Smalling: Hopefully we can play together for a few years

Ahead of the official confirmation that Phil Jones had signed for Manchester United, Chris Smalling claimed he was very pleased to hear that he was on his way.

The defensive pairing put in a good performance for the England U-21s last night in their 1-1 draw with Spain.

Smalling is 21-years-old whilst Jones is only 19, meaning that potentially we have our defence sorted for the next decade or more, something which Chris hopes for.

“It’s brilliant [that Jones seems destined for United],” said Smalling. “I’ve really enjoyed playing with him and it’s hard to think he’s only 19. Phil and I have been pretty good together for many games now. It’s been disappointing that Micah’s not been able to come [to the European Under-21 Championship] but Phil’s come in and done really well and we’ve been able to set our stall out. Hopefully we can play together for a few years.”

Phil Jones was eye-catching as an 18-year old in the center of the Blackburn defence two seasons ago. Unlike Chris Smalling – whose debut for Fulham against Chel$ki was “spoiled” by an own goal – Jones is younger and already has a lot of EPL experience. The pair – along with Jonny Evans – should provide a pretty smooth transition from the Rio/Vidic defensive cornerstone to TheNewUTD. ALong with David De Gea, the defensive future looks to be well-sorted.

  2. Whiteside says:

Good on the pair of them, legends of the future hopefully.

Love the cliche ‘setting our stall out’ footballers are all market traders in their spare time.

  3. Ash says:

Wow what a defence we will be having in our future.
    De gea(This is also done)
    Rafael smalling Jones Fabio
Then add evans and tom thorpe to that.
You know sir alex is making easy for our future manager whoever he may be.
Now lets sign some mid fielders.
    UNITED FOREVER

  4. Whiteside says:

Jones does a good line in gurning. Vida’s long-term replacement in the looking-hard department.

  5. Bobby says:

Will be used as central midfielder at least for 1 or 2 seasons before Pogba is ready then at the central defense when finally Rio’s knees can not hold, the feature is bright.

  6. Balaji Sivaraman says:

@Ash, Although I sound like a broken record, what we’re seeing this summer (and to a large extent the last also) is precisely the reason why many of us here hate when anybody says something wrong about Sir Alex Ferguson. No other manager, and I mean no other, can come close to Sir Alex in term of his meticulous planning, research and the thought-process involved in signing players. God Bless Him for eternity and beyond.

Is it wrong that I had a massive orgasm imagining the line-up that Ash posted?

  7. FletchTHEMAN says:

Smalling and Jones looked class anchoring the U21s v Spain. Except for the goal, they absorbed everything put out against them. Not bad at all really. Will only get better in my view. Just need to work hard like Smalling has. No body is too good that they can’t get better.

Welome home to Phil. Hope all the United boys at the U21s do some serious bonding.

  8. Rax says:

@ Ash – The average of your back 5 is just 20 years old!!! Fucking outstanding.

They should also have bags of experience behind them to provide good protection when the (even) younger lads step up.

This shit is getting seriously exciting now.

  9. King Eric says:

I love Smalling,. He was fucking superb last night. A future rolls royce of a player like Rio. Excellent on the ball.

  10. Zibbie says:

@Balaji Is it wrong that I had a massive orgasm imagining the line-up that Ash posted?

No not at all, if it was an unassisted natural occurring spontaneous event.

  11. King Eric says:

Fletch – Hello mate. Bit harsh on the pair for the goal. It was Mancienne who got lost and blocked off! That Rose was fucking shite.

  12. Zibbie says:

@King Eric rolls royce how cool hearing that from you, it gives me goose bumps….
As a kid we had a dog named Bentley he was 1/2 German Shepard and Rhodesian Ridge Back and he was the Rolls Royce of dogs.

  13. Anawarhero says:

Two new ferdinands for Manchester United.

  14. King Eric says:

Zibbie – Ha. Nice dog that I bet mate. Just out of interest I have a border Colly.

  15. Zelh says:

acording to reports in spain and england barca has signed Rossi. And they went only for sanchez to dump rossi’s pricetag.

  16. WHAT ??? says:

Whiteside @ 15:41 bang on mate can’t have any silly looking cunts at the back can we

@ King Eric – I like this new generation of players in the England shirt, even Witlshire. Its the all the 1966 bollocks that comes with the seniors. How many times have the Germans won it? Fucking Hell. I hope these Lads enjoy playing for England while it IS enjoyable. Between Sven and the Sun they pissed the last generations talent up the wall.

  17. T4M says:

    The future.

  18. King Eric says:

What – Hello Paul, how are you? Yeah I dont actually mind them and seeing as though we had four or five last night I actually wanted them to win. Unlike the full national Ingerlund team.

  19. Zibbie says:

@King Eric nice the smartest of all dogs.

  20. Zibbie says:

@T4M any twitter news? Sanchez, Pato anything out there?

  21. temesgen says:

wow…i think the defense job done!
Advise for SAF,pls give playing time for ravel morrison…currently no united midfielder can play like him.realy he’ll be our messi.

  22. T4M says:

Zibbie,Udinese claim no official bids have been made for Sanchez. The media has been feeding us bullshit.Barca are skint. They stupidly announced their budget of €45m.Udinese will probably use that as starting price but we have to wait and see.

  23. WHAT ??? says:

All good mate, yeah you can’t help but want the under 21′s to win its not their fault. Having so many United boys on display helped as well. Jones and Smalling looked solid, two top buys. No Grease, No foreign accents, but top top quality purchases nonetheless.

  24. Ash says:

    @Balaji
You know Why Sir alex is special? Not only because he is a great manager but because he thinks about the welfare for his and our club Manchester united.
Look at liverpool what happened to them in 90′s.Fergie doesnt want that to happen with us once he leaves so he knows the best thing is to build a club.
I want the likes of pogba, tunni, keane and morrison to develop and become our star player under Sir alex so that the new manager doesnt ignore these talented kids.
Overall I can confidently say Future is RED Of united and It IS BRIGHT.

  25. Zibbie says:

    @T4M thanks mate.

  26. WHAT ??? says:

    Rio, Vidic, Evra…..
Evans, Da Silva Twins, Smalling, Jones…

    SOLID.

9 players for 4 spots, and they all play and their all happy, thats the United way. Just because we bring somebody in doesn’t mean somebody else has to leave. We’re not RENT BOYS.

  27. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

A few years? Many years please. All hail Sir Alex, cos our future is looking really solid and promising. Haha Smalling talking like he’s an old man. Jones is “only 19″. Come on lad, you’re only 21.

  28. Balaji Sivaraman says:

@Ash, Exactly mate. If we know Sir Alex and most of us do, then I am pretty sure he is planning for who his successor should be also. I would imagine that Scholes and Ole being appointed as coaches is part of that plan. As I said, God bless him for eternity.

@KingOfStretfordEnd, Hahaha, that was the first thought that came to me also. Who does he think he is? Ryan Giggs. Whose footballing experience is greater than Phil Jones’ age

  29. ginger pele says:

jones young de gea NOW the big one who is it gonna be guys????? MODRIC, SNIEJDER, NASRI, OZIL……………..?????? SIR ALEX i TRUST end of whetever he does i support guranDAMNtee that 100%

  30. Zibbie says:

Fuck the Heineken commercial comes on and like a Pavlov dog I think a CL game is on. Fuck.

  31. FletchTHEMAN says:

King Eric, Harsh indeed. Some angles suggest the spanish lad been watching “hand o g*d” videos!
Glad that Pearce didn’t succumb to those temptations in the post match. Anyway, I didn’t say anything about fault for the goal. Only that our lads were the center of defense. They absorbed everything else and the game started to shift over to england. Still required a moment of real class from Wellbeck to get the point. 1st minute or 96th minute, it is all good.

  32. JC says:

As far as i can tell United still has a first refusal clause on Rossi, funny that if Barca were to lose him cuz we blocked it no?

  33. JC says:

That was a response to Zehl’s comment earlier… and by block i mean match the offer and the lad can stay at Villareal or come back to United.

  34. Zibbie says:

    cock block Barca. Cool.

  35. RedDevil4Lyfe says:

    FUTURE UTD TEAM

  36. scan74 says:

know its been said plenty but smalling was absoulte quality last night and conducts himself really well made some really top class challenges

Jones did well also great 2 think we got these pair lined up togerher for the next decade

    trust in SAF

  37. Busby babes says:

Yes smalling and jones certainly have the ablity to be a mainstay in our defence in years to come, when vidic and rio pass down the torch lol. Two young center halfs who are composed on the ball has well as being good defensively. I also still have 100per cent confidence’s in johnny evans admitadly and by his own admission he under performed last season but he has enough about him to learn and improve from that.

do you think we’ll still go for varane, and maybe loan him back to a ligue 1 side like been reported or will we not pursue him now.

  38. Stevie the CUNT says:

Don’t sign anyone that doesn’t want to come play for us.
    Screw Ozil.
Dominant CM with a great freekick especially.

  39. Manchuchu says:

While I am ecstatic about our defensive recruitments, there is still an elephant in the room.

    Central midfield. What gives??

I don’t think muppet wet dreams like Sneijder, etc will be on the cards.

I’ll be happy if one solid English midfielder alongside someone like Cleverly is the route taken.

  40. warrenbeezy says:

johnny evans is garbage. has nobody else notices this yet? i can;t decide who is worse, johnny evans or wes brown. GARBAGE I TELL YA!!!

    United FOREVER
