Rooney: There’s Something Wrong If I Don’t Beat Best Total

Wayne Rooney is currently the highest scorer in the league, whilst team mate Dimitar Berbatov, who has missed a month of the season through injury, is 13th.

He could have scored a hattrick last night against Wigan, hitting the woodwork twice as well as netting a goal.

Rooney has 15 goals in all competitions this season, so is just 8 goals short of equalling his best goal tally of 23 back in 06-07.

“I would hope to beat my best total,” said Rooney. “If I don’t get another eight goals from now until the end of the season there is something seriously wrong. I hit the post before I scored and the bar afterwards. I am doing well and I feel fit. Hopefully that will continue.”

We all know you’ll do it,wayne

  2. Xyth says:

A player of Rooneys ability should easily get 30 goals a season, but I would rather he performed better when it matters most, ie in matches when team is not playing well and we desperately need a hero.

  3. Costas says:

I don’t want to play the should game, but Wayne will probably surpass that. Over the years, he has been inconsistent in his scoring, but this season it’s all about him. He won’t sacrifice his attacking qualities for anything.

The season could have from 23 until 34 games left. Here’s hoping Wazza gets 30!

  4. mufcmyreligion says:

He’s always had the potential to be one of the top goalscorers in the league and I think this is the season he will realise his true potential. I like berba and he’ll obviously have his chance for the remainder of the season as dont see SAF bringing in any striker in Jan but unless he has a brill last half of the season I dont think he can line up alongside Rooney next August!

how many of the MUFC fans dare to bet that rooney ‘the white pele” will win the best player award this year???????

of course i will put my money on that……after witnessing the last match
he was frm another world…he turned..twisted..the defenders…he even tried a 35 yard screamer…if ….only if he continues 75% of the form with which he played aginst wigan for the whole season..i am damn sure he will win some individual award….HAIL ROOONEY!!!!! OH GOD LET HIS DREAMS COME TRUE….GLORY MUFC…..

I quickly read the title and for a second I thought he meant George Best, I guess a new pair of glasses are in order for the New Year.

  7. READ CAREFULLY WHAT I says:

Rooney gets better and better every game I cannot imagine how good this lad will be between the age of 26 and 30. He is still just warming up.

  8. OT says:

I just hope he doesn’t put too much pressure on himself which then leads to him getting easily frustrated and sloppy.

IF UTD can win the EPL title then he’d be a lock; if TheArse win then it will be Fabregas; if the RentBoyz win then it will be Drogba. For sure, it won’t be StevieGBH !

  10. cantona7 says:

against Wigan Rooney was immense. In the first half, Rooney was totally unplayable.

I’m just a little bit concerned with that comment, because if in his mind it is ok to just break his own record, than that is a small mentality. A player of Rooney’s caliber should be targeting the golden boots, and become the next King of OT.

  11. King Eric says:

He was fucking outstanding last night. Relishing the role of the main player. Unstoppable at the minute. How many United goals has he in total now? Must be well on his way up the list.

Staggering that people have doubted him of late. Someone was saying he isn’t World class. Of course he is. I would not swap him for ANYONE.

  12. United4eva says:

This will be a 30 goal season for Wayne Rooney.

  13. Costas says:

    King Eric

He is on 15 this season and 112 in total. He is 6 behind Ronaldo and 9 behind Andy Cole. I think he will surpass both this season.

  14. King Eric says:

Cheers Costas I knew I could rely on you for the stats. Impressive record and STILL only 24 years old.

  15. Costas says:

No problem King Eric. And he has 261 appearances. I don’t know how many appearances Ryan had at Rooney’s age, but I have faith in Wayne to become the club’s top goalscorer and the one with the most appearances. I just hope that as he gets older he takes care of himself like Ryan does. If he does that, we could be talking about 10 more years of vintage Wayne.

  16. King Eric says:

Costas – Agree mate. The only thing I would say though is that Giggsy has a completely different build and body shape to Wayne that he has kept in tip top condition. Hope Rooney’s body allows him to do the same.

  17. Costas says:

    King Eric

Yeah, that might be an issue since Giggsy never had any fitness issues. He has always been a great athlete and the only trouble he has had was with his hamstrings which he took care of. But I am hopeful that with moderne technology Wayne can remain free of major injuries from now on. It was a bit worrying that he suffered 3 metatarsals at such a young age.

Being the usual stat freak(even 18 minutes before the new year!), I searched on wikipedia for Giggsy’s appearances per season. He was on 261 at the age of 23, so there isn’t much in it…

  18. Lexxy says:

Dats my kinda player. Rooney is a complete united player, with united mentality not dat sulking berbatov

  19. Kings says:

I’ve always said that he’s got 30 goals in him, and this season he will achieve that. Hopefully Berba will chip in with 20 and Owen and Valencia will chip in with at least 15 each – all look capable of achieving that. Even Carrick with his ability to strike a ball sweetly has it in him to get 10. There’s a potential of 90 goals there and that’s not taking into account the contributions of Giggs and Fletcher.
