The FA have charged Rafael da Silva for his reaction to the second yellow card Mike Dean showed him in our 0-0 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
This was the third time we’ve seen such an explosive reaction from our little Brazilian. The first game from the bench after United went 2-1 up against Spurs last season. He had been at fault for their equalising goal and a minute after he was taken off, Nani put United back ahead. He was wild in celebrationg. The second occasions was during the derby when he squared up to the Argie troll and got in his face, showing the more vocal side to our terrier of a defender.
After the game on Sunday, even Spurs manager Harry Redknapp conceded it was a poor decision.
“He was just running and he has clipped Benoît’s heels,” he said. “He has not broken his stride and stuck a leg out, saying ‘I’ll trip him’. He was trying to get out of the way.”
But that doesn’t excuse Rafael’s overreaction. This was the second time in a year that Dean had wrongly punished Rafael, the first coming in the League Cup semi-final when he awarded a penalty against United for a foul from Rafael on Craig Bellamy which took place outside of the area. Regardless, if you get in a referee’s face and scream “WHY?” at him, you’re likely to be punished, if you’re a little foreign boy and not Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard or John Terry. In fact, I’m pretty sure Rooney said much worse to Dean and was already on a yellow.
But what happens to referee Mike Dean now? The only reason why Rafael reacted was because Dean made a dreadful decision which could have cost United the game. Is there any punishment for him? Or will we see him back in action in the Premiership next weekend?

Man Utd News 24/7

It’s hard to judge this kind of moments. The player is still young and being this immense doesn’t mean he is still learning his trade and he will become wiser as the time goes on. I think Fergie will speak with him, they will have a good laugh about it and we will move on just like Fergie isn’t commenting referees decisions these days. Sometimes it’s not necessary to piss against the wind. We will figure out how to have the last laugh. But the line mentioning Gerrard, Terry and Rooney is spot on. Fucking cowards the FA.
*doesn’t mean he _isn’t_ still learning his trade
It was foolish on Raphaels part to get himself into that situation. We benefited in the cup match when the berb went down easy. A case of Swings and roundabouts.
Just an attempt to derail United by the authorities a normal yearly thing. They were successful last year and think lightning will strike twice by targeting our strongest point ie our defence, wouldn’t worry about it.
Mike Dean will officiate this weekend as a reward for his imcompetence. I’m not surprised the FA handed out further punishment, it is a given after all. Do we know how many games he will be suspended for after this charge?
Singled out for no apparent reason apart from being a kid learning in the game
And specifically for not being English/white and not being a media darling
Fucking disgrace but why should we be bothered – it only comes a surprise when when we don’t know any better
But that’s the point – we do know better
mike dean shud retire…FACT!
Am I being stupid or can we not appeal against the sending off? It was Blatantly NOT a sending off. City successfully overturned a red card for Zabaletta, why do we not do the same?
He should have been sent off for showing his studs ups on Palacios in the first instance. Didnt Gerrard get sent off for a similar thing last week?? Saying that didnt Rafael do it against Liverpool and got away with it then.
I know you are going to drag up some incident that happens years ago, as that is what United fans do after they get a bad decision against them, but save your breath.
Fergie is just pissed that he didn’t take him off earlier. The kid needs to grow up and keep his mouth shut
Yeah raf is getting better and better.
that latino temperment(flair) needs a few tweaks. . . .
Once he starts using it at the right times he’ll be a true united legend . . . . .
The truth is we have a world class player on our hands
And we will protect him so that he fulfils his ambition
What happened to him yesterday was a disgrace – this Rafael has come on leaps and bounds from last seasons Rafael.
And people are scared of him – scared of a kid outplaying them – period
To Rafael ; Next time you are wrongfully sent off, bow down and kiss the ref’s feet mate, then show us the message on your under shirt of how much you respect the FA……
Ban them all. Dean, the little foreign fella and the pug ugly untamed snarling half wit Rooooney. They all brought the the game into disrepute yesterday. Luckily for Rooooney its hard to ascertain what he actually said to Dean, it looked like he was just making a primitive, troglodyte like, steamy grunting noise at him.
let rafael have his fines, its a learning curve for the boy..
Fabio, O’Shea and Wes Brown played for the reserves today, so they can fill in.
@MG – absolutely my friend. Fergie will do everything possible to protect him like he did with Ronaldo and Rooney. And the day when Rafael will say a big thanks to the mighty will surely come.
@ mikekelly12
nah mate cant appeal two yellow’s , stupid rule.
But they must be able to appeal the improper conduct charge
Can only appeal straight reds, not yellows, another daft rule but a rule nonetheless.
BerbaGod that is exactly the 2 thoughts I had. It will probably be us 2 against the rest.
Frank.
Just like your on loan player Bellamy, Yeah.
So referees have every chance of getting rid of the players with the help of yellows and not being punished. Good stuff.
Mike dean is a racist coward!
frank be a dear and give adam
Time to bring big bad mean old Wes Brown back into he fold. The FA = clueless. You take off your shirt, to celebrate, you get booked. The FA have their priorities all wrong.
@parryheid
Never hit me that ‘frank’ was a bitter, thought he was just being sarcastic…. Never thought they were smart enough
Dean’s a cunt and shit ref
Raphael and Rooney need to learn to show less rage, it can harm the campaign
Nani needs to stop throwing a fit when he’s fouled
there’s my 3 penneth
If he gets suspended just give him Fabio’s shirt to wear
Willie
Where I come from, you take off your shirt its time for sex! Not sure who wrote those dumb FA rules! lol
Referees are protected by 3 metre thick cotton wool. Poor decision and its not like it the first poor decision made by a ref, its up to the kid to behave himself whether he likes the decision or not. Hats off to Rio yesterday for clipping his ear as well when he was simulating pulling out a yellow card trying to get Palacios booked, no room for that in our English game.
Jaandsdad
Then we’ll be Absolutely Fabioless.
“In fact, I’m pretty sure Rooney said much worse to Dean and was already on a yellow.”
Rooney was not on a yellow. He got his yellow card because of his reaction over Rafael’s red card.
Dean is a money-grabbing c*nt!
Fergie, there’s an easy solution to this. Give him Fabio’s shirt; no one will notice. Just make sure Fabio sits in the stands looking really pissed off.
CeadrsDevil – lol.
Cedars Devil.
Cant say he is for def just the kind of gobbledegook I associate with them could even be a scouser.
Spurs fan here. While I agree the 2nd yellow was harsh, there’s no denying it was a foul. As such it’s a judgment call as to whether it’s worthy of a card. Dean thought it was, so Rafael goes. Nothing will happen to Dean partly because of Rafeal’s reaction. The FA won’t punish Dean because that would make it seem like Rafael was justified in blowing his top.
Anyway, it was a good match in general and a draw probably fair.
We’ve got his fookin’ twin!
Lefty – Erm, Gerrard was two footed in the air and didn’t win the ball. Rafael was one-footed and did win the ball. Do you watch a lot of football?
@ssg – there is no denying mister Dean was craving for the red card to be taken out out of his pocket and he found the easy target just like the FA did.
Exactly. I just posted my thought on the matter on Daily Mail.
I don’t think this is about them against us kinda thing. It’s just simply an honest but dreadful mistake. But if Mike Dean is forgiven based on the human-is-prone-with-mistakes type of theory, then they shouldn’t have overlooked the reason why he reacted that way. Which was due to him being sent off FOR nothing.
They should not overlook this. We lost the league title due to a few reasons, most of them are ours to blame, but don’t forget we lost a few points from both Chelsea games due to dreadful decisions from the referee.
@TheRadLegion – be sure Dean wanted to take action. It’s a sign of a poor referee because the wise referee would have never given the card for that.
@Frank
I remember the advert that said “Need help, talk to Frank”.
Well if you’re him, we’re all fucked cos you talk a load of bollocks!
Now, be a nice chap and fuck off!
I concur, can you imagine Saint Stevie getting charged by the FA for the same reaction? Not a chance!
@Corea
@TheRadLegion
Maybe, but how would you prove Dean was looking to give a red? If the defense is Rafael blew up because the yellow was undeserved and Dean was looking to make a splash, I don’t think an appeal will have much luck.
It’s interesting what the club will do with Rafael response to the charge. If they concur there will be a fine if go against it will most certainly be a match ban.
Mike Dean will stip refereeing the minute he sends off Rafael more times than David Elleray sent off Roy Keane.
C-U-N-T
Gerrard also told Howard Webb to fuck off last week. Not to mention the 20 times Wayne told Graham Poll to fuck off at Highbury one time…
Mike Dean is shit…
Costas
I guess you are referring to the 99 FA semi sending off by our darling Elleray?
Judging by recent red cards for ‘feet off the ground’ tackles Rafael was fortunate to even be on the pitch by then – his first card could easily have been red not yellow.
Equally, he could (should) have been booked for brandishing a card at the ref trying to get one of the Spurs players booked as well so I don’t think he can complain too much.
And the sooner players get red cards for screaming and shouting right in a referees face the better the game will be. Why on earth should a ref have to put up with that? Pity the FA don’t do a retrospective on Rooney’s latest outburst.
I am a City supporter and I watched the game with mixed feelings, my heart wanting United to lose, my brain telling me that a draw was the best result for us. Anyway I thought it was a terrific game, especially in the first half. If United go on to win the title, they will owe a big debt to the two giants at the centre of their defense who are both having terrific seasons.
Rafael is a fantastic prospect especially as an offensive player but I believe still a bit of a liability defensively tending to give away too many fouls. He was of course very unlucky to receive a second yellow when he did but that does not excuse the way he reacted. Also in an earlier incident, having already been rightly booked himself, he tried to get a Spurs player booked gesticulating persistently to the ref – a second yellow could easily have resulted. He could do a lot worse than trying to follow the example of Ryan Giggs, a truly fantastic player universally admired both for his skill and behavior
@CedarsDevil
Yeah, among others. I think it must have been 3-4 times he sent Roy off.
We can give all the excuses we want.but in the end he was wrong.he should have just walked out of the pitch or appeal mildly.not go all up in the refs face.thats dumb, as much as i love him its good he gets punished so that he could learn.he is still too young to have such an attitude.a behaviour like that is meant for shitty.not manchester united
Roy didn’t give him much option, most of the times lol. Mike Dean has had something against United for a few years now. He give Hull a dodgy penalty at OT in the 4 3 game. SAF confronted him on the pitch after the game, to which the FSW referred to in his famous FACT speech.
As a Spurs fan you will obviously want to win a game. On Sunday I thought the ref almost spoiled a great game. The first yellow was fair enough but the sending off was a joke. You could see his run was never changed there was no looking as our full-back. I just think this ref is a complete pratt. It’s just a shame players get ripped afterwards by video and the ref’s get away with it.
Pavlosn – You cant be a city fan you talk sense.
Im not defending his simulation of a card here but what no ones seems to consider when bringing this up is that fact that his english is not so good so he gestured it whereas five minutes earlier bale and van der vaart were telling the ref to send him off which unless im mistaken is the same offence.
Referee sent a Man U player off? Well, he’ll be taken out and shot, presumably.
Cracker.
Stratty – Yeh your right the league is fixed and all refs support man u but still cost them 20 points a season to hide it! Complex theory eh!
Nah, Rafa will just shoot his load on him.
Don’t feel to picked on. Vidic pulled Van de Vaart off his feet in the box by his shirt. No penalty.
Tell you what lets overturn the red card and give spurs their penalty. Happy then?
@Collyhurst Red
No I dont.
Although you sound like one of those impressionable people adverts are aimed at.
I wonder if Rafael will play at the weekend in a Fabio shirt!
Mike Dean’s a cunt. He looks like Jasper Carrot, and he fucking referees like him!
Love Rafael’s agression and passion – pity one or two others didn’t have the same fire in their belly.
rooney did at one point said to dean fuck off when the ball went out.
It is clear that old farts at FA do not want United to win the league, and it seems that hat put the wheel in motion to try and prevent that.
What has happened to the English sense of fair play!!!!!!
Two words – Gary Neville
Lol @ hard done to Man United right backs and their fans with ever so short memories
@bchilds
Haha, if I had a euro for everytime I heard that today! You know it will happen.
It was a 50-50 decision to give Rafa a second yellow. What I don´t like is United players starting to scream and try and talk sence to ref, I haven´t seen one single decision where the ref change his mind after a loudly disscusion with Rooney, Rio or anyone. Just take it and get on with the job!
We are soo much better then the refs, the FA and all other teams so it shouldn´t bother us, just get on winning games 11 men or 10, I don´t really care!
Hopefully Brown takes his chance now and becomes the worldclass player he was 3-4 years ago.
@Pavslovn……what??? Are u for real? I can send some of my guys to protect u from the mob at the wastelands that now got a price on your shady behind.
Mike Dean has always been a self promoting patronising twat of a ref.
Just his mannerisms in the booking of players is beyond belief the way he waves these bloody cards right under players noses “Everybody watch me and the power I have to ridicule these multi-millionaire superstars” – no understanding of the game, the players or even how the game affects the players mental and physical condition during a match.
If I had been Rooney or Fletch when this condescending cunt put his finger to his lips like a fucking primary school teacher I would have certainly gone for a season long ban!
Yeah, sometimes i also wonder if me using the horn while driving signaling to the idiots who don’t have a clue how to behave themselves on the road or don’t want to is the right thing to do.
Mum who sits near is always nervous at me but i think i am entitled to point out that those people are some cheeky bastards.
I don’t think many understand what driving the car at my place is about =)
Mike Dean is a truely terrible referee…I would NEVER get bored of punching his horrible weasel-like face
There is no point bitching about Mike Dean. It makes you look like ryan babel and paul dalglish, he’s a ref doing his job.
Rafael could easily have been sent off for the first booking. You get sent off for that sort of tackle in the champions league and he has to stop doing it. Asking for another player being booked is an automatic yellow card that is never given. And whether he meant it or not, he was breaking up an attack with a trip, so you can’t argue with that.
I can only assume that Ferguson murdered him after the game because he had just been saying that he had cut that sort of stupidity out of his game. And in asking for the yellow card he was doing the thing that ferguson complained about when the Bayern players did it, and he made a fool of himself talking about “The germans”.
Rafael is a fantastic prospect, but hopefully this is going to teach him not to be a fool, and if he learns now, he’ll never get sent off like against Bayern again. this will make him an even better player. If Referees had cracked down on Wayne early on in his career, he wouldn’t be running around wasting his time shouting at referees, and wouldn’t be losing focus.
That refs don’t do it to terry and gerrard and the like means that they grew up to be arseholes who have become liabilities to their team. But if they stamp down on our players, then they will learn. it’s good in the long run.
He who holds the whistle, not us, decides matters on the field as he sees it. In all fairness, one should trust the judgement of the referee and continue to trust in his honesty and sense of fair play.
let’s look the positive of this. We have Rafael playing for us for 10 years and more.. Let he learn it the hard way on how to behave better on the pitch. This is a good time for the lesson – we are on top, two games in hand, and not for a Cup competition when we need him the most.
Who ever the ref is, he should not have done that. But I expect more class from a United player. So either we miss him now for a bit longer period, or many times more in the future.
Good thinking, your cow IS the best!
Dean’s as big a cunt as Teryy.
The last time we lost a match, was the Bayern match where we had Rafael sent off. This time, Rafael was sent off again but we didnt lose, so it’s an improvement. But do you want to be able to brag that the next time Rafael got sent off, we will win? I just hope he does not get sent off unnecessarily next time.
Even the first booking was stupid in my opinion. Rafael clearly lost the ball because he pushed the ball too far in front of him while dribbling. Palacios didnt even have to take tackle him for the ball, but Rafael lifted his leg too high. His determination is good, but it was reckless. Even at that point i was fuming because that immediately reminded me of the Bayern match, i was afraid he well get sent off again. And guess what? Dejavu.
The only reason why i am able to hold back my frustration, because it is Rafael. If that was Rooney, or Fletcher, any other experienced player, I would hate him for three days.
Dean was wrong. No getting around that. But still, Rafael needs to learn that it’s not just about him, it’s about the team too. This latest incident is only one of several. It does the team no good for a player to pick up cards, suspensions, or whatever, just because he’s a hot-head. The job of a defender is perilous enough already. They often have to take risks with desperate tackles and whatever. If his temper tantrums get him sent off in an important match, and/or then suspended for a big game, then the whole team suffers. It does no use to say “but he was right, the ref was wrong”. Rafael is quickly developing into one of the best right fullbacks in the world — he isn’t there yet, but his progress this season alone has been astonishing, and, based on his current trajectory, he’s headed right for the top. But he’s no use to us if he’s not on the field.
The entire RESPECT thing is complete bollocks without installing some meritocracy based system for judging ref’s performances. And it has to be transparent – visible to clubs, players and fans. How do you expect players to respect refs who are just fucking incompetent? Respect what -blind authority? You expect today’s superstars to take that – really? Go climb a tree.
The only way refs will get respect is by doing a good job, and by knowing that there is a fair and transparent system to take care of mistakes – instead of which you have stupid rules like “no appeal for two yellows”. If there was a fair system, the second yellow would have been waived off on appeal, but Rafael would have been punished for his reaction, a fine or a one match ban.
@MyCowIsThe Best: Is that what u do the bulls??? hate them for 3 days? lol
how ya doing mate?
Wes Brown and O’Shea played the full game against bury yesterday ,the 8-0 win.
So, one of then will be playing this weekend as right back.
Scholes played full hour and Obertan the 3 goal hero is sure to play some role this weekend.
And another youngster called Marnick ,belgian defender ,can also play the wings scored.
He is someone to watch out for ,quality kid. It seems Fergie told his dad ,your kid is the best I have seen in a while.
Took that with a pinch of salt but now seeing him score on his debut while playing as a defender and continue to do well ,seems we have someone special here to watch.
over here in oz in the AFL(australias fucking looney) if the ref(umpire here) has a fucked game with all that sort of nonesense he gets dropped like a player would for a shite game. theyr a pack of wankers also but at least it keeps the cunts on there toes. love the idea from befor, get raph to stick on fabios shirt ha ha, classic! both lads r qulity but both need there hands chopping off.
Mike Dean had an excellent game, perhaps the most objectively reasoned performance by a top official i have seen in a long time. He spoke clearly and wisely to players from early on and got all the decisions right. (Witness him having words with Vidic and Crouch at the first corner, clearly lip-readable: “I’m not having any of that in this match”).
Rafael could’ve seen red for his lunge at palacios but the ref spoke firmly to him and warned him that if he stepped out of line again, he’d walk. He got away with another couple of niggles before his trip on BAE, which may or may not have been accidental but which, nevertheless, denied spurs an opportunity to advance into a very promising position, meriting a yellow card. His reaction to the 2nd yellow deserved at least another yellow, and Rooney was lucky he didn’t see direct red for his foul-mouthed tirade. Rafael was also a very lucky boy not to get a 2nd yellow earlier when he jumped up brandishing an imaginary one at the ref for palacios.
There were some decisions a partisan from either side could question (not seeing the penno-worthy shirt pulling from vidic, though he was blind-sided), but on reflection I don’t think an objective observer could honestly say Mike Dean put a foot wrong yesterday. Full marks to him.
Dave Malaysia – Yeah have seen marnick on a few occasions and the kid looks excellent at both defence and going forward.
He didn’t deserve to get sent off but he did deserve to get an extended ban for over reacting. I remember when Fletcher got sent off in the semi finals of champions league although he had got the ball he just got up and left the pitch it was an injustice but he didn’t go shouting at the referee. Rafael will learn from his mistakes.
MIKE DEAN TOOK THE EASY OPTION TO APPEASE THE ANTI-MAN UTD AGENDA THIS COUNTRY HAS.
dude.. rooney wasnt already ona yellow
@Dave Malaysia haha if i get mad on any of our players, i will be talking about him non-stop for three days, bashing him all over the internet. Actually the number of days depends on how bad he played.. but after i got over with my rage, i will fall in love with our players again.
But several veteran fans have taught me valuable lessons here and on RoM forum – like Scott, Giles, GHTT, denton davey to name a few – that is however bad the day is, we are still United. Their stories on being a United fan before Fergie era makes me really jealous.. It was like United blood is running through their veins..
