VIDEO – Ronaldo: I Really Miss United

Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted to missing Manchester United, despite being happy in Madrid.

“I think Manchester United are doing very well this season – they have lost the last two games but they are still second in the league,” said Ronaldo ahead of the FIFA World Player of the Year awards in Zurich. “What people think about me is their opinion but I really miss Manchester a little bit as I played there for six years and I left a few friends there. So I miss the club a little bit but I’m focused now at Real Madrid and I’m really, really happy there.”

Video footage of question and answer.

  2. bchilds says:

Anywhere after United is a step down

  3. swissred says:

oh, he’s “really, really happy there”… no “god only knows” and no “you never know in the furure”?
besides he’s wrong we did not lose the last two games…

  4. Che Guevarist says:

I can’t help but feel that if we beat Milan and Becks we will be drawn against Madrid and Ronnie. Now wouldn’t that be wonderful?

  5. denton davey says:

Look, he didn’t need a PR agency to come up with this treacle – unlike, say, Tiger Woods. When CR speaks, the platitudes come straight from his own mouth.

  6. Bebeto says:

Really, really happy with being the centre of attention. He’s thriving on it.

I thought there would be feelings of resentment in seeing him perform for Madrid. It turns out it’s a joy to watch. I’m really pleased to see him enjoying his football so much.

  7. Mic says:

I miss him, he was great, wouldn’t want him as a winger though, I really like Valencia and what he offers, i’d want Ronaldo as a forward alongside Rooney.

  8. aig alex is god says:

Ronaldo has won the ‘Puskas award’ for his striker against Porto at the FIFA player of the year awards. Apparently its the award for the best goal of last season and the one against Porto was some goal.

  9. aig alex is god says:

Casillas, dani alves, terry, vidic, evra, xavi, iniesta, gerrard, messi, ronaldo, torres.

Thats the world 11 at the FIFA awards

Terry has been voted for the 5th time.Towering displays and strength. are you kidding me?. made me vomit

  10. Fze123 says:

    Yeah. Whats new?

  11. Gopher Brown says:

He’ll be hankering after his ‘dream move’ to Man Utd in a couple of months

  12. prakrules says:

Gerrard! WTF did he achieve with club and country last season?

  13. Fze123 says:

What has Torres achieved? Rooney should be in there instead of him ffs.

  14. Bebeto says:

I’m more inclined to revert to the myth that the world is flat than believe the incessant one of Terry being worthy of all of those accolades.

  15. Maci says:

And we miss u too ronny :-( .

  16. mikekelly12 says:

Entertainment at the awards is not with keeping with the footballing talent on show!

  17. aig alex is god says:

Kaka isnt even in the team of the year, hasnt done anything of note.why on earth is he a nominee for the player of the year?

  18. mikekelly12 says:

    Messi…..there’s a suprise!

  19. Costas says:

I am not going to lie. I do miss Ronaldo. I don’t know how much United miss him, but personally, i miss seeing his talents displayed at OT. That being said, you do have to wonder what’s he really thinking. Maybe he is missing United more than he would like to admit?

  20. Besher says:

At least vida got a little recognition and at last evra is conisdered better than cashly coz he is

  21. Rob the Red says:

    Winker

  22. alpine trail says:

dont’ care what you naysayers say, he loved united really & i miss seeing him too…

  23. brett1985 says:

Manchester United tied up an 80m deal to see Ronaldo come home.

    Then the game crashed.

    :(

  24. Saad says:

    Really a non story this…

  25. alpha_rs says:

I often think what we could have achieved had Ronaldo stayed.
We were so close to emulating the success AC Milan had in the late 80′s and early 90′s. Dominating europe. All we needed was a bit of a change in midfield and we would have been there.

  26. rooney the new king says:

    - do I miss the ronaldo that won united games and helped united to trophys, or miss the ronaldo that time and time again made noises leaving god only knows well we know now dont we ronaldo.

    – well ronaldo is not a total idiot he has made great PR unlike tevez so united fans still love him, some love him to much despite the fact he did not want to play for the club but he used united has a stepping stone. has soon has he became good he could not wait to leave united, look at the people with ronaldo given snobby remarks about united.

  27. Tonybee says:

    FUCK HIM…….HE,S GONE
wish he took Nani with him when he went !!

  28. Costas says:

In my opinion, and having watched the 06-07 and 07-08 season reviews again, i think Ronaldo loved United. However, he loves Cristiano a lot more. Nothing wrong with that. Taking these 2 factors into consideration, i think United and Ronaldo took from each other their very best. The mariage run it’s course, but the sex was great till the end. :P

  29. rooney the new king says:

@ Costas – united got 2 years out of him at best, and better than most of our attackers currently who have not got close to that level. 07/08 maybe a great season short term but long term it is propably a killer for united, when fergie put too many eggs in one basket with ronaldo when ronaldo is like having a 35 year old player he is never a long term player to have but an investmant.

  30. alpha_rs says:

United are missing Ronnie too. For his match winning ability on the pitch.
The moaning and pimping maybe not so much!

  31. Costas says:

    @rooney the new king:

The way he was playing that season, no one was going to stop him. Not even Fergie lol. I think we got to see him at his very best in the last 3 years. Before that, he was still developing. I don’t think that he will reach the same heights(from a fitness and form standpoint) again. I am sure that he will do well at Real, but not as good as he did for us.

You bring up an interesting point. Ronaldo did overshadow the rest in the 07-08 season, but i don’t think we ever became completely dependent on him. I have said it before, but the Edwin-Rio-Vidic trinity is as much responsible for our recent success as Ronaldo is.

  32. Ohhh_Ahhh says:

    COME BACK!!!

  33. rooney the new king says:

@ Costas – well if united had more sources of goals in other areas of the team other than ronaldo scoring I dont think he would have overshadowed the team, I just think the lack of goals in other areas of the team made ronaldo overshadow the success even more , unlike 99 where the veriaty and more options upfront were far better and the CM in 99 was much better.

  34. NotoriousRedDevil says:

I disagree Costas if we go by stats he’s scored a lot of goals already and is still on course to score 40 odd goals this season. If he goes and does that HE will be deemed succesful regardless of how well Real Madrid do. If you go by trophies won I can’t see Real winning the league or champions league this season.

  35. rooney the new king says:

@ NotoriousRedDevil – well I think madrid will win the league they have much more depth upfront than barca and despite they leak goals they score goals for fun.

    – with ronaldo and gonzalas who they are just on fire and barca who rely on a system which makes their squad very thread bear, without messi barca look very slow in attack while madrid have more versitility.

    - ronaldo will be the difference this season and with spains rubbish defending he is made to destroy la liga defences

  36. Bebeto says:

Tony Cascarino was giving his two cents on Sky earlier. He constantly repeated himself, citing Ronaldo’s absence as a contributing factor towards our struggles. I have nothing against that assertion, yet why he persistently referred to Ronaldo and Tevez is beyond me. How on earth do you struggle without a player who did so little in his final season.

He was also talking about Chelsea and how they’ve reached their lowest point, whilst we can only continue to struggle.

Sky Sports looks increasingly like a retreat for incoherent, biased, unoriginal retirees.

  37. Costas says:

    @rooney the new king:
I see your point. They were 2 different teams though. The 99 team didn’t have a player as talented as Ronaldo. It was a team that had fantastic footballers and a team that relied on team work That’s why the goals spread around more in my opinion. Not to mention the fact that players like Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Ole, Cole and Keane had a reached a fantastic point of maturity. The 08 team had a lot of solid workers(Rooney, Tevez, Carrick, Ando and Nani) all of whom in a way worked for Ronaldo.

However, it goes without saying that Carrick, Tevez and Rooney can’t be as prolific goal scorers as Scholes, Yorke and Cole were.

    @NotoriousRedDevil:
True that. He has started on fire. It was kind of wishful thiking on my part as well! However, i am curious to see if he will keep it up for the entire season. His 07-08 season was out of this world and i just don’t believe anyone can recreate that kind of consistent goalscoring form.

  38. rooney the new king says:

Costas – messi scored 41 goals last season so that kind of level has been done.

  39. Costas says:

    @rooney the new king:

Sorry, i meant by the same player.

  40. ModoB. says:

What does Ronaldo mean when he says:

    “…I REALLY miss Manchester a LITTLE BIT…”

He says “really” as if it’s alot, but then goes on “a little bit”. I’ve read it a few times and listened to it even more times, but it never seems to make any sense.

  41. MG says:

Ronaldo misses us – the virus has taken antibiotics – will they be enough to clear his system? (nope not really).

What’s next Becks comes back and accidentally wears the red shirt?

On another note one that sent me into stitches; Mancini said:

“Manchester is similar to Milan in its football passion”

Fuck me the delusion has began before a ball has even been kicked : )

Maybe he thought he was signed up by OT and then realised uh – what colour is this – it’s blue – shock horror : )

  42. Costas says:

    @rooney the new king:

Just to be fair, Ruud managed to score 80 goals in his first two seasons. I forgot about him because i was thinking about goalscoring midfielders and wingers.

  43. KVN says:

    @ costas
That line made me laugh mate! The marriage ran it’s course, but whilst it lasted the sex was great!
We do miss CR7 and he does miss us. Even though things are going well for him I think he just misses the family atmosphere and culture of the club. At RM it isn’t like that. Despite all the attention – which he adores- there is something special about being a United player.
Can United and SAF turn things around ?
Yes he can. What happened after Bryan Robson left,or Cantona or RVN or Keane or Scmichael. SAF always finds a player or a group of players who he turns into greats. What SAF has achieved with such a depleted team is a near miracle.

  44. rooney the new king says:

@ MG – I hate to say this but united do miss ronaldo more than ronaldo misses united, he is destroying defences having a blast there and he is smiling and enjoying his football and the madrid experience, while united are to blunt in attack they have no ideas of how to break defences down and the football is worser than last year.

  45. King Eric says:

One question – Does anyone else think “manunitechampions2008″ is still masquerading on this site under another name? Been thinking it a while.

  46. rooney the new king says:

    - well I will refrase that about united cant break defences down, when things go against united and united have to get back into a game or take the game to the opponents when united are behind in matches united are out of ideas, agains strong compact and stubborn teams united are useless.

    – when the chips are down we dont rise to the challenge and show why united are champions. I thought we may not miss ronaldo but because united dont have a naturel no 9 and a top class wide player I think united are missing ronaldos explosive attacking movements.

  47. MG says:

    @rooney the new king

Maybe – maybe if the whole team bar one or two players was fit and we would not be having this conversation.

Last year we didn’t score many goals in the Premiership but won it – Ronaldo played

Look he wanted out – he’s gone – SAF made him like he’s made them all – they can all walk and have walked – as long as he’s there we just have to buckle up for the ride.

After that we can start talking about our football.

I keep on saying to look at Chelsea – with a full strength squad bar a player or two they are complete rubbish – but we are hanging on with half the team – go compare last 5 results if you want any proof. We just need to stay in there and let everyone come back – then we’ll see what this squad is made of.

  48. King Eric says:

A certain Renee Mulensteen should take credit for Ronaldo’s rise to the top as well. Personal coach for some years.

  49. rooney the new king says:

@MG – I dont know who should be kicking themselves even more chelsea at full strength who are like drunks at top spot, or united crippled with injurys you decide ppl. that is the million doller question who is more annoyed united or chelsea.

  50. Costas says:

Today i was thinking that this December reminds me a bit of the last one. We have Chelsea and Liverpool dropping points all the time while United are absent. Well, we are not exactly in Japan this year, but most of our first choice players aren’t playing anyway. Just something to lighten things up a bit.

@KVN: I can’t take complete credit for that line. I think someone wrote it here last June. I just don’t remember who it was. I think you are right. Maybe he is missing the way he was treated over here. But i don’t think he is dwelling too much on it.

  51. MG says:

    @rooney the new king

You are correct we should kick ourselves because against Portsmouth West Ham – we have absolute rubbish records over the last few years yet we scored 4 goals both times. Hell we beat the champions of Germany at there own patch so yes you are correct we let Villa and Fulham get away with it – and I don’t disagree with anyone that says that we should have made a fist of it – esp. Villa @OT because it was home. But the flip side the injuries have taken it’s toll – we can only wish that what is happening to us now will eventually even out.

However I assure you them lot led by dumbo 90 point Terry must be totally livid looking at the predicament we are in and not running away with the league. Therefore I bet they are clueless knowing why the juggernaut is off the rails – which means as I keep on pointing out as long as we can grind some results within this period – they have it coming. I remind you and everyone Ancelotti forgot to win Serie A – it’s ben a long time for him – it’s showing and he knows it.

  52. rooney the new king says:

@MG – it is simple maths, attack out of form no defence = disaster hey I am great at maths LOL.

chelsea are only top because united are out of sorts. I am still in stitchess by the times podcast saying chelsea are the best in europe. I tell you ppl if the press think chelsea are the cream of europe my god all the other european clubs must be bad.

    – has for terry he sums up chelseas players they are bad at maths, essiens calculater terrys dream of 90 pts, what next chelsea will win the quad.

  53. dl says:

    @ ModoB
got to say the quote through me a bit – though ronaldo’s english has improved massively over the last few years it is not at the same level as (most) english natives so i’d put down the ‘really’ and ‘little bit’ part of the quote down to him mixing up his words a little bit, which is understandable considering english is his 2nd (3rd?) language.

it seems the english papers have skim read over his actual quote and are titling the (non) story as ‘oh he still misses utd’ but what he actually said (twice) was a ‘little bit’ which to me sounds like an obligation to help him look good (like when someone is asked about their school days which at the time they couldn’t wait to finish and leave from – a few yrs later when reminiscing about the whole experience they smile about the good times but are no less glad/relieved that that part of their life is over) he also said for the up-teenth time that the manchester utd ‘cycle has ended’ and he’s happy at madrid so unless he drops dramatically in form in the next few yrs and/or madrid decide to flog in the next 5-10yrs (which i don’t think madrid would be that stupid as even if ronaldo played with the skills of a tortoise from now on, madrid will still make a fortune off him from commercial avenues and we all know that rm are a business first, football club (debatable) second) the only way ronaldo will willingly step foot in our club again is as our opposition.

Bottom line is as much as some fans and people within old trafford try to justify that the player did ‘love’ utd, after his behaviour/attitude in the fateful summer of 08 it was clear that he had little respect for the club and imo if you have no respect for something you don’t really care about them/it and certainly don’t ‘love’ it/them. at the end of the day ronaldo was a great employee for our club that’s all – no more, no less. Prehaps the situ will be different at madrid for him (they are supposively his dream club after all) but to my point of view it is difficult to have true long term affection over someone who aimed their affections elsewhere for at least half the time he was with us.

sorry about the length – it just bothers me how many of the fans are willing to forgive (in a way there is nothing that we would need to forgive someone in his position for as you have to be 100% one of us to be labelled as a ‘traitor’ in the 1st place which is why i’ve never seen him as someone who betrayed utd in leaving them) and forget given some of his history!

  54. rooney the new king says:

dl – like I said before ronaldo just used united has a vehicle and he never respected united has a club and never saw the fact just how big united are, ronaldo is what you call a football snob.

  55. theboogeyman says:

King Eric- I have the same feeling mate.

  56. PP says:

Boo hoo and we miss you too but only because the £80 mil we got for you was never used. Neither was the £25 mil or so that is supposedly available every year for transfers. Our transfer policy was apparently solely based on getting Benzema but he wanted to play with CR7 and the other galacticos. what we are really missing is 2/3 players with the buzz factor such as CR7, Cantona Best Law etc. I just don’t see any in the present side. Rooney on his day is and on others can be ****

  57. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

Ronaldo scored 42 goals in a season where united won the European cup and the premiership, because of that one season he became only the secondan to win young player and world player of the year. He left for a record amount and is saying everything right. This guy is a legend , giggs scholes Neville and Ronaldo are united legends in the team last year, rooneys doing it almost every week it’s just with his honers robs ahead even if I want Rooney over Ronaldo everytime. I’ve the upmost respect for Ronaldo and take him back in a heart beat but if he never comes back I’m glad for the time he spent at united. The closest I’ll ever get to seein George best. And anyone on here that knows me knows this isn’t some bullshit. U dint read the paper and say someones the worlds best , the guy was a one trick pony who became the worlds beat at united and that puts him in sir Bobbys book in my mind

  58. rooney the new king says:

@Gotta hate tiny tears – I would not take ronaldo back in a heart beat he made his bed let him live in it. I am still not happy how he took every united fan for a ride I respect for some of the great things he done, but ronaldo is like signing the deal with the devil its great at first but the fine print is the let down.

    – on another note fuck this negitivity lets get behind this team and try and win this fucking title, 3 league wins and united maybe top.

  59. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

    Rooney the new king
I’m not saying I’d take him back because I’m not behind the team December could end and febuary could start and January window can go fuck itself I believe united will win the title, ask any past united player who left if the could of had a do over would the of hoped to stay ince savage tevez heinze I’d say would say no, my point is if united had the chance to get Ronaldo back because he wanted Manchester united then I’d be thick not to want him back. I bought a bed I didn’t like it so I exchanged it, bit at least I tried memory foam because I always wanted to try it

  60. rooney the new king says:

Gotta hate tiny tears – yes true but it still annoys me how he took many united fans for a ride, the people who advice him have help turned him into a football snob, if he would love to return and not put many united fans through that speculation and is commited yes.

    – I would not call him a united legend he did not do it long enough and he lost the hunger after winning the european cup.

  61. dl says:

I think many of us – love him or hate him (or somewhere inbetween) would love him to return at some point (on condition that the more negative aspects of his attitude/behaviour has been grown out of) However i don’t see that possibility, however being an option until he reaches his late 20′s/early 30′s (approx 4-9 yrs time) as madrid if nothing else are bloody good at the business side of the game (squeezing the lemon for every last drop before throwing the skin away par say – sentiment is not high on their or their fans list, just read some of madrid’s fans comments on raul & guti who though through the yrs have acted like prats still deserve more respect then they get) and for madrid to even consider selling his form would need to drop dramatically (unlikely as on paper he statically still got 3-5 playing at his peak because of his age before aspects of getting older kick in) as well as his commercial value (considering that beckham at 34 commercial wise is still going strong, ronaldo could still be a big draw for advertisers well in his 30′s) and also if another teenager/early 20′s player in the mold of a ronaldo/beckham/henry (a talented and commercial player) who will be cheaper because of their age and still have many of their best yrs in front of them comes through the system (many people say that ronaldo dethroned beckham on both aspects when beckham hit his 30′s so the same may happen to ronaldo at around that same time) especially once ronaldo has passed the norm peak footballer yrs of 27/28 (lets be honest, he is unlikely to be a better player in his early 30′s than in these next few yrs as his strengths are is speed and power which to an extent is linked with age).
Also the only way that i’d want him to come back to old trafford is if he wanted to come (ie.. we were his first choice) – not that he had to because madrid sold him off (and if given the choice he’d still be there, and utd was a backup choice – unless of course madrid end up treating him badly and he wants to come back to a club that treated him well through thick and thin, in that situ i think he’d be welcomed back with open arms) and we were the backup plan – in that case we don’t need someone like that coming back. But what do the rest of you think?

  62. dl says:

    @ rooney the new king
i don’t think it’s football snobbery as such – rather he got sucked in by the glamour of madrid and spanish football in general – madrid is the hollywood of football like LA is in the acting world with all the glitz and glam whilst english football especially up north is more raw and unpolished and therefore imo the more pure version of the game. What all players should realise is that like the movie world is, just because a film is made in hollywood doesn’t mean that it is a better film or more likely to win an oscar – quite the opposite a lot of the time especially once the novelty of these big blockbusters have run out (slumdog millionaire anyone?). I can see this happening to the la liga band wagon thing going on in 2-3 yrs time once the noviety/hype of madrid’s/barca summer spending has died down and the el classico becomes another big match of the norm in the world football calender as it all won’t be as shiny and new as it seems to the football world right now!

  63. Fred says:

Freudian slip – “I’m REALLY missing Manchester…” then realised he had said too much and quickly added “a little bit.”

He’s realised he’s made a huge mistake and that Madrid is a shithole. He’ll put in a transfer request and Madrid will have no choice but to sell him back to us at a knock-down price in January! Viva Ronaldo and MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!! :-D

  64. dl says:

    @ fred
that was no way a freudian slip in the way that you were thinking/hoping!
i’ll stick to my theory that it was a basic language/grammar from someone who’s english noticeably isn’t their first language!
plus i hope your taking the mickey with the january transfer comment (of course you must be) i’ll eat my hat if he signs back for us before 2020 – hell i’ll throw in my shoes if the unbelievable happens and he comes back before 2015 – the only way that he’ll leave/get sold by madrid in the next decade is if something was going to go dramatically wrong for him which is highly unlikely considering the man seems to grow 4 leaf covers in his back yard!

  65. dred says:

has anyone actually watched him this season

I wasnt his biggest fan when he was with us last season, though i still recognised his talent.

but honestly i think he has actually taken his game to a new level.

  66. Corea says:

Of course if you put me his videos on youtube i miss him. It is pretty much obvious to all of us. He is the leader in the Madrid team and it’s a fact.
But i was so excited when the seson started because it was very interesting to find out how our team handles his departure. i was excited to see our TEAM play develop. anyway we were spoiled in a way with success in the past years and some intrigue makes this year a very special one. Fergie is building another team and i hope 2010-2011 season we will DEFINITELY see firing on all cylinders mechanism.

    watch this video

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGRpFVvAIu4

    i do miss Saha.

    or another one

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gRN-v9lHl8

    i do really miss him.

  67. mufcdevils says:

at least he is not tevez

  68. Bob Koh says:

For now, we need defenders more than Ronny. Till we win the next 5 games to get back on track in the PL, I’m not going to even think of Ronny, much as I want him back. There, I said it!

  69. King Eric says:

gotta hate – Clues? You were in dialogue with them in the early hours!

  70. rooney the new king says:

@dl – then that illustrates my point it is football snobery, the magic of man utd is something very special it is a treasure, some dont realise how special it is. united is far more magical than anything that goes on at madrid oranny other club.

    – united is a club full of drama disappointment hardwork heartache ups and downs which is happening this season, that united fans get more cardiac arrests than any other fan sof other clubs, guys like ronaldo will never know that because he does not know what it is truly aboout.

    - 1999 sums up why I call united is a magical club it is a hollywood script, and that is why I think united is the worlds most special and the most exciting club because no one does it quiet like united, despite how poorly united are doing they are still better to watch than any other club, and not even arsenals overated football can match the magic of united. like the queen song goes its a kind of magic.

  71. MU for life says:

CR7 come back one day babe, we always welcome u , ur the best of bests….

  72. King Eric says:

rooney the new king – Spot on mate. United are a magical club.

  73. rooney the new king says:

@ King Eric – exactly thats why I support them and that is why wayne rooney wanted to come to united. chelsea liverpool arsenal milan inter barca and the fasciest just bore me 2 death united are far more magical. 1999 season put more fire in the belly for me supporting united, I dont call united the biggest club in the world I have a better name for united I call united the most magical club in the world.

    – can someone tell me has anyone had a more dramatic and epic season than what we had in the 98/99 season? has anyone noticed rooney will never be like steven gerard where he is starved for success he has had it all.

  74. Datnana says:

So ronaldo is better than kaka! ?

  75. NBI Red Onion says:

Come back Ronnie all is forgiven, great team without you but also would be great to have you here. Leave Real Madud and sun and come back to rainy Manchester. Amen.
