1. We’re there. Third European Cup final in four years. When you consider that before 1999, we had only played in one European Cup final in our club’s entire history, this really is an incredible achievement. Congratulations to the lads.
2. That said, today doesn’t feel like the morning after the victory over Barcelona in 2008 and Arsenal in 2009. The nerves before those games were massive and the jubilation that followed was immense. Maybe that’s because we were very confident of progressing after the 2-0 victory in the first leg or maybe because Schalke doesn’t evoke the same emotions as Barcelona or Arsenal. It is a strange feeling today, just like it was whilst watching the majority of the game yesterday, to know that we’ll be at Wembley again in a few weeks time.
3. That said, ahead of kick-off I was feeling a bit nervous. You always have to trust the manager but there was the feeling he had taken a big gamble in order to keep us fresh for the Chelsea game. It was a gamble I supported as winning the 19th title has to take priority as far as I’m concerned, but I wondered whether we needed both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand rested. It felt as though finally we had a big game that we could be relaxed about and enjoy but we had that composure taken away when the team was announced, with 90 minutes of nerves to endure.
3. Turns out, it was a big fuss over nothing. Raul may have scored more games in the Champions League than any other player ever, but Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling should be proud of the way they played. That’s not to say Schalke were throwing everything at them but the nerves easily could have got the better of our young defenders, yet they managed to stay clam and get the job done. The confidence they must have right now will be amazing and I’m very pleased for them both.
4. When considering the things you never thought you’d say at the football, “Anderson is on a hattrick!” probably ranks highly. In the first half he had a shot from just outside the box and, like usually, he scuffed it and it was no threat. For all the strengths he has and possible potential, shooting just doesn’t seem to be something he ever gets right. His first goal came after a great run from Nani. Ando’s first shot was blocked but he got up, turned, and finished well. Neuer will probably think he should have done better but full credit to Anderson for moving so quickly. His second goal followed some lovely passing from Antonio Valencia and Dimitar Berbatov, with the Bulgarian timing his run perfectly to collect the ball perfectly, before putting it on a plate for Anderson. Well done lad.
5. Whilst Valencia’s crossing has yet reached the standards of last season, I can’t get enough of his runs down the wing and his strength to block off opponents. When people challenge him for the ball they seem to just bounce off him. Delighted for him to score the opening goal and marks what has been a successful come back to an injury which could have put him out for the season, or worse.
6. For all the criticism that Darron Gibson gets, credit where it’s due, the lad had a good game. Early in the first half he made a few tackles, beat a few players, passed to players in red, but then looked to have his game cut short after going down. The reaction of the players suggested that he had really hurt himself and the stretcher coming on seemed to confirm that. But he dragged himself off, trotted off the pitch, and was ready to come back on. He didn’t need the goal for people to say he had a good game, but that was a nice added bonus, as Neuer couldn’t get to grips with Gibson’s shot. It was Valencia who set up and he hit the ball well. All you can ask is that players hit the target because you never know what will come of it, so it was nice of the German number 1 to help us out.
7. After letting the team and fans down with his moment of madness at Wembley a few weeks ago, it was good to see Paul Scholes put in a decent shift. Some of his passing is incredible. There were a couple of occasions where he smacked the ball 40 yards in to the path of a charging winger which left me with my jaw wide open. How does he do it? How many other players are there in the world who could pick and pass and execute it the way he does? A touch of class and possible shout for the starting line-up against Barcelona.
8. Whilst I don’t see Pep Guardiola as the type to get scared, particularly when considering the quality of his own side, I do imagine he is a little apprehensive to see what our best team can do in Europe after watching our second string win a European Cup semi-final so easily. The manager has faith in his players and I was delighted to see them repay that last night. Great performances, great result.

Dimitar Berbatov, I am seriously in awe of you my Bulgarian God.
Berbatov’s movement for Ando’s second was sublime – left the defender for dead and plenty of strikers who have been out of favour would have smashed a shot from a poor angle but he was unselfish as he has been on quite a few occasions this season. People say he had a quiet game, but he did well in a role that is far from his favourite. I’d be absolutely gutted if he was sold in the summer, even if Rooney/Hernandez seems to be the first choice pair at present. Long live Berba!
And to echo a point Rio Ferdinand made, if that Gibbo > Valencia pass had been Iniesta > Messi people would have been creaming themselves for weeks. I really hope Fergie has learned from that 09 performance (as well as Madrid’s failed attempts in the past couple of weeks).

One sadness last night. There was Owen Hargreaves sitting high up there in the stand with his team-mates which reminds one of how much we have missed him, and how much he’s missed out on. I would love it if he somehow got fit enough to at least get on the bench for the Final. But then there are an awful lot of players I want involved in the final, players who’ve done their bit in a season when the values of team-work and squad loyalty have achieved so much in the face of widespread derision and even abuse. I felt that Berbatov did well…just dragging 2 Schalke defenders aside to handle 1 Berbatov frees up the space for the other players to shine, I feel, and that’s why Anderson could score his first, because Berbatov was so busy taking away the defenders out of position.
And especially with a German team that somehow doesn’t know how to tackle all that well, he’s definitely going to give you problems.
The only cloud over the result as far as I am concerned is that Schalke are complete and total shite. They clearly rode their luck, hard, to get where they got, and they presented no challenge over the two legs. You can only play the teams in front of you I guess, but it was disappointing to simply roll over a bunch of part-timers rather than meet a proper team so late in the competition.
We go into the match with Barcelona as huge underdogs, which is a nice change. Any team can beat any other, of course, but I’m trying to be realistic with my expectations. Barca are a very good side who have carte blanche to cheat. I’m not sure how you beat that.

I am one of those who has doubts about Gibson, but last night was his best game ever in a United shirt. That pass to Valencia, precise and perfectly weighted, that was top drawer. He put himself about last night, especially in the first half. In the past he has tended to shirk his defensive duties but last night he had ‘a bee in his bonnet’. I don’t agree with the abuse he received over twitter (that is just fukt up) but it has provoked a positive response, and that points to strong character.

In other words, as long as Ando was behind the ball at the time of passing from Berba, he was not offside.

Yesterday was just the 3rd time in 30 games that Carrick didn’t start a knock out game in the Ch.League. Only Edwin has a better record than that. And when you consider that Carrick missed 2 of those games out of necessity (Milan last year due to a ban and Schalke yesterday because he was rested), it just goes to show how valuable he has been to Fergie’s European plans.
A bit sad that Berba didn’t end his long European goal drought yesterday. He has one more chance to do it. And it could be his last chance for us…Wouldn’t it be fitting though?

The main positives I took from this game where:
1) Not many teams could win a CL semi-final 4-1 against a team that beat the Champions, Lyon and Valencia in this competition whilst fielding a team including the likes of Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson(who I’ll come to later). However, we did this last night, not only that but we did it convincingly too.
2) My GOD! Watching Valencia last night makes me wonder how far clear would we be at the top if he was fit all year. He’s like a maraudering panther down that right side, try as they might, they just cant knock him off the ball, nevermind keep up with him.
3) Jonny “Suicide Pass” Evans and Darron Gibson. It’s about bloody time both of you two showed just why Fergie has so much faith in you. I was beginning to question him(big mistake). Evans and Smalling together looked like a solid outfit last night and I think thats because they were given responsibility and rose to the occasion. Like when Vidic and Ferdinand kept getting injured two years ago and Jonny Evans stepped up to the plate because he HAD to, when he plays normally he knows its only so they can rest or its a nothing game. Well done him. Solid as a, well not quite as solid as a rock, more like a candle. As for Darron “SHHOOOOOOOOOT” Gibson, thats the best performance I’ve seen him give in a United shirt. He must like playng against Germans because he was good against Bayern last year. Keep it up.

If anybody had suggested we’d be in the champions league final and in our current situation at the top of the league, i would have snatched at the chance to be in that position.

Like I said, I take back calling that fella a twat even tho he’s justified the label today. I should have simply suggested we judge Bebe on what he’s done in his Debut season before slagging him off. I just didn’t have time to debate with the UEFA second leg on.
Weeks after we signed Bebe he debuted for U21 Portugal and lost v England. He scored in the next competitive game and won, which is quite similar to what Hernandez did after signing last summer remember? True, he didn’t set the world alight for his first two appearances in United’s first team, but they were both very late substitutions. More importantly he DID score in his first Starting Debut in our next game. The next game after that he scored again, this time away in Europe coming off the bench. So within 3 months of signing Bebe produced 1 international goal and 2 in a United shirt with hardly any playing time. Not bad for a foreign Kid with no training or English who just turned 20. After that Champions League goal he returned to the Reserves for only his second game there, and did this.

So personally, all I’ve seen is promise from Bebe, and if he works hard to smooth out the rough edges imo he’ll achieve it.
