Ashley Young played his first game for Manchester United last night in our 4-1 win over New England Revolution at the start of our US Tour.
Wayne Rooney has claimed that our new player has settled in well and will help bring more success to the club in the future.
“Ashley has settled in well,” said Rooney. “Everyone knows what Ashley is capable of. He put some excellent crosses in tonight and we are looking forward to playing a few more games with him. We have an exciting young team now. Hopefully we can bring more success to the club.”
Last night’s game stood at 0-0 at half time, before Federico Macheda, Michael Owen and Park Ji-Sung scored four goals after Rooney was substituted. Rooney welcomes this competition for places though, as it will only improve the performances of our strikers.
“Competition is good,” he said. “It keeps everyone on their toes. It is exciting to have so many strikers. It means everyone will have to be on top of their game to keep their place in the team.”

Thirst!
Good to see Macheda back and doing well
Great job lads. Keep it up..Kiko will be a star!
Settled in well…..??? He’s played one fucking game against Boston FFS!
Great goal from Park and great interview from Kiko afterwards he seems to have lost his chip off his shoulder maybe. The grass is not always greener and he now appreciates where he is by the sound of things.
Young on the left does not bode well for Nani but clearly gives us options across the forward line!
@ Red Devil..
FFS………. if rooney has trained with Young and seen how he has adapted to moving to united i would take his opinion as good inside information!
somehow the no. 18 shirt dont look nice on him. it makes him look even smaller than he already is
Is it just me, or is his shirt way too large?
Trevor
Mate, the comment was strictly tongue-in-cheek….in case you didn’t notice the smiley at the end….!
Whats not to settle down…he’s already played in the premiership for 4 seasons, played with a lot of the united players in international football so why wouldn’t he settle down. But having said that, its just been a few training sessions that the team has been together, so I wouldn’t say he’ SETLLED down in THAT sense..if you knwo what I mean.
Also, as for believing everything that Rooney says….I think the recent past tells us we shouldn’t be.
With the new players, I think MU will walk away with the title come May next year, and probably the Carling Cup and/or the FA cup too. They’ll likely go to the CL final too (esp. if they do sign Wesley Sniper) and if they don’t meet Barcelona there, then they’ll also win the CL.
Obertan did well to set up Park’s goal. Hope he can always play this way.
United seal deal for Sneijder!!
http://football-talk.co.uk/30936/reports-united-chief-seals-35m-sneijder-deal-2/
@daryl, Gotta agree there. I remember slim saying the same thing after Young had immediately got the number and I just kind of knew that football is not sentimental without squad numbers and I thought it wouldn’t be a big deal for me.
But the knowledge that the former wearer of that number retired just a season ago makes it even more odd for us. It just doesn’t sit well and that is what slim was saying that day I guess.
Anyways, I was always a supporter of Young when he was linked with us and am happy that he was signed. He will be a regular on the left because that is the main reason he was signed in the first place. He’s already established enough that it is not going to take any time for him to settle in with the team mates whom he will know from the England setup also. Good Luck to him in the pre-season.
Give it a rest Speedy.
hmm… is park playing in cm role?
It is impossible not to be sentimental about the No 18.
It is a bit like driving past a house you used to live in and seeing someone else living there.
He HAS to do that number proud. I think he will.
Should be 7 … why owen got 7 i’ll never know.
Although i like owen and he is a great finisher, hope to see him more this season.
He hates scousers
Ash will come Good. But am not yet excited until a CM is Sïgned
Yung is the type of player we need
Could be a major player for United, if we don’t sign a CM this summer. He can play in that central position.
BRING ON SNEIJDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fans have got to get over numbers over the years alot of legends have worn many different numbers retire them all current players would be in the 40′s ffs
So…guys does that makes Mr Rooney happy now? No more transfer request due to lack of investment in the team I supposed….
Unfortunately i wasnt able to watch the match yesterday, so could anyone fill me up on how did Young play?
On the other hand just like to say that i for one have beleived that Young is a fine accquistion and is going to be a valuable asset which will give us a lot of flexiblity in our attacking options.Last season just proved how much our current play relies on the wingers whipping in good crosses. So in cases of fatigue, injuries and loss of form Young is an excellent buy.
Again SAF no can best you. Just the thought that the scousers have spent 75 million on players with one international goal and a handful of caps between them makes me LMFAO
That’s good to know. It feels bizarre seeing the number 18 shirt on someone else, but that’s life.
We are really spoilt for choice on the wings. My sentimental favorite, Park, won’t be a pushover by the way.
He was brilliant last night. As was anderson
@Costas hi mate love park aswell, don’t know how much playing time giggs will get,him a park have devolped a great understanding, nice move and finish last night.Sir alex knows his value, the lad is very quiet and not flashy so gets overshadowed, major component of this team
ALL my shirt were w SCHOLES 18 It would take me a life time to get use seeing that famous red shirt w YOUNG 18 at the back!! SOO UNFAMILIAR! hehehe…my future kit probably empty …
Wesleyyyy Sneijder!!!……
@wayne
Hi buddy. Hope you are well. Recently Park likes to come inside and link up with the strikers outside the box. His goal last night came from such a move, as did 3-4 of his goals last season. People knock him for not being creative enough, but his movement and close range passing is key in opening up defences. Whether it’s Rooney, Berba or Giggs, players combine well with him. No doubt he will be one of the first players on Fergie’s team sheet once the C.League knock out stages begin.
As for Giggs, I didn’t watch last night’s game, but I have a feeling that with so many options on the wings, Giggs will only operate as a midfielder from now on.
@Costas agree mate, some are making a issue of him not being offered a extension,i just think its a case of the player wanting to stay, utd wanting him to stay so its a non issue and will get done this season.with his all around attitude and what he brings to the team no upside in letting him go,wouldn’t make any sense
Them crosses Young was putting in would get gobbled up by Hernandez.
I must admit last night I felt that Ashley was coming inside a but too much. He seemed very predicatable in that he would get so far, stop, shimmy and then cut onto his right everytime. I would hope that as he settles in he can offer a bit more in the way of variation.
That said Antonia gets away with everyone knowing what he is going to do and in fairness Ashley did get a few decent crosses in.
Just my opinion
It I wasn’t mistaken last night, I could’ve sworn we saw a few dangerous crosses get swung in from corners on the left.
United dangerous from set pieces again? Say it ain’t so. To steal a line from Staind: “It’s been a while.”
Welcome Ashley. Work on that left boot of yours and you’re all set. Laid a peach of a cross to the back post that as someone previously mentioned, a certain Mexican hitman would’ve salivated over.
Young, Nani, Valencia? Embarrassment of ritches I’d say.
I was there, row 1 in the midfield section. Was lucky enough to watch them train the day before as well. Yes, they were playing the worst MLS team (who looked to be intimidated as hell btw). However, the speed, touch, and movement were superb. Young was absolutely brilliant. After the game, Rio was timing 40 yd sprints, amazing.
was it just me or did Obertan look like he had bulked up on his size/weight in the off season.
From SAF:-
Rumors abound that Ferguson wants to bring in Inter midfielder Wesley Sneijder, but the manager says “there’s absolutely nothing at all to that. First of all, I don’t think Inter Milan are prepared to sell him anyway. But you get conjecture and you get speculation every week in newspapers, unfortunately. And you have to answer these for some reason — why I don’t know. But we have to still find a reason without adding insult to any particular club or embarrassing any particular player. That’s just the way it happens and there’s nothing we can do about it.”
Ferguson could be playing coy. But the squad won’t lack for players who share his hunger for titles.
Rooney is one such exponent. He is a finely honed, highly creative player who could get by on his technique alone, but he also logs long hours on the training pitch and in the gym. He is the game’s great juxtaposition: a finesse-player trapped in a bouncer’s body. And he, too, is forever lusting after the next shiny trophy. “It’s something which this club breeds into you, really — you need to look forward rather than look back,” he says with a disarming smile. “The feeling you get from winning trophies is incredible. But the trophies I have won, to be honest, are at the back of my mind. Of course, it’s something I’ll look back on when I finish playing and be proud of different things, but now I have to look forward to the season and hopefully I can help the team win more trophies.”
Eyes on the prize. Correction: prizes. “It’s a demand on all of the players,” says Rooney. “We’re expected to win trophies. We need to try and create more history for the club, so that’s what we look to do.”
When the club sold Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 for 80 million pounds, many demanded that Ferguson run out and spend all of the money, but he insisted that there wasn’t good value in the market and held off.
“Worry about yourself,” says Ferguson. “Try to achieve. Try to get a percentage of improvement ourselves and progress. And sometimes that’s a detail, just a small detail — it could be 1 percent, it could be 2 percent. That’s the way we look at it.”
“I think you can’t waste time or energy worrying about what other teams are doing,” echoes Rooney. “We need to concentrate on ourselves. We have to keep doing what we’re doing and we know if we do that we’ll keep winning trophies.”
That winning tradition continues to be a big draw for players. “As soon as I heard of the interest I just wanted to come to the club and get the paperwork signed and get out there and start training,” says Young. “As a player, you always want to set your standards high and play in the biggest competitions at club level. Man United do that year in and year out.”
That mystique probably does half the work. Its manager does the rest. “I think while he’s here, we’ll always be in the hunt to win trophies,” says Rooney.
But what happens when the manager finally retires? It’s a thought United had best not entertain.
Comment is Sneider worth 35M and 220K per week – is it good value.
Frightening to think of life at OT without “THE GOD FROM GOVAN”.
UNITED 20/4/12 – 2012
I was impressed by Young. It’s early days yet, of course. Yet his interplay with the others was impressive, his crosses were generally good, he certainly knows how to go past his man, and made some intelligent passes too. And he can play either side. Someone said this poses competition for Nani? Why? How many times does it need to be said that we play a rotational system?
In fact, I am looking forward to seeing Nani and Young play together, as we might see them switching around. They can both play left or right, can both use either foot. They can both go outside their man or cut inside and track across. (And no, I haven’t forgotten Tony V. Like I said, it’s a rotational game.)
Obertan looks like he has beefed up. He also looks like he’s finally getting his “tricks” to the required level. The trouble with step-overs and the like is that unless they’re slick and ‘natural’, they just don’t work plus they look silly. CR was like that in his early days, as was Nani. Both worked at it until they got it right. Obertan may be getting there too. His lead up play for Park’s goal was superb. But what followed was even better — that move between Park and Giggs was superb. That one touch by Giggs was pure class.
Can we end the Barca obsession already?
http://unitedbanter.blogspot.com/2011/07/united-are-no-chasers.html
Scott, with the money United have spent this close season,do you now realise dat our no-show in past transfers is due to Ferguson & not the Glazers.cut them some slacks, the Glazers have the interest of United at heart, though from a business sense & i see absolutely wrong in that
Welcome to United Ashley…It looks like its going to be more of the Ashley,Nani combination on the Wing. they both have the goals in them and pose a greater threat in attack.
Great Days Ahead For A Great Club
we have signed a good player..
i love man utd
