France beat Australia 2-1 on Saturday morning and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba had a key role to play in the victory. It was his defence-splitting pass in to Antoine Griezmann that saw France awarded a penalty after intervention from VAR. The Atletico Madrid man put it away coolly.

Aston Villa’s Mile Jedinak equalised for Australia from the penalty spot before Pogba saw his effort loop over the goalkeeper to wrap up the three points.

Having been booed by French fans in the friendlies leading up to the tournament, Pogba answered his critics superbly.

“If i look at the midfielders in that team, he’s won more than what they won together,” Zlatan Ibrahimovic said of his former teammate. “Maybe Matuidi can open his mouth, say what he want but the rest can’t say nothing. When you see critics, it’s all jealousy.”
