Paul Scholes has previously been very damning of the current England set up, believing that the players are too pampered.
Scholes has claimed another damaging element was the rivalry between United and Liverpool players, with the dislike between them effecting the atmosphere.
“There is a big rivalry between clubs in this country and it isn’t healthy when you go away on international duty,” he said. “When I was with England, there was always a lot of United players and Liverpool players in the squad and it was obvious that some of our lads didn’t like some of their boys and some of their lads didn’t like some of us.”

Man Utd News 24/7

Does anyone like scousers?
Yeah, can’t imagine the Neville’s being busom buddies with Gerrard and Carra somehow
yeah well said
Still doesn’t excuse how shit this team has performed in major tournaments.
Too much hatred in this country for england to ever succeed, they arent united as players and we are united as supporters. I fucking hate basically the entire england internation team (bar our lads ofcourse) and i couldnt give a flying fuck about the happiness of the rest of the nation.
I support england when it comes to rugby, i’ll support england when it comes to cricket, but football? not a fucking chance. Fuck the FA and fuck the ingurlanders.
Its Manchester above everything for me, Republik of Mancunia.
So that’s it confirmed. England haven’t won anything because Gerrard and Terry are cunts. We all knew that.
@mufcok
fking round of applauds..well said son, couldnt of said it better mesen ..:P
LMAO. stevie the cunt is always jealous. he knew he was never gonna be ANYWHERE NEAR you. and he knows that he isn’t better than rooney. the best scouse player on the planet. His jealousy is understandable.
Too much hatred you say and yet here you are declaring your undying hate for the England squad. Lol. I guess you never will win anything and our players will never be taken seriously.
My opinion, a lot of egos on there. If Barcelonal players can get on well with Madrid players and win a world cup and Euro tournament what the fuck is Englands problem. I get what Scholes is saying but when you represent you country you put that shit away, because at that moment in time in that context thats exactly what it is, shit
That was the problem with Spain for a long time. The Barcelona and Madrid players didn’t see eye to eye. Once that was resolved, they started performing at tournaments. England’s issues a lot deeper than that though.
At the end of the day all players, Scholes included should have been professional enough to put club differences apart and give 100% in every England game.
I would say the real reason for England’s failure is the cult status and superstar antics of the big players who all think they are extra special because they earn millions a year and are pampered like divas. It wouldn’t surprise me if the players sat in the dressing room thinking to themselves why am I here, my club pays me and looks after me, I don’t need to be here, I could be cheating on my partner or driving around in my new super car instead.
It’s shit like that makes me glad Rio, Wazza, Becks et al didnt quit international football wen gettin fucked over by the FA n England fans. They obviously played on to keep fuckin up any chances for future tournaments. Good lads
WillieRedNut
however deep anyone thinks the problem is, the sooner they resolve it the better.
Those farcalona fellas think they are a different country mate, it doesn’t run deeper than that
slim – I was thinking in terms of players, tactics, shit managers etc….
i think rooneys a scouser so you all hate him?
WillieRedNut
well there’s that as well, but ffs its been terrible.then again MUFCOK may be onto something , if 6-7 of the outfield players were United, the’d probably go far. As it is no one should hold their breath. Super Frank is back now apparently, watch as he becomes the messiah again. fucking joke
good point Paul, United > England………forever!
Let’s show “’66, NEVER AGAIN” banner at wembley then…..
Jesus that’s a lame excuse. what was the climate of 66′ world cup winners, all the clubs had on rivalry and everyone was best pals. England problem is they fear too much. watch any game, players body language all wrong, sometimes , well a lot of times, completely a better side than their opponents but the players start shiting a brick. as a pool fan, I actually like Paul scoles, like cara he is honest and upfront, which is all we want from players, But he can be a bit sensationalist on the VERY rare occasions he speaks. I think yes rivalry between the players is there but its put behind for internationals. watch any goal celebration an united an Liverpool players are embracing etc- I think goal celebrations tell you stuff about the dynamics of a team.
I know what Scholes means and I am a Liverpool fan. I remember in the World Cup, England vs Portugal. Ronaldo was gunning it down the right and Neville was out of position. Gerrard had to chase him down the right and put in a world-class tackle. He immediately got up and went after Neville telling him WTF is he doing. Lol. I wouldn’t have seen him do that to Carragher though.
internationals are such a waste of time. who really cares for them. seriously.
Keep the Rivalry going. I wouldn’t care if Gerrard broke a neck. He absents himself from England duty just cuz United is coming to town… Roll on the next game and lets put the scouse to the sword. . LUHG . . . GGMU Keep the Rivalry going. I wouldn’t care if Gerrard broke a neck. Speaking of England, it’s really sad that after all the crap that went down over the captaincy, Capello is the one that’s forcing Rio out of the side. I realize that some players want to contribute to their national side no matter what, but Ferdinand should have seen the writing on the wall 2-3 years ago.
Well presented analysis by Paul Scholes.Any team divided against himself may not win anything. It is obvious that England is not united.
Slim – different mentality in Spain. It’s almost bred into us at early ages – if you support United, you MUST hate Liverpool, if you support Arsenal you detest Spurs etc. So when you get some of these diehard fans growing up and representing their boyhood teams (insert Robbie Keane joke here) then there that inherent feeling if never gonna go away. That’s why GNev is the way he is, that’s why Gerrard is the way he is etc. We are a nation of people that take things FAR too far when it comes to football. I mean, I love United as much as all of you guys, but I ain’t gonna fight someone or not be friends with someone just because they don’t, and I think that’s why the Spanish get along away from the pitch and the cameras.
Easy solution – don’t pick ‘em. No seriously what Scholes meant was that international duty was always a problem because players would have their cars nicked, hotel rooms pilfered and suffer random attacks when they played music that wasn’t to everyone’s taste. Couple that with the risk of career ending tackles in training, you can see why out boys couldn’t wait to get back home.
That said, if a country like Spain, whose issues (different languages, regional identities, fighting for independence I.e. the Basque region and the fact that Catalonia even plays it own “National Team” with some Barca players taking part) when integrating players runs far deeper than ours can produce champions then it can be done anywhere.
But I defy anyone to concentrate on an international break when JT is mysteriously withdrawn from the squad. You might be sat in a hotel room in Azerbaijan, but where is he? It’s like a Russian roulette but with WAG’s!
Perhaps the rivalry scholes refers to only happened between two or three players during his time. It isn’t necessarily there now. you can imagine players like Fowler and Mcmaniman causing problems with red Nev and Becks. Now most of that kind of personal hatred has gone. Gerrard and Rooney are good friends and how many English Liverpool players does the rivalry matter to anyway. Although this rivalry may have not helped England’s cause it was only a small part of England’s major problems. To much hype too much shit from the FA too many crap managers and too many primadonas playing for themselves. United > England.
Good morning ROm,
fuck the scouse scums
infact England club football has made them larger than life and thats where the problem starts from..
this, in no way, explains the utterly miserable performances on the grand stage…. look at spain…. the only thing the players are yet to do in a classico is kill each other…. and they are the current world and european champions….
They need to stay united, determined and consistency to win anything. If not, it would be the same old story all over again…They need to stay united, determined and consistency to win anything. If not, it would be the same old story all over again…
Now that someone has mentioned celabrations the celebration of England goals is usually subdued except for guys who are excited about breaking into the team or scoring their first goals such as Young and Welbeck. It doesnt compare to the celebrations at respective clubs or even to the Cricket team where you can see its really teamwork and passion for the country.
England need to revive the passion for the National Team by winning a tournerment its hard to keep fans interested when you never win anything. When was the last time they won anything??
@ Chcihagiggs
” Look at spain…. the only thing the players are yet to do in a classico is kill each other…”
classic line mate
Good Morning ROM!
To me, I see similar problems for the English football team as I do for the Indian cricket team. You can almost draw direct parallels between both of them: Political/Regional divides in India is simialr to Club/Regional divides in England; By far the worst sporting administrations though they have the richest boards in their respective sports; Player power far exceeds Management power – If you drop Sachin in India, you should be prepared to face the wrath of God himself which is similar to the case with dropping Fat Frank, Cunterry etc. You can draw a lot more correlations than that. as well and they all add up to the ongoing problems with the best sports in the respective nations.
Then again, we did win the World Cup which was good news, but the recent tour of England proved that there’s a long way to go yet! However, unlike Cricket where India is a dominant force and other world powers have gone backwards (with the exception of England) which means we will still win a few here and there; football is filled with other European nations who are much better than England at the moment.
IMO, unless the entire administrative structure is changed in both countries, there is no chance to winning anything worthwhile in the foreseeable future. The entire top-down structure needs an overhaul and some really powerful people need to be sacked and older, by-the-numbers players need to be shown the door. Of course, since that isn’t going to happen anytime soon, things will continue to look bleaker by the day.
@Costas, Yeah, if Ferdinand had any sense of self-respect at all, he would retire from the International game with immediate effect. He should take a lesson from Scholesy who retired from England the moment he knew he was being left in favor of cunts like Lampard and Gerrard; he did the same when it came to United as well. If Rio doesn’t call it quits in the near future, I will almost lose all my remaining respect for him.
Good morning Balaji
are u a lakhmipathi balaji in half disguise?
@sandeep,
Lol! Just someone who is pissed at both the Indian cricket boards and English football boards. Mainly the former since I am in no way concerned about the latter.
MUFCOK – Spot on pal.
Does anyone even care about Ingerlund?
united breeds success,,so the scousers should know better and learn from our star men,wen all our players are fit they should automatically be in the England first eleven with the exception of Rio and Carrick ofcourse, who i believe their best days are behind them.It would be nice to see the likes of Jones,Wazza,Clevs,Welbeck,Smalling n Young achieve success in the international scene as well,,but first of Cepello needs to go..!!
International football is dead and buried in England. Club football is far more important to them and us fans. Dispite the players hating each other they never put in 100% because of the fear of injury. In some ways they are right to hold back. It’s far more important to have united players fit for the Anfield trip than watching crappy old England… I just can’t watch England anymore, in fact all international competitions are crap. what excitement has the last 5 or 6 world cups brought us? NOTHING… All international football is good for is using it for an excuse for us men to go to the pub and get smashed in the summer. I ask this question when Gerrard scores for England do us United fans celebrate? Thought not!! Most united fans have one love and there ain’t no room for England in there.
Scholesy, like Gary Nev before him, has hit the nail on the head in pointing out the higher standards of discipline and professionalism they experienced when playing from United as compared to England.
The England team is a ‘team’ anymore. It’s a collection of big money special interests – players, agents, media, advertisers and FA suits- that rarely delivers and almost always ends up screwing us over. To players, an England call up these days means more as a business opportunity, in terms of profile, than the honour of representing the country at the highest level. These guys take England supporters for mugs, although it has to be said more often than not the general public and England supporters often live up to that name.
PS. The rot set in with the arse-kissing of England managers by the likes of Kevin Keegan(as a player). A team within a team, the concept of undroppables – followed by a procession of knobs in the managers seat, post Bobby Robson. By all accounts the worthless ‘Arry is next up…
Despite for providing a procession of players for England, all United get out of the situation are injuries and serial disrespect to our manager and the club from the FA.
Mind you, it could be worse – I always look forward to the African cup of Nations as it usually means depletion of the Chelsea and Arsenal teams for some time plus their players returning half crocked.
Harry Redknapp will sort it out, no problemo. I guarantee England will win the next Euro tournament and then the World Cup.
Oh look, it’s time for my pills. Laters y’alls.
Is it any wonder that we get continually f**cked over by the FA on and off the field and a lot of utd fans despise the FA Flagship product, team:England!
That’s because international footy is a complete waste of time and in my opinion should be banned! Lower league fans especially have nothing in common with the international players- although I’m sure these fans are used to seeing better football being played at their clubs
The only reason Spain started winning was cos the Spanish team is now almost entirely Barca. When Raul and Morientes were in the squad the divisiveness was pretty obvious.
That said the English players aren’t as good as they’re made out to be. United’s success has always been more down to fergie than the quality of our players, and the few standouts through the years that seem to be able to singlehandedly win games (Giggs, Ronaldo) aren’t even English.
moral of the story. ENGLAND SUCKS
The problem with england is the media obsession with players personal lives.
Lads get such an image boost from england duty that they fail to have the hunger.
There was quite a discussion about the importance of Scot managers in the EPL.
It is simple, Scots managers know they have nothing if they are not successful, so they couldn’t give a toss about whether some primadona plays or not. Every england manager fails for this simple reason, they are afraid to leave lads off the team. Look at Cricket, they started leaving some obvious names off and low and behold england cricket is winning, who knew england could play cricket?
Scholes has it about right, to much about the players and not enough about the team. Fergie would have it sorted in 2 months, BUT wait?! Fergie could give a care to England, he’s Scots!
I can believe it.
Look at how the Real Madrid / Barça rivalry has ruined the Spain squad.
Oh, wait.
Something to get us through the International brake

Been a while since i commented on here.. Does anyone else think that maby SAF is trying to do with united what barca have done with spain (I dont follow england at all Ireland all the way
) but how many very talented united players play on the england squad.. I suppose if history has taught t us anything is that england still wouldn’t use our players as good as we would..
Balaji … if the BCCI keeps going the way it is, that will be the death of cricket. And my comment has nothing to do with them being Indian and me not. Too much greed there, greed for political power, for money. Too many people who put their own interests above the welfare of the sport.
As for Ingerlund, I do wish they’d get their bloody act together. Obviously, the Socceroos are never going to win anything important, and England’s the next obvious choice for me to support. But who wants to cheer those fucking serial losers? But I can’t bring myself to cheer for the Spanish, or the Germans, or who-the-fuck-else, and why should I?
But SAF is right when he says the world cups are boring. Who cares.
It affected me as well cos I’m not supporting England anymore ESPECIALLY if Stevie G. is captain. NO WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any body remember when we had 6 or 7 players playing for England during the golden era of Scholes, Becks, the Nevs, Butt, Cole and so on ? A large section of the England supporters stood up and started shouting ‘stand up if you hate Man U’ That was the last time I supported England and I tell you, where United are concerned I WILL NEVER FORGIVE AND NEVER FORGET, FULLSTOP !!!!!!
ZuluUtd-Malta I don’t support England either and never will as long as the useless, money grabbing waste of space Capello is in charge. I cannot stand the man and how on earth can anyone take him seriously when he bares such a striking resemblance to Dennis the Menace.
