Quick Reactions To United’s Victory Over Southampton

1. Southampton had lost their opening two games of the season but had taken the lead twice against City at the Etihad, so they’re not total mugs. They took the lead twice against us too but this game was at their place. Despite an impressive opening ten minutes, with United playing some great football, we just didn’t get to grips with the game. Sloppy passing and not enough urgency. Fortunately, fairly fittingly for Ferguson’s 1000th game in the league, we scored two goals at the death to leave with the three points.

2. I think Robin van Persie is great. I’m really pleased we signed him. He is a quality player and we are a much better side for having him in the squad. But I cannot get over his decision to take a penalty like that. Be a fancy fucker when we’re 3-0 up. With 20 minutes to go when your team is losing, you smash the ball in to the back of the net, you don’t do your best attempt to mimic Andrea Pirlo and fuck it up. His left foot is lethal, as we saw with his first equalising goal, so why he opted for a penalty kick like that, I do not know. As someone said to me, you can take the player out of Arsenal, but you can’t take the Arsenal out of a player. “When you’re 2-1 down, you can’t take a penalty like that,” Robin said after the game. Agreed!

3. Thankfully, Robin escaped the hair dryer treatment at full-time because he went and scored a bloody hattrick to win us the game 3-2. Unreal. His first goal was technically the best, with him pulling away at the back post, controlling on his chest, before smashing it in at the far post. The second came thanks to a rare appearance from Rio Ferdinand at a corner, with his header coming back off the post and to the feet of Van Persie to smash in. He sealed the hattrick in the 92nd minute after Nani took a corner that beat the first man! A great header from the Dutchman left the keeper with no chance and United secured their first away win of the season.

4. As should have been worrying last season, it was Paul Scholes who really turned things around for United. Whilst RvP was obviously given the Man of the Match award, he conceded that Scholesy should have won it, claiming that everything started “ticking” once he came on. Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick didn’t have a bad game but they just seemed fairly forgettable. Carrick found RvP with a couple of balls over the top but they weren’t making an impact on the game. That all changed when Scholesy was came on. He turns 38 in a couple of months time and if we need him to help us beat newly promoted teams, it makes you realise how heavily we will rely on him for our big games this season. When you’ve got someone approaching 40-years-old filling the role of the player who makes the team “tick”, you’ve got to worry for the future. Cleverley is developing but as yet, he’s no Paul Scholes.

5. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic played their first game together since the first week of December following injuries to both of them but they hardly covered themselves in glory today. Dinky full-backs Patrice Evra and Rafael da Silva were the players marking both of Southampton’s goalscorers when the balls came in and I can’t quite work out why. There needs to be more common sense at the back, rather than our tall players just watching the balls float over their head, then watching our tiny full backs being out-jumped by our opposition’s tall forwards. It was hard to have much faith in the defence whenever Southampton attacked and that needs to change. Jonny Evans was back on the bench though so at least we’re getting more options back.

6. Whilst we dominated possession and chances, today’s performances wasn’t good enough and we got away with it. That’s why Ferguson was so keen to sign RvP I presume, because when you have world class players in the team, you can pull out results you don’t necessarily deserve. Our Dutchman can’t bail us out every week though and three games in, we’re hardly looking convincing, despite showing glimpses of brilliance. Back to the drawing board and let’s get things working for after the International break.

    First!!!
    Depressing to watch

  2. gazzer says:

I know that Southampton played us very close. nevertheless, too many players unable to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Kagawa, Cleverly, Carrick, Welbeck were all too easily bundled over and hurried into making mistakes.
Scholes made a world of difference.
The only youngster who seems to have had a bright start to the season is Rafael

  3. The Cuntona says:

Cleverley will never be a Paul Scholes, so don’t wait on that. I don’t see why everyone rates the lad, every time I see him play he moves the ball 2 meters to the side. It’s like he’s afraid to attack. He can run and tackle decently but that’s about it. RvP was great today and I liked his comments about Scholesy. The Ginger Prince saves us yet again…fuck me but how often have we said that? The midfield really needs sorting out. Liked what I saw from Hernandez as well when he came on. Had some nice touches and runs

  4. Proverb says:

    @Mufc_Info: RVP stats: 3 games, 4 goals!
    Brilliant player
    A clinical finisher
    What a player

  5. reasy says:

    poor game smh

  6. DreadedRed says:

Scott with quick reactions, to our late reaction.

Well done United! Three valuable points and a dash of United resolve added to new players.

  7. reddvilkhan says:

  8. Proverb says:

    Robin van persie
Everytime he touches the you know
    He’s going to score
    Brilliant, brilliant finisher, enough said

  9. zelh says:

I will never hear again from anyone that our midfield is good enough.

    eatt your fucking humble pie.

  10. Georgejoseph says:

It’s a bit of a mess . The constant changing of formation to fit players in. Why play welbeck on the left. Yes cleverly might of had a 94% pass rate . But it was going nowhere .

  11. Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson says:

If this keeps up, RVP will be giving Messi and Ronaldo a run for their money!

All this pleasantness aside, I can’t help but feel a bit troubled by how dependent we are on a 37 year old–albeit a seemingly ageless 37 year old all-time great legend. Still, though, …

  12. Jay says:

Scott is fucking bang on about everything, hopefully our defence will get sorted. Our midfield is what I worry for especially when it comes to the Champions League, of all the top four teams our midfield is the most lackluster, it needs sorting immediately. Like I have said for the past three years all teams need to do against us to win is bully our midfield.

  13. Georgejoseph says:

Jay agreed that’s why we should of signed a dembelle or Garcia

  14. iced earth says:

good article Our midfield was again dominated, for 3 or 4 years we are suffering in the middele i can t understand why we don t sign a cmd!!
evra played well in the first half but shoked me in the second, buttner not even in the bench,if fergie didn t trust in fabio who have ch l final how can he play buttner ahed of evra?
i think chicharito played a big part in changing the game with his great movement
danny and tom must improve somtimes they forget that they are playing for united
rotating gks is not a good idea that will affect ddg
we must rise our game come on united

  15. theredderdevil says:

Todays mistakes aas much as everyone wil say were not rafael being short but cleverly and welbeck not turning up. maybe they need more loan spells

  16. parryheid says:

Phew a close run thing,Three points I thought we weren’t getting.

  17. Corea says:

Don’t want to talk about the way we played today. Will gladly read Scott’s reaction but so relieved we did it again. 6 points instead of awful 3 points start. And RvP hat-trick.

  18. theredderdevil says:

Todays fuck up as much as guys want apportion blame to evra n rafael being too short was caused by welbeck n cleverlys no show

  19. Raizzen says:

NANI’S CORNER BEAT THE FIRST MAN!

Sorry that just HAD to be in caps.

  20. samuel - united WE stand says:

There’s a big difference between cleverley and scholes. Tom is more of a short passing, knitting and move midfielder, he’s never going to ping cross field passes like scholes who can only be rivaled by xavi and pirlo in world football. Cleverley needs to impose himself more, get more upper body strength and dominate the game. I wouldn’t write him off but looking at his passing statistics, he barely loses the ball but the question to him will be, can you grab the ball and carve teams open with a clever pass or a goal, he showed in the community shield last season that he can be involved in opening teams up and hopefully we’ll see that.

Agreed on VanPersie, sometimes you won’t be at the races but if you have a devastating deadly finisher, you can nick victory from the jaws of defeat.

We sure need to improve, especially defensively as people do talk about a monster in midfield, the goals we concede come from set pieces, we’re usually strong there and have to improve, collectively and as a unit.

  21. Little Red Ant says:

any idea why DDG was dropped. He has played well in last two games – did this last year and lost his confidence. Need to keep same defence as often as possible

  22. Dev says:

I’ve said this at the other thread, i’ll say again here:

    We can’t play 5 midfielders.

If this goes on, it’ll be the Ronaldo / Rooney / Berbatov / Tevez debacle again on how to shoehorn so much attacking talent into 11 places.

We were at our best once we reverted to 4-4-2.

If we revert back to a standard 4-4-2, the biggest casualty will be Kagawa, unless he somehow adapts to playing deep like Anderson did.

  23. gexmex says:

One very basic question: What is wrong with good old 4-4-2. When Hernandez came in that is what the team played for the last 20 minutes. From that minute onwards, it was a case of them chasing us, instead of the other way around. Two strikers, two brilliant wingers and one Paul Scholes directing the orchestra.
I don’t say this is the only formation possible, but at times of trouble it is nice to have the players to perform it. (Wenger must be asking himself why didn’t he try it with VP). It was nice for those 20 minutes to forget about link up and versatility and the kind of rubbish that is now traded for football, and return to basics of midfieldrs that know to pass the ball, and strikers that know when to run inside the box.

  24. FletchTHEMAN says:

Not one to be overly optimistic, but this Robin fella……. could start to grow on ya! ;)

Great composure from United to come back twice. But honestly, what is it going to take to keep a clean sheet at an away fixture.

  25. samuel - united WE stand says:

It’s not about relying on scholes. Paul, even at 38, is still a world class player with a unique talent. What he did today shows why he’ll hopefully be important this season from the bench. He’s fresh and can control a game within the last few minutes in a game, he just shouldn’t start games that requires energy.

  26. FletchTHEMAN says:

PS Thanks STR! Quick reactions should be quick! And we should give ya fair credit! Cheers.

  27. Rasta says:

Would have mentioned Chicharito in there… he also made a big difference when he came on!
RvP & Chica for next game ,,,

  28. Red Keighley says:

Typical UTD leaving it to the final few minutes to snatch a victory. But this should not hide the fact that this was Southampton that outplayed our midfield – a! newly promoted side. How the hell are we going to compete with the top PL and CL teams with such an indifferent midfield. Our MOM according to RVP was the 37 year old ginger prince – a ridiculous situation to be in! I like Tom Cleverley but at 23 I do not see a top class player in the making. Anderson will NEVER be good enough and looks like he needs to go on the Atkins diet. I am becoming obsessional over this issue but why the fuck when Berba decided to go to Fulham did we not get Dembele for £9/£10m. After his display against us last week he would have strengthened the midfield immensely and allowed us to use Scholesy when we need him to change a game.

  29. gazzer says:

Raizzen – I was thinking the same thing!!
At this rate, he’d better be glad he’s still only getting 90k per week

  30. ak47 says:

everyone’s being a bit harsh on Clevs, he played ok, decent first half but anonymous in the second. Michael Carrick on the other hand, along with Vidic, their distribution from the back was concerning. Carrick needs to be more assertive. He’s a senior player.

Those who don’t see why clevs is rated highly. Watch his movement, how many touches he takes to release the ball, how long he holds on to the ball and the intent when he passes. Give and go, give and go, always looking for the ball.

  31. Diego says:

    1. Welbeck shouldn’t play on the wing. It just doesn’t work. Total waste. We should play, you know, a winger on the wings…
    2. If DDG was dropped for one mistake when he had been one of our better players for the 2 first games, Lindy deserves to be dropped for the fact that he can’t shoot the ball.
    3. Cleverley and Carrick had very poor games. A combo that doesn’t work? Certainly if last season is anything to go by…
    4. Heart stops everytime the opposition crosses the ball.
    5. A 38 year-old Scholes is still our best midfielder.

  32. Marq says:

Rvp has now scored 51 goals in 60 appearence in the league (i think), that is why he is worth the money

  33. mancdub says:

It wasn’t pretty but that makes the result even sweeter. There’s no point being negative about the performance. We came from behind twice to snatch three points at the death. It’s results like this that win titles.

  34. samuel - united WE stand says:

Cleverley is 23, when did that become a finished article? his strengths are quick pass and move, he’s not really had a full season at united, he’ll get better with more experience. The transfer window slammed shut a day or two ago, we should accept the players we have. The manager will do what’s best, he makes mistakes but more often than not, he comes out triumphant.

  35. georgejoseph says:

Fergie on RVP I think it will be a good signing for us………MUTV

  36. dasilvatwins says:

before anyone goes off on one , on why kagawa was subbed, he was tiring , and if you watch the match back you will see he was always closing down and never giving the opposition any space. as for carrick i think he is at the age of no return cant see him being any better than he currently is ( hopefully i will be proved wrong) but it seems he takes his decision making from nani. wouldnt be a bad idea to start evans at RB away till jones or smalling comes back , as i believe away from home rafael is way too much of a liability, ( he is a big one when playing home!). kagawa will improve so dont panic too much into the ” who will fill scholes role” as i have seen he has potential, much more than cleverly and ando , to fills scholes’s boots. what i was fuming at most were the poorly weighted passes and the distribution from defence. welbeck needs to be playing up top , or on the bench , he does not look in place at LAM or LW or whatever position you want to call it , chicha first touch wernt bad today , ( the balls normally go to hong kong) atleast today his first touch kept the ball inside southampton , wish to see more of him and letting RVP play behind him and switch RVP around with kagawa , as i think his eager to run so much will be his downfall , i hope he knows he does not get a winters break like he would normally. hopefully this will kick start the season. :D MUFC

  37. Joffrey Barathron says:

We started well in the opening 5/10 minutes without being a major threat mind you. Once Southampton settled down they caused us major problems, too many for my liking. Scott you say Rio and Vidic should be holding some blame but they can’t be havin themselves dragged completely out of position when opposing strikers are targettig our full backs. Rafael didn’t have a clue where Lambert was allowing him to get the jump on him where as he could have at least done enough to make it more difficult for him. We didn’t match their intensity for large parts of that game which was disappointing. Unhappy to see Welbeck playing on the left wing again. I don’t care how bad Nani was against Everton at least he gives us some much needed width and it’s his natural position! Nothing infuriates me more then players playing out of position, especially when there is no excuse. Van Persie was obviously the difference despite his moment of madness. 3 massive points considering the performance. We need to tighten up badly at the back. There was mayhem every time they crossed the ball into our box.

  38. medumtum says:

I think Cleverley is being misunderstood. He certainly is not a Paul Scholes and honestly who is. Cleverleys is a completely different game, he plays short passes and then moves to make himself available for a return pass and thereby generates awkward angles for through balls all at a high tempo. It certainly requires a degree of understanding with fellow players and concomitant technical ability to be effective, and i feel too often today when cleverley looked for the return ball he never received it. Our play overall was too slow to complement that type of play anyways. Scholesys game on the other hand is instant control at a slower tempo, with long passes to switch play and thoughtful short ones, which is significantly more effective in the second half of games when the oppostion are tiring and not pressing as intensely. I was more hopeful for the Cleverley Carrick combo but they didn’t seem to gel as much as ando and clevs do, where andos forward movement seems to unleash cleverleys short passing in and around the box where it is more incisive. The disappointment to me was Kagawa whose anticipated understanding with van persie appeared to diminish as compared to last week. The international break couldnt have come at a better time. Van persie firing though means we have a safeguard in place and thank God for that. Nani understatedly also improved our play overall with giving us a two sided attack, wellbeck is clearly not doing the job in balancing out the left hand side. Still three points while we were stuttering against a sweeping so’ton is two points at the very least gained. No shame in that. We have our problems to be sure though…

  39. supertramp says:

@Dev: The Ronaldo/Rooney/Berbatov/Tevez “debacle” is a myth. The four of them rarely played in any starting line-up together. A rare occasions that they did, one of the most memorable results was against Spurs, the played together for 45 mins in the 2nd half and we scored 5 goals. There was no debacle as you have suggested here.

  40. Busby babes says:

Only plausiable conclusion i can come too with regards to fergie not wanting to bring a more defensive midfielder in is that he wants to make the title race more intresting, because offensively we look fine still in the opinion at times we leave the back four to exposed, on a lighter not has the old saying goes to win and not play well is a sign of a good team, van persie you beauty

  41. zelh says:

What I don’t get is, why is Anderson after his good display against Fulham not even on the bench?
Why is an 18-yo inexperienced player on the bench who would have never come on since we know of our problems away from home.

some mind-boggling decisions from Fergie today.

dropping De Gea for a mistake Vidic commited more or less is moronic.

  42. dasilvatwins says:

@medum im pretty sure kagawa has been selected for japan , if anything the ” break” has made the situation even worse

  43. Raizzen says:

I don’t have problem’s with his style. I just think he needs to assert himself more (esp. when faced against lesser opponent who wouldn’t wait for you to pass the ball). And he needs to be more composed. He doesn’t look settled Cleverley.

Fact is our midfield was overran on all three games. Worrying.

  44. Dev says:

If anything, this shows how important Carrick is.

He had an off day, and look what happened.

  45. dasilvatwins says:

@dev i know he was out of position, but it has not been carricks first off day

  46. Joffrey Barathron says:

Dev, I don’t understand the point you’re trying to make? Carrick despite the couple of quick balls looking for Van Persie was very sloppy in possession an was caught sleeping more than once. He had a poor game.

  47. Corea says:

    September 2, 2012 at 19:45
    Dev says:

lol you know you can draw 2 different conclusions from your post :) i made the other one :)
We have 2 weeks to the Wigan game. So basically 3 weeks to get ready for the big turnaround in the way we playour football.
I respect Wigan but i just hope OT is good enough place to see us through.

These international breaks is fucking unbearable though. But what can you do…

  48. parryheid says:

    United4life.
Still think my post from two days ago was harsh?

    Utd4life.

I admire your confidence but don’t share it I think we are in for a dreadful season and as far as I am concerned it’s neglect. You cant go into the season with our poor midfield and not do nothing about it but I am just going to suck it up and stay silent from now on no matter how bad it turns out and it will be bad imo

  49. Joffrey Barathron says:

Parryheid, what do you consider a bad season then? What is your prediction?

  50. stretfordend ole says:

there was a number of problems today.

Carrick too slack and not playing with enough tempo, too many backward passes.

Vida and Rio not commanding enough at the back and slack passes going forward.

Linnegard distribution not quick or good enough.

the full backs left exposed too many times.

Wellbeck came off his wing too many times, which meant there was no ball out to the left wing.

all this can be worked on, hopefully Rio and Vida can get some decent fitness work over the next 2 weeks.

  51. samuel - united WE stand says:

If anything, realisation that all opponents in this league will pose problems, they have quality players too. Some of us think we’ll turn up at an opposition’s home or at oldtrafford and think we’ll roll over teams. Not going to happen. Can united get better? damn right but we’ve not really clicked, We’ve been patched up all season, it’s important to not peak within 3games into the season.

  52. medumtum says:

    @dev
Agreed. Carrick does usually start putting in his better performances later in the season though, so would give him atleast a good couple of games in his usual postion before i start worrying about him.
    @dasilvatwins
Really hope it doesnt. For me the break provides everybody, not just kagawa, more time to settle in. As a whole United haven’t looked that fluent, and by that i mean particularly the back four and how they play with the midfielder in front of them, as contrasted with our start last season.

  53. Joffrey Barathron says:

One thing I will say and I’m ire everyone with any sense is all aware, but the premiership is far more competitive than it has been for a long time. There is far less susposed bankers than there used to be so we should expect to see everyone dropping points, even the ‘amazing’ Man City who have had smoke blown up their arses by pundits and critics alike despite only beating the apparent worse United squad in decades (depleted by injuries) to the league title on goal difference. We have problems at the start of the season I’m not denying that but there will be lots of twists and turns and we will give City a run for their money without a doubt.

  54. DreadedRed says:

RVP has scored 75% of his United goals in one game. He needs to spread them out more.

  55. dasilvatwins says:

does anyone know if fletcher has been selected in the 25 man squad registration, maybe if he comes back fit , he can provide that “umph” energy and general cojones in the midfield

  56. NBI Red Onion says:

Great write up Scott, we struggled more than we should have.

Kagwa was man marked by one of their players and knocked off the ball too easily, one of those led to a goal for SouthH. The pressure they put him under meant his passing game suffered and he had no time on the ball, the pace of the game seemed to unsettle him and Scholes bought compsure, as our passing from Carrick and Cleverly was generally slow, obvious it meant Kagwa also had to wait for rather than run onto the ball and his man marker had time to bounce him off.

I think after a great season last year Carrick is having his usual slow start. I don’t think Evra and Rafael did too much wrong, Evra slipped for one of their goals and almost scored, Rafael’s cross was what got us a goal. So they made an overall positive contribution. I think Vidic’s heading everything away ability is still coming back, he seems to be jumping less, maybe due to his injury.

RVP – what can you say he is a starman. Danny seemed to lack confidence and played poorly, he has played on the wing before and on left of an attacking 3, his tracking back and helping Evra out and marking was really poor and I felt he just did not bother to make the effort tracking back and marking that he usually does, he was lazy today. Pea looked really good when he came on and am keen to see more from him.

Scholes is making me really sad, what would I give for him to just be five more years younger, losing him will be a huge blow, his comeback last season was the only reason in my view that we were level on points last year.

However, I am not unhappy with the MF. The defence is coming back. Its the left wing that seems to be the issue, we have no near-Giggs replacement and quite frankly Giggs on the wing for 45mins would have done better than Welbeck or Nani (who can do the job if he kicks on). Ashley is not in Giggs league. To me that is where we need to strengthen more than DM, Carrick is our DM, the problem is he lacks the pace to deal with forwards and the heading ability we sometimes need against teams and he sometimes sits too close to the defence in positioning and takes a while to get his passing going. When he sits too far back and his passing vision is off it slows our attack until you get someone like Scholes who can knock it forward with accuracy.

  57. Busby babes says:

Need to impose ourselves in middle of the park has i’ve eluded to many a time that normally gives you the impetus to go on and win the game, we do have players who offer us an outlet in terms of retaining possesion just think we lack that drive at times.

  58. Dela says:

I agree that Welbeck has been really uninspiring on the wing, don’t know why Fergie keeps trying it. I will say though that Scholes, even at 38, would be the best midfielder if he went to most clubs in the world. The impact he had today right from his first touch was just sublime, he’d fit in any team. I think our midfield woes aren’t as bad as they were, it’s about finding the right combo now.

The second goal Southampton scored today was painful to watch, I think Evra might want to check his footwear or something, had we lost the game 2-1 it would have been hard to take that slip AND RvP’s disastrous penalty. Still, RvP showing why he cost £24 million, what a wonderful character he has to respond to his huge mistake by making it meaningless to the final score, and then to still kick himself about it being interviewed afterwards.

  59. CyRed says:

Crystal clear: we urgently need a mf player who can keep the ball for us and make things happen otherwise we r going nowhere this term; can’t keep relying on scholsey for ever.

  60. parryheid says:

    Joffrey Barathon.

Last season I considered a bad season. This season we have at least got a secondary left back who if he is decent will prevent most of the problems that came down our left wing. But now all teams are going to come barreling down on our midfield and be on top of our last line game after game and you can bet on that.So I don’t see an improvement on last seasons performances in any competitions, there are a lot of far superior teams who will make hay with our midfield certainly all European teams but I will suck it up.What and why do you visualise happening this season.

  61. United Till I Die says:

Top round up Scott, the only thing left to say is “Where’s Anderson?”

    - Answers on a post card fellas!

  62. T. says:

Drop Welbz now. He is a benchplayer at best! He isn´t united material!

Good that the quick reactions is back on track. Thanks STR!

  63. TK99 says:

well well well. I would love to talk about few things regarding this freaking game.
1.SAF spoke about United working the whole week on Crosses from both flanks and we ended up conceding two goals from crosses.I really like Rafa and i want to play for Man United for another 10 years, but like De Gea’ areal presence, he seems to lose concentration during games which resulted in conceding goals .He needs to work very hard on his covering and clearing duties , if he’s ever to be regarded a top class right back. Evra is not the greatest defender, but in fairness to him, he has upped his game since the beginning of the season and he showed that , he’s not gonna sit on the bench and accept defeat.
2.RVP should receive the ball more. He is capable of scoring any time , so we have to deliver the ball to him more often.
    3. As Scott mentioned , if we relying that much on Scholes, how on earth Fergie didn’t sort our midfield problems out?! we really missed a great deal in Dembele
    4. All the teams in EPL scores more than Man utd from corners . We have had this problem since more than i can remember and today we know more ,how crucial a corner kick can be.We have to work on corners and set pieces or let RvP take care of it , and in that we’re gonna lose a good header of ball in box.
    5. This is the forth Game in row (Hannover the first), when we went first down.We HAVE to defend better.

  64. dasilvatwins says:

@tk99 read abit in giggsys autobiography that they have never worked on corners as the manager felt like he was never needed as other aspects of the game are much much more important. but i get your point 100%

  65. Raizzen says:

Fickle fickly fans. Now Welbeck isn’t United quality..

  66. Joffrey Barathron says:

Parryheid, While the likes of Southampton and Everton have targeted the full back positions not every team will use the same tactics because not every team has the players to do it. When fit I’d rather see Smalling or Jones playing than Rafael, I’ve never been a fan of his to be honest, too much of a liability and constantly caught ball watching. Once our defenders are back fit and hopefully stay fit we will start to see improved defensive displays. Kagawa and Van Persie are excellent additions and makes our squad look a lot stronger than last season already. I genuinely think we have realistic ambitions of winning the title back of City. They themselves have looked vulnerable at the back so far. The champions league can be a bit of a lottery but for me gaining back the title has to be the priority and if we don’t clinch it we’ll be bloody close.

  67. Proverb says:

I can’t believe no one has mentioned tony V7
He was constantly beating their left back
He’s the stand out performer for me
    By far
Scholes had an impact, but always looked up to the right wing and its the only position which was constantly in action and troubling the saints the whole game
Its a shame he didn’t consistently pick the right cross
But he always managed to get behind the saints on that right wing
He’s a beast – iMO my man of the match
But not taking anything away from the clinical Robin

  68. Costas says:

Yeah, where was Anderson? With the latest paranoia that injuries should be kept a secret, I think it’s obvious what happened.

  69. gazzer says:

Yes tony v is looking great too. he looks as if he didnt sit around the pool smoking cigarettes.
one other thing – I know that Rafael sometimes gets caught ball watching, I hope he gets that out of his game over time. However, his tackling is immense, he pushes forward like no other fullback (just contrast him with Glen Johnson), he can be a hard player when he needs to, and HE LOVES THE GAME!! On balance, I’d take him in a heartbeat.
I’ll give Evra a lot of slack too – you have to love his heart, and he pushes forward a lot also. Even more than Ashley Cole. I want people like that on my team.

  70. Busby babes says:

See ronaldo does’nt appear happy in madrid judging by is statement tonite, couple of days to late unfortunately ron

  71. NBI Red Onion says:

Dembele scored a damn lovely goal for Spurs, fantastic quick strong footwork. Well forget it, that one is gone, unless we pay £30mn to Spurs on last day of transfer window.

  72. parryheid says:

    jeffroy Barathron

I don’t have a problem with the defence as stated nor our frontline,I and many others know our midfield are incapable of protecting our defenders nor come to that able to supply the ammunition to our very capable attack. They are not good enough to resist teams that go at them and every manager is aware and will exploit that. The two players you mention are not full backs as has been proved on a number of occasions already,I really don’t see any way we can maintain a challenge for the title as we have missed the boat on the main position, it was imperative we strengthened ie midfield I hope you are right but very much doubt it.

  73. emmy says:

can any of carrick or cleverly play 4 marid, barca, juve, mancity, chelsea,or bayern?all these teams in summer strenghtned in midfield xpt man-u.fergie is biased towards english players.lets sign moutinho and witsel

  74. jboy3533 says:

Scott The Red, you’re on point with your review of this match, I however feel you missed something. Our gaffer formation/tactics wasn’t working and he left it late in switching back to the 4-4-2 which we normally excel in. He started the match with no one of the left side of midfiled (I think Welbeck was suppose to be there ) and Southampton exploited that space twice. Kagawa enjoys playing off the main striker but his space kept getting impeded by Welbeck and Cleverly, two players looking unsure of themselves in the weird formation that Sir Alex had deployed. Even more frustrating with this formation was United playing way too narrow.

Once we put on Nani on the left, things were more open and Scholes had the space that Kagawa didn’t to pull the strings. Granted our midfielders were poor but I fully suspect once a formation is picked and stuck too and players become more settled in a defined role Man U will perform better. I just hope the weird formation (when we have the players available)stops

  75. g-man says:

Overrun in midfield again. If we can see it Fergie must too.

  76. Jrdonl says:

Rvp was difference…had what iffs..we not signed him ve we wud hav lost 2-1(wayne scores penalty) and berba missing all half chances

  77. MyTer says:

Guys im just disappointed with our team performance yesterday (*before scholes come in)…

it’s not like united that i knew of…slow tempo passing…no desire to win the ball back…no passion as united…

scholes already 38…tom and ando should step up now so that scholes can retired peacefully…

  78. g-man says:

Is Evra play LB or LW? Take a look at the video at 66th minute when Lambert breaks through and nearly scores. Rio and Vidic are the only ones back.

  79. Yoda says:

“As someone said to me, you can take the player out of Arsenal, but you can’t take the Arsenal out of a player”. It wasn’t Spooky that told you that was it?

  80. nag says:

1st of all this game was fittingly fergie’s 1000th league match….it had all fd components of fergie’s teams…poor 1st half…late sub….improvement…fergie time winner.
2nd of all…by now fergie should have realized that d carrick cleverly combination does not work…we saw in d 1st game n end of last season…in europa league…it has to be scholes n carrick or ando n cleverly….i hope ando n cleverly r given more chance as they bring on d attacking footballl which is attractive….scholes n carrick is very assured partnership which is good enough for most of d teams in epl…but for fast attacking teams in europe n big guns in epl….cleverly n ando r better…last season community sheild….8-2 ars….3-1 chelsea…even spurs…
3rd…i think fergie got it right by dropping ddg….he may have had g8 saves but d defence is very shaky with him behind…always errors…i guess lindergaad should be given a run…we will see who is better ‘for united’…not as a keeper…..my money is on lindergaad as he looks more assured n is more passionate abt playing 4 utd than ddg…
finally rvp is true class n pulling us out of that mess shows how much talent he has…once we start scoring from other players such as rooney n chicha n welbz…even kagawa….then we will able to handle any situation…..
a note to nani’s corner which beat d 1st defender…it was good to see him back…..nani maybe inconsistant…but he has d ability to produce magic at d rarest moments….at that moment he is d best player

  81. sam says:

    1. United were sloppy
    2. There wasnt enough movement
    3. Evra needs to be replaced
    4. Stop playing Welbeck at left wing
    5. Dont shift Kagawa out wide
    6. Both of above caused a lack of shape
    7. United players looked lazy too many times
    8. Never let RvP take a pen like that again
    We were lucky to win.

  82. The One says:

I’m really sick and tired of all this moaning and all these armchair managers who come on here and say we should sign this or that player, or we have missed out on this or that player, or SAF should play this or that player, or he should drop this or that player. The man has manager Man United for 28 years now, won loads of trophies and yet some of you clowns think you know better!!!

I know you clowns are going to say you’re entitled to your opinions, right?

Well, let me point this out; an opinion is a point of view that is well considered, based on the balance of all evidence, carefully weighed or analysed and not something borne out of highly charged emotions, which is the case with many a post here!!

Anyway, I thought the header at the end was really excellent, for me, even better than his 1st goal. I’m quite happy with the points, early season yet, improve we def will!!

  83. vincentvega says:

Carrick needs to pass the ball FORWARD. The main goal of the game is to create goal at the opponent’s end. It’s forward of the team, not behind, not on the side. If he can’t run with the ball, then PASS IT FORWARD.

  84. Gopher Brown says:

In his defence, although he didn’t play well, Evra didn’t get much help from Welbeck or the midfielders and had to deal with Schneiderlin and Fox on his own and the majority of Southampton’s attacks were coming down our left. Rafa at least had the defensively competent Valencia in front of him to help out, but playing a striker as a left winger isn’t going to help us defensively. Nani and Young do at least make attempts to help Evra out when they play there.

  85. Gopher Brown says:

I meant Clyne, rather than Fox.

  86. aristotle says:

well done rvp. it’s a pity that cedars is longer here to celebrate with us.

  87. MancunianRed68 says:

We never start the season well no idea why but we dont, we never play good football and we never look convincing, but last season we would of lost/drawn that game but thankfully with Van Persie in our team we have that extra bit of quality. Kagawa will be vital for us in my opinion didnt have a great game yesterday but it was on his third game and he doesnt look out of place.

Will be great to have Rooney back but after his whole transfer request I think he’s a cunt and im so slag we’ve got Van Persie to put wayne in his place. Waynes a great player, Robin is a world class player.

  88. Northernstar says:

You do have normal , logic reactions after the game at Southampton , i guess we looked the same as we did at Everton… Fergie tried to copy Barcelona’s tiki-taka.. but it doesn’t fit … The players are not midgets kickin the ball sideways and back .. Our squad is built for offensive , wing play and straight to the goal ! We killed time with possesion .. as we did at Everton’s .. And if we struggle against Soton, how will it be against City , Chelsea , or Barcelona? Where are those 8-2 , 5-0 , 5-2 , 7-1 we love United for ?
