I know this may sound heartless and cruel, but I think United should ditch Asia. I was reading about how something in the region 3 quarters of the fanbase comes from there. I think the Club should stop touring there during close season. It’s tiring for the players and the season’s already too long. We’ve got them on board now and any offspring will be born reds. If we struggle to at any point to stay in the top division, they’ll be able to prove they’re not glory hunters. SItes like this are a good tool for long time supporters to impart knowledge on new fans, but like that report posted by coomy says, the idiots are huge in number. There were times recently when this almost unrecognisable due to the cack being spewed in pigeon ingurlish.

I would love the young lads to be given the oppurtunity to replace Scholes but it may well be a bit to soon for Morrison, but he will be some player if he keeps his off field antics in order and will eventually be one of our main players with Tunni and Pogba IMO. I just think we need to get a proven world class creative CM to step up a level for next season, if Ando can keep fit and get in form we wouldnt need to look any further!! hopefully thats the case this season if we dont sign a CM!!
Gee – Agree mate. We all want the young bucks making an impact in the first team, but we still imo, need a CM. You can’t lose Hargreaves, Gibson and Scholes this summer and not bring another midfielder. Fergie is no fool. He knows the midfield needs strengthening.

I totally agree mate…. I wrote about this same thing a while back. The problem with way too distant pre season tours is not only about travel time its more to do with the fact that players are required to be more of PR agents to promote the brand and therefore not enough time is spent on fitness training, well not as much as should be. Furthermore we end up playing far inferior competition. I do understand the commercial aspect of these tours but where do we really draw the line. We have suffered with slow season starts over the past few tears because of it.
I cannot remember the last time United had a pre season in Europe or even the UK for that matter

I admit though, I do enjoy being able to watch pre season games, wherever they may be. I just wonder what would happen if the club stopped touring over there or investing £ ($). There were no tours to the States for a while, maybe someone from there can explain the impact of last year’s tour.
A lot of the hard work was done in the past in Asia. Hence there are more than a few seasoned reds there, who spread the word.

You also need to state your argument as to why your are so sure that Welbeck is already ahead of Berba, whilst again you have Berba in your second 11 and not Welbeck….
Nani will play lots of games at the start because Tony V is playing in the Copa.
Hernandez will also need some time after his first season and the gold cup.

Agree with yr comments, Nani/Anderson are just maturing the right way now,we have invested our time and trust in these kids. They delivered in the champions league final by scoring thier penalties while our more esteemed enemies did not, 2008 thier first season. Nani has continued to contribute every season and last year or so has been his best, while anderson is just starting to fire on all cyclinders.
To me Nani is the complete winger,from the first time he played for us, Why? he can play right or left ,support or lead striker. Though its clear he is more comfortable on the right,he is getting better all round. Most importantly he tracks back,puts in a good hard shift.
Anderson for me is the complete midfeilder. why? i have seen him defend like hargreaves and makelele. seen him distribute the ball like scholes. seen him beat 4 or 5 players and make that important pass and score .
Now both of them clearly are not doing any of this on a consistent basis but they are getting there.
Ferguson said its maturity that they need. Nani is ahead in that but towards the end of last season anderson was catching up. This season they will carry more responsibility,so lets tune in and see how far they progress.

@Cedars, Although I agree that our pre-season takes a toll on the players, it is necessity IMO. Unlike Arsenal or Chelsea, United are a truly global club. If you have to maintain that kind of popularity, then you have to tour places like USA, Africa, Asia etc. to increase your value as a brand. I will let DM settle it with xol, but in recent times, United can feel like we’ve grabbed the Asian markets with the capture of Park and our tours have been a major success.
That is why we’re turning our attention to USA over the past two years. USA is arguably one of the biggest markets in terms of merchandising alone and getting a major foothold, some would say we’re already there, is going to be key to our continued success.
So, while our start to the season could suffer directly as a result of our tours, there is no other way to go I am afraid. Also, like we discussed the other day when the topic came up, although our start suffers, we usually finish stronger as a result. Personally, I would take a stronger finish than a stronger start which falters as we reach the finish line.

What I was suggesting is perhaps the hard work has been done in that part of the world. I’m aware other clubs look to Asian markets too, but from what I hear, they’ve got a lot of catching up to do.

The only reason why teams travel to places far away during pre season is to increase the fanbase ie. revenue from United related merchandise. I can’t bleieve that anyone would think that we do it for any other reason and that’s why xol is absolutely spot on.
Heywood is Red – I won’t presume to know a lot about this player having not seen him play enough. I did however see him have an absolute horror show agaisnt Inverness towards the end of last season. Granted it was one game only but my word he was so bad it was untrue.

Surely part of the reason is to reward existing fans in far-flung regions that otherwise would be unable to watch United live. If they do not deserve this attention, then United should not be using the revenue they earn there to remain a force in world football.
Further, although you dismiss this out-of-hand, the fact is that there are many other benefits, that are often alluded to by Sir Alex. A tour to newcastle, or France, will not bring the team together in quite the same way as a trip to a foreign land. Also, the facilities found in the US, or the East usually outstrip anything we find on the continent. Another factor is that negative press is non-existent there. There are many other factors I’m not listing here, but already I have shown that your statement is untrue.
Actually, it is true to say that United are a force in World football because of the pre-season tours that they have regularly undertaken for many years, and not in spite of them.

The Yanks have an abundance of big stadia and can fill them, Their are an endless supply of Olympic stadia in Asia begging to be filled for once and thus we play there. If you think about Europe then the big teams have big stadia but they are playing host at the same time, their home team and the grass wouldnt be fit to play on with an over crowded pre season fixture list. Anyway your not going to attract a new fan base from a European City which has a big stadium because they already have an undying support. While not disrupting the debate, I will add that I agree with smartalex. It is not only about the money. United are already a global brand and will rake in the money whether we do the tours are not. But providing the fans with entertainment and a chance to see these players live is another reasons. Also, it gives the players a chance to see just how much they are loved and idolized even outside Manchester. Many of our players themselves said so on our last tour to Japan (I think). So, yeah, I agree that it is not all about the money.
I also think Goat’s posts are like those A-rated comedies (The Hangover II comes to mind). If you are too sensitive, you might be grossed out by them. If you can handle it, it doesn’t get funnier than that.
Also, we should keep the debates in good health. It is had enough that we have to battle the constant trolls from other blogs who have nothing better to do than be obsessed about United. We shouldn’t start fighting amongst ourselves not matter how much the opinion might be divided.

I had planed to go to OLD TRAFFORD last fall and my back surgeries got in the way, went without new income for the better part of 7 months. I will make it this coming year but most likely in the spring for $ reasons I want to see 2 games at old Trafford and a road game as well and make it a 3 week trip and I’m second generation Irish and Italian and want to go meet some cousins in Ireland as well and drink till I drop.
