Sir Alex Ferguson Beats Paisley and Clough… Again

Earlier in the day, I reported on how The Daily Mail deemed Sir Alex Ferguson the best ever manager in British football.

They then wanted to confirm their findings so asked the people over at Championship manager what they thought. The results varied, except for who they ranked as the best.

1. Sir Alex Ferguson

Why? – Sir Alex Ferguson is the most successful manager in British football history. Replaced Ron Atkinson as United’s manager on November 6, 1986. Has won 10 Premier League titles, five FA cups, three League Cups and two Champions Leagues. Won the Cup Winners’ Cup with both Aberdeen and Man Utd.

Favourite quote – After winning the Champions League in 1999: ‘I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it. Football. Bloody hell.’

Postition in TDM list: 1.

2. Bob Paisley

Why? – Served Liverpool for 44 years. As manager, between 1974 and 1983, he won six league titles, three European Cups, one UEFA Cup and three League Cups.
Favourite quote – ‘If you’re in the penalty area and aren’t sure what to do with the ball, just stick it in the net, and we’ll discuss your options afterwards.’

Postition in TDM list: 3.

3. Bill Shankly

Why? – Manager of Liverpool between 1959 and 1974. The club won three league titles, two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup under Shankly. Retired after winning the 1974 FA Cup Final.
Favourite quote – ‘If you are first, you are first. If you are second you are nothing.’

Postition in TDM list: 4.

4. Sir Matt Busby

Why? – Played for both Man City and Liverpool as a player. Manager of United for 24 years from 1945 to 1969. Rebuilt team after the Munich air crash. Won the European Cup.
Favourite quote – On George Best: ‘It was a very simple team talk. All I used to say was: Whenever possible, give the ball to George.’

Postition in TDM list: 5.

5. Brian Clough

Why? – Most well known for his success as manager of both Derby County and Nottingham Forest. Won the European Cup twice as manager of Forest. Clough won the League with both Derby and Forest. The Forest title win was in his first season after promotion.
Favourite quote – ‘I wouldn’t say I was the best manager in the business. But I was certainly in the top one.’

Postition in TDM list: 2.

    bob paisley’s quote is a classic, has a excellent record aswell
    but i think that has something to do with getting handed an excellent team

    Actually looking at it, as much as Paisley & Shankly have achieved with Liverpool, Clough’s achievement surely beats them hands down. But of course Sir Alex wins for me. You can argue that his achievements with Utd are on par with the rest, but the thing that wins it for Sir Alex is what he did with Aberdeen

    Interesting to see that the 24 years (1959 – 1983) of Shankley and Paisely, Liver-shit-l won:
    9 Leagues;
    3 Euro Cups;
    2 UEFA Cups;
    2 FA Cups;
    3 League Cups

    Fergie, in less time, has won:
    10 Leagues;
    2 Euro Cups;
    1 Euro Cup Winners’;
    5 FA Cups;
    3 League Cups

    I think that shows Fergie is better than both Paisley and Shankley put together – but another Euro Cup will put the whole discussion to bed.

    Fergie is simply NUMBER ONE!

    interesting topic. Longevity is part of class. It seemed like they take turns to grace the Premier League. And I hope the next one will also be ours.

  7. Gordie says:

    In no way do I want to dis our manager, because we have had so much joy and success under his leadership and I hope it contines for a few more years yet. However, I reckon that Bob Paisley should be number one. Why?
    In only NINE years he won the League 6 times and the European Cup 3 times. Fergie has taken 23 years to rack up 10 League titles and 2 (hopefully 3 at the end of this season). One other thing about Paisley is that he was able to achieve this after taking over from Shankley. There was no repite for him, Shankley out, Paisley in, bish, bash, bosh . There it is Bob, now pick it up and run with it. Which he did to devastating effect. Finally, United HAVE to employ Strachan or Choccy as the successor to SAF because the one thing the Top 4 have in common is that they are all Scots!

  8. Marq says:

    Well, Gordie, if that is your opinion, shouldn’t the credit go to Shankley? It was Shankley who built the core of that team and Paisley simply let it run.
