Former Manchester United captain, Bryan Robson, who lifted the Premiership trophy for United back in 1993, has spoken about how Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher must be feeling.
With United looking good to retain a 19th league title, particularly after our 2-1 win over Liverpool yesterday, there is even more emphasis on the fact this season marks a 20th year without a title for the scousers.
“I know how players like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher must feel,” Robson said. “As a United player, it was horrible having to watch Liverpool lift trophy after trophy while we had to settle for the odd cup success. Before United’s title win in 1992-93, it had been 26 years since the club had last lifted the trophy and believe me, we all knew about it — everybody reminded you.”

And I have come to value the history of the club and I think I missed out a lot. But I think we should take Liverpool as a stark reminder of what could happen to us. Bryan Robson, Capt Marvel, Robbo, Capt Courageous, call him what you like, he was one of the greatest players United have ever had. Where he shades it over others is the fact that he played in a relatively poor United team and lifted them. I’m so glad he stayed at United long enough to pick up a couple of title medals, even if he was by then more of a bit player. He was all-action,completely fearless to the point of craziness, and an inspirational leader who got the best out of his team mates and helped pass on his never-say-die attitude. The other thing I liked about him was he always came across as very modest and very sporting. Although he was a terrific tackler you never felt he was trying to hurt opponents or cheat. He was a genuine ‘role model’ for kids on how to play and how to conduct yourself. Without him the 1980s would have been even more intolerable as Liverpool more or less hoovered up most of the trophies. I wish we could unearth a replica Robson now, not because we don’t have great players but because he was so very special.

I always used to buy New Balance boots. He had 3 broken legs , broken ankles, broken collar bones. A real tough guy who put himself about but the archetypal box to boxer. If Liverpool were going to sell Torres, do you know what kind of competition there would be for his transfer? Say Torres comes to United. It won’t solve our problems because at the moment United can’t play 4-4-2 in every game. And that has nothing to do with Rooney’s strike partner. It’s because we haven’t found a solid robust midfield duo that will protect the backline enough. Could a Fletch-Hargo combination change that? It depends. i think depending on the formation roles are being assigned to specific players. in a 4-4-2 fletcher dosent exactly play as box to box midfiedler but is more in a defensive role(especially in games after the 4-3 win over city). in a 4-5-1 however fletch plays as a proper box to box midfielder with carrick the man who sits a bit deep and scholes controlling the tempo. of late SAF has opted to mark the main opposition player using park which has worked very well so far

Lung420 – fergie does need to spend on 3 players, a GK a striker and a CM, I would not go for the attacking midfielder because put anderson up with a fletcher hargreaves he blossums. I would sign another powerful tackling midfielder. a striker is a must to help rooney out, aguero would be the perfect signing to fit into a 433 system or come off the bench to change the game, and a quality keeper to replace VDS.

To be honest mate I’ve been thinking about that and im quite used to the idea of us not spending if the value isn’t there. Regardless of whether we win any more Silverware I think this season has already been a small success of sorts. Many of our players have stepped up to the Plate and grown in maturity. Thats Priceless. So next season, with everybody back including Anderson and (hopefully) Hargreaves, I think we can push on just as we are and be even stronger.
I do think we’ll spend something, we’ll bring in at least one defender, perhaps another attacking option, maybe, but looking at our full squad I’d much rather see Kiko, Welbeck and Diouf have a fair go, why chase after big names when we always MAKE big names? I want to see Pogba. Also, Nani and Valencia have the wings covered and we’ve already signed Obertan. He looks impressive so far considering he hasn’t even unpacked yet. Centre Midfield? Carrick and Fletcher have been reliable and unsung as ever this season, and Scholes and Giggs continue to play their special roles. Anderson and the Influencial Hargreves will both be fighting for a first team place next year too, while Gibson has shown promise in areas of his game and deserves more playing time.
Soooo to answer your question I think we WILL spend, but I think it will be frugally, which is fine by me, I’ll just try not to cringe when you know who attemps to sway our supporters with scare stories.
WHO in Europe wouldn’t want our CURRENT players? We don’t have to buy, and if that reduces our debt even quicker then its a bonus. Even if we get new owners, it doesn’t change the fact that spending when you don’t have to isn’t always wise.
We’re yet to see Fabio force Alec to rest Evra more. Smalling will be used to rest Rio/Vidic next Seaon. We have an amazing young squad already imo.
The brightest prospect in Europe in fact, and we’ll only get better.
Paul Parker – you dont go into next season if we are succesful and not strengten the squad, a striker is a huge priority this summer, how ever other players have done united have not got alot out of the strikers beyond rooney so a striker is needed badly next season.
the CM needs strengten because carrick is gettin worse, hargreaves there is no garentee what he will be like next season, scholes may not even sign a new contract and even if he does he will be 36, anderson will have had to recover from a bad injury, gibson is awful and if flether is missed in the big games we miss him badly.
in goal VDS will need a replacement because kuszszec and foster are not good enough to take his place

Your absolutely right about a new Keeper, I completely forgot to consider it. Thats mainly down to VDR’s solid presence, but we know he unfortunately cannot continue forever. I think that Alec will show us all whether he intends to stick with our current second and third choice Keepers, or branch out for new talent. To be honest, I’ll be happy with his choice either way, because I think Foster if he stays will sort out his occasional laspes in concentration and be a great Keeper for us. My only faults of his game can all be remedied with experience. He is a natural shot stopper. I also think Kuzsask has played well for us when he’s had to fill in. Maybe im being too kind but despite being nervious when he’s in goal I can’t really think of his most recent clanger. He would benefit from being told he is number one.
But eitherway, for now I think VDR has another great year in him, just like our Captain does.
It will be interesting to see if we do bring in a Keeper tho, I think Gordon has been solid all season….
Think if we splashed out on a combative defensive midfielder (like a Hargreaves type player), it might be all we need to complete this current United team. That way, we can play 4-4-2. 4-4-3, 4-5-1 with strength and bit more confidence (esp in 4-4-2). Feels like we have all the other parts, kinda just need an anchor in midfield. I believe then, the likes of Berbatov, Obertan, Tony, Nani will grow INTO the players we think we need to buy ‘now’.
Just thinking about the example at Barcelona. The supporting cast around Messi seems to maximise his potential. United needs to create that same platform ongoingly for Rooney.

Paul Parker – plus its a good squad but there are still holes in the squad, yes if berbatov stepped up then the CF position would not needed strengtheng but you cant force a horse to water and reality is united need another forward, and next season to expect rooney to do the same again is really putting way to much strain on rooney and playing russian roulette on uniteds season next year when he is the only striker we have that can play the main striker in a 433 system.
It is nothing against berbatov and owen but they cant lead the line in a 433 system, the type of players they are they are suited to 442 and that leads to another point we need a top class midfielder that can take carricks place. because carrick is playing awful, he gave the ball away more times than I ca count.
these are the reasons why I feel the CF position needs strengthening
owen has picked up a bad injury and he will need time to get back into the swing of things.
kiko is still injured and he along with welbeck who has also had a bad injury and they will need time and are they going to really step up I doubt it.
berbatov will need surgery on his knee and thats going to recuce uniteds striking options even more. add the fact he off to world cup
diouf is way to raw and he looked it in the game against wolves to play ahead of uniteds better strikers
rooney is also off to world cup and we have no idea what could happen to him

Still, I think Berbatov will have a better Season next year. After being optimistic for Berby this Season I became disillusioned with his failure to play aggressively enough to warrent his inclusion at the expense of not having a five man midfield. But following his excellent and full blooded performance in the Final he’s consistently played with extra purpose. I’ve been waiting all Season for him to run past players into the box like he did against Fulham.
I think after this Campaign and hopefully after winning some more Silverware we’ll see the best of him next Season. Its just my opinion but I don’t think we NEED another Striker. Of course I won’t complain if Benzema pops up, but to be honest I’d much rather see Welbeck and Kiko and Diouf get a fair run than see Villa or Augero or even Benzema joining us. I’d much rather see our Young Strikers play. We have 3 secondary Strikers after Berby and Roonie lets not forget, and I think ONE of them will rise to the occasion if given the chance. Did I mention OWEN?
Nah, its just my opinion, but I don’t think we’re missing a Striker for next Season. If our youngesters underwhelm in 2010/11 so bet it, but I think Alec will give them a chance to Shine. Kiko isn’t being rushed back for a reason, and Welbeck isn’t at Preston for no reason. Had Diouf put away his three chances on his last brief appearance he would’ve forced Alec to play him again. He comes highly rated by Ole lest we forget. Our team right now is a match for anybody in Europe. Sure we have to look at strengthening certain positions, and sure certain youngesters need to step up. But people were calling for a replacement to Valencia early on, and recently people were calling for a replacement for Nani. Our Keeper is a more urgent isse because VDR can’t play forever, but generally speaking I seriously don’t think we have to rush out and by anybody…. altho I wouldn’t complain if Benzama arrived lol.

the slagging of Carrick beggars belief………I remember having a conversation with you about this amonth or so ago. yes, he did not start the season in the best form and continued to be inconsistent for the first few months where he more about passing sideways…..but in the last coupla months he has been outstanding and has recovered his best form. it crazy how people want to sell him so quickly after just one or two average (not even bad…just average!) performances.
just the other day, Fergie was talking about how Carrick Fletcher, Rooney and Oshea were going to carry on the tradition of winning in the dressing room after Giggs, Scholes and Nev had gone…… Carrick isn’t going anywhere for the next few years at least!!
I guess its just that a few people havent forgiven him for his performance in last years champions league final it seems……but if Carrick can start his seasons as well as he is finishing it or at least the way he has been for the coupla months, i would have no complaints at all……

However i dont want us to sell Berbatov. He is just beginning to show us his true capability. It would be really sad if we sell him now.

Silva isnt over rated but i dont want him at United, His injury record isnt good. He is injured for 1/3rd of the season and is only 24.That hamsik guy from Napoli would be a batter option. However if Ando can step it up and hargo can come back we dont need anybody else especially as we have 4 wingters who are all doing really well.

i agree mate and with Silva the thing is he is more of an attacking midfielder which we dont exactly have anyone at the moment. I honestly think if he is played in that role Anderson can do the job. if i am not mistaken he was bought as an Attacking midfielder but hasnt played in that role at United. Hargreaves is a bit like fletch and is a box to box midfielder who can play at right back on the wings. I personally hope he can play more consistently next season. if not then SAF may use him for the big games like in his first season. The prospect of fletch and hargo in the same midfield is making me crazy. honestly feel fletcher is the best box to box midfielder in the world.
Silvas price may also be a problem depending oin how may more clubs especially real and barca are interested in him. Close call but i dont doubt his quality.

United will not buy Aguero mate, he’s way overpriced and we really don’t need another striker that drops deep. If we do buy a forward in the summer, it’ll have to be someone that plays central with pace to get in behind defences. On the midfield, if Hargo can get back to full fitness, then i don’t think we’ll need anyone, we’ve got a plethora of midfield options if everyone stays fit. ps how bad are Leeds since their cup – final

rtnk – Don’t agree mate. Aside from Everton and Wolves Carrick has had a decent half of the season. Fergie seems to like him and he is a starter in most games. You just can’t see it can you? He keeps United ticking over mate with his one and two touch passing. You don’t play in the engine room for the last 3 years if you ain’t up to the job.
Also do not agree with the slagging of Carrick- he is our metronome and helps set the pace. People always complain saying he passes ‘sideways and backwards but never forward.’ First of all, that is simply not true and second of all, being a midfielder does not just consist of hoofing the ball forward (unless you are the Scousers). Carrick distributes the ball extremely well and helps us CONTROL possession. A note to all the slaggers- passing backwards and sideways helps you keep possession. I would like to see him make some of those through balls he used to hit Ron with, but he is hardly deserving of some of the criticism. Fellaini over Carrick? Costas said it best, we might as well as replace Fletcher with Lucas. Also, Carrick has been at United 3 years, we have won 3 league titles, a European Cup, and appeared in the next year’s final (which Carrick played in with a broken toe). Get some perspective, lads!
Honestly don’t remember a great game from Carrick. I don’t hate any of our players but i don’t see how the player is a midfielder. In russian they name it half-defender, Carrick isn’t a half defender.
Hope he proves me wrong at some point, hope it wouldn’t be late. But he really was missing during the Sunday game. Watch the first half carefully.

Guys, i don’t pretend i am the only one here who is right and gets all of the right points. But i can hardly say Carrick is an inspirational player. He has some decent games but Fletcher can also control the tempo of the game and у is much more of the half-defender.

King Eric – I have been backing carrick but this season he has given the ball away alot to much for my liking. the past 3 seasons he has been really good but this season he has been poor. I think carrick has been uniteds weakest performer in terms of the number of games played, because anderson has not really started enough games, dont forget fergie was furious with carrick at the start of the season thats a hint fergie was not happy with carricks performences, you saw the difference when scholes came on against liverpool the distribution from scholes is a level up from carrick, carricks big problem is he sometimes holds on to the ball to much and like american football when the quater back delays the throw he gets pawned. It would be a huge mistake from fergie if carrick was sold but I am saying he has had a poor this season when you look at his 3 seasons prior to this season.
Carrick has no sense of urgency. Playing to a rhythm is one thing but the boy is borderline asleep in some of his most appalling performances this season. Heck he looked like he was playing a completely different sport v the dippers.
Any of you making claims that he’s world class have some seriously red-tinted glasses going on.
Being critical doesn’t mean one is anti-united. But with some of you as long as players are in a red shirt they are somehow made immune from scrutiny with their magical cloaks of infinite excuses.
On another note Eric at the game made me smile inside.

King Eric – Quite right his performances against Arsenal and Milan where class, but i honestly think he has become stale the last 2 seasons and Sir Alex is a past – master at knowing when a players times up. Maybe Modirc could be an option in the summer and Tom Cleverly could well be knocking on the door next season.

Modric isn’t the answer, a good enough player but even Spurs fans say he blows hot and cold.
