Bastian Schweinsteiger made his Manchester United debut on the opening day of the season when he came on for Michael Carrick against Tottenham Hotspur. Old Trafford was on their feet to welcome him and Schweinsteiger has revealed how that made him feel.

For me, it was a big surprise to see how many supporters welcomed me with warmth and enthusiasm at the opening league game against Tottenham at Old Trafford. I can promise I’ll do everything I can using all my experience to try and help the club to reach the same international level as Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern.

Schweinsteiger is the first German to play for United, something he is very proud of.

That’s an absolute honour. I didn’t even know before making the move that no German has played here.
