Player Response To Munich Defeat

Darren Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park give their thoughts on last night’s defeat against Bayern Munich.

Darren Fletcher

“It’s not insurmountable. Although we’re disappointed to have lost two late goals, 2-1 isn’t the worst result in the world. We now know what we have to do at home. We certainly respected Bayern before this match and we’ve still got great respect for them. They’re a very good side. You don’t play any bad sides in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. We’ve learned a lot about Bayern and about ourselves tonight and we’ll take all that into the match at Old Trafford next Wednesday.”

Park Ji-Sung

“We’re disappointed because we were leading but ended up losing. The early goal was good for us but we weren’t able to build on it and get the result here. But we have our chance to go through at Old Trafford. We did well defensively, but we conceded a goal from a free-kick, and then for the second there was a bit of miscommunication. That was a mistake, but we can overcome that and get through at Old Trafford.”

Good to see the players aren’t beating themselves over the loss.

We need to get this setback out of the way and focus on the Chelski match.

    COME ON UNITED

i stil blv in my team to go thru even witout wazza..We were nt in our A GAME last nyt for reasons i cant decipher..Bt we stil have a chance to make amends..I BELIEVE.

  3. Macedonia_United says:

if we beat Chelsea , with or without Roo , we will crush Bayern at home

    We Believe

  5. The Redmod says:

I don’t think the lads can play as badly at Old Trafford.Bayern are a determined side and they proved that last night, but it’s not impossible for us to score two goals and keep a clean sheet. We just need to make sure we get behind them next Wednesday “sing your hearts out” ..if we do that we’ll be fine.

  6. stretfordender says:

Forget it for now boys, concentrate on the weekend. We know SAF Will have them focused on that from last night… We have a chance next week to sort this blip out, All eyes on Chelsea. I’m still saying Rooney will be fine!

  7. Macedonia_United says:

i forgot , Fiorentina scored 3 against Bayern at home :) Bring on Cheslscum

  8. huzi says:

i dont understand why every1 is killing themselves over the result. i actually predicted 2-1 to bayern on another post. the performance was crap,no doubt, but the result? id have taken it. (except of course rooneys injury) . anyone remember the last time we lost 2-1 in the quarters of the champions league? WE WENT ON TO WIN 7-1 AT HOME, so guys take a breather and calm down

  9. 18andCounting says:

Brilliant attitude from park and fletch..accepting that there were some mistakes which resulted in them conceding goals..obviously they will iron out all the differences in 8 days time..fletch also makes another briiliant point that they now are fully aware about the kind of game the germans play and rest assured our lads will be ready for them at OT!!!

but firstly we need to concentrate on the rentboys and kill of the challenge to the title so that we can fully focus on CL.

BTW any news about wazza?? hopefully good.

  10. Jeet says:

Yeah – lets have some perspective, please. We got 1-2 away….we can jolly well do a 2-0 at home. Just worried about the Roo…COME ON!!!

  11. BabyFaceAssassin says:

I think the Chelsea result now will pretty much shape up how our season goes on from here….if we can beat Chelsea without rooney, then I think it will just drive us on to beat bayern at OT and win till the end of the season. Although I think Fergie may even take a draw at this point of time against Chelsea. Let’s hope the likes of Berba will shine in Ronney’s absense like he did against Bolton.

  12. Costas says:

Last night these two weren’t as good as in previous games, but I cant have any complaints about the. They are among our best performers in big games.

    Time to beat Chelsea now.

  13. eddiemunro says:

It seems like a bad result cos we scored so early. We always make things hard for ourselves, look at last season, almost messed up the second leg against Inter, and the first leg against Porto. I have total confidence that these players know how to win against anybody over two legged ties.

Well done to Bayern they played well, sets it up for a great game next Wednesday, isn’t that what it’s all about?

This is Berbatov’s chance to show his class.

  14. Walk in the Park says:

just want to say….i hate chelsea !!

  15. sinred says:

I think the OTT reaction is down to Rooney’s injury. Otherwise 1-2 is a decent result, could have been worse.

Most definitely Roo won’t play the this weekend and against Bayern. Hopefully he will be back atleast by the City game.

  16. Doghouse says:

I think the Milan result, at least the final score, makes this result look worse than it was. We burned Milan, utterly thrashed them, at home, but in Milan we might easily have been badly beaten and we rode our luck hard. Our luck, in Germany, ran out. Well most of it. Daresay I’m not the only one who thinks but for VDS we could be out of this thing by now.

Had a shocking game, but we’re not out of it and we got the away goal. That, given the performance, is almost an escape.

End of the day what do we have a right to expect going to Bayern in the Champions League? Even playing well I mean did anybody really think we’d hammer them? I mean sure I expected us to win or draw, but 2-1 is not exactly unexpected. It’s the sort of scoreline that any club hoping to win in Europe ought to feel confident about turning over at home.

This malarkey reminds me a bit of the feeling after the Roma massacre, going into the next game the lads were complacent and went out in the next round. Complacency this time has thankfully not cost us too dear, so let’s hope the lads can turn it around.

Mostly though I think if United had to have a hiccup on the run in then I’d rather it be in Europe anyway. Better to wobble at Bayern and bounce back on Chelsea than wobble against Chelsea and bounce back on Bayern in my opinion.

  17. Costas says:

Oh boy. We are officially in the twilight zone. The Sun backpage has the word PRAY as the headline. If he is going to miss the rest of the season for us, I hope he misses the World Cup too. And they call United a one man team. Surely, England have other world class strikers, no?

  18. RedDevilzAdvocate says:

I see the Germans are already confident of knocking us out next week, at least that headline is all the motivation the rest of the Lads will need. Get stuck in Lads!

  19. LucasUTD says:

guys, what’s with all this talk about the PL being more important than the CL? i mean, even if we don’t win it this year, we have a pretty good chance of overtaking liverpool’s record in the next few years. the CL however is a competition where we’ve chronically underachieved and winning it sends out a message like no other to the rest of the world, and personally would give me the most joy.

  20. Jeet says:

I think we can beat Chelsea without Rooney…if Berba, Valencia and Nani are on song, they will have a tough time against us. I am very, very worried about the central midfield though…God, what would we have given for Anderson to be available now! Can we please time warp Keano out of retirement? Please? Just this one time?

And lastly tip for SAF: Can we please get Sir Bobby or the family of Duncan Edwards to speak to the lads ahead of the return leg? Or someone from that era? I mean, Giles Sir – if only you could speak with Carrick before the game (sorry if it sounds silly, but I am serious – dont intend to disrespect anybody)…

  21. zain man red says:

its time for kiko`s magic, last season he definately won us the league,i want Berbatov to turn up at the weekend,my fellow reds worry not we will walk on the water if you believe.faith can move mountains lets be patient the players have vowed to overcome this tide.

Rumour has it that Rooney is out for 4-6 weeks!

  24. Jeet says:

@Costas: Ankle injuries are notorious as they tend to recur….I once had a hairline fracture on my left ankle, and till date its weak and tends to sprain very easily. Also though I wouldnt call him fat, Rooney does carry some weight, which compunds the problem.

Ok damn, the last one was supposed to be 10. My bad.

  27. Costas says:

    @Jeet

That could be true. Metatarsals is his biggest problem because it has happened to him 3 times I think. I didn’t know he had ankle problems so often, but I have my doubts about this list. I don’t remember Wayne being injured in February of 2007. Here’s a better list:

    http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/players/1499/wayne_rooney_injury.html?affid=97

    @romeo

    I hope they are false!

  28. romeo says:

    @costas
    So do I

  29. GTull says:

    4 – 6 weeks…Ouch…We can only hope that’s a rumour.

I’ve done my ankle countless times with varying degress of severity. If it’s a full sprain then yes, 4 – 6 weeks, but from the replays it didn’t look as though he fully turned it.

Don’t get me wrong, it hurts like hell and will swell up, but you can play through it, trouble is, they’ll be a weakness there for the games he plays in the short term so unless there’s a miracle, he won’t play Sat.

The media will of course, always hype it up, particularly with the World Cup coming up and the pictures of him leaving with a crutches and a foot brace only fuel the disaster culture we seem to love in this country.

Course, I could be wrong and we’re about to get the worst news we could get… :-P

    Finger’s crossed.

  30. King Eric says:

Lucas – Because it will be 4 on the trot mate.

  31. stretfordender says:

I said this morning and I will say it again, if it was a full twist like the media are enjoying writing about, he would not have got up, they wouldn’t have lifted them off around his arms, a stretcher would be used etc. I honestly think this will be two weeks tops. Wait for the swelling to go down this week, may even make the bench next wed. BUT I AM THE ULTIMATE UNITED OPTIMIST! We have done well before with injuries and we just need to do it again.
Come on Wazza, shake it off son :D !

  32. stretfordender says:

King Eric – got to agree, Lucas you’ve got it massively wrong, read the past articles on here, Rooney especially, it’s all about the PL. The Champions League is an honour and it’s great we do so well, but the premier league is more important. Period.

  33. xol says:

I think we set up to counter, hoping for an away goal, the reasoning being that Bayern’s strength is not their Strikers. We scored straight away and this helped take the pressure off.

At 1-0 there would have been no point in getting Neville forward against the pace of Ribery, so in general, I think the plan was a realistic one – stay back, let them come at us. Their central defenders were allowed to make runs straight through the middle, supporting their central midfield 2 (who were up against our 3). But this only levelled up numbers in midfield, when the ball got to our box, our defence was already there. If Ribery charged down the wing, Nani was with him and Neville was waiting. This is why Rakeface looked pissed off. Contrast this with the site of Rio trying to chase back as a ball comes over the top for Ribery to run onto. I think the tactics were ok for what was only the first half.

The fact that we looked slow and tired is a worry, but I’ve got a feeling they’re just pacing themselves like long distance runners. Whereas Bayern were celebrating like they’d won the double and getting yellow cards in the process.

  34. redscot says:

    Good Morning…..Lads.
Firstly I apoligise if I offended any one/poster last night, early morning.Like all of us we were all high for the game I thought a win was possible with the tide of excitement. In reality and thats a cunt to accept we were maybe fortunate to get out of there just 1/2.
I am not a poster that will start slagging of Individuals in the team.I just think we were desperately unlucky in key parts of the Match.Although throughout the match EVDS saved us repeatedly.
On reviewing the Match and its not trying to be a smart Arse, Saf made the wrong calls imo with his Substitutions.
The Lads never got into top gear we all know this and we cannot play so bad collectively when we come up against them next week. Its only half time and the Boys at OT will provide our 12th man.Normally away from home against one of the Giants of world football that result would be acceptable.I know because I feel it also, the Bastard of the evening which has tainted all our feelings was the injury to Wayne our talisman. But as Scott and his article on”we are not a one man team”.I believe the lads will galvanise themselves.
I am desperately sorry if I sound depressed(because I fuckin am).I am just going to lock myself in a dark room and avoid all the shite that will be in the media revelling at our loss and Waynes injury.
We are going to have to do this the hard way Lads.
Sorry no humour or nuttieness today.Away to find a fucking A doll to push pins into.
    Believe On On On

  35. GTull says:

    @redscot

Cheer up pal, we live to fight another day…

  36. willierednut says:

Suffice to say, wazza will miss the Chelsea game and the second leg against Bayern, i see the Berba debate on the horizion. The plus for me last night was the away goal, lets hope the lads make it count at OT.

  37. Rick says:

We will beat Bayern I’m sure, and we need to stop moaning about the Rooney crisis, there is too much expectation on the guy that eventually this injury was inevitable.

We have shown that we can cope without Rooney in some games especially last night when he was’nt at his best. We lost our shape when we took Park and Carrick off leaving a huge gap in the midfield. I should have been Rooney off for Berbatov and Nani off for Valencia.

  38. redarmy7 says:

i agree with many posters on here, the league comes 1st, we get to win a 4th consecutive title, never been done before and over take the dippers :) we have got to deal the rent boys a blow, gives a cushion, at the minimum a draw.
plus utd will have to adapt without rooney now, we cant depend on just one player, the problem will be in midfield, they looked tired/sluggish yesterday, so hopefully they have sorted that out by saturday, who could replace scholes in a game of the intensity alongside super fletch and carrick?

  39. Edge says:

Away goal is all that matters for fuck sake.

    Waiting for Rooney news

  40. rubito says:

Can we please be more optimistic on here? The replay shows he landed badly, toe first, and twisted his ankle. I don´t know about the rumours, they could be true but let´s hope not, but for me on picture evidence it´s a twisted ankle and that´´s 10 days. He misses Sunday and the return but, in principle, no more.
I just hope it´s nothing worse and that the picture on crutches and the ankle/foot brace were just precautions. Does anyone know when we will find out for sure? I can´t get into the official site to see what they have to say.

COME ON YOU MIGHTY REDS……………..UNITED UNITED UNITED

  41. willierednut says:

Edge – We’ll not know today mate, he’s having a scan tomorrow. The league over the European cup everytime.

  42. arijc says:

I think the Champions League is as important as the Premier League. At least Sir Alex thinks its the one competition in which United should have a much better record.

  43. rubito says:

Now about the game. I don´t know what everyone else feels but I think we definitely don´t need Ribery.
I would have no qualms about him joining Chelsea or Madrid. He didn´t impress me at all.
I think, as Scott said, we had one eye on Sundays game after getting that early goal and thats where we came unstuck last night. Nothing to do with SAF´s tactics in my opinion, of course.

COME ON YOU MIGHTY REDS………………UNITED UNITED UNITED

  44. theboogeyman says:

I’m worrying about Rooney more than anything.

  45. Sayyid says:

    slightly off topic

im going to Manchester this weekend but don’t have tickets for the game

do they show the match live anywhere around Old Trafford such as the Megastore or perhaps in the Trafford centre

please note, i don’t want to watch the match in a bar/pub

many thanks for your help guys

  46. ZGirl says:

    we lost. it’s done. over.

While we should analyse the reasons why things went wrong, beating ourselves up and thinking negatively won’t help the Red cause one bit!

Just have faith, and it will be repaid!
    GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED!

  47. willierednut says:

rubito – Agree on Ribery. Do you really think that was the reason for last nights performance? A dangerous thing to do when playing a team like Bayern.

  48. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

Rooney twisted his ankle and it swelled up he kept the weight off it with his crutches . The swelling has gone down and it just seems like a sprain. He more than likely will miss Saturdays game but will be availible For Wednesday . Depending on the swelling going fully down the full results should be clear

  49. Rick says:

And how long are United going to carry Carrick? Plus Neville did a good job on Ribery

  50. Costas says:

I don’t think we are going to have news about Rooney until very late today. The squad is still in Germany aren’t they? So Wayne will have the scan late in the afternoon one would assume.

Oh and PRAY. What a joke the Sun is.

  51. Costas says:

    @Rick

If Carrick was a waste of space, Fergie wouldn’t be carrying him for 4 years now. It’s a dip in form. Everyone gets them.

  52. huzi says:

HOLY FU**IN SHIT!! just read rooney could be out for upto three months, if its broken! shit!

  53. Sayyid says:

since Owen, Hargreaves, Anderson, O’Shea and Brown got injured we have been relying on 14 players

    our midfield needs freshness

giggs fletcher nani and valencia, berbatov and macheda need to start vs Chelsea

scholes, carrick, park all need a rest

obertan needs to be used as sub more often. the guy has pace to burn

  54. Jeet says:

@huzi : WHERE? can you share a link?

  55. Rick says:

    Costas

A dip in form for a whole season, too inconsistent. He does provide that calming influence in midfield to steady the ship but when we really need to win games he hides behind players on the half way line. Lacks movement off the ball and ALWAYS play the safe pass. Lastnight and Everton away was a prime example. At least David Batty could win a ball.

  56. huzi says:

    @jeet
im using from a phone so cant share links. . .but you go to newsnow, manchester united and its 1 of the 1st headlines

  57. Jeet says:

@Sayyid : Completely agreed…I would argue for using Obertan for the last 30 min or so, when Nani has already made them tired. Or start with Nani on the left, burn them with Valencia on thr right and then bring on Gaby for Valencia with Nani switching to right. That would leave most fullbacks with a heart attack after 90 min

  58. willierednut says:

Sky sports news sources are saying it’s a sprained ankle, 2 to 4 weeks.

  59. Ulster Red says:

    GHHT
    where is that source from?

  60. Costas says:

    @Rick

The whole season? I have to disagree. It’s his job as long he has been at United to stand in front of the back 4 in big games. Of course that won’t always work, but he is no different than the player we,ve seen in previous seasons.

  61. huzi says:

    yes costas thanks

  62. Sayyid says:

if rooney is out for a month then he’ll be back for the 2nd leg of the CL and the last 2 Prem games

lets hope he’s out for 2 weeks max

i think we can cope without him for a couple of weeks

berbatov will rise to the situation. the pressure will be on the rent boys on saturday. they have to win, and we dont. and they have that joke terry playing for them. easy

  63. Jeet says:

    Is this it? http://www.tribalfootball.com/man-utd-medical-chiefs-expect-rooney-miss-month-738701?

Nothing official yet – tribal football is mostly shit, so would still wait for confirmation.

  64. Costas says:

If willierednut is correct, he is missing the Chelsea, Blackburn and probably the City games. If we are going to win the league, we will have to do it without him.

  65. Sayyid says:

i agree with those who say Carrick hides in the big matches

with no Ronaldo or if Rooney isnt firing, we hardly see Carrick do a defence splitting pass/goal stopping tackle/thunderbolt from 25 yards

he has done this once and that was Roma at home

  66. King Eric says:

Typial fucking abu press in Ingerlund. I will put my house on it he will not be out for three months. Fucking sick of seeing them saying how it is a loss to Ingerlund and poor fabio. Oh do fuck off all we care about is he will be back soon for United. Backs to walls now lads and that’s when we are dangerous. The Rentboys will be cocky as fuck now. Jesus they get cocky if they beat Pompey at home. Time to show the Cockerney cunt’s .

  67. Ulster Red says:

    King Eric
    get into them lad!!!

  68. willierednut says:

Rooney’s a quick healer and over to you Berba.

  69. Costas says:

Yeah Carrick was pretty dreadful this season at the Emirates wasn’t he?

  70. Rick says:

Carrick was far better in previous seasons as he used to pick out a pass to the forwards but Scholes has been doing his job. Wesley Snijder would be a great signing although he wont leave Inter, at 25 he is the ideal replacement for Scholes!

  71. stretfordender says:

2-4 Weeks according to Sky sports news

  72. willierednut says:

King Eric – it’s all about England with the media and Martin Samuel is the worst.

  73. Sayyid says:

Carrick needs to do more than simply sweeping and passing it sideways or back to our defence

He needs to pass and move, and if he cannot we need to bring this type of player in (though I guess we already have in Anderson)

  74. willierednut says:

7 times Rooney done his right ankle.

  75. Costas says:

Ok, so England obsessed medai can rejoice. Their hero will be fit for the World Cup. As far as United, we will have to do it the hard way now.

  76. King Eric says:

willierednut – Yeah mate. Samuel is a big fat cockney twat. You should hear the scouser’s and the southerners. Fucking revelling in it. Saying Rooney is over hyped and a bit shit really. You couldn’t make it up. Just got to shut these clowns up.

  77. Costas says:

Carrick’s style of play is hard to please fans. At least Ferguson seems happy with him. If anything, taking him off yesterday and switching to 4-4-2 was a mistake. But the again, who did perform yesterday? Only VDS.

  78. Sayyid says:

We aren’t a 1 man team and the lads will show the useless gutter press that there are 10 other players on the field

We will finish them off at OT 2-0

  79. 7seagulls says:

rooneys sprained his ankle and is out for 2-4 weeks. could be worse i suppose but guna miss the rent boys and the 2nd leg

  80. rat1p says:

hate to wait for the official announcement
thought 7 is a lucky number now it has to be 4

  81. stretfordender says:

Nothing concrete confirmed, I said this morning I doubt it’s a big injury, looks like my thinking could be right. Come on Wazza, work more miracles!

  82. AlphaRS says:

Oh come on lads. Deserved to win or lose is something In-gur-land-ers use for when they get beat. This in addition to blaming United players for getting knocked out of the World Cup, etc.
Goals win games and Bayern scored 2 goals and United scored 1 goal.
We had a brilliant start when Rooney put us ahead. Even after that Rooney and Nani from memory had brilliant chances to score more goals but just did not finish. Some of these were long balls to Rooney. Meanwhile the midfield could not get their passing and possesion play together. Then for some strange reason while under pressure we switch to 4-4-2. Time and time again Bayern midfielders ran from the half way line to the edge of the penalty areas unchallenged whilst forcing VDS to make many saves. In fairness VDS has kept us in the tie but call me the eternal optimist but I can’t see the problem. Bayern scored 1 really lucky goal which was a deflection off Rooney. The other goal was from a defensive mix up.
All United need to do is ensure they do not concede and score a few goals.
What I will say though is that United are light upfront as we know if Rooney gets injured who is really that good to replace him? Or who else will share the goal scoring burden whether it be from the wingers or midfield? The performance last night was just simply not good enough. But we are lucky because we can afford to lose this game. As we have another chance at OT.

  83. Costas says:

2-4 weeks is a long time when you are in late March. He could be back for the City game and we just have to hope that we will still be ahead of Chelsea by then.

  84. Walk in the Park says:

since everybody play the guessing game i want share my prediction too
rooney is certainly out for chelsea game,..
but we still win it because own goal will make a comeback in that game…joking of course
i dont want to stress myself thinking the worse..cheers

  85. willierednut says:

    @Costas

There was a medical guy on talksport and he said it’ll likely be 4 weeks, so that would rule him out of the derby.

  86. AlphaRS says:

I won’t believe anything until I read it on the Man Utd website or quotes from United staff on sky sports.
If it is true that Rooney is out for 2-4 weeks than now is the time to see if United are a 1 man team or not.
It is also time to see whether Berbatov is the man.

  87. Costas says:

    @willierednut

Seems like it. If we are still alive and kicking in the title race, then Wayne will probably shoot for a City game return.

  88. shabadu84 says:

BTW have to love how all the media outlets are reporting this as “World Cup” news. idiots

  89. Giles Oakley says:

Jeet, I love the idea of giving the lads a team talk! It’s always been my dream to do that just before kick-off in a big match at Old Trafford. So here and now I declare to Sir Alex, I am ready, I’m willing and I’m able to send the boys out against Chelsea, all you need is to ask, I’ll be there. If he doubts my qualifications for the task, I’d remind him I used to be Player/ Manager of Amersham Ravers FC in the 60s. These days it’s all about ‘transferable skills’, so I feel I’m absolutely the right man for the job.

On the long term nature of ankle injuries, I can confirm that I got an ankle injury in 1964 which was still bothering me when I last played last year. I got it playing in the North Watford Sunday League against a British Rail team, right bastards the lot of them, like Leeds. I’d just scored a cracker (‘like Bobby Charlton, mate”) when their centre half ‘did’ me, injuring foot, ankle and knee all in one reckless lunge. For years I could predict weather changes from sensations in my ankle.

  90. Rick says:

The midfield need to chip in with there share of goals, Rooney cant do it all!

  91. Red Devil says:

    @ Giles Oakley…

you never fail to cheer me up…….looks like we have to do this without Rooney……As long as we have Sir Alex to prepare the team, I have hope yet!

  92. Jeet says:

@Giles Oakley: Seriously wondering now how to get the idea to SAF?!

  93. kel says:

The game against Chelsea will be the one! If we win that game, we will win Bayern with or without Rooney. We must put everything we had against Chelsea. We must WIN!

  95. Kings says:

Gutted we lost. But in all honesty, it was an accident waiting to happen. We were inviting far too much pressure and were careless in possession. If Rooney was fit, I would be confident about overturning the 2-1 defeat, but with him out, I’m extremely concerned that we may not find a breakthrough. I will gladly put my hands up and admit I am wrong, but until then I’m not overly confident. If you look at the 2-1 defeat at City in the 1st leg of the league cup semi-final, after that I was extremely confident of overturning that because of Rooney, but this is a different matter.

Much more confident after reading these comments. Bring ‘em on!

If your at Old Trafford this weekend and on wednesday! Get your fucking voice ready! Lets go mental for the lads were going to need it without Roo.
We can overcome this, the players need the 12th man and we’ve got to make it happen!

  98. Manchuchu says:

We need a hero to come through for us and we haven’t used all of our 9 lives yet.

I pity our enemies. They dance with the devil at Old Trafford

  99. Fred says:

Manchuchu, that was quite stirring stuff.
