PICTURES: It Was Green and Gold Last Time Too

green gold villa

Manchester United would have won the domestic Treble in 1994 if not for Aston Villa beating 3-1 in the League Cup final, with Mark Hughes scoring our only goal.

Interestingly, United wore the green and gold strip during that final, which is a colour that will be reflected in the crowd this Sunday.

I wasn’t following United at the time and I never understood why Les Sealey started that game.

Villa have had our number in the last 3 League Cup meetings, but we have the gotten the best of them in FA cup meetings.

  2. james f says:

Lee Sharpe was a great player! He’ll always be fondly remembered, especially for his fantastic goals and his even more fantastic celebrations.

  3. mufcdevils says:

hopefully the players will thrive under the green and gold stuff and emerge as victors on sunday

  4. Staffred says:

Hope this is not an omen,we can’t lose this final!!!!

  5. vidic will get ya 15 says:

@costas. peter schmeichel got sent off against charlton in the 5th round of the FA cup if i remember correctly, and was subsequently banned.

  6. Nick Mifsud says:

I was at that game – still have the green and gold scarf that my uncle bought for me outside wembley.
I remember being really excited about seeing King Eric play live for the first time…
Of course, it wasn’t the greatest performance by us – iirc we only lost 4 games in that entire season – and I saw two of them live!
(Yes feel free to blame me – I did)

  7. vidic will get ya 15 says:

also seem to remember cantona missing to final due to sendings off at swindon and arsenal and got 5 game ban. came back to score a brace against city :)

  8. aig alex is god says:

  9. smithy99 says:

What a great shirt that was! Still got it now. Its got KEANE 16 on the back.

  10. Nick Mifsud says:

Have to correct you there vida15 i’m afraid.
Eric was on the pitch – but was marked out of the game alas.
Looking at the line-up again you can see why Fergie used to refer to this team (barring Mr. Sealey) as the best of his time.
God for a midfield of Keane and Ince against Barca last season!

  11. kidmeister says:

It’ll be green and gold in the crowd instead!
Hopefully the glazers aren’t there, seems they’re scared of us now!!

  12. Jandsdad says:

that was a great kit back in the day.

  13. Carlow Redz says:

@smithy99 – jees, me also, KEANE 16 – great days – looking forward to Sunday – two teams going for it, neither wanting extra time/pens etc.

  14. GoatinaUnitedShirt says:

  18. Jandsdad says:

  20. willierednut says:

  22. vidic will get ya 15 says:

    @ Nick Mifsud,
i stand corrected, am i right in thinking kanchelskis was sent off for handball?? i remember the 3 of the 4 games chelsea home and away the other eludes me.
on bridge situation, its hard to imagine why his missus would shag about apart from the fact he looks like spence out of hollyoakes

  23. themufc1999 says:

    @ Jandsdad
“cuntishness of the highest order”. You hit the nail on the head there mate.

  24. King Eric says:

Costas – Hello mate. Sealey was a good keeper. RIP

  25. kaihnsn says:

Ah i remember well this kit. remember so well because i think this kit a little bit peculiar at that time. of course i know nothing about the history behind the green and gold then. the best thing in early premier league era then because malaysia just introduce satelite tv service. so i can watch united play every other week.

before the satelite tv i just follow united through news in the paper on monday morning. i hope united can beat villa this sunday. with one trophy in hand the players will be more motivated to retain the league and capture CL again. come on united!!

  26. Costas says:

    @King Eric

Hey mate. I know. God rest his soul. I just found it a bit weird because he wasn’t in contention at the time. I think Gary Walsh was number 2 at the time.

  27. brett1985 says:

That was a real shame what happened to Les Sealey. Hope we make amends for that cup final this time. It was a big disappointment at the time.

  28. Fze123 says:

I love this kit. I fantasized seeing our players coming out in this strip tomorow; it compliments the fact that the Glazers may be present at Wembley for the final. Lets hope tomorow’s game is not a repeat of their league cup win in 1994. Come on Utd!

  29. Fred says:

That final was a sickener. Remember rival fans taunting us with “where’s your Treble gone?”

    RIP Les Sealey

  30. pawaka21 says:

what if it wasnt kancheslkis who is on the line that day???maybe it could make a difference…sigh..

  31. Hurdy Gurdy Man says:

    I loved that jersey

  32. smithy99 says:

    The team that day was:

Sealey, Parker, Irwin, Bruce, Kanchelskis, Pallister, Cantona, Ince, Keane, Hughes, Giggs. Subs: McClair, Sharpe.

What a great side that was, no one could walk over those boys. Great physical and mental strength.

Sealey – Great keeper. RIP Les.

  33. torontored says:

To the above comment _ “did u see dat look bridge gave tiny tearz? wow i xpected terry 2 break down in tears lol”

Personally I was waiting for TT to slip on his fat fucking arse – and then put that shirt on his wall so he won’t forget.

By Christ I am now praying the rentboys fold – Arse fold and we nail another treble.

SAF the Gods maybe with you – be nice to Jean – if Rio and Vidic are fit we may just do it.
