Rio: Scholes Saved Our Season

Manchester United’s most important player in the second half of the season has been Paul Scholes.

Rio Ferdinand has sung the praises of Scholes’ impact since coming out of retirement.

“There are a number of reasons why we’ve done well since the turn of the year,” he told United Review. “There’s no doubt one of them is Paul Scholes. Would we have been in the same position [without him]? It’s impossible to say. It’s great to have him back, though. It’s not just the quality of his football that impresses me but the way he’s adapted physically. He was out of the game for months and yet he’s come straight back into top-level football and he’s hardly looked out of place. At this stage of his career, that’s phenomenal.”

Well played Paul top class, his are big shoes to fill . I wonder who will step up or who we will buy but it has to be done for the start of next season

  2. CedarsDevil says:

But I thought it was an act of desperation was it not?

  3. Jumping Jesus says:

United’s player of the season . No doubt in my mind

  4. keegan4england says:

@ Cedars. Not really an act of desperation, but it isnt great to think that we needed to bring back a player out of retirement to have a shot at the title. 50m was spent last summer and not a penny went on replacing Scholesey.

I see what you mean mate but I guess the boss looked at what he had at the beginning of the season with the likes of Clev, Anderson and may be even Pogba and thought we could manage. Of course Scholes could never be replaced like for like and with Clev’s injuries and Anderson’s indifferent form it simply made sense to get Scholes back, who and for what its worth asked to get back

  7. Marq says:

As much as we love Scholes. We have to move on. We desperately need new blood in the middle of the park. Credit to Scholes for saving our season, but our season is not saved yet, we haven’t won anything

    Off topic
Neymar is a prick, but you have to admit he has some crazy skills

  8. Strik3rr says:

Scholes is easily my player of the season, for without him our depleted midfield would have left us fighting for 3rd. Nobody has contributed more. The games he was not playing he was sorely missed and usually caused our defeat.

    Play on Paul!!!

  9. LeboFan says:

It may come off as a desperate move but we really need him

  10. Ugandan Red says:

Scholes to me is an enigma, to be that age and still be that good at dictating games is amazing. Also the fact that a person that plays in front of 75,000 people watched by millions more is one of the shyest people that you will ever see.

    Absolute Legend….

  11. Trydent says:

Scholes cannot be king as that marker has gone to another. He is certainly the Prince Regent and first lord of OT.He is a shining example of a man in his demeanor alone. As a footballer he is a genius.

  12. Sandeep1878 says:

Dont know why still united fans dont accept the fact that SCHOLESY wanted to make a come back..

all they do is point fingers at Sir Alex..Not right..

With scholesy in the team, he has boosted the confidence of players, esp back four and Carrick, which have been vital for where we are this season in league post xmas..

    Evening reds around the world…

    Cedars,

    hello mate,

2 days to kick off…err..may be one and half ;)

  13. Redbilly says:

A man with true humility. He has never lost himself or been seduced by fame .

  14. King Eric says:

    Morning.

Well fuck off you pair of Spanish cunts. Ramos’ penalty was akin to Waddles in Turin. What a joke. Glad Munich are through as firstly they are a decent efficient outfit who will cause the chavs more problems than Madrid in my opinion. Does Lahm ever have a bad game? Get in Sebastien with the winner. Secondly I do not want that arrogant smug cunt Mourinho winning three this year .

Well so much fo La Liga being streets ahead. Graham Hunter will be suicidal this morning. Like Barca the previous night Madrid looked fucked second half. Munich will take Chelsea apart.

I hear Scott has had a pop at Tony Scouse Evans of the Times for tweeting “Will Ronaldo actually ever show up in big games” Goal in a European Cup final. Fa cup final. League cup final. Copa del Ray. 3 El Classicos. Do your research Tony you scouse bastard.

  15. Redbilly says:

King Eric- looking forward to watching the Chavs get dismantled by german efficency. Bastien…. Com to united.

  16. Redbilly says:

King Eric- if it comes down to penalties, no Terry may be an advantage :-) .

  17. King Eric says:

RedBilly – Spot on. He was superb last night. At one point however ten minutes after the final whistle it looked as though he was about to do a Nazi salute!! I wish Keano had have slotted that giddy cunt Chiles last night.

Wilshire tweet “Ronaldo is good but I am on team Messi” . Oh grow up you childish little cunt.

  18. xol says:

haha ‘Team Messi’ ugh. ‘Team GB’ annoys the fuck out of me. It’s the fucking GB team.

  19. Jeet says:

@King Eric: Lahm has to be the best fullback in the world at the moment. 2 years back, I would have said Evra, but he is in a different class right now, if you ask me.

  20. gaz says:

seen a news report on the daily fail thats just made my blood boil some sick cunts (apparently sheep scum) have posted up a Munich page mocking the munich air disaster on Facebook the fucking cunts on Facebook wont take it down with some bullshit excuse, i am going to fucking e-mail those cunts at Facebook there gonna get it. I

f some little shit can get done for tweeting some vile shit about Muamba surely some scummy toothless fucking cocksucking excreted human beings can be locked up for that.

  21. xol says:

..and did I see Wilshere in one of those special effects laden ads where Galactico types have a kick about in public? It looked like him. I’d love to see a piss-take one where the likes of Zidane, Scholes, etc pass it about before Heskey shoots and misses. Or maybe the ad I saw was a piss take.

  22. MG says:

    Personally:

Ronaldo is good but I am on team Cedars

  23. Redbilly says:

King Eric- chiles is the kind of bloke Roy hates. Arse licking cunt. Bastien would be ideal. No nonsense and he looks a right hard cunt. Sign him up fergie .

Chiles looked like he was on the vinegar strokes. Probably thinks playing bayern increases their chances…… Think again. My wish is to watch the game as the Germans dismantle them.

  24. xol says:

One long weekend until Team Man United play

  25. WillieRedNut says:

I remember watching United lose at anfield, which give leeds scum the title. Feeling really low, and thinking I didn’t want to experience those feelings again. Apart from the odd blip here, or there, the club has repaid us fans back big time. We lost the title at Liverpool officially, but West Ham away was the game that really sunk our chances. Remember Billy Bonds apologising to Fergie, for the effort his players put into the game. They were already down, at this point. All I ask on Monday, is for the players to give everything. If it isn’t good enough on the night, so be it. Come on United! 19/20

  26. Sandeep1878 says:

    Wilsher,

    you messi wanking cunt…

dont know where are those all la liga wankers now..

next up..chavs to get fucker by Bayern..lets accept they quality, disciplined and class players, right from goalie to strikers..

and they all seem to be in their peak except one or two..

enough of the shit that i shudnt be worrying..

    Bring on Monday night…

    May day May day…

  27. Jeet says:

Well said, Willie. All I ask for is an effort that makes Manchester United proud.

  28. Sandeep1878 says:

    MG – :)

    Evening King Eric..

Irish hero – yeah mate i m sure the lads will give everything they got for this game..

    Gaz,

the facebook cunts will need time..fuckers.

  29. Sandeep1878 says:

    Jeet,

the lads will be in hot form, time for revenge and more than that, we play for pride as you put it..

  30. xol says:

Got a feeling Giggs will play after being rested or maybe bench if he makes way for Nani. I think we’re due another big performance from him. Nani has been superb since returning. Looks like he could score a lot of goals in the next 3 games.

  31. Sandeep1878 says:

and when did Charlie Adam became Liverpool Ace as some daily headlined it..

    funny world this :)

  32. Sandeep1878 says:

    and yeah,

we fucking miss Fletcherinho…get well soon homie..

    ###

    Xol,

One thing Sir Alex always does in big games and derbies is to go for Experience..

Giggsy may be in contention but we already have enough selection dilemma between Young, nani and Valencia..

and we cant Scholesy and Giggsy in the middle of the park..

    one more option is,

    4 – 1 – 3- 2

    __________Carrick_________

    Valencia_____Rooney________Giggsy

    _______Nani____Danny____

But excluding Scholesy would mean we panic in ball control and possession…

some very tough selection dilemma ahead…

  33. Redbilly says:

    WRN- well said

  34. Jeet says:

@Sandeep: IMO that’s a bit too experimental for this match. My preference would be:

Steady Back 5 (forget dropping Rafael)
    Carrick Scholes
    Young Cleverly Nani
    Rooney

Giggsy and TonyV on the bench. Jones too, if we need to shore up, and Welbz if we need to attack more.

Prefer Nani/Young to Tony V, because the latter doesn’t always do so well in away games, and Nani always seems to turn up against the bitters.

Or maybe, the Boss will just go all-in with our standard 4-4-2?

  35. Costas says:

Scholes looked very fresh in the first 3 months of his comeback. I think his temporary retirement benefited him greatly on that front. But as much as I loved seeing him back, lets hope next season we won’t need him to this extent. Hope he doesn’t re-retire yet though.

  36. Busby babes says:

Scholes for me at present is the only center midfield player we have who can dictate the pace of a game,

  37. King Eric says:

Jeet – I agree about Lahm mate and for me has been the best right back in Europe for some years .

Sandeep – Hi mate. Yes good thanks pal.

xol – Yes you most ceratinly have seen Wilshire in that cringeworthy ad. Urrggh.

  38. MG says:

  46. Take me to Old Trafford says:

If not for Scholes where will we be?
MG seems to be on fire today.

  47. dannysoya LOVES SIAN MASSEY says:

Scholes is forever excellent but I REALLY hope that he is not here next season. We CANNOT continue to depend on a 33 plus year old man to run our midfield. The fact that he is our best midfielder is a testament to his legendary status but it is also a testament to our REFUSAL to spend money on the right positions. We MUST spend money to get a younger midfielder who can control the midfield and keep the ball very well. Same thing with Giggs. I hope they can leave too so that we start adapting to life without them. They are legends but They can’t continue for much longer and the sooner we start adapting to life without both of them the better. Thanks scholesy for saving us once again.

  48. MG says:

Issa okay then issa thank you for your honest answer your Christiano-ship. Issa ask one more question?

Issa tell me how to beat United no?

I’m sorry I can’t do this. Sir Alex is like my father, I can’t betray him.

So, so I think you can tell
    impostors from real,
    not all are the same.
You can tell a fine meal

    a smile from a veil.
Yes I think you can tell.

But not all are willing to wade
    through heroes or ghosts.
    Who wants that disease?
Hot air, or a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for he.
    Or one could exchange
a walk on part in a war
for a lead role in the cage.

How I’m glad, how I’m glad to be here.
    We’re just all Red souls
    swimming in a fish bowl,
    year after year.
Running over the same old ground.
    What have we found?
    The same old cheers.
I’m just glad to be here.

  64. Jeet says:

@Albert Ross: Lovely song – and we continue to have our musical coincidences. I was thinking of doing something on the lines of “we’re just 2 RED souls, swimming in a RoM bowl, year after year” :)

  67. Albert Ross says:

Jeet – our lyrics are doubtless inspired by triggers in the forum, chosen from a common library.

We just hate blue pus, flowing out of the bus, all over the world, making all the Reds hurl.
Yes I feel sick as well.

  68. WillieRedNut says:

Uefa will allow Terry(cunt) to lift the CL trophy if Chelsea beat Bayern next month. Amazing!

  69. FletchTHEMAN says:

Paul has been a revelation this year and part of it is probably down to the break he took. Thank the gods he kept himself fit as well. At this age, we need to use him economically and hope that we get another year out of him without injury.

He is such a player. They don’t grow on trees do they.

What sets United apart from any other football club in the world, or any other sports institution that ever existed?

    Sir Matt, Sir Alex?
    Busby Babes?
    Holy Trinity?

All the above and much more?

I just know with all my heart and fully functional senses that I support, in fact I am honored and privileged to support the best football club that ever and will ever exist…

    United ARE my life

  71. Costas says:

    A word to Rio.
Rio our season is not saved yet.Come Monday when we hopefully DELETE our noisy neighbours and I'll be running mad with my quod byke in Sliema-St Julians area like crazy ! Be up for lads. Do not let me suffer another heart attack PLEEEEEEEEESSEEEEE !!!!!!

  73. Phil Jones' Birdshit Streaks says:

You know, it would be a travesty if Newcastle finished 4th and were denied a place in the Champions League if Chelsea win it. That seems totally unjust and for that reason I’ll be cheering on Bayern. Obviously, throw into the mix the latest bullshit about Terry, and Chelsea can fuck right off. Set of cunts

  74. Albert Ross says:

Since the end of the Group phase, there has been argument from some quarters that we should support Chelsea (and Arsenal) because England’s ration of CL places was endangered should all English teams do poorly. That rationale has now been turned on it’s head. Supporting Chelsea is to want England’s ration to be reduced immediately, from 4 to 3.

As the streaks on Phil Jones will attest.

  75. King Eric says:

We obviously need a new central midfield player, a blind man can see that BUT I really dislike that line ” we cannot rely on a 37 year old” Why not? When that 37 year old still shits on most kids who would be available.

  76. WillieRedNut says:

Most United fans will be wanting a Bayern win. No brainer!

  77. denton davey says:

CedarsDevil @ 10:22: ” I guess the boss looked at what he had at the beginning of the season with the likes of Clev, Anderson and may be even Pogba and thought we could manage. Of course Scholes could never be replaced like for like”

It’s impossible to replace “class” – and TheGingerNinja is that, and all.

You forgot to mention that there was probably some hope that DarrenFletcherinho was going to be available in addition to YoungTom, FatAndy, and PP (to be known in the future as “It’sPogba,NotDrogba” ???).

One has the sense that SAF keeps his team in “permanent transition” mode – how else can one explain the deletion of perfectly-serviceable players like Nicky Butt, Phil Neville, John O’Shea, and Wesley Brown well before their best-by dates ? So, if there’s any truth in that suggestion, then the WilyOldFootieKnight has probably got his eye on one/two box-to-box midfielders who can be brought in to provide the drive/energy that has been aborted by the unfortunate injury/illness that have wrecked his plans for renewal with Owen Hargreaves and DarrenFletcherinho. Or else, MrJones might be given more than a few, random matches partnering Michael Carrick.

Back to the topic (!), Scholes’ form and endurance have been amazing – can he continue next year ? Why not ? Class is, after all, permanent AND physicality has never been a key part of his game although he has that nasty-bugger streak that anyone wandering through the UTD midfield is well aware of !

  78. King Eric says:

Willie – Too right pal. United and Munich have obviously got a bond type of thing and I am a big fan of Beckenbaur who is always respectful to United and is great pals with Sir Bobby. I have no problems with Munich whatsoever. Well aside from that little fucking nonce Ribery. A proper football club.

Meanwhile gotta love Fergie. Look at him with that mischevious glint in his eye. Bet he is buzzing about Monday and not nervous at all despite what he says. Actually gald its away as we know our away fans will outsing those cunts even if our numbers are low. Their fans will create an edgy atmosphere:

Good review of the facts. Always different rules for United.
Was there a similar ruling for Darren Fletcher I wonder?

  83. King Eric says:

Fuck off Quinn you fat scouse horse abusing dole cheating cunt siding with Terry. Saying the country “forgave Goldenballs for France 98″ Fuck off. He got pilloried for years till his goal against Greece when the little Ingerlunders changed their tunes. Anyway what the fuck has he to do with it? Keano wouldn’t even collect the cup if he could have as he didnt feel part of it. Just like Sir Bobby wouldn’t walk up in Moscow yet Kenyon did. Shows the gulf in class. I fucking detest that fat tached cunt.

  84. King Eric says:

Therefore, if we’re going to be contesting with them for the league title it will become almost as important as the Liverpool derbies. In fact, this supercedes Liverpool at the moment because they’re our direct opponents. We have to focus on the team who can affect our progress in terms of winning the league.”

  88. utd_fc says:

this season will still end up as a colossal fail if we don’t win this league. Knocked out to basel et al in the champs league, bilbao in Europa, the 1-6 at our own home… Wish Rio would stop talking like its in the bag.

I want Bayern to not only win , I want a Bayern goalfest. Bastien letting fuck all through, leave chelski quaking. Followed by varifiable rumours that said Bastian is heading to old trafford. We could make good use of the German powerhouse. One can dream.

What’s happening mate? Still no news?

When you say up to the minute news, is that one particular minute? Which minute will that be?

I will say that your advert is very misleading. It implies that we get the news as-it-happens.
A lot has happened since 18:40.

  94. United says:

It was a little desperate. Just because it came out of Vieira’s mouth doesn’t mean it wasn’t at least a little true.

Think about how much trouble we had controlling games without scholes (Lets set Everton aside, he was tired and needed to come off a good 5-10 minutes before he did)

But, player of the season? Maybe, personally i’d give to Evans, he’d been good and the guy deserves something to make him feel like the fans are on his side.

I hated him, but i’ve come round.
