Singing Section Update

Fans United is a supporters consortium consisting of Manchester United fans groups, fanzines and supporters. We have been in talks with Manchester United officials about introducing a singing section to improve the atmosphere at Old Trafford.

The club have offered us the current away section at Old Trafford to use as a singing section next season and the aim is to bring back the atmosphere and colour of the old Scoreboard Paddock, making this section a fans area and raising the volume at Old Trafford.

The section will offer fans the chance to relocate and be seated with friends/family and more importantly, like minded vocal supporters. The section not only offers one of the best areas for acoustics within Old Trafford, it offers one of the better views too.

Manchester United’s official website now has a link for season ticket holders to officially register your interest. Once the official renewal process is in place, you will be contacted about your move and you will be given the opportunity to relocate seats so that you can sit together with friends or family.

The season ticket price for this area is likely to be £722, giving a matchday price of £38 per game. The area will be season ticket holders only, ensuring that the same fans are in there for every game. Whilst the section will not provide any under 16′s Junior tickets, the 16-20 reduced price ticket range will apply.

  2. Norwegian Devil says:

As I am one of the fans from outside of England, going to approx one game a season, I accept that my view is next to nothing in this matter. However, my opinion is that this is a good plan, I just wish they made the Stretford end the singing section.

  3. Voice of reason says:

Take the execs out of middle of stretford next – shd never have been there

  4. Redbilly says:

Norwegian Devil- there are fans in the Uk who don’t make a match per season. You make the effort at least once a season mate. Your opinion means as much as anyone else’s .

  5. Mikekelly12 says:

Did that a few days back. Want confirmation that I’m in there now!!! Let’s go GALAXY let’s go!!!

  6. Costas says:

Very good initiative. It is indeed one of the better areas of the ground in terls of acoustics and it shouldn’t be wasted on the away fans.

Everyone who follows our great club has an opinion and all are warranted regardless of how many games you’ve been to or go to. I for one agree with you! I think it will have an impact.

  8. MancunianRed7 says:

Its a fantastic idea and I hope it takes off. Will be great to get vocal supporters together and hopefully alot of homemade flags and banners start showing up.

Alot of people are worried or upset it isnt in the Stretford End, in my opinion the lads (and lasses) in the Stretford End will stay put as they wont want to leave the stretty. The new singing section is a god send for vocal supporters in the south/north stand who have no hope where they are now!

Worries me that on this forum some trival thread about a kit gets hundreds of replies, yet this important thread gets what 8 comments? people’s attitudes and values needs changing big time. The atmosphere of Old Trafford should be the supporters priority.

  9. neilT says:

We need to kick them foreigners out of OT and then it will be loud again, with everyone singing in the same language.

  10. Thad says:

Voice of reason is right-take the fucking corporate execs out of the stretford end, make it all standing as most stand anyway. Make the lower K stand standing, and reduce ticket prices accordingly. The atmosphere has changed on both of these sides since they started selling “coke” at half time, if they got a grip of that it would help too. As for the old family stand, happy days, let’s put the away fans where they use to be it might even raise a song from the south stand.

  11. FletchTHEMAN says:

@MancunianRed7 Well said mate. My understanding is that the location of the singing section is meant to augment the Stretty which already has a strong group of singers and reduce the influence of the away support that used to be in this part of the stand. The Singing Section is in the area where the away support used to be and has a roof above which markedly enhances the noise from the fans seated here. By moving United fans into this area you will not detract from the Stretty by will enhance the United support throughout the stadium. If effective, they may expand or add new singing sections in other harmonically advantagious locations.

I think it is a great idea… long overdue and very welcome.

  12. dannysoya LOVES SIAN MASSEY says:

why cant they just make stretty the singing section? it is flagship end of the stadium. whatever. anything to get OT loud again is perfect by me.

  13. Ajo Paul says:

FletchTHEMAN says: – Nailed it. Its a shame when we get outsung by away support. And when chips are down it always helps the united cause.

As a sidenote, its astonishing united has never won a game this season coming from behind !

  14. rooneyibk says:

I’m a st holder at east stand lower and i would love to have a singing force nearby.
i think the only problem is that the st holders from tier 3-saf stand have to search now another place for them and their familys. it is/was one of 2 sectors where you could buy a junior st.

  15. rooneyibk says:

    @ ajopaul
do you not remember the community shield vs city? 2-0 down at half time. for my point of view the 2-2 was the best goal of the season.

  16. Ben says:

Cheers for the update, as a ST holder in SAF stand T3, I will be moving whether I like it or not, so ive popped my name down for the Singing Section. I love going to the pub before hand and singing my little heart out for the lads but then when we get to OT, all the singers get split up and the atmosphere is so often diluted.
Hopefully the singing section will have the desired effect and get OTs atmosphere to the level it can be. It’s always rocking against Liverpool so why not everyone else.

    Now – come on QPR!

  17. Redbilly says:

Sparky will be singing if he stays up and pockets that million in bonus. Come on sparky .

  18. Gorse Hill Red says:

The view is very good in the away end,I was right next to the Wolves fans this season and was impressed with the view they had.

So the away fans will be stuck in the third tier of the North Stand next season; I would not want to be in the second tier when we play the Scousers.

  19. Redbilly says:

Gorse hill- the scousers should be below, where they belong.

  20. PeteyRedRed says:

Sick of reading about Manchester City. Toure’s leaving, then staying. The one consistent truth the tabloids seem to leave out is they are all cunts at shitty. Shoddy journalism.

  21. Little Red Ant says:

My old stomping ground until it was converted and we moved to the Stretford Paddock

“We are the scoreboard, the scoreboard paddock”
“can you hear the Stretford sing, nooo noooo, can you hear the Stretford sing nooo. noooo” etc..
Happy memories – all they need to do now is bring back the bar at the back :o )

  22. Giggs12Gerrard0 says:

    MancunianRed7

Completely agree mate look at the complete lack of interest for a good atmosphere at OT. I sit in lower K and its a joke, we have about 50 lads bang on form and get the atnmosphere going for the rest of the stand. The stretty end needs to start singnig about United again rather than Tevez and the scousers.

Last week some cunt had a go as his kid was three rows behind me and heard me swear????? Firstly i am a father myself so wouldnt want to do that but fuck me sit in the family stand, you can shield his ears from 70.000 fans singing the odd swear word.

It was only 2008 in which the semi final against Barca the atmosphere was better than I have ever known at OT. 2010 City in the carling cup as good as we have ever heard even giong back to the old days.

  23. 0161-Jon says:

Interesting idea and I like the thought, moving the away fans to the top of the north stand is a terrible idea though. Great to make an effort to concentrate the singers to help raise the volume but I believe the away fans are also very important in the atmosphere, if we can’t see or hear them (their songs from up there will float away over the south stand) then that’s just shit.

  24. Albert Ross says:

    0161-Jon

I understand that your experience will be diminished should you not hear the away fans.
Far more important though, is that the 22 players won’t hear them either.

Perhaps you can take a walkman with you, and a tape of the opposition fans chants?
Then you could burn it after the game, in a ritualistic offering of thanks to the football gods.

  25. 0161-Jon says:

    Albert Ross

I’m just saying that without away fans being heard, the venom isn’t as potent and therefore the atmosphere is not as good. If you can’t hear any away fans it will end up like Ice Hockey in North America where you get so few away fans due to the distances that it becomes sterile. Watching a football match with no away fans (which is what it could end up feeling like) to hurl abuse at as far as I am concerned would be shite. It was tested for the Villa game a few weeks back and it was crap.

Singing section will be great to help lift the atmosphere which these days is often so flat but the away fans position needs to be considered more. Top tier east stand (like for the euros) would be much better.

  26. 0161-Jon says:

And the away fans singing provides just as much motivation to our lads as it does theirs. Think of how good Ronnie became when feeding of the venom he was subject to!

  27. 0161-Jon says:

    *off

  28. Albert Ross says:

0161-Jon – that makes a lot of sense.

Maybe it becomes a bit like choir practice, getting everyone to sing in unison, rather than a competition almost as fierce, and more passionate, than that on the field.

How about if he away fans get the front 5 rows, but we turn their seats around to face up the stand towards endless rows of our fans belting out chants? In their face, so to speak.

  29. RedRobot says:

I gave up my season ticket in K stand many moons ago because the atmosphere was becoming like a cricket match or that of a trip to the cinema as the yellow jackets more and more expelled the characters who were core to great atmosphere, people with names like Tweaky and Jimmy Lizard!! They were basically loud, drunk and would try and abuse Pete Boyle all day long from above!

  30. King Eric says:

neilt – Yeah great narrow minded racist view pal. A credit to United.

    MancunianRed7- Top post.

  31. King Eric says:

Gorse Hill Red – Ha. Yeah feel sorry for those in tier 2 when the vermin rock up. I am in Tier 2 , mainly because my old man buys my season ticket and won’t move but luckily I am covered by the cantilever roof.

  32. King Eric says:

Giggs12 – Hello mate. That Tevez somg makes me cringe. Sick of singing about that cunt. I don’t join in with that song either. Thank fuck the 2We’ll do what we want” song seems to have fucked off.

  33. MancunainRed7 says:

    @0161-Jon

That was my first worry when I heard about the away supporters being moved, but lwhen you think about it the majority of away supporters turn up and have a go at our support/club week in week out, yet it doesnt get a response our atmosphere is still shocking. The only games the away support has an impact on our support is the liverpool/city games and we’re always up for it then anyway.

I wasnt at the Villa match when they tested having the away support in the tier 3, but my mate is up there and he said our supporters up there were joining in chants more and a few more standing. Obviously not a massive change but a noticiable one. its been very easy for our supporters to hide up there and ignore the atmosphere but having the away support up there might actually wake the north stand up! And if the Streford End feels they arent singing on their own anymore thanks to the new section it could have a snowball affect, then again I could just be getting carried away…

Also, I agree sick to fucking death of hearing songs about tevez/city/scousers. Time to bring back the classics “who the fuck are man united” “we’ll never die” “forever and ever” and the calypso. I think if we lose the title this year it will give all our supporters that little bit more passion, i always think our atmosphere is better when we’re chasing the title rather than holding the title.

  34. redevil_83 says:

so thrilled its gonna happen. been wiating for this long time

  35. OHH AHH Cantona says:

Where do the away fans go?

  36. James21 says:

Already applied. Getting fed up of people moving seats next to me because I’m too noisy. Fuck em, if I don’t get in this section I’ll have to stay put and piss em off more.

    Norwegian
Doesn’t matter if you make 1 game or 20, everybodys situations are different, I’m lucky to be able to afford a ST but hasn’t always been the case I’ve had to endure the silence of South Stand in the past. :)

  37. MancunainRed7 says:

I honestly dont think ive ever seen anyone in the south stand sing. Seems to be the place all the tourists get seated.

Anyone planning on making any flags or banners for the new section or just anywhere in Old Trafford? Ive got one under construction.

  38. mufc m41 says:

I’ve already put in for a move to this section along with mates. Its well needed.
