Scholes: Hopefully Eric Will Overshadow Me

Ahead of his testimonial in August, Paul Scholes has joked that he hopes Eric Cantona, who is returning with the New York Cosmos, steals the limelight on his big day. Scholes is known for being a painfully shy person and will welcome Cantona’s presence as it will take some of the attention away from him.

“The plan was for Eric to come back and overshadow me,” laughed Scholes. “Hopefully everyone will be concentrating on him and I can just mosey off somewhere and be out of the way. Seriously, the Cosmos are just getting back together again and it seemed a sensible thing to do. He was a big influence on a lot of the United lads’ careers. We grew up watching him and then trained with him. He led by example and it will be great to have him back.”

    Typical Scholes :)

  2. Kings says:

Quiet reserved lad off the pitch. A genius on it. The most complete midfielder.

  3. FletchTHEMAN says:

    OH AH Cantonaaaaa!

Heard it is already a sell out. Top man Scholes. I hope the club honor him, nev and giggsy with a new trinity statue as well.

  4. Rai says:

There won’t be another quite like him. Absolute genius.

  6. Fred says:

Even the Return of the King couldn’t overshadow you on your big day, Scholesy boy. :D

  7. Utd4life says:

  8. Gotta hate tiny tears says:

  13. slim says:

i am already missing the ginger prince. watched the interview on Taking all of this quite seriously so i can’t say mcuh, except what everyone’s already said. Legend

  14. MG says:

I saw that interview and realised

That Paul Scholes has finished – it sunk in today and it’s hard

Mere mortals wear shirts – but one above all others is a symbol of defiance

Number 18 wore such a shirt

  15. FletchTHEMAN says:

Thing about a new trinity statue would be to keep it focused on the ’91-’92 youth sides.
Giggs, Nev, Scholes epitomize the most exceptional aspects of that group, but all humble enough to share credit. One idea would be to have plaques around the statue with memories and awards of the other players, from that group.
    Giggs, Nev, Scholes
    All, United home grown
All with 18+ years with the team
All with Links to the 91 92 youth teams
All won at least 8 EPL titles
All won the lot, (FA, CS, CL, WCC)

  16. giggsalot says:

    got my tickets

  17. captaink9 says:

I won’t sink in till next season not seeing Scholes pull on a shirt. Legend..

  18. slouchie1472 says:

Forever the king of the understatement……….loved the ginger king ever since he bagged those 2 goals against Port Vale knew he was gonna be somethin special but nowhere near the scale he did become.

Paul Scholes he scores goals…we will miss you

  19. Rai says:

I’m surprised but very happy he’s going to be a coach. Technically the best player we have had in my generation. He has a lot to offer…

  20. seanmthered says:

The best player in my young lifetime to wear the United shirt, his consistency, loyalty, genius determination and the whole understatement of the man and the way he played the game was a pleasure once i got a bit older i grew to appreciate him. My favourite United player of all time for all of what i’ve just mentioned I feel he always will be if it makes any sense a player i always connected with and really loved, he didn’t do too bad for a small ginger lad with asthma :) . Hope I can come over from Dublin for the testimonial in August Scholesy from the bottom of my heart thank you for everything you’ve given this brilliant club and all of us supporters you’re a legend and a top bloke wish you all the best in the future… UNITED!

  21. King Eric says:

Thanks for the last seventeen years Paul. A proper legend. Just shows the contrast between him and becks. Scholsesy shy as fuck barely looking the interviewer in the eyes. When asked what he thought about all the tributes from Xavi Zidane etc he said “its nice but embarrassing really“. Straight after sky go to Becks and he is there playing to thousands in a crowd doing a speech. None of that bollocks for Paul. Just so pleased he will remain in a coaching capacity. Loved the way he said he sliced the ball against Barca and that his goal was “a bit scruffy“.

  22. the scottish wonder says:

Man Utd will probably have one of the best u-23 team in europe next season:

    De Gea
    Rafael Jones Smalling Fabio
    Obertan Cleverly Anderson Welbeck
    Macheda Hernandez

Bench: Evans, Morrison, Pogba, Tunnicliffe, Amos, Gill, King

  23. napstar says:

Scholes will be missed. He is genuine United Legend.Speaking of legends, checkout this lovely tribute to VDS”

  24. Red Devil says:

Scholesy my love….Huge man crush on this guy…in a Gary Nev kind a way only! 8)

  25. Ash says:

We will miss you LEGEND but I am happy he will be coaching our young guys.

  26. Balaji Sivaraman says:

Sometimes it doesn’t sink in hard really because we don’t think about it that much. But when I have the time, I think about the new United and suddenly realize that we are not going to see Neville, Scholes, Van Der Sar and, someday, Giggs in a United shirt. Of course, the same thing happened when Butt, Phil, Becks and Keano left. So, I’ve been used to that but when it really sinks in, that is when it hurts the most.

Imagine once Scholesy’s testimonial match is complete, everybody will be waiting for him to give a speech and all that. Scholesy will probably be in his car on his way home to his wife. ;)

  27. andsolskjaerhaswonit... says:

It is difficult knowing that this guy won’t be playing for us anymore. What a gent, What a player. Paul Scholes, you’ll be missed.

  28. andy_19_george says:

total legend! best player of my generation without a doubt & so down to earth…puts most other footballers to shame…love him!

  29. manc_sam says:

Paul Scholes Songs For 90 Minutes, FACT !

  30. FULLARD says:

I think after this game we will start to look at Cantona as a possible Fergie replacement… it makes sense to me… he’s the leader of our football team.

  31. Northstander says:

What a crazy season, from the high of winning the 19th title to the low of losing Scholesy and G Nev to retirement and finding out Giggsy isn’t the man we thought, emotional rollercoaster or what?!
Will be interesting to see how he handles the attention, no chance of Eric overshadowing him, will be great to see the King back but Scholesy it’s your night. Agree with @manc_sam Scholes songs for 90mins, well 85mins Eric does have to get a mention!

  32. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

    Fat hope Scholesy!

  33. Notey90 says:

    Love SatNav to da bone!
