Wayne Rooney has remarkably claimed today it angers him when people question whether he really intends to stay at the club or not.

Just a few months ago, the player released an official statement saying he had no intention of getting in to talks to agree a contract extension with the club. He had a meeting with the club and decided Manchester United’s ambition did not match his own.

It is clear that Rooney was talking to other football clubs behind United’s back. Who hands in their notice before they’ve found a new job?

After apparently seeing the light and eventually signing the new deal, people have wondered whether he really intends to stay, or whether the club just wanted to get a bigger asking price for him, like they did with David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, who both made plans to join Real Madrid a year before leaving.

“I saw that, but I’ve never seen such rubbish in my life,” said Rooney. “My relationship with Sir Alex has no problems whatsoever. I’m enjoying my football here and if I was going to leave in the summer I wouldn’t have signed a new contract when I did. I’ve signed it and I intend to see it through to the end. You get angry when people question you. On Sunday I was on the way home from training. I stopped off at the garage to get petrol and a few people asked me if I was leaving in the summer. I didn’t know where it had come from. I said, ‘Where did you hear that?’ and he said it was in the newspapers. But I’ll be here until I’m well into my 30s. I signed a new contract to stay here and unless I’m ever not wanted then I’ll be staying here, that’s for sure. I admit I made a mistake like I’ve said lots of times, by saying I wanted to leave, but I’ve committed my future to United and I’m happy and my family are happy so there’s no reason for me to move elsewhere. I want to try and win more trophies and bring more success to this club.”

After spending years kissing our badge, telling us he wanted to be a United legend and claiming he was never going to leave, only to tell the world he wanted out, it’s understandable that fans and the press aren’t going to take him for his word anymore. Is Rooney angry that people don’t believe him anymore? Well, that’s a shame. I’m sure it’s very irritating. Still, it’s not as embarrassing and hurtful as the situation was for us but I can totally see why it would be annoying to have people asking whether you’re really going to stay or not wherever you go.

But maybe he shouldn’t have betrayed and been so dishonest to the club and fans that have done nothing but good for him since he was 18-years-old, then he’d have nothing to get angry about. He admits he made a mistake and now he has to live with the consequences of that.

This isn’t an issue of the mistake he made though. My issue is with him getting angry with the fans who question whether this time he’s actually telling the truth. How dare he get angry with a fan for thinking it’s possible he’s lying to us again. How anyone can think it’s acceptable for him to be angry with us for even questioning whether he’s being honest or not is beyond me. Bonkers.
