After harassing our player via the media last summer, Ramon Calderon, who was then the Real Madrid president, made an attempt to ‘make friends’ with United. He claimed he never meant to do anything to ‘disturb’ a ‘nice and friendly club’ like United. Do me a fucking favour.
Calderon’s replacement, Florentino Perez, who has shown that being a twat is part of the job description as Real president, has tried the same approach today.
“If one day there is a chance of Ronaldo playing for Real Madrid, that would be an honour for us,” said Perez. “But if I had to choose between the friendship with Manchester United and the signing of Ronaldo, I would choose the friendship. Plus, I have never said that Cristiano will arrive in June. That is an arrogant and false statement. I shall be talking with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and chief executive David Gill to build bridges.”

As far as Perez is concerned,i believe that he is a slick talker.He is not like that buffoon Calderon.I was surprised to hear him say that he wants Ronaldo because usually he is more subtle.That being said,i don’t believe he will sweet talk Fergie into selling.But i also don’t believe things will get as ugly as they did last year.

@King Eric – I actually find it strange we haven’t been linked with Silva. We did after all bid for him last summer only to be told that it would take £38mill to be listened to. So Fergie clearly rates him and with Valencia’s money trouble a fee would surely be no more than £20mill which would be a bargin (and getting one over on Benitez is worth double that

As I’ve regularly posted, I’m don’t agree with Scott’s “anti Ronaldo agenda” but we’re in totally agreement re Real Madrid!! I never want Ronaldo to leave but if and when he does, how good would it be if he joined Barca!!!
Perez’ comments are VERY interesting. He’s creating a separation between his regime and his predecessor, Calderon. I think he also realizes that UTD are going to demand more than 100 million for Ronaldo – plus a share of CR’s “image rights”.
What I don’t understand is why he so publicly stated that an expensive transfer is often the cheapest – and talked about how the income derived from Beckham’s shirt sales paid for his transfer fee almost immediately. Clearly, Ronaldo is the new “face” of football and that’s why his “image rights” are going to make him a much more expensive commodity than the better-looking Kaka. But why did Perez acknowledge this ? It struck me that he was tipping his hand – or else he was letting us know that he’s playing a long game because he can’t afford the payments for now since he seems to want to purchase Ribery and David Villa, too.
Where this saga gets interesting to me is the behind-the-scenes manoeuvring to do with Ronaldo’s next contract. It’s here that the UTD/Nike connection is something of a trump-card for UTD because the amount of money that CR could conceivably make from this is staggering. And, given the old bird-in-hand/bird-in-bush adage, it’s by no means clear that CR would get the same income from Addidas (who work with TheVirus).

The whole issue of ‘image rights” adds a dimension to this that makes the outcome hard to predict. As I a tend to do 99%, I listen to Fergie re Ronaldo. When he says “the boys happy here and wants to stay” I conclude that a lot of what gets said and written is all about future contract negotiation.
My bet is United are working on something “unusual” in Ronaldo’s case and if we can pull it off he’ll be here through the whole prime of his playing days. If not, the amount of money that’s tied up in a player with his talent, flair and image is going drive a deal somwhere else.
I certainly hope not. The greatest club in the world desrves the biggest player in world football, especially as we nurtured him into that position.

I was just reading about ronnie’s supposed pre-contract with rawl and I may have been wrong about him after all, he may be a fucking genius if the story is true (thats a pretty damn big if as well) if they don’t sign him before the end of june they have to give him $26 Million. just for the bullshit of the whole thing.
