PFA Nomination Shortlist is Funny and Brilliant

You couldn’t make this shit up!

Player’s Player of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo
Edwin van der Sar
Nemanja Vidic
Rio Ferdinand
Ryan Giggs
Steven Gerrard

I’d have Vidic for this one. You?

Young Player of the Year

Aaron Lennon
Ashley Young
Gabriel Agbonlahor
Jonny Evans
Rafael Da Silva
Stephen Ireland

It pains me to say it, but Ireland surely has to get this one. You?

  1. Macheda is GOD says:

I’m a bit confused on Rio honestly..otherwise Everything is perfect…except for stevy Gay

  2. SRAB says:

haha! Sub Gerrard for Carrick and it’s perfect! And why aren’t Macheda, Welbeck, Gibson and Eckersley in the young players one? There’s a conspiracy against our players.

  3. costas says:

Macheda didn’t even make the splash when the nominations were finalised.Next year he will be there.Guys i am afreaid they will give it to Stevie Me.I am also confused about Rio.Last year would have been more appropriate.

  4. Drabik says:

I have a feeling that Stephen Ireland will win the young player of the year award, deserves it too (where would city be without him this season i wonder?)

As for the PFA award, I thought Vidic or VDS were competing for it, until the recent drop in performances. I dont think Ronnie will get it, or Rio. I hope that giggsy gets it!!

  5. NewtonHeath says:

Is Fletch banned for the Porto game?

  6. Stephen says:

EVDS player of the year, interesting.

  7. Scott the Red says:

Stephen – he did claim more clean sheets this season than anyone in the entire history of English football. That’s probably worthy of a nomination!

  8. ellioman says:

    @NewtonHeath
No, he should be available and probably will play since he was rested this weekend. Why do you think he’s banned?

  9. NewtonHeath says:

    @ellioman

He doesnt seem to be in the squad listed on BBC or Red news.
Cant remember him being banned but cant imagine he would be dropped and havent heard he’s injured
I reckon we really need him to give the defense some protection tomorrow night!!

  10. NewtonHeath says:

    really hope it’s a misprint

  11. Stephen says:

Scott I agree but the defence probably had more to say in that than him.

  12. gotta hate tiny tears says:

another year for Rooney to be overlooked i see scott
    whats the reason behind that

  13. gotta hate tiny tears says:

evens all the way for the young player

who would of taught a kid could force his way into the first team mix with rio and vidic

  14. ellioman says:

    @NewtonHeath
    Yes, let’s hope so :S
If I recall correctly, I think Rooney was the only United player with a yellow card (arrrggg… another silly decision by the ref!) and in danger of missing a game.

On Manutd.com and BBC they say the squad is:
Van der Sar, Foster, Kuszczak; Neville, Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic, Rafael, Fabio, O’Shea, J. Evans; Ronaldo, Anderson, Scholes, Gibson, Carrick, Park, Nani, Giggs; Rooney, Tevez, Berbatov, Macheda.

    That’s 23. Isn’t that the maximum allowed? eeek….

  15. gingerprince says:

Happy to see Sir Ryan Giggs there….they will give it to StevieMe I’m sure about that.

  16. costas says:

I agree with tiny tears. What does Rooney have to do to get into the list? For me he had a better season than Ronaldo. For me though.

  17. costas says:

Guys there is no way Fletch is banned. He only had one yellow in this campaign.SAF press conference should clarify. He wasn’t in the squad against Sunderland.I hope it’s not one of those cases were we lose a player and we find it out when we line up for the next game.

  18. marvsharpe says:

I agree on Ireland for the Young Player of the Year.

Giggs is my favourite player of all time, so i’d give it to him.

And yes, Rooney deserves to be ahead of Ronaldo, as do a lot of Premiership players to be fair!!!!

  19. costas says:

Rafa and Evans didn’t play as much as the others have. For me it’s either Ashley Young(who i rate higherr that Agbonlahor) or Ireland.

  20. Jake says:

Can’t believe both lists…at what point should Ronaldo be on there instead of Ashley Young? Is it because Villa have had a recent downturn in form?…he’s been the best winger in the premiership but Ronaldo still gets on because he’s scored 15 goals and Young ends up on the young players list with Agbonlahor etc…what a joke…and Gerrard should get it…maybe Vidic…PFA thick twat Gordon Taylor came out and said Rio’s partnership with Vidic was the bedrock of our record defensive run…don’t remember rio playing in too many of those games?… the whole things pointless, if there was ever a season where a team didn’t stand out and deserve to have 5 out of 6 shortlisted it was this one, they should have put a bit more effort in and looked for players who have performed consistently, regardless of their team’s league position or form…we should have had Vidic, maybe Giggs (he hasn’t really played enough games though) out of the six, then Gerrard, Young, Lampard maybe, and I’m struggling for a 6th but a keeper at a club like United should never be on there…Van der Sar had 22 saves to make in those 11 games…says it all really…what a mockery, it’s like the UEFA awards last year, cheapens the whole thing…next thing you know Chris Hoy will have a knighthood…oh wait

  21. ellioman says:

    @costas
Hasn’t Evans played the majority of United games this season?
    Just wondering….

  22. Chris20LEGEND says:

Recon it will be VDS or Ryan and Steven Ireland will get young player of the year, shame he wont put back on the green jersey :(

  23. Androo says:

    GIGGS!!

He deserves it. Evans for the Young PFA award.

  24. MhdBzew says:

    voting rules…?!!

  25. King Eric says:

Jake – I don’t think Young has had a particularly good second half of the season to be honest.

Vidic for player and Ireland for Young Player.

Can anybody clear up this Fletch issue please. A bit worrying. Actually I never thought I would see the day where United fans were concerned about Fletch NOT playing. Our most consistent midfielder this season in my opinion.

  26. el-insaciable says:

    Now wait a minute.

Aren’t we supposed to be a one-man team?

  27. costas says:

ellioman Jonny has started 24 games in our 54 game season. But that’s not what i am talking about. Jonny has been an alternative whenever Rio or Vida aren’t fit. But he hasn’t carried his team on his back throughout the season like Young,Agbonlahor and Ireland have. That’s what i am saying.

  28. wazza says:

spot on King Eric.SAF will let us know if he got injured or else its a mistake of leaving his name out

  29. NewtonHeath says:

    Re:fletch missing
Unless all the sources work of one master source that has accidentally left him out – then he must be injured – there’s no way Gibson would be in the squad ahead of him
If so, please god fergie doesn’t go 4-4-2 with Scholes one of the centre two!!

i think we’ve gotta go 4-3-3 to protect the defence.
We played 4-3-3 in all the big games last season and it worked a treat.
This year we’ve gone back to 4-4-2 in most of the big games and have come a real cropper in most of them.

  30. 7seagulls says:

i dont understand why ronny’s on there, surely rooney deserves it more? i have a sinking feeling stevie me will win player of the year and steven ireland the young player. would be bloody typical!

  31. costas says:

This secrecy for Fletcher is very annoying. And over the last 2 days i have been going on and on about starting for the first time in a while with VDS,Rio,Vida,CArrick and Fletch.Should have put my foot in my mouth.

  32. rc7 says:

I thought we were supposed to be rubbish?
What, no mention of Kuyt, Reina, Mascherano, Riera and, of course, Nando.
Unfortunately the thieving, violent thug will win it.

  33. davetian says:

Gotta be Vidic and Ireland for me.

  34. Jonny says:

How on earth can Giggs, Ferdinand and Van der Sar all get a nomination? What a joke. Why isn’t Marrouane Fellaini on the Young Player’s shortlist? Riera’s been decent, Collison for West Ham, Clichy’s had another good season and Torres as well.

  35. Drabik says:

Jonny, no opposition player would vote for Fellaini, as he’s probably fouled just about everyone this season. He has the most yellow cards and the most fouls this season.

I like him though, just wish he would stop elbowing players in the face/throat/chest

  36. costas says:

Jonny i ask because i don’t know about this.Do the nominees have to be elected as Barclaycard Players of the month? I know this season that Ronaldo,Gerrard,VDS and Giggs have been elected as such but i can’t remember this about Rio.If that’s their reasoning,it’s dumb.Torres not being there was a bit strange.

  37. corea says:

    Mates, don’t worry that much.
Let them take this awards, the most important thing is THE TEAM.

Fletch situation is really worrying. I don’t think Ando will be the better alternative. (

  38. Par says:

This is what happens when you get a bunch of functionally-retarded 30-year-olds reading at primary 3 level and ask them to predict the future.

I’ll give you Rio and Vidic, but the likes of RVP, Alonso, Hangeland (and maybe even Lampard or Torres, depending on how the remaining games go) deserve to be nominated.

  39. Marq says:

Remember the Treble season? Someone by the name of Ginola took the award because too many of our players were on the list!
Anyway, If Liverpool do not win anything this season, Gerrard will not get it, so it is up to us if he stands a chance, I’d say 101% of the people here will say no, so please do us proud United!

  40. corea says:

If Vida didn’t make that awful mistake in the game against scousers and we would’ve won the title he would’ve been the clear favorite.
But this is the stupid nature of this awards. People see the defender’s mistakes, but for the players lige Gerrard there is always another chance.

  41. costas says:

At the Premier League website where visitors vote,Gerrard is way ahead. It’s what you said Marq: Too many United players.

  42. Don Pablo says:

Its gon’ be Gerrard or Vidic for the PFA.. Young player is obviously Ireland though Rafael would have stayed fit. On a side note, anyone else think Fabio would have been a shoo in had he been played/stayed fit?

  43. micheal says:

isnt it funny that useless joke of a player berbetov is not on the list, I will say it again how he became a united player is beyond a joke. he should be playing for a pub side or better manchester city.

  44. burynred says:

I have absolutly no idea how Ronaldo has got on this list ahead of players that have carried their team through bad spells, such as Lampard and Cahill. Can you honestly say that, despite his goals, Ronaldo has driven us on to win games? For me it has to be Stevie Me, if it wasn’t for him, they would be battling Arsenal for 4th, if it wasn’t for our recent wobble in defensive form, it would have been Vida

  45. Sash Sylvarre says:

Hope the votes don’t split too much among our players resulting in ABUs giving the award to Stevie Me.

  46. Giles Oakley says:

Ireland’s a great player but he’s not played under pressure in the way Jonny Evans has. Evans has never buckled, despite playing in constantly changing line-ups in 4 different competitions. He’s shown maturity way beyond his years, and there have been fewer errors even in the blip than far more illustrious players. Plus he’s been mighty for N. Ireland, whereas Ireland has been away with his granny for Ireland.

  47. gotta hate tiny tears says:

ireland has done fantastic this season

but evens has played around the world and won the world this year
also won a league cup this year
forced his way into a vidic rio first team
    is top of the league
    played champions league football
and should win the young player

  48. rohail says:

whoeva voted 4 da scouse scum – u r not a united fan

  49. rohail says:

    giggs and rafael to win!!!!

  50. NewtonHeath says:

Personally I think Player of the Year should be Steve Gerrard.
And regardless of my love for United and hatred of the Scousers – he would really deserve it!!
I fuckin hate him, but he has been brilliant this season and whilst Torres was out he almost single handedly kept the scousers in the title race.
When you look at United there have been quite a few players who have had decent seasons. (But i dont think you could say 1 stands out) On top of the 5 nominated Carrick and Rooney have been really good – but when one player carries a team like Gerrard has- then you would have to say he deserves to be player of the year….
Besides … fuck it…he’s welcome to it… the most important thing is winning the league and champions league. Fingers crossed he pulls his groin tonight and chelsea win tonight and arsenal beat them next week…

  51. redmojo says:

    Vidic

Ireland/Rafeal (If he hadn’t missed the end of the season, hopefully next year he’ll stay fit.)

  52. NicoQB says:

Rooney has been by far our best offensive player this season and barely noone mentions his absence on this list. Also Torres should have figured.

In all objectivity and though it pains me to say it Gerrard deserves to win it.

  53. Stephen says:

Vidic deserves it and if he doesn’t get it simply because he had one poor game then it is a disgrace, but Gerrard will win it, Benitez will will pop idol and Carragher will win Hells Kitchen, as the Liverpool media emphasis is currently.

  54. NicoQB says:

michael – stick to the topic would you? Even in a topic dealing with other things people find ways to slate berbatov. Next why don’t you profess your indignation for the absence of tevez off the list ?

  55. wazza says:

    http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid={F9E570E6-407E-44BC-800F-4A3110258114}&newsid=6630700

  56. spencer says:

shut the fuck up jake, u sound like a dipper

  57. wazza says:

with Fletch injured, i would not mind if Sheasy is played as dmf and Evans at RB

  58. mancaroon says:

Guys, I might be wrong and correct me if I am, but players aren’t allowed to vote for players from thier own team and all eligible players have to vote….which means stevieme is automatically a fair few votes ahead…..as marq, thats why Ginola won in 99. Fuck it, do you think the players will care when that cunt wins the award and all our lads have to show for it will be the carling cup, world club championship, premier league, fa cup and european cup. fuckin shit eh?

  59. costas says:

Fuck it.Fletch has suffered a hamstring injury. That happened against Porto in the first leg.Why did we find out one week later? There goes my theory about the two defensive zones lining up tomorrow.Anderson or Scholes?

  60. Gman says:

where are Terry and Lampard? hahaha you gotta love this shit.. I sure hope Vidic or Giggsy will take it

  61. King Eric says:

Hmm not sure Costas. I don’t like the pairing of Carrick and Scholes as they always seem to struggle when they play in centre together. Bearing in mind Scholesy played full game at Sunderland he may well go with Anderson. If so its time for the lad to step up to the plate and regain some of last seasons form. As Wazza mentioned I would not put it past Sir Alex to play with Sheasy in central midfield but I doubt it. He has actually had some very good games last few seasons in this position but considering he has played most of our games, a role in the “engine room” may prove a bit much.

    For Information:

The players vote for their player of the season in January. The period is a calendar year from Jan 08 to Jan 09 as opposed to a season. With this in mind after last years triumphs it could well be a United player and not Saint Stevie.

Talking of Stevie Me he is to play no part tonight, not even on bench. Bad news in a way as was hoping he may really bugger up his groin but the cunt is gonna be fit now for the run in. After tonight they have a full week to recover before Arsenal visit. In comparison Arsenal will only have had a couple of days rest. Its a joke.

  62. RedDevil007 says:

Agbonlahor might get the Young Player award, but I think it’s almost certainly Ireland. Honestly, he deserves it too, some of those goal scoring late runs he makes are great.

  63. costas says:

It’s a joke King and i have been tired of saying it.The FSW was talking about Stevie Me making the difference in order to confuse everyone.I still believe that they took the game with Chelsea lightly. They want to get knocked out and focus on the league. It’s not as if they were going to get past Barca so why play 2 extra games in the title run in.Oh and Arsenal have a lot of injuries. That’s why i am saying:A draw next Tuesday and i will be a happy man.

  64. Drabik says:

It would be good for giggs to win, especially as he is soon to be the first player to play 800 times for manchester united. He is currently on 797. Also, whilst mentioning milestones, scholesy is currently on 597, and will become only the forth player to play for united over 600 times.

Would be awesome for them both to make the milestone on the same day, against Pompey possibly?

  65. alpha_rs says:

I do not believe what I am seeing.

Chelsea are giving away this game.

    2-0 after 28 minutes!

  66. corea says:

i told you that. 0-2 to scousers.

  67. suhayl says:

never write of those dippers…i fuckin knew it way before this game…..that cockraoches and vermin are virtually impossible to kill….esp in this comp where they survive floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, meteor strikes or whatever. They always carry that luck and charm in this competition.

FUCK SAKE JUST KNEW IT……JUST KNEW IT. IF THEY GET THROUGH WE SEEMS SO LIKELY NOW…..THATS IT…THEY’LL BE ON CLOUD CUCKOO LAND FOREVER AND EVER. AND THEY’LL BE LIFTED NO END IN THE PREMIERSHIP RACE….

FUCK FUCK FUCK DIPPERS…WHY DONT THEY JUST DIE

  68. suhayl says:

  129. doncobaino says:

lads what I want is a bit of a fight, we went through so much to earn the title of european champions and I hope they do what they can to go through…fight! FIGHT!!!

  130. Doherty says:

Yeah i know. Hes a complete tit but u have to watch him, just to get a laugh

  131. Drew Vader says:

I know we aren’t whiter than white in this respect, but seriously, have you ever seen so much diving and simulating?? Every time there was contact a player hit the floor…. Pathetic

  132. Nicky says:

    Go Barca!! Beat the Rentboyz!

  133. Drew Vader says:

And Arsenal are playing really well these days…I think they are more than capable of going to anfield and getting a win, if not a draw. Put Agent Silvestre on la nina and let him go to work!!

  134. micheal says:

a new song for berbetov, o o o dimitar berbatov o o o can he get any poorer
    NicoQB
I brought this up because ronaldo has been slated but he is our top scorer and some how he is on the list the useless berbetov is not, lets look at berbetov 10 reasons why berbetov is average, 1 he cost us 30 million pounds, 2 he is one of the worst strikers and pointless strikers to ever play at united, 3 he does not score goals enough, 4 he is never up front, 5 he has no hunger to bust a gut to get in the box, 6 he has made our attack worse with his slow style made united toothless, 7 he is slow and quiet lazy, 8 he is not even in the top 20 of the best players in the world, 9 he has not offered anything new to our attack, 10 he is never a 90 minute player or a 50 game player.

  135. Giles Oakley says:

What were all those stats about how the dippers were the best team in Europe over the last 5 years? Just a dream, baby, just a dream. Now go back to sleep.

  136. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    for micheal
    and everyone else

berbatov(my view) gives man united another option

    a fantastic option

    he is a fantastic buy
    and world class

and thats that a fair as my view goes

  137. vidic will get ya15 says:

big game for dippers now, long time time to reflect, arsenal will be up for it big time. even if they beat arsenal i feel alot of focus will be on that game then hull away could be there undoing

  138. micheal says:

    gotta hate tiny tears
your right he gives united an option, making our attack worse thats the option.

  139. gotta hate tiny tears says:

    a defencive option

  140. gotta hate tiny tears says:

I am happy as anyone that the dippers where knocked out
but plaese remember 58 and think what liverpool football club familys and fans will go true today, with respect

tonybee ,you must write for the sun

please anyone else i am happy as anyone that the dippers where knocked out
but plaese remember 58 and think what liverpool football club familys and fans will go true today, with respect

you gotta learn what happened on that day. it was a loss of liverpool fans due to the negiect of mostly the security. it had nothing to do with the liverpool fans. it was poorly run which was the way every match was run back then ,it was a tragidy that was going to happen someday and sadly people had to loose there lives for something to be done about it. its a sad day for english football that every fan of the game must pay respect to. the liverpool fans themself thou dont do themself many favours by talkin and joking about 1958 ,singing disrespectful songs and airplane wings with there arms.

thats why thoses pool fans dont deserve respect, but the familys of those who’s lives where lost ,like the familys of munich, need to be respectfully remembered

  141. Marq says:

Fantastic! Put the dipperes on a high only to smack them down to bits, well done Chelsea. Hopefully that’ll do their confidence some damage.

Ok, now back to our own business… Do us proud United!

One more thing. micheal, get lost

  142. Marq says:

Critisizing players is alright, but trying to make a song out of it is downright crazy. You’re better off a dipper

  143. costas says:

Just came back from a Liverpool fan’s house. He was proud of his team’s effort(as well as he should).Too bad that Liverpool fans never acknowledge what errors their manager has done.He left Gerrard out,he brought Torres off when there was still a game on and he prefers Skrtel over Agger. But i will agree entirely with whan Dumphy said.It was like watching 2 drunks fighting. All it takes is to leave Terry and Gerrard out and these two resort to water polo.I like high scoring games but not when the goals come from defensive errors, deflections or whatever.

  144. micheal says:

    Marq
berbetov is a disgrace to the shirt he is a total joke.

  145. Marq says:

Yea right, being tops in assist is a disgrace

  146. Utd sumwhere says:

Am afraid of all the nominations cos i smell conspiracy against us.We are the team with more than one nominee, and as it stands, our votes will be divided cos all of them was outstanding.

  147. wazza says:

is torres the britney spears ? lol

  148. cantona7 says:

The list is a shit. I wonder how they did they manage to come out with that list.. I wont give it a damn, ever since Giggs lost it to Ginola.

Let’s just concentrate on Porto for now. My mind is fully in it now.

  149. soonaiko says:

Correct me if I’m wrong. Aren’t the nominated players accessed from the second half of season 2007/08 to the first half of season 2008/09? MU players certainly deserve the nominations based on their good performances, the major trophies and individual awards won during the period accessed.
Foster, Welback, Macheda, Gibson, etc. should continue their good work and I won’t be surprised if they got nominated in the near future.
Fans should be proud of the nominations and respect the process in which the players are nominated. Do not belittle such nominations/awards or any competition that MU/players participate in as you’re only belittling your own team/players and their great achievements/hard work.

  150. Neil C says:

Cant believe rafael da silva has a nomination. He shouldnt be allowed because of his lack of games. 11 games in the premiership, and most of them weren’t a full 90 mins. He’s played 21 games overall and 5 of those were in the league cup when fergie played all the youngsters anyway. Rafael DEFINITELY should not win this (and shouldnt even be nominated). 21 games out of what will be nearly a 70 game season – that’s not even one third of utd’s games. He doesnt deserve to be there, injured or not.

  151. micheal says:

    Marq
open up your eyes and just realise berbetov is another flop and is one of the worst players to ever play for man utd he just abysmel. if he was here last year instead of tevez we would not have won the double or ronaldo would have not got 42 goals last year.
