friendly.but dats how crazy i am abt man utd

  14. evras left boot says:

    @GHTT , well said lad . I think i read somewhere your irish ? where abouts ?

  15. Tong says:

Owen seems grateful and appreciative to be able to join Man Utd and revive his career. It is better to have someone with his attitude than to have a mercenary or someone who uses Man Utd as a stepping stone to a ‘bigger’ club like Real Madrid or Manchester City.

  16. adrian says:

I was pleasently surprised that the Malaysian Reds chanted Owen’s name during the Malaysian match and gave him a rousing welcome when he came on.

  17. Red.Shanks says:

well said owen…score again today and i’ll be there to celebrate…

  18. waynesworld says:

Nice one Owen. You pissed alot of Vermin fans off on Saturday by scoring on your debut, keep up the good work lad!!

  19. Jamal Yousuf Jaffer says:

Owen can spark Man Utd with partenership with Rooney and Berbatov and hope to play for many years and become a legend at Man Utd.

  20. DanS says:

He is certainly making the right noises. Well done son.

    Bang another on in today

  21. adrian says:

3 hours to kick-off (2nd match against Malaysian XI) and I have a feeling SAF will start with Rooney & Owen, can’t wait!

  23. ash says:

see the positivity in this guy. he doesnt care who all fergi wanted to buy.
i dont know y but my heart feeling says that he would be fergies best signing ever even better than cantona.

  24. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    adrian
i think its kiko and owen to start
aswell as tosic fab fab fabio wes brown and any other sub from sats game will start

  25. ash says:

hey i think gremio are cutting down the price of duoglas costa. maybe now united will be interested. i want to see him come to united.

  26. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    @ash
as ive already wrote on this possitivity is high
just came down there with the better than cantona sir alexs best signing ever :)

  27. aig alex is god says:

I remember reading a daily mail article about best signings in Football and Cantona was number 1.He was the one who started initiated the era of premier league dominance and it has continued ever since.

come end of next season,u will hear martin Tyler say

“they have been the best, they are the best again”

  28. Gudjohnsen says:

    Owen’s attitude > Teve$’ attitude

This is a true professional. I hope he will start today against the Malaysan team…

  29. READ CAREFULLY WHAT I says:

The ability to say exactly the right thing is not the only thing that makes this guy better than Tevez.

  30. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    A.I.G.
My brother said to me a fews years back that the english game is the worlds best at the moment because of 2 men
    ferguson off the pitch
    cantona on the pitch
    and the rest just ollowed

  31. King Eric says:

I used to hate the little cunt but the more I hear him talk the more I like the lad.

  32. Franco Mizzi says:

Owen will always score goals no doubt about that. That he has always been a decent chap is also very true, even when playing for the dippers. His attitude has been impaccable since joining us his comments very refreshing especially after Mercenary Tevez tirade against SAF. Come on Michael lets show the rest of the footballing world that you still have all the weapons in your locker.

  33. aig alex is god says:

well said ghtt.i regret starting to follow united in 2002.the more i hear abt cantona the more i feel i shud have followed him earlier.hope he returns to united in some coaching capacity.Given his history before joining united it was a big gamble.cantona, baby faced assasin, vidic ronaldo and rooney(owen will be there in few years)have beens bargains for us.

  34. gotta hate tiny tears says:

i just repeated what my brother said
he changed his middle name to cantona
    the crazy fecker
    eric was something special

  35. Xyth says:

Ex-scouser or not, Owen is ticking all the right boxes and really, really does want to do well. The better he does, the more wins we will get. We should give him all support that we can. Unlike Argentinian mercenary he did not sell his arse for the money, and is greateful for the chance presented to him to play for the best club in the world.

  36. Buildabonfire68 says:

Owen cant believe his luck last season relegation. This season a champion and the world cup to look forward to. Rooney dont play cards with this man.

  37. adrian says:

The problem with the recent “best signing” article was the omission of the Great Dane. That went down in my estimation. For me, the signing of Schmikes was right up there in the top 3, no contest.

  38. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    my top 5(in no order)
    peter schmeichel
    eric cantona
    wayne rooney
    roy keane
    denis irwin

  39. philco says:

Owen is a pro and knows what to say and when to say it, but he also has a point to prove to a lot of people such as the FSW. I cant wait to see him score against the dippers. Life is made for moments like that.

  40. Buildabonfire68 says:

Do you not think Ronaldo Deserves a place. 2 great seasons followed by an ok season and £67.5m profit.

  41. aig alex is god says:

    ghtt

come on mate ronaldo does deserve a place
as does solskjaer wen u consider sir alex bought him bcoz he failed to sign alan shearer. The great man scored one of the most important goal in the history of the club to complete the most remarkable comebacks ever seen in a major competition.

but it is ur personal opinion.it is difficult to choose 5 players .we have had so many greats in the last 18 years

  42. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    Buildabonfire68
    love ronaldo
but not near them 4 guys

  43. boam6 says:

i dont thnk ronaldo should be in the top 5 he wanted to leave united so why should he be seen as one of the best players, he wanted to leave united as real has always been his dream club so in my eyes anyone who wants to play for united and finish there career such as scholes and giggs they surely desrve to be there dont get me wrong ronny was world class but his attitude in the last season for me just doesnt put him up there although i will always think he was a great not quite up there for me personal opinion :)

  44. ash says:

    @ghtt
for the first time i disagree with u mate . ronaldo deserves to be in the top5. all the respect for other guys u chose but ronald is also equally good. the impact he made was big.

  45. gotta hate tiny tears says:

i know what your saying ash
but i watched the 1985 fa cup with my dad then watched united ever since and them 5 guys stand taller than ronaldi for everything they’ve done from day 1
    ronaldo 2 fantasic seasons
    but now he’s gone
for starters 4 of my guys gave all they could to united till they could give no more rooney will be hereforever
secondly they are 5 buys id put giggs scholes and nev higher on the list than ronaldo
but ronaldo would be higher than becks
they were not only gave 100% to united
    but they were 100% united
and then theres rooney who’ll give 100% forever

  46. gotta hate tiny tears says:

if id to put ronaldo in the top 5 who would i leave out

  47. aig alex is god says:

    ghtt

s i said it is difficult to pick 5 .so many players have contributed in our sucess.u r still not including giggsy, scholes and neville.dats wat i mean by saying u cant picka top 5.there have been so many class acts

  48. gotta hate tiny tears says:

its top 5 players sir alex has bought

  49. ash says:

yeah agree with u man that all the guys u spoke played for united they were the true reds. but one thing ronaldo should be counted as one of the gr8est man utd has ever seen. just bcose he wanted to play for real doesnt make him bad.

  50. theboogeyman says:

I don’t have a top 5 buys list since I started supporting United at the time when we signed Veron,Kleberson,Djemba2,Forlan,Bellion,Miller,etc(Also,we signed Ronaldo and Rooney and Vida and Evra and Berbagod). In my opinion,Sir Alex’s best buys are(in no order):
    Ole
    King Eric
    Schmeichel
Sheringham(Just because of that night in Barcelona)
    Keano

  51. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    theboogeyman
    good list
but Sheringham(Just because of that night in Barcelona)????
he did alot as well as that night
even the week before hand in the fa cup final when keane got injured and teddy came on and scored

  52. aig alex is god says:

    ghtt

    even dats difficult

we made 68 millin profit on ronaldo.we bought ole for 1.25million pounds.

we bought evra for 5 mn pounds.
we bought vida for 7 million

as u can see plenty of bargains

even van der sar was a bargain at 5 million.

  53. Jack says:

kuszacks suppost to be in goal with owen and kiko upfront

  54. theboogeyman says:

Teddy as well as Scholesy, completely forgot about that. But what I was trying to say was,if he didn’t achieve anything else,he would still be on the list.
As would Michael Owen if he scores a 93rd minute winner at the Kop End.

  55. RedMist says:

He’s making all the right noises. Good lad.
Sounds like he really feels he has something to prove and we could benefit very nicely from his determination to prove people wrong.
    Keep it up Micky.

  56. gotta hate tiny tears says:

id love him to score against liverpool
i just read liverpool, after a nil all draw in there first game, lost there second pre season game 1 nil and new(well overpriced) signing johnson could miss the start of the season

  57. Micky says:

I’ll have the game on.. I’ll do a bit of commentary for you… like Sky Sports text commentary haha

  58. Micky says:

I’ll do it on this topic so keep your eyes open and keep hitting F5 from 1.40pm BST

  59. aig alex is god says:

    Man Utd team news:

    Foster

    G Neville Brown Evans Fabio

    Fletcher Carrick Giggs Tosic

    Owen Macheda

    Subs: Everyone else!

    Weather: Humid, warm and dry

Prediction: I can’t see Malaysia scoring another two here today. I think it’s going to be an easy four or five goals to nil for United here this evening.

  63. aig alex is god says:

scott is doing a live blog too.this is dreamland.plz scott do this for every game.

  64. Micky says:

    Ferguson:

“You’ve got to give all your players minutes, that’s why we’re here”

On Owen “Interesting to see Owen and Kiko.. maybe Kiko played too deep last time but he was encouraging. There are some traits in Kiko that we’ve seen in Owen over the last decade. They’re threats and make good movement, something which Owen is good at.”

“I’ve no doubts about the quality of our game.”

“With the game only announced two days ago we couldn’t expect a full house tonight, but it’s still a good turn-out today”

  65. Micky says:

Owen: “It’s nice to play a game in the red shirt. I can’t wait for the first real game”

  66. aig alex is god says:

micky i knw scott is doing a live blog bt i cant follow dat link on my mobile.plz atleast tel me if smeone scres.

  67. Micky says:

Fuck Scott lol I’ve told him I’m gonna be competing against him!

Commentary starts in a few minutes!

  68. Micky says:

The teams enter the pitch, and line up.. I’m not naming the Malaysia team, balls to that!

  69. Micky says:

    14 min

    Malaysia make their first sub.

United look like they’re gonna run rampant in this game. Carrick is the midfield general so far with Tosic and Fletcher impressing too

  70. Micky says:

    15 min

Owen swings for a volley in the box but it’s just out of his reach and the keeper clears

Carrick with another ball to Tosic who miskick it for M XI to claar

  71. Micky says:

    16 min

Fletcher crosses, Owen with the glancing header but it goes wide

  72. Micky says:

    18 min

Good passing from United but it breaks down when Kiko fails to control

  73. Devilton says:

Owen to score a brace against the dippers…just you watch. He will have a cracking game against them to show that fat, daft, spanish waiter what a huge mistake he made.
