Rio: United fans are the best in the world

Manchester United have today announced that Rio Ferdinand will have a testimonial on August 9th against Sevilla. It seems strange timing, given that the player marked his 10th year at the club last summer, having signed for United in July 2002. You would think he either should have had it last year or planned to have it when he left the club. Having just signed a contract extension, Rio will be at the club until at least next summer.

Still, it will be a good occasion to celebrate the eleven years Rio has spent with us so far, for a player who undoubtedly loves being here.

“This is going to be a big night for me as well as an emotional one,” said Rio. “I cannot believe where those ten years have gone and I am lucky to have spent them here at Manchester United. This club is unique in every way, the history and drive of the place is unbelievable, it spurs everyone to succeed. The fans are the best in the world, their commitment is amazing and I have appreciated their support throughout my career. I hope they enjoy the night as much as I intend to.”

To be honest, I can’t think of many testimonials that will be greeted with less enthusiasm than this one. I’d say most players that stay with us for 10 years or more would have won the hearts of fans a lot more convincingly than Rio. But his Chelsea flirtations, his ugly mercenary traits and his embarrassing public antiques in my eyes stop him from being a club legend, even though he’s won everything with us and been half of the best central defence partnership ever.

Still, it’ll be good to have his good contributions acknowledged for the night; will it sell out though?

Top marks for Rio, been the media whipping post for years but is starting to be recognized for the quality he is. Not just at United where he was always top dog, but all around the league.

So diserving of a new contract. Hope we get another year out of him after this, but the injuries are always a worry.

Must have been a hard call to step away from National team, but it showed real character and a commitment to United to do so. All credit to Rio for it in my view.

432 games, and closing in on another top CB. Gary Pallister (437) also had lower back problems.

Feel Rio has better taste in cloths and music than most. Top Fergie 11 for me.
    Rio Ferdinand! What a player!

I always liked Rio as a very good player but often thought of him as a bit of a knob who didn’t like living up north and would be back to London ASAP when he’s finished playing. However I honestly think in the last few years he has “got” United and what this club is all about, and he’s a passionate cheerleader for the team and fans and is a powerful dressing room character as well. Well done Rio, a well deserved testimonial in my opinion, and I’ll be there.

@TheyAlwaysScore – Rubbish. No player we’ve signed in the last decade has GOT the club as much as Rio, with the possible exception of Evra. Best centre back we’ve had in the last 30 years and he has a good case to be in our all time XI

Really think Rene Meulensteen deserves better than this. Shocking.

  13. wayne says:

He been told there’s a future for him and he get’s paid well, just don’t see the shocking part in that.
