Rio: Fergie Listens To Our Opinion… But He Has Last Word

Rio Ferdinand has spoken about the relationship our players have with the manager.

“The manager’s the manager and his word is gospel, but over the years he respects anybody who questions what he does to a certain extent,” said Rio. “A manager who doesn’t allow his players to have an opinion won’t be successful – you need strong characters in the dressing room and United have had that over the years, from Roy Keane to Giggsy and myself. It’s the quality of our manager that he allows you to have an opinion and a say in what happens – but he makes the final decision.”

I think even with Evra lifting the trophy and Rooney becoming a Keano upfront and fletcher been a football genius that when the day comes that the red nev steps away from the jersey and into the suit backstage of the theatre of dreams , which he doesnt see to be that far away, http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/8543875.stm
I can see Rio pulling a double shift when it comes to been England and United captain full time

  2. theboogeyman says:

That’s the way it should be, Rio.

  3. TheRedBaron says:

Its kinda funny that he mentioned himself. Don’t get me wrong, he is a strong character but it seemed like he was blowing his own trumpet. Am I the only one who thinks this way?

  4. theboogeyman says:

TheRedBaron- I thought so too, but then as they say, it’s not bragging if you can back it up.

    Forgot my manners, good morning!

  6. ajopaul says:

Every mention of Keano gives me shrills! There is only one Keano! Aaah.. those were the days..

  7. Patrick says:

Rio has done alot for our club, so i dont really mind him mentioning himself.. @ boogeyman, im pretty sure Rio can back it up

  8. redevil forever says:

rio has a strong character he really must be our first captain and about saf what do you want he’s simply the best.

  9. aig alex is god says:

Rio is a good leader but he should NOT be our captain if he is going to play 20 games a season. Evra or Fletcher would be better choices.I doubt whether he will ever regain his full fitness. Chronic back injury is really bad.

  10. willierednut says:

I think the days of a Roy Keane type captain are gone, they dont make them like that no more. I have to be honest, Rio isn’t vocal enough on the pitch for me at times, maybe he needs to be more assertive when he’s the capo.

Guys, look at this. It seems so serious and they want our backing and supports. It seems serious. Take a look.

  13. willierednut says:

After wazza, fletch certainly is our most important player and im sure the boss has him down as a future captain.

  14. curtis says:

I’m sorry but who the fuck are these red knights?? I hate the glazers as much as anyone but how can we back this lot without any knowledge of how they plan to take us over or even who they are??
all i know it could be a hoax with abrom trying to buy us only to destroy us and sell off all our assets.
we have lowered our debt and increased our profits at a time of global recession, i know its hard to be optimistic as we are potentialy in trouble if we stop being so sucessful but my god backin them red knights would be like jumping out the frying pan into the fire as someone mentioned on another post.
Yes i’d like new ownership that will make us debt free again but we don’t know enough about them.. suposed fans? fuck off why weren’t they interested in buying us before the glazers? from what i gather the all just wealthy not really rich so how will they eventually plan to lower our debts anyway?

this is serious and before we start to back them we must get all our facts in order and understand there busines plan otherwise we could be getting rid of God’s Devil(glazer) for Satan’s Angel(red knights) and be worse off

    LUHG always

Actually captaincy should be of least importance.Keano was one of a kind but United have natural leaders in every departmentwith or without the armband. VDS,Rio,Evra,Fletcher,Giggs, Rooney are all leaders whether they have the armband or not. All lead by example with their performances on the field. As a skipper you dont just have to yell at players but set an example with your own peformance.

  16. kel says:

curtis – Did you read the aritcle? They each paying a little amount of cash. They wont want any return like the Glazer are doing. With fans each paying a bit we can get the club. Isn’t this good? The fans will have share and MUST must be supporting them too. The MUST members have grown to 83000, it shows that many think enough is enough. This way we wont have debt loaded to our club and with more fans paying more money, it will then no debt. We will be able to buy players we want and not lose out to other club and can use those money to build more facilities and stuffs the clubs need and wants. I believe they are serious and sincerely from the way those things progress. I dont want to see the club having to take our money from the revenue to pay off their debt.

    Morning

Not being picky mate but what does “Fergie listens to our OPEN” mean? Opinion?

  18. King Eric says:

    curtis – Spot on pal.

  19. King Eric says:

kel – Mate if you don’t think the “Knights” will want a return then you are deluded my friend.

  20. willierednut says:

    @aig
You could add vidic to that list. Seen that story ghtt, never been sure about veloso but he was brillant in the 2 games against everton.

  21. curtis says:

@ kel, yeah i did mate quite a few of them in the last few days.
and yes it would be nice if we could go that way, if they invested all their own money with help from the fans etc.but mate they will want a return on their investment whether we like it or not not, a problem really as long as its not too much.
but we honestly know too little about them. before we back them i urge the fans to demand to know who they are and to see a business plan on the table. or we could end up like liverpool.
no disrespect but don’t let emotions get the better of you think logically about this for the good of the club.

    Back on topic-
I think I think this is what has made SAF so successful of late in terms of getting the best out of players like park, fletch etc as it has made him become more of a aproachable father figure. Sure his word is always final but i think he is far from the my way or the highway attitude anymore.. maybe it came with age?

  22. sppibsihmkcrkg says:

curtis mate, don’t think it’s just his age, think it’s the way players expect to be treated changing. Remember reading something about stephen ireland i think it was, who said he knew his days at united were numbered when fergie said summat oh no not another irishman. My memories terrible but that’s the gist! Years ago that was just banter, but now people think thats the signal they aren’t wanted. Kids are soft now. Don’t forget going back maybe just 15-20 years when you were a youth player you were scrubbing older players boots, sweeping around the ground, cleaning cars etc. That doesn’t happen anymore and they don’t respond to the shouting and screaming well anymore. They expect to be treated like children and act like little boys. A bollocking now would probably send half of em crying home to mummy and the police would have to investigate! The worlds mad, but thankfully we have strong minded players like fletch who has put up with so much negativity and come out stronger. But the age part is valid as well, don’t think fergie fancies breaking up house parties anymore!

  23. King Eric says:

Was Ireland at United mate? I did not know that I have to say.

  24. King Eric says:

In answer to my own question No he wasn’t.

  25. aig alex is god says:

    @willierednut

Vidic too can be included. Our team has many natural leaders. No wonder Evans looks so comfortable when he plays with Rio or Vidic besides him.

  26. NotoriousRedDevil says:

@ sppibsihmkcrkg – Spot on about that Stephen Ireland story and how soft kids are. Not just in football but life in general. People today get upset way too easily and if you do offend someone the majority don’t even have the fortitude to say to you why you’ve offended them. They go running off and whine to someone else, in a footballers case usually his agent.

  27. curtis says:

    @sppibsihmkcrkg

Spot on, its sad that these old school type of players are a dying breed they could teach the young ones a thing or two

  28. sppibsihmkcrkg says:

king eric, it were shock when i read it but think he were involved in youth team or something similar. Remember reading it either on here or in paper.
