  1. DiegoForlanDK says:

    Roo, despite

  2. nicky says:

i ll go for RvP…. but he needs to find his cool and feel more at home in our shirt

  3. Paul H says:

Depends who’s in the team at the time, so you probably need 2-3 who are capable of reliably dispatching them. RvP, Rooney & Chicharito, despite the misses are the obvious choices. Surely we can’t miss any more this season. Could get costly as we hit the latter stages of the Champions League.

  4. Tony's says:

    Carrick…

  5. Callaban says:

Just bring giggs on for them then take him back off!!!!

  6. 12 cantonas says:

    rvp

  7. Man Utd Monki says:

    Rooney

  8. Dj says:

rooney…the best penalty taker in England ( i do like marios penalties though)

  9. FULLARD says:

rooney, he needs to remain our number one player, that means taking responsibility for the team, taking penalties and getting paid the most to do it.

  10. edhardy says:

    Valencia will be my man

  11. idiogoi says:

rooney shud but its coz hes been always takn dem

  12. thecrazywolfe says:

Giggs for the penalties, when available that is. Ando is also a decent candidate.

  13. Busby says:

Rooney and Van Persie are both absolutely brilliant takers. It should just be whoever is on a run and scoring goals. Van Persie is currently the one, but Rooney will no doubt take over the mantle as chief scorer as the season progresses and RvP requires some rest. Its not that important, either of them are outstanding takers.

  14. sjp says:

    wayne rooney!

  15. sorry but... says:

im with busby on this one, although ersonally believe that rooney along with balo as earlier mentioned are the best peno takers in th league. i think/hope yrsterdays miss was a one off for rooney who after a dodgy start to his penalty takin duties a while back has learnt and practised totake them very well indeed. as for the fact that he is the most paid, well, not quite sure that should hve any relevance on wether he takes a peno or not to be fair!
chicarito would be well down my list of takers….not the cleanest striker of a ball atm.

  16. parryheid says:

    Valencia would also be mine

  17. DEVILisRED says:

    rooney follows by RVP.

if neither is on the field, then chicharito follows by giggs.

  18. TheProphet says:

I am glad RVP did not sign up for the penalty yesterday, against his old side. It would only bring extra pressure. There was really no point when we had Roo on the pitch. I think we have many good penalty takers though. Roo, Giggs, Scholes.. And obviously RVP.

  19. Andromeda says:

Both Rooney and RVP are a good penaltay taker but sometimes they are just too predictable for goal keepers.personally I can’t decide but I vote for Rooney to be our number one candidate for such role.BTW Alan shearer for me was the best penalty takes in the premier league.

  20. feedthatllama says:

Robin. Roo misses pens far too regularly

  21. Ash says:

    Rooney
    Rvp
    Giggs (If he is playing)
    Young
    Hernandez
    Carrick
    Nani
    Anderson
Valencia(Honestly have never seen him take penalties)

This will be my order. We need to improve in pens. God forbid if there is a Pen shoot out in Knock outs then what. Rooney will be the safest option if not RVP.

  22. mufc69 says:

anyone who can hit the back of the net very poor effort so far ffs

  23. iDon says:

    Rooney

  24. The Devil in Me says:

    Rooney
    RVP
    Anderson
    Young
    Carrick

  25. shoox says:

    Rooney

  26. Deano says:

    Fat frank

  27. markynorbs says:

    Rooney
    RvP
    Giggs
    Scholes
    Carrick

  28. James7t7 says:

De gea!! Ha ha Otherwise RvP for me

  29. Haval MUFC says:

    Rooney or Carrick

  30. Devil United Indonesia says:

this must be unhappy for Sir. Alex and that’s become his homework to make effective the pinalty chance. and i think the best PK taker in united is scholes, giggs, rooney and the last is RVP..cause in taking pinalty they must have experience, accuracy, mentality, and timing that on 100% great !!

  31. samuel - united WE stand says:

If you want to hit a good penalty, take a look at the germans. They absolutely thump it into the top corner with accuracy and precision. Rooney on his day will smash it into the net, same goes for van persie. Either will contribute on that front but van persie probably has more accuracy in that hammer left foot. Rooney will be back practising again hopefully.

  32. parryheid says:

By the time a keeper went for a Valencia penalty he would be too late it would have rocketed in

  33. samuel - united WE stand says:

Parry – when has valencia ever taken a penalty to give you the idea he may be good at it?

  34. AntiScouser says:

    @Deano

    It’s Fat Fwank.

  35. Rd5454 says:

    I can’t choose from the team,sad

  36. Rd5454 says:

    Irwin ruud and cantona!

  37. Ocean07 says:

    RVP for me

  38. Rd5454 says:

And forgot ,hargo is the best

  39. Rd5454 says:

    Maybe try Tom and toni

  40. Gentlekez says:

RVP! That will also give him more confidence and boost his golden boot chances

  41. shakshamboo says:

I don’t see anyone from the current takers to be able to outwit the keeper. So its whoever can hit the target with the most power and precision. That would be RVP at the moment.

  42. Henkka says:

Büttner – he has a foot like a traction engine

  43. parryheid says:

    samuel-united We stand.

Can’t say I ever have seen him take one. What makes me think he would be good at taking them ? The power of his shot does,if a goalie is unfortunate enough to get in the way of it then he is going in the net as well.

  44. berbaclass says:

Rooney. His penalty yesterday was just unlucky. He placed it at the bottom right corner like he always does, but was a couple of inches unlucky and hit the post

  45. Chris says:

    De Gea

  46. Giles Oakley says:

It’s shocking how bad United have become with pens. All the players you might think of have missed vital ones (eg Scholes in the FA Cup in 2005) and the mere fact we have to ponder the question shows how bad things have got. Nani is unreliable and sometimes just plain silly. Giggs isn’t bad (eg Chelsea in the league cup) but won’t always be around and has missed some. It’s amazing that Rooney, who belts a good one when in the right frame of mind, has actually missed 7 out of 20 in the league. It’s a good point that we want Rooney to think of himself as the main man, the one around whom the team is built, but his failure rate means we really can’t rely on him. I think I’d go for RvP,althugh I can see why yesterday wouldn’t have been ideal for him. Earlier in the season, after RvP had missed one , Fergie admitted no thought had gone into who should take penalties, which was very surprising in such a meticulous man whose attention to detail is legendary. I hate the way too many United players sort of saunter up with a short run-up and tamely clip it a the keeper. I want to see an unstoppable missile launched into the top corner past the proverbial ‘despairing ‘ keeper. Come on United, get it sorted!

  47. Proverb says:

The power of tonyV’s shot could go out for throw in 99% of the time if he was chosen to be our peno taker from now on
Maybe because he’s soo used to crossing…. ;)

  48. Proverb says:

Imo RVP is our currently best striker of the ball
It would be silly to think otherwise

    Sentiments: Rooney

  49. parryheid says:

Maybe, but all that’s required is to be on target and that’s not hard when facing the goal.Lorimer of Leeds was renowned for the power of his shot and I dont think he missed too many/had many stopped.

  50. Joffrey Baratheon says:

I can’t believe I’m readin that Rooney should be our penalty taker ahead of Van Persie from some people. Rooney’s record from the spot is pretty average and compare to Van Persie’s. Van Persie must have not fancied it against his old club is all that I can think of yesterday.

  51. pablo says:

    sir alex

  52. DreadedRed says:

The obvious candidates are Rooney and RVP, for so many reasons.

They both take great penalties. Both are well used to the pressure of needing to score. Both are likely Golden Boot contenders. Every goal a striker scores, boosts his confidence in front of goal. Strikers need to avoid barren spells (esp Rooney)

Thinking ‘out of the box’, with regard to the open nature of this thread, I’d suggest Rafael.

He has the power, the ball-striking, the audacity and verve. He wants to score goals. Were he to have a high scoring-rate taking penalties, I believe it would immeasurably aid his transition into a world-class wing-back.

  53. Proverb says:

    @Pablo
i blame your mum who let you out of your cave
by this time of the day. ;)

  54. Proverb says:

    Talking of rafael….
Take a look at what the old scot had to say regarding his contribution so far this season
And how much a player he can become in a near future if he keeps going at the rate he’s at at the minute, and how fucking improvements has made since joining the club together with his twin brother who’s currently enjoring a torrid spell at QPR due to injuries and his current teams bad form: http://t.co/L67ZE9NJ

  55. Red74eric says:

    Simple, RVP

  56. Redbilly says:

I agree with RVP . But yesterday , his first game against his old club, I think it was right for Rooney to take it. Maybe it was pre agreed between him and Rooney.

  57. makama Salis says:

Carick was one time recommended by Ferguson in the absence of ronaldo… I think I’ll go with the boss’s initial choice.

  58. Tonka Norris says:

It should stay with Rooney. He needs to practice them more, get a better technique, but why not? Penalties are a crap shoot; it’s possible that his replacement would miss as many anyway. No, penalties are your job, Rooney, and we expect you to deliver.

  59. Bishopville Red says:

ME. I’m fucking gold from the spot. Fergie Fergie, sign me up!

PS: Rooney is on 65% for what’s described as a 90% success rate activity. NEXT!

  60. bbabyj says:

Rooney is pretty shit at penalties. Look at the stats. He scores fewer than the average penalty taker.

  61. pablo says:

thanks proverb i’ll just retreat back into my cave…………………..couldnt resist it………………….!!!

  62. The One says:

English players are not known to be good penalty takers – my vote goes to RVP!!

  63. TailoredVagabond says:

Who the FUCK voted for Nani?!?!!?!?

Hang your fucking heads in shame.

  64. Fibes says:

    Denis Irwin.

Failing that, Giggsy, then RVP, then Roo.

  65. sorry but... says:

just checked rvp peno stats from last few seasons, and looks as though he was not top choice always for arsenal and missed one in 3 often

  66. FletchTHEMAN says:

Roo has missed 3 recently. That is just not good enough.

For me it has to be RVP or Giggs on form.

If it is a shoot out. I’d add Rooney, Valencia, Nani, Carrick. All cool as cucumbers ;)

  67. kel says:

    Giggs

  68. Fibes says:

FletchTHEMAN> Carrick could be interesting. Hmmmm

  69. FletchTHEMAN says:

Question: Did Wilshire get a second yellow, or a straight Red?

Guardian play by pay assumed it was a second Y, but stated, if could have been a straight red.

But ESPN time line list only 3 Y for Arsenal and 1 R, no indication of a Y at the time of the R.

Who has a link that can unequivocally clear this up. Maybe the FA?

  70. Marq says:

There are not many penalty takers these days who try to send the keeper the wrong way. Most now just hit it as accurate as possible. By now all of us know Rooney favours the keepers bottom right corner.

  71. FletchTHEMAN says:

You all might not know it, but Büttner took all the spot kicks AND pens for his former team.

Shades of Denis Irwin? Guess that will be something to watch how it develops.

Anyone have an answer to the Wilshere question. second yellow or straight red????

  72. Marq says:

    @Fletch

    It was a second yellow

  73. Zulu-Utd-Malta says:

Yes. Why not De Gea ?

  74. gfunk says:

not giggs, dont trust left footers for penalties. although sheedy of everton had a killer left foot! id have raphael take them! brazilians dont tend to miss penalties!

  75. FletchTHEMAN says:

Great week for United! Top of the prem!

Table (w/ Red colored spectacles) ;)

    1. United……win………..24pts
    2. Chelsea…draw………23pts
    3. City……….draw………22pts
    4. Spurs…….lose……….17pts
    5. Everton….draw………17pts
    6. Arsenal….lose……….15pts
    .
    .
    .
‘Pool…….draw………11pts (move up to 12th)

  76. Scott N1406 says:

I’d like to see Carrick have a go. Composed, can hit a ball well with the side foot, experienced. Why not?

  77. Bishopville Red says:

Carrick had a go before. He hit a totally shit one vs. Burney a few years back that cost us points and put him off the list indefinitely!

  78. salford bean says:

    rvp

    rooney

    anderson

    chicharito

    giggsy (if playing) / carrick

  79. Piit says:

How can people say Rooney? Legend. Sure. But good penaltytaker? Fuck no. 7 misses in 20 tries. Giggs for me. RvP second.

  80. Red Zeppelin says:

Voted for Nani because I can.

  81. Red Army 75 says:

Well said Fibes – Denis Irwin was pure quality. Proves it’s not about being a striker. Though the amazing Eric Cantona was just as good. In those days a pen for us equalled a goal basically. A penalty taker needs to have a cool head and maybe need to enjoy the battle of wits with the keeper. Eric certainly did. Eric and Denis, as good as Eric and Ernie. Maybe the present lot should watch them at it.

  82. actantul says:

Young was a good penalty taker at villa.
I think he should be our number 1

  83. United_Forever says:

For me it has to be Van Persie. Rooney has missed too many.

  84. murt73 says:

While some are mentioning Irwin, cantona.. Bruce holds record for most pens scored 4 us in a seaon.. 11..He may not have looked the most flashy but he could put em away
Right now though has to be RVP

  85. MyCowIsTheBest says:

Carrick. He is by far my first choice.

I would love Giggs to be the second choice, but he does not need the confidence from the goals.

Between Rooney and RvP, it depends on the situation. When we are trailing, against any opposition other than Arsenal, I would prefer RvP.

If we are in front or level, I would prefer Rooney. Because the confidence from scoring a goal would make Rooney unplayable.

  86. gnuh says:

To be honest, I’ve never rated Rooney as PK taker, even more so I think Nani is a safer option. But now we have RvP, so there shouldn’t be any question about it anymore.

  87. Tmon says:

    Dennis Irwin

  88. MSK says:

Let giggsy if he’s playing..if not, it will always be RvP…

  89. Daniel says:

If Giggs is on the field, he should take them. Cool and experienced head and a superb left foot.

  90. Raf's curling tongs says:

Gotta be someone who’s a guaranteed starter so I don’t even know why Nani’s names is in the poll. The lad who’s shit decision making cost us the league cup, who’s taking the piss over his contract, may not be with us next season, and is not even in the first team, he should be our penalty taker?

How’s this gonna work? We just make sure we only get penalties in the 10 odd games he’ll play this season? We’re 15 odd games in and have had 4 pens plus at least 2 big shouts. That’s more than 1 in 3 matches, so once again it has to be a starter.

RVP first, then anyone else who’s got the guts. Rafa’s an interesting shout as he’s got some massive cojones.

As much as it pains me to say it; Lumplard is probably the best pen tekker in the league, and Le Tissier Tissue the best in top flight history.

  91. stret end ryda says:

Giggs if available, he scored a great pen for team gb at the olympics vs japan

  92. Johnbosco Obiora says:

Van persie should be taking pk bcus of holding boot

  93. Abhinav says:

Fact : Whenever Rooney misses a penalty, we inevitably tend to win the match. Both are equally good,So Rooney it should be for sentimental reasons.

  94. fun3sak says:

why scholesy isnt taking pens anymore? http://vimeo.com/41973071 7:05 here, incredible stuff!

  95. Louis says:

I cant remember ever seeing michael carrick take a penalty. But his technique should fit that task perfectly: he hits the ball really crisply, and accurately. Plus hes in the team [unlike scholes and giggs]. You need to have consistency, hence a first teamer

  96. RedBorneo says:

Voted for Carrick is a Silly joke mate..
