Paul Pogba captained Manchester United to our first win of the season in the opening game against Leicester. After the game, the Frenchman spoke of the honour it is to wear the armband and the impact it may have on players who hope to follow his journey from the academy to the first team.

It’s always a pleasure for me, an honour to wear this armband. A lot of big players for story of the club have had it. It’s something great. To win today was most important. I scored a penalty, I’m very happy and really happy we started with a win.

It’s not a role you have to do. I think with everybody, all the players, all the team-mates, make you comfortable to wear this and proud to wear this. Even like when Michael Carrick came to talk to me and told me he wanted me to wear it because of the story of what I give to the club, to the people, to the fans, to the young players in the Academy. Stuff like that – they look up to me. I want to give back to them and always try my best to be thankful to the fans and to my team-mates.
