For Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Brighton in the FA Cup, the designated ‘singing section’ of J Stand was moved to L Stand, where the away fans usually sit. Given the extra allocation required for cup games, the Brighton fans took the top tier of the East Stand.

For some time fans wanting to bring about changes to improve the atmosphere at Old Trafford have asked for this section of the ground to be taken from the away fans and given to the home crowd. The roof over the corner is great for acoustics, with the sound made trapped in the ground.

Given the freezing conditions, with fans losing the feeling in their fingers and legs early on, it would have been understandable if the atmosphere suffered. As it was, the volume from L Stand carried around the whole stadium as they sang throughout the 90 minutes.

In the second half, following a great stop from Sergio Romero, his name was sung for a good 15 to 20 minutes, as well as a Scott McTominay chant on repeat.

The logistics of segregation make this area ideal for the away fans to sit but the club needs to work out how there can be a permanent move for the more vocal fans in the ground to improve Old Trafford’s atmosphere.
