In last night’s 0-0 draw between England and Slovenia, Jesse Lingard lost the plot and was booked for his role in an altercation with opposition defender Aljaz Struna.

After the game, Gareth Southgate revealed the reason why Lingard was so angry is because Struna had raised his hands to Lingard.

I’m told he reacted to someone raising their hands at Marcus. That’s something he’s got to cut out. There’s a danger you get a red card in this sort of game when there’s inconsistency in a lot of the decisions. There’s even more of a risk.

Lingard confirmed this earlier today on Twitter, posting a picture of Struna with his fist under Rashford’s chin.

This of course isn’t the first time Lingard has jumped in on Rashford’s behalf. When we beat Manchester City at the Etihad last season, Martin Demichelis fouled Rashford in the area after he was beaten for pace, before Rashford scored the winning goal. A penalty should have been awarded but Demichelis squared up to Rashford, claiming our striker had dived. Lingard was the first player to jump in in and defend his mate.

The pair were both fairly happy at full-time though.
