Wayne Rooney has again reiterated his love for our club, claiming he wants to spend the rest of his career here and hopefully get somewhere near Ryan Giggs’ appearance record.
“I have always said I would love to end my career at this club,” said Rooney. “If I can get anywhere near what Ryan has done it would be an amazing achievement because I regard him as the perfect role model. You must have great respect for the way his life is and the way he handles himself. The things he has done throughout his career and the things he has won are unbelievable. Everyone looks up to him and if I even get close to the number of games he has played I would be delighted.”

despite not winning any silverware (that crap fa cup final still makes me sick) in his first season, he’s won 6 major trophies and 1 community shield in the past 4 years alone!
its hard to remember how young he still is, having only turned 24 a few days ago. in fact, wayne is still 3 years away from reaching what fergie calls “a footballer’s prime age (27).”
if it weren’t for ronny’s ascendancy in the last 3 years as united biggest threat, rooney would have already been up for all the major individual honors and plaudits himself.
rooney’s blessing and curse so far has been his unselfishness and united first mentality. he plays out of position, tracks back, runs all over the pitch, and often looks to get his teammates involved before individual glory. it has helped ronny become the worlds’ best, and helped united build a new dynasty but his own goal scoring record and influence on games have been handicapped.
however, we have never seen a combination of talents like this in one united player.
i would argue that rooney possesses:
gary neville’s love, devotion, and passion for united
giggsy and scholes’ uncanny skill and technical ability
keano’s drive, toughness, and determination for united to win at all costs
and dare is say it- georgie best, robbo and king cantona’s “it factor” and talisman like personas.
the last step he needs to make is the consistency in willing the team to victory, the way ronaldo did in the last few seasons. once he starts to consistently “grab games by the scruff of the neck” as they say, the individual awards will start piling up for rooney the way the team honors already have.
paul scholes is my all-time favorite united footballer, but the one player i need to see in a united shirt in every match, regardless of form, is wayne rooney!

i agree with most that you posted mate apart from the ronaldo outshining rooney bit..they are basically the same age and ronaldo took that step ahead of rooney to become the best in the world..they both had the same ground to work from, maybe united tactics forced ronaldos development ahead of rooneys. i really do believe that someone has to beat ronaldos great season of 07/08 to be the best player in the world, messi might get it this year, but for me ronaldo is simply the greatest player by a country mile. never the less wazza is our future and i really hope he knocks ronnie of that perch at some stage, plus ronnie wants the personal awards whereas wazza plays for UNITED thats why i love him so much.

i wasn’t really trying to say that ronaldo had outshone wayne in the past 3 years, i just feel that rooney unselfishly let ronaldo have most of the moments for individual glory. he let him take all the pk’s, free kicks, and played out wide so that ronny could have more shots on goal up front.
i think that rooney could have scored the same amount of goals, had the same influence on the outcome of games, and won the same individual awards, had the roles been reversed.
the difference is that i don’t think ronaldo would have been a good 2nd fiddle player, the way rooney was and ronny might have destroyed team chemistry if he were forced to defer to wayne being the main threat.
individually i agree with ronny being the greatest player, but his ascendancy came at a price to his team’s success. ryan giggs once said that he felt ronny’s best year was 2006/2007. he scored less goals, but the team was bagging goals for fun in almost every game that season, and everyone was more involved due to his influence. after having his banner year of 2007/2008 with all the goals and awards, ronny rightfully became the world’s best. but last year the team’s goals dried up somewhat, and we all know what happened in rome. i don’t think the world’s best individual talent can still be the world’s best player if his personal needs make the team achieve less success than it should have.
wayne is well on his way to knocking ronny and messi of their perches, but he will do it with a team first mentality for both club and country.

It is so hard and sometimes very unnecessary thing to compare 2 players from the different leagues. Now both Ronnie and Lionel play in Spain and time will tell us the true story. But even then there are different seasons, injuries, circumstances. All this talk about who is the best helps you find some topics to discuss but this is a team sport and the players like Rooney, Scholesy, Hargo, Berba will always be my favorite and the TEAM consisting of this kind of players my favorite team.
