Owen: I Love Playing For United

After scoring a crucial goal in yesterday’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa, Michael Owen has dismissed rumours he is unhappy with his limited playing time at United.

“I am loving it at Manchester United,” Owen said. “There are plenty of people who want to put negative spins on things. I have four kids, I am living at home and playing for one of the best teams in Europe. It is not all doom and gloom is it? We still have the Premier League and the Champions League to play for, which I have never won so I have every reason to have a smile on my face.”

Sir Alex Ferguson has explained that Owen’s opportunities have been few and far between because of the excellent form of Wayne Rooney.

“I am very pleased the manager is suggesting I have done well in my first season,” he continued. “The way Wayne has played this season has been fantastic. In any other year he might have picked up an injury or been suspended and I would have got more games.”

    Good point, it would hurt wouldn’t it!

    Was looking sharp yesterday , shame with the injury. really felt this was the time he would have got more games.Instead its left us with a problem up front now. Rooney will have to play all games now.had Owen been fit he could have been rested against wolves and Stoke

  5. Macheda IS GOD says:

    GHTT that scared me a bit..

  6. Xyth says:

    He probably he was a United player from the beginning of his career. He would have won the lot then wouldn’t he?

    Anyway, it is good that he has accepted his position at United and is happy with it.

    I hope we win another Premiership title. He can than show his Loosepool mates what it feels to be a Champion.

  7. united0708 says:

    haha.. i was thinking, imagine owen took no 19 as shirt number…
    would that be very symbolic if we win the league this year. :)

  8. Costas says:

    What can I say? I have really warmed up to the guy. I always liked him because he seemed like a down to earth person, but I didn’t think he could cut it at United. It’s just a shame his injuries will always hamper him.

  9. Gudjohnsen says:

    The pitch wasn’t helping him, really loose and soft. I’m always happy when United score, no matter who scores…but I must admit that I get a little extra when seeing Owen score. He’s English and the media are constantly on his back wondering about the World Cup and etc. Same goes for Berbatov, I always get a little extra happy when he scores because of all the stick the guy gets from specific supporters and the media.

    Hope you understand what I’m trying to say, lol…English is not my native language.

  10. Costas says:

    A couple of interesting stats i saw recently. Rooney’s next goal will equal Solskjaer’s tally for us, so he is really becoming special now. ;)

    Also, in cup competitions(Charity Shield, League Cup and Ch.league), only 3 goals have been scored by players outside the UK and Ireland: Valencia’s 2 against CSKA and Nani’s against Arsenal. Just found it a bit weird. :D

  11. aig alex is god says:

    @Costas

    Certainly some interesting stats. I am sure you meant Nani’s against Chelsea and not Arsenal

  12. Costas says:

    @AIG

    Sorry, you are correct. Berbatov, Park and most of Valencia’s goals have come in the Premiership. One great thing about Fergie, is that he always tries to keep a core of British and Irish players in the side. They know what the club is about and adapt straight away.

    By the way, Nani should have had a goal against Arsenal too. No way that was an OG :P

  13. KingAbdullah says:

    Owen still has a couple more last minute levellers and winners in him this season. He’s doing his job

  14. Long John O'Shea says:

    sorry for the double post…. stupid pc was acting the gimp

  15. Costas says:

    @KingAbdullah

    I agree. I hope he recovers soon and manages to feature against Liverpool. We know how much he hates scousers!

  16. aig alex is god says:

    @Costas

    yeah. All of Berbas goals have come in the league.We currently have quite a few british and Irish players who are doing well and are talented.Hope to see a lot more of them in the future

    Not sure about the Nani goal.Was it going in??. Dont know for sure. Mesmerizing piece of skill though. Just for that Nani deserved the goal

  17. Costas says:

    @AIG

    He was going for a cross I think, but the ball was guided towards the goal. He inadvertidly chipped Almunia. Also, I am not a fan of goalkeepers getting awarded OGs. Unless it’s something very blatant.

  18. Costas says:

    I was counting the goalscoring ratio in all competitions. Owen has 1 goal every 123 minutes he has played and Rooney has 1 goal every 107 minutes. Just imagine what might have been if Owen could play week in week out.

  19. aig alex is god says:

    @Costas

    What better can you expect from Almunia?.Is really clumsy at times with his handling and positioning

    Anyways. Good night. See you tomorrow

  20. oneunited says:

    Well owen’s attitude at united has been top class, who would have thought 7-8 years ago we will be cheering for him!

  21. kel says:

    I really wish he can play more. I not sure why i like him a lot. I hope he can get more chances to play and score some winning goals to make us win the Premier League and Champions League. Isn’t that a nice feeling to have?

  22. Costas says:

    @AIG

    That’s true. And he has been involved in our last 3 wins at Arsenal. The 4-2 win in 05 and the two 3-1 wins this past year.

    Goodnight mate.

  23. King Eric says:

    Costas – Stattttttoooooooooooo!!! Where the hell do you find them? Infact where do you find the bloody time?

    Interesting nonetheless.

    I cannot believe I actually like Owen. I used to hate him at the dippers. Thought he was a boring little wanker. He has been the model pro at United and you can see all the players like him alot. Nev and Giggsy were celebrating with him at one point yesterday. Sorry for his injury as he is only 1 goal off double figures this season. Superb really considering how little game time he has had. Hope he finishes his career at United now and helps us along the way. Who’d have thought it eh? United fans not just liking him but singing his fucking name. Excellent stuff. It must have hurt the dippers yesterday seeing him bag a goal in a cup final and go celebrating infront of the United fans! Priceless.

  24. King Eric says:

    Gudjohnsen – hello mate. I know exactly what you mean, always nice to see him or Berbatov score.

  25. King Eric says:

    Costas – Oh absolutely mate, Fergie loves to have British players in his squads he always has. Unlike Mr Wenger who has done his utmost to rid his squad of British players.

  26. Costas says:

    @King Eric

    Ha, it didn’t take that long really. There is a very good stats website called soccerbase. I used it to see which games they played in and for how long.

    I am like you. I can’t believe I was gutted about him yesterday or that I want to see him start more often. If you remember, I wasn’t a fan of the transfer back in the summer. Unlike you though, I never had a problem with his character. He seemed a easonable lad. After all, after you have had a dose of Robbie Fowler and Stevie Me, everyone else looks like a saint!

    The other nice thing about yesterday, was the variety in our squad. You had legends like Giggs, Scholes, Nev, new hungry guys like Valencia, the twins and Evans, players with a new lease on life like Owen and the group that has carried the team the past few years: Rio, Vidic, Evra, Carrik, Fletch and Rooney. And they all celerated in the same manner.

    You can’t find that combination of variety and unity in other teams.

  27. boam6 says:

    Glazers have just said united aren’t for sale after The secret meeting! Hmmmm interesting

  28. Carlow Redz says:

    I thought Owen was one of Uniteds best players in the 1st half yesterday. His movement was excellent, he looked sharp and was coming deep to look for the ball, always making himself available. Pity about the injury, hopefully not too serious and wont miss many games. A chance for Diouf maybe?

  29. reddevil forever says:

    i think he really deserves more time on the pitch good finisher

  30. james21 says:

    And we’re glad to have you with us Michael. What a shrewd move by SAF yet again. Hopefully we’ll see him lift the Premiership trophey and really rub the Scousers noses in it.

  31. jamjoe says:

    Michael Owen had played approx 9.5 games when he completed his hat-trick in Germany and since then he has hardly played.
    It is doubtful if he has been on the field for more than 13 games in total and yet he has scored 9 goals.
    A very healthy striking rate.

    Journos with an agenda against Owen point to his “appearances” but they mean nothing as you have to measure it in actual games.

  32. wayne says:

    cannot ask anything more of him i still think taking him as a super sub for england would be a smart move apart from rooney no one has his finishing ability

  33. Sign-up-jimmy.bullard says:

    Luv mickey he’s a beast, wud lik to hav seen him nd roondog up front a bit more together … He’s best finisher around still , makes up for his lack of speed with his genious runs . Luv the guy . Nd alright king eric ? Remember me?

  34. King Eric says:

    Sign up Jimmy Bullard – Yes I do remember you how could I forget. You alright?

    Costas – Yes mate I do remember you being sceptical about Owen in the summer and you had cause. I wasn’t best pleased but I knew he was a goal scorer. Have really taken to him. The added fact that deep down it must piss the dippers off is a bonus. Can see him getting us some big goals this season.

  35. redscot says:

    Sorry Lad’s I typed on this Blog last nite. I was just sooooooooo Hyper( pist) after our Fantastic Win. And as FOR Michael, wot can you say pure class. I ignore twat’s like Stan Collymoron. ( Talk shite)It’s called jealousy, HE , would never ever be signed bye our Club, unless we need a Dogger.
    In serious mode now, I think SAF* While not on the field played a great stroke, did he manage that ref? lol of course he did. Nemaja needed to walk. and fucking Majik at it to.
    I wont go off Topic. And fer any Lads, who feel’s Antonio did not feel he the real deal is growing into the role at United. MOM. All the boys were superb and as fer wee Rafael, we got a diamond in the making. Fuckin great.I think and I am conviced of this we are or the edge of something fucking great.
    Villa are a Good strong team, we were just better in possession, and have better Player’s not all over the park, lol jesting he had a fucking gr8 game J sung. And hats off too you 3 lungs park, Star
    I would be wotching that bone face Milner, he looks like he could crack it at our club, he ooozes class.

    The point of this thread I guess is to pay credit To Michael, swept away like only you can do, pure Owen. I just shouted like crazy at Wembley, fuck you puddle madrid and Toon. He is ours. And guess what he will win Medal’s.
    4 in a row BELIEVE On On

  36. Ben utd says:

    owen has always bin a lethal striker..its jst dat,he’s bin havin injury issues.bt other than dat,he’s jst priceless..I op he gets well soon 4 d run in.

  37. manchuchu says:

    Villa got Michael pwn’d.

  38. Ryan says:

    hi, big fan of this site and of United.

    @gudjohnsen,

    Yeah, same feeling I get when Owen scores. Something about his grassroots level ability of sidefooting into the net. So simple yet so brilliant. Also appreciate his ability to time his runs in and around the box. You can see he always seems to be aware of where the last defender is.

    Anyways, so stoked with the Carling Cup win! Go UNITED

  39. jonathan OGBE says:

    hello mancunians……………. CONGRATS for the carling win………. yet it inspires more trophies, coz we are united and that is what we are for.
    as for MICHAEL OWEN……… i am so happy for the lad for taking the responsibility of scoring in the final vs villa in place of red hot ROONEY. i admire his finishing… it is typical of him…. remember his finishes against MAN CITY (H), WESTHAM (H) AND VILLA (CARLING CUP). despite his lack of first team…. he has scored equal to berba. this shows how precise he is infront of goal. had he got many more starts and appearances, i am sure.. by now he would have been on level term with ROONEY , who looks unstopable.
    once more ..OWEN…….. we need u in our final third of the competition. we need everybody to raise their games…….. like fletcher , valencia and rooney. plus evra. we have seen the true and typical BERBA in our recent games….. he is becoming combative and influential. all our goals have been thanks to him…… and his skills…….
    UNITED FOR EVE
    ……….
    MAY THE GLORY LIVES LONG

  40. willierednut says:

    Took his goal well, shame about the injury i would blame the pitch for that.

  41. Giles Oakley says:

    Well put Gudjohnsen & King Eric. It’s always an added pleasure when Owen and Berba score, somewhat surprising to me in Owen’s case. He gave a little masterclass in scoring on Sunday with his low crouching posture as he hit the ball, clipping it as it came to him from his right and was almost passing him, with the left-hand side of his right foot (if you see what I mean!) It’s a very difficult skill as we’ve seen when others just balloon it any old where. Owen skimmed it into the far corner with faultless timing and minimal backlift. It’s great to see such a top player stressing how much he’s enjoying life at United. I was also pleased to see Berba looking so happy at the end, which looked like a moment of liberation at last for him. I think he finally feels he’s one of the boys, a winner in his own right, not just someone who’s luckily joined a successful team who have done it all.

  42. King Eric says:

    Giles Oakley – Hello mate, hope you are ok. Spot on as usual. I also noticed Berba at the end. He was chuffed to bits and I thought EXACTLY the same as you. It looks like he had finally accepted he is one of the lads and not just “piggy backing” onto their success. Also spot on about Michael’s finish. Makes it look so easy.

  43. Giles Oakley says:

    Hi King Eric, I’m OK thanks, after a bit of a rough patch. Winning the Cup certainly improved things!

    Next I want to see Antonio Valencia looking really happy. He’s been terrific this season, but it’s like he too isn’t yet fully confident of his right to be there. For any newcomer it must be pretty daunting to sit in the dressing room and see players like Giggsy, Scholesy, Neville, or even Rio or Carrick who ‘only’ have 3 or 4 Premeiership titles under the belt. It would take extraordinary self-belief to think you’re at the same level. That’s why it’s been so vital in the last few years that ‘the old guard’ don’t spend their time belittling the newcomers or youths coming through, but take time to school them in the right way, the United way. You can see how it’s rubbing off on relative newcomers like Carrick who has really got the message now, judging by his recent interviews. It was a joy to see him running midfield on Sunday. Capello, take notice.

  44. Fred says:

    Top Red. United legend. NFT.

  45. alpha_rs says:

    I’d be happy paying him £30,000 per week with him warming the bench knowing that every rat muncher is absolutely livid that he signed for the Manchester United. Anything to annoy rivals!
    I won’t forget when he scored his first United goal in the Premiership against Wigan. He run up to the United fans and I can only imagine how the rat munchers were feeling. Then he refused the interview saying they been slating him for all this time and now just because he has scored they want his time. Top bloke! Hehehe.
