Whilst Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia are strong candidates for our player of the season, Wayne Rooney, who is surely in the running himself as our top scorer, has claimed that Danny Welbeck has had the best season.
“There are a few candidates for our player of the season, but I’d have to say Welbeck,” Rooney said. “To play so many games (34) for United in his first full season has been brilliant. There has been a lot of pressure on him but he has done really well and scored important goals. Danny has been brilliant and has spent a lot of time working on his finishing, which has paid off. He’s always a threat in the box, he’s quick and difficult to play against. He’ll become a great player, not just for United but England too.”
Welbeck has scored goals against Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham this season.

Man Utd News 24/7

He’s scored important goals yes, but a bit to inconsistent. He will learn and will become a massive player for us over the years. It has to be Rooney for me. Valencia has not played enough.
Always liked Danny, Contributes so much to the team. Hard worker!
A great breakout season for Danny. Like Scott mentioned, he’s scored in some big games too.
But player of the season? I think there are 3-4 better candidates.
No doubt great debut season for Welbz, but not our player of the season for me… Carrick, Valencia and even Evans ahead of him in that category in my opinion
Welbeck is a good player, but for me Valencia is the player of the season, a great powerhouse player which no one at Utd regrets buying him from Wigan.
Welbeck is definitely the player who has exceeded my expectations more than anyone this season. Valencia’s form for the past few months has been incredible, but he didn’t do an awful lot early on in the season.
In terms of consistency Michael Carrick has been our best player by a country mile. In past seasons he was consistently hitting 7/10s, this year he’s upped that to 8s and 9s every week with a few 10/10 performances in the mix too. He’s carried our midfield and without him we would be nowhere near where we are.
Rooney is also a good shout, but he went missing for a while in the middle of the season.
amazing that we can have up to 3-4 players in the running for player of the season.Had Nemanja been fit all season he would surely be there too! Really hope we get a decent creative mid in the summer.
Evans and Welbeck are improved players, but not the best this season. Carrick, Rooney and Valencia would be my picks.
wonder who will be in the premier league team of the year,or who should be,Silva and Mata haven’t been performing recently as well as Kompany.Rooney,Evans,Valencia and Carrick have all been consistent along with Vorm,RVP etc
Brilliant player – always was a fan since he came on this scene as a 17 year old
= big things will come from him at United!!
Tony V, Rio and Carrick would get my vote… Rio is back to his old self imo
I would love to say Welbz is the player of the season but I cant look past Jonny Evans. He has taken some right shit, me included but as I always say im here to be shot down and he has been absolute fucking class. He is the reason we are gonna win the league imho.
Agree with the majority here – he’s been amazing and it’s been great to see him breakthrough this year, however he’s definitely not our player of the season. Personally for impact it’s got to be Valencia, closely followed by Rooney. Evans, Carrick, Rio, Scholes have all been excellent too (more in the latter part of the season).
I’m a big fan of Evans, but he’s not been our best player. DDG and Rio have been more important in our back 5 IMO. De Gea’s saved so many games for us.
For true team players its Carrick & Evans for me, consistent all year while going under the radar, media can’t be bothered with them as they don’t create headlines, proper team players & both top footballers, great touch, composure, awareness.
Shame about tom c & ando, really looked like this was gunna be there year early season but for injuries, Tony v been top drawer of late & Rooney showing why the boss showed massive faith in him, for a first season Welbz has been excellent & showed glimpses of class for a young lad, over all it’s the United team spirit that’s shon through again,
Not a chance. Love the guy, but his finishing, as it stands, is substandard, and his all-round performance has been pretty poor in recent weeks. I still have every confidence he’ll turn into one of the league’s best though.
As for POTS, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If we go to Eastlands needing a point, either to win the title or to put us within touching distance, Jonny Evans has a chance to stake his claim. When Vidic got nobbled, I (and many others) really thought we were fucked. Evans has been immense and if he can keep out City’s strikers (which nobody’s done at the Shittyhad for over 20 games), then for me he’s our POTS.
Also, in our last 13 games, the only two we’ve lost (Bburn home, Newcastle away), Evans didn’t start. He started the other 11. Nuff said.
I would have to say carrick personally but vida and nani if fit all season could have been in there with the likes of evans rooney valencia etc.
I’d vote for David De Gea – no single player has been consistent over the course of the whole season but the key to winning close matches is preventing the opposition from scoring.
DDG might have been “nervous” and “inconsistent” during the first half but he has been one of the players who has powered TheLads to the tremendous New Year’s run of victories – along with TheGingerNinja, Michael Carrick, Jonny Evans, Rio, TheWayneBoy and Antonio Valencia.
DDG’s saves have been the key – especially that brilliant one that denied Juan Mata after UTD had fought back from a 3-nil deficit to gain a point at Stamford Bridge. THAT, for me, was the “moment of the season”; THAT showed that UTD were just not going to be denied # 20.
I find it impossible to pick one- this season has been such a team/ squad effort. United, literally.
Good for Rooney giving Danny recognition,as I said on another thread how Balotelli is rated at 25 mill and Danny 11 mill is beyond me,Danny going to be top quality
For me Tony V coming back from injury and Scholes coming out of retirement has been the reason Utd have gone on this run.I’d give player of the year to Tony V on current form has to be the best winger in the world and he’s doing it game in and game out
Funny how times have changed, Evans being nominated by a few on here…… Where are the bashers and doubters now?
I’ve always been impressed with welbeck. He’s filled with enthusiasm and energy, technically very good and is inventive, has definitely brought a different dimension to United’s attack and it’s no Suprise that rooney sees this more than most.
People say his finishing is “Substandard” but that’s due to lacking composure which will come with more games. 10goals is decent enough in his first full season, his all round ability has never been in doubt. top class all round player in the making.
Hahahahahahaha..

valencia player of the season!
welbz has been immense though…breakthrough year for him. he’s on a burgeoning partnership with wazza i hope that evolves into an even deadlier combo next season!
if united do win the league, you’d notice taht over the course of the season, many different players have risen to the occasion its not just one or two players carrying the team. evans, de gea, wazza, carrick, valencia have all played important parts
Tough choice this season, which is great, including older players like Carrick and ‘veteran’ Rooney, middling-age ones such as Valencia, and then the younger ones like Welbeck, Evans and even de Gea, all of whom have a claim. I won’t choose now, with nothing won, but I would say in favour of Welbeck that his energy, movement and will-to-win have all had an impact on what had become a far too static forward formation over the last couple of years. When Welbz is playing he’s constantly dragging defenders all over the place, opening up gaps for the others, as happened when he came on against Blackburn. Hernandez is also good for his movement but Welbeck is more aggressive and muscular, even if a less precise finisher. He’s also good at holding the ball and running at defenders to unsettle them , the ball ‘glued’ to his feet, a surprisingly rare ability in the modern, high-speed game. Welbeck needs to keep working on his decision-making and become more clinical in front of goal, but 34 appearences already this season shows just how important the young man has come to United, which must be fantastic for him as a life-long United supporter, and local lad.
bigphil – Hello mate. Spot on about Carrick pal but it seems a United fan called “Iniesta ” of all names on the Carrick thread strongly disagrees. Clown.
Evans, Tony, Carrick , Rooney and Welbeck for me have all been superb. Not to mention the last 3 months from De Gea who has been nothing short of excellent. Fair play to the kid too who took shit loads of abuse from the media and even United fans. He is one mentally tough bastard.
samuel – Spot on mate. Welbeck has plenty of time to gain composure. I wouldn;t say like kanchelskis said he has been poor in recent weeks. For me just the Fulham game where most were poor. I love Danny.
Giles – Spot on too mate about Welbeck. He is now a player that genuinely gets bums off seats when he is at running at teams. My Dad two year ago said he was shit and rarely admits when he is wrong but he now loves Welbeck.
One of the most overated players in England , can’t control a ball , and his finishing is woeful to say the least, can believe utd fans adore him , berbatov is a far better addition to utd.@ king Eric – when does wellbeck run at teams ? He’s mostly on the floor , I’d sell him in the morning personally .
By far Valencia is our player of the season!! A class above Evans, Welbeck, Rooney and the others
Valencia, carrick and Evans for me. I’d say carrick is MVP given his consistency. Would’ve said Valencia but he didn’t feature for the team early on in the season.
DDG is up there too. Improved no end. More a squad effort this season, though. With the boss pushing the lads on.
Mark its cowardice and easy going onto other fans websites, writing shit and staying anonymous, why don’t you let us know which team you support
Hi King Eric, greetings, me old pal. I’m the opposite of your Dad, I rarely admit when I’m right (ha, ha) …but I’ve long liked young Danny Boy. As for running at players, he’s been doing it right from the start, when he was just a raw kid, such as his gutsy performance in the Carling Cup Final v Spurs. He just kept on running at them down the wing, even when they hacked him down. He does the same now through the middle, which is very unusual, something we haven’t really had for a while, and it rattles defenders into errors. He’s one of the reasons we’re top scorers in the League , so far, despite only having Rooney as a real top-ten goalscorer. It’s true Welbz was poor against Fulham, and made some sloppy errors v Rovers, but I hope he’s used to ruffle up QPR.
I want to say Tony v but for me he is popped by Evans . The strength of character the lad has shown against criticism has been admirable . He has shown the strength of character indicative of united.
Giles @ 15:57: “He does the same now through the middle, which is very unusual, something we haven’t really had for a while, and it rattles defenders into errors.”
Great point – defenders just hate it when they are subjected to a direct attack. It’s what makes Antonio Valencia and Chicharito such potent threats – and I really would like to see TheWayneBoy, Nani and Ashley Young go for the jugular, too (these two guys often turn back when they should drive forward).
Driving forward might not work all the time but it scares the shit out of a defender and gives the attacking player that little bit of extra time
i see welbeck as the raw c.ronaldo when he was in his first year here. made a lot of mistakes but kept on improving all the way. i would give him 2-3 years more years and we will have a top goalscorer.
but player of this season? i don’t think so.
@ Giles Oakley
Very correct on Welbeck’s movement . Rooney is talking from his insider perspective. He has long know of Valencia’s capability and what Tony V. brings to the team. Tony V. has been launching crosses and terrorizing defenders for a while. He has turned it up a few notches this year. His absences due to injury has forced Rooney and Welbeck to forge a better understanding up the middle of the pitch. Welbeck’s movement is usually excellent and like Tony V. he forces defenders to commit and creates space . He can be an exceptional passer in close quarters ( this will become more apparent to the pundits later) but must continue to develop in that area.
With Welbeck improving (with SAF riding his ass) and becoming more clinical in the box , Cleverly , Chica, and Rooney our attacking element will rival and surpass that of Real Madrid’s.
Giggs12- I agree. His defending has been awesome. How he must have felt post city game at OT one can only imagine. He overcame intense criticism which he must have been aware of. Vid out and it was sink or swim for him. He made the grade fergie always knew was there. Tony v goal at bb is the strike if the season for me but Evans scoring brings a lump to my throat. So pleased for the lad.
Overall this “team in transition” has improved significantly. And as I said before , the EPL IS NOT ready for what we are about to do to them.
Giggs12 – feel the same re Evans . If he had not taken up the defensive mantle we would have conceded more and dropped points. With vid out he had a choice . Sink or overcome the intense criticism and become the player fergie always knew he was. Tony v goal last weekend may be goal of the season for me but Evans scoring is my favourite .
LoneStarRed @ 16:53: ” the EPL IS NOT ready for what we are about to do to them.”
I feel the same way BUT I’ve been afraid to say it before ! One new addition needed – a box-to-box midfielder, someone to take up the “football genius” mantle that’s been unused since DarrenFletcherinho succumbed to ulcerative colitis.
That was very generous of Rooney. It’s further evidence of his growing maturity.
To me the answer is obvious. Most of the times that we are out of ideas are when Rooney is not on the field. Neither Welbeck or Chicharito or Berbatov can lead the line on their own. When Rooney is not there, we often don’t connect up very well. When he is there we become fluid. When he is on the field with Scholes we start looking like we are bossing the play.
Yes I know the others are all good too, but Rooney is the one that we suffer without.
On another note – you notice how he is growing out his new hair on top? He must be pleased with it!! Any longer and it’s gonna start looking like a rug!! I say that out of love!!
Giles. Hello my friend. Well to be honest mate my old man doesn’t always admit when he is wrong! I think the turning point for him was when he watched Sunderland at the Bridge last season and he tore them to pieces.
Mark. I think Wayne is right. The other day you were busying yourself about how we will fall when Fergie retires now you come up with a frankly ludicrous suggestion that Danny is the most over rated player in ingerlund. No offence but absolute bollocks pal. He is fucking 21 for fuck sake and in his breakthrough season at a BIG club has bagged ten goals. Do you even watch him? I suspect not else you would know he is always running at players and creating space. Come back in two years when Danny will be one of the best about. Did you see his debut goal at 17? A thirty yard screamer against Stoke. No probably not. Over rated my arse. He is the natural partner for Rooney now. Ridiculous post.
Oh and you would sell him in the morning. Fuck me. A local lad doing great things but you would sell him says it all. I reckon you prefer your flavour of the month rentboy greedy cunts. How can ANY United fan want him sold? Fucking daft.
I’d sell Danny in the morning and buy Andy Carroll.
Fuck me.
@ Denton agree on the box to box CM except we need TWO not one. Why? Squad rotation and injuries. That could be Pogba plus one as he and Cleverly have an excellent understanding. Or if he leaves then two others. Perhaps a defender as well but we plan on massive possession so there will no be a huge need for four at the back, methinks three and a marauder like Evra.
Three Spanish teams in the Europa finals. Barca’s play (minus the dubious nay WRONG ref calls) forces many to up their game , not just us.
Carrick, Evans, Valencia and Rooney are the contenders for the award IMO.
But for me, one of the best things about this season has been Danny Welbeck. There’s nothing better than seeing a local lad come through the ranks, all the way through the system, and into the first team. For him to then have the impact that Danny has had…..makes it even better.
As King Eric said, he gets bums off seats and genuinely excites. And as Sir Giles pointed out, he’s had a real impact on the way we play, as he combines both technical ability with energy. The fact that he’s comfortable coming deep to link play up, playing on the shoulder of the last man, or out wide…gives us real flexibility. Its no coincidence that our best spells of form have been when him and Rooney have been up top. And out most uninspiring spell of form (November when we lacked creativity and couldn’t score more than a goal per game) came when he was out injured.
As I said, I wouldn’t see him winning the Player Of The Year Award this season, but he’s been an absolute revelation. Hopefully he keeps going until the end of the season, and then makes an impact for England at Euro 2012 as well, would be brilliant to see.
He’s done better than I expected, but player of the season? Nah.
Probably Rio or Jonny for me.
Dont agree on that one. Welbeck has good games but in the main he gets far to involved in the setup play and shows a lack of confidence to shoot.
The guy has a physical strength but very rarely uses it… he’s like the opposite of Mark Hughes… he needs to go out like he believes he should be there and do his job which is score goals on a consistent basis.
To be honest picking him above Hernandez, based on his performances is a joke and has affected Hernandez’s performance too. Sure if you want to give Chico a rest or if he’s injured then yes but not when they are both fully fit.
Players of the season is 1 out of Evans…Valencia…De Gea
All three have been the key in defence and attack which has meant that we are in a position to compete.
I agree it looks like a sign of maturity for Rooney to highlight Danny’s contribution this season so far.
It’s been great to see him play so many games after his spell at Sunderland. I too saw that performance for them against Chelsea last season and even though it came at a time when Hernandez was on fire, I was looking forward to this season because of our options up front.
It’s maybe relevant to remember that Danny and Javier have only played together this season (and last season’s U.S tour) whereas the rest of the team are coming up to the close of their 2nd season familiarizing themselves with Chicha’s play. We might see an improvement in the Hernandez – Welbeck partnership over time, even though having Rooney in the miz would normally be plan A.
The early part of the season (when we played that fast, short passing style) was exciting because we had new signings and youngsters gelling with the regulars, but we looked different. Can’t put my finger on it, but that way of playing brought us convincing wins over Arsenal, Spurs, Bolton, Barcelona etc and pretty much anyone we faced was put to the sword until the uncertainty at the back started. That early season form had a lot to do with Welbeck, in my view. His and Cleverly’s understanding as a result of playing together since age 11 (?) was plain to see. The one-twos and knowing each other’s movement helped create some cracking goals and I hope the boss hasn’t abandoned that way of playing.
valenciaaaa
rooney
welbeck has been impressive but valencia…just carries united through some pretty dead beat games. hes a top player
