Smalling Out Of Euros

Chris Smalling will miss Euro 2012 after it has been confirmed the groin injury he sustained in Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Swansea won’t heal in time.

Smalling may still be involved in the Olympic squad though after Ferguson has refused participation in both competitions to our players.

I actually think Chris could’ve done with the game time and the high-pressure experience. Certainly deserved a place in the squad too IMO.

Let’s hope he gets a good pre-season under his belt.

  2. Brigadier19 says:

Kanchelskis agreed mate, the extra game time would have been useful in a high pressure environment. Get better soon Chrissy Smalls. May the force be with you

  3. CedarsDevil says:

Agreed the experience would have been good for him but a good rest and a decent pre season would be better…….. I am sure the lad must be gutted but as supporters we are selfish and hence…

    United >>>>>England

  4. AntiScouser says:

more injuries to the defenders, rediculous…

  5. Giles Oakley says:

I was hoping Smalling and the others would play in the Euros, something to make it worthwhile watching. Tough on the lad, who’s had bad luck with injuries, disrupting his development and weakening his performances this season. Also, I’d have liked our players to benefit from the influence of Hodgson, who really is a good coach. I hope all our lads learn from his experience. Plus, it’ll be galling if there are no United players in the England team that wins the trophy!! (No need to reply to that …)

  6. mara says:

I dont see that bad as it looks like. he will be fresh for new season…

  7. Foggy United says:

Good. Fuck England. United > England

This England set up does no favors for United.

  8. slim says:

gutted by this to be honest. the lad should be out there. the experience would have been immense.
would be just as fresh if not fresher than showing up for pre season and clocking up air miles like George clooney.

  9. NotoriousRedDevil says:

I feel bad for Smalling here. He’s had a stop start season for several reasons. It will probably mean he’ll be going to the Olympics.

  10. Albert Ross says:

“It’s a huge blow,” Evra admitted. “Chris is one of the strongest defenders we have on the squad. I’m really sad for him but, to be fair, I’m happy he won’t play against me and France in the Euros!

“I have to be honest. When he told me he was injured and would miss the game against Sundelrand, I said: ‘No Chris, we need you’.

“And then he told me he’d also miss the Euros and I just said, ‘Thanks! Well done’ [laughs] You always have to find the silver lining.”

  11. Redbilly says:

Well . I feel for the lad but I am not the most patriotic if supporters, I only care about united. Happy for other clubs to enjoy the plaudits as and when England or team GB. Win anything. Sure many would disagree .

  12. Costas says:

Smalling is a lot like Rio.Unfortunately, that also extends to how injury prone he is. Too many injuries for a 22 year old ffs.

  13. Albert Ross says:

    Redbilly – it’s a tough debate, I feel.

It’s better for United if we don’t start the season with injured, tired or ill-prepared players, so that over-riding factor sways it to the “United Only” corner.

Against that, is the fact that no one is more “of United” than our current players are. Their dreams of glory with United are our dreams too. They are our team, and they want to achieve international recognition, so it feels a little un-United to wish against their dreams.

I am so fond of our players, that I instinctively want them to fulfill their dreams.
Not at a cost to United, please God!

  14. Redbilly says:

Albert Ross – I understand where you coming from. Personally, I am not the most patriotic of individuals, that’s me. However I do empithise with the players who desire simply to play for their country in the euros world cup or olympics. As I said I am selfish with thus but given the choice of England winning euros , or olympics at the expense of our progress , It has to be the club . As I said I’m aware I’m selfish concerning this matter.

  15. Albert Ross says:

Redbilly, and so you damn well should be!

Looking out for United is looking out for yourself. We are United.

There is no more important sporting event than the 50 + games a year we feature in.

Everything else is mere trivia to chat about in passing.

  16. Redbilly says:

Albert Ross – I can’t fault a word if your last post :-)

  17. Albert Ross says:

We lead the good life as United supporters. It is a very good life.

  18. OHH AHH Cantona says:

More importantly Smalling won’t be available for Sunderland.
I don’t see why that wasn’t what the article was named, get your priorities right Scott ;)

  19. Albert Ross says:

OHH AHH Cantona – is Smalling not available for Sunderland?

    just kidding!
