Chris Smalling is loving life at United and the response to the players in our pre-season in America has made him realise just how big the club is.
“It’s been really exciting,” Smalling said. “When you join a new club you have to get to know everybody and I think I’ve surprised myself with how I’ve got on with all the players. I’ve played five or six games over pre-season so hopefully that has bedded me into the squad. I’m really enjoying it. The stature of the club is such that when we went over to America we were playing in front of 50 or 60,000 fans – it’s wowed me in terms of how big the club is. Hopefully I can take my chance and show that I belong here.”

Honestly think he got so many games in pre-season because I think Fergie will use him a lot this season, especially with Rio looking like his days of sustained playing are over.
Even if we take Rio out the equation, we are still left with:
Brown
O’Shea
Smalling
Vidic
Evans
5 players from the senior squad that can comfortably play centre-half, with Vidic and Evans being the main pairing (w/o Rio) and Smalling should be able to slip in for a few games (hopefully around 10 – 12) when Evans or Vidic need a rest.
Although I have my doubts about his ability, I hope his little fairytale career continues to go on the upward.

he had a good pre-season from what i saw.
started off great getting to every ball and carrying it forward over the half way line.
seemed like his confidence got shaken after giving away that penalty and he tended not to pass the ball forward, only backwards and sideways.
still some time spent playing with vida or rio will sort that that out, see good things coming from the lad.
Hasn`t got one yet. Still have to undergo medical first, I read some some days ago.
Who is Smalling hugging? Obertan? Doesn’t look like it?
