Smalling: Rio Is The Main Man

Chris Smalling put in another impressive display whilst filling in for Rio Ferdinand in Marseille last night, but acknowledges he won’t be displacing the England captain from the first XI just yet.

“When you get the shirt and a position in the team you don’t want to give it up,” said Smalling. “I understand that Rio is the main man. But when he got injured it was time for me to step up. They are big shoes to fill. Hopefully through my performances and the sort of games and massive occasions I have been playing in, I repay the manager’s faith and justify him playing me. I know I will have to bide my time but I am always going to be ready because no player wants to be sitting on the bench.”

If RoM had existed when we conceded 6 at Southampton, Mrs Gibson would have been on the lam.

  2. smartalex says:

Did you also smell that wayne? Something spicy and delectable wafted through the forum.

  3. fergie is the boss says:

FletchTHEMAN – unless the arabs have the money then none of them. If we are getting a takeover its got to be a really rich guy that can wipe out all our debts. Because we have to be owned by a mega rich guy because fergie will be gone in 4 years time.

  4. willierednut says:

Donald Trump? Fuck him and his wig.

  5. wayne says:

@smartalex yes mate i’m getting high just thinking about it soft like putty, fuck i haven’t had that for years in canada tons of pot but its hard to find good hash

  6. willierednut says:

Eskimo pies were lovely, after a spliff. fucking munchies!

  7. smartalex says:

You can make your own wayne. Bit of a mission, depending on how you approach it. Consider it like making wine, an art, and a hobby! I’m no expert, but there’s plenty of good free advice going. Anyway, it does become a whole new ball (and chain) game then.

  8. Busby babes says:

Scholesy agreed to stay on for another year?

  9. smartalex says:

Busby babes – If he has we may well hear it at SAF’s Friday morning press conference.
As far as the current rumour goes, all the reports refer to a Sun piece, that says Paul has told Sir Alex he will sign, attached to an unflattering snap of our icon. I’m not linking it as it is twaddle, undeserving of any hits.

  10. Busby babes says:

Cheers for that m8 i read it on truly reds, i aint heard anything until i come across that article,

  11. YorYor says:

Apparently, Smalling was a mad buy by SAF, who gave away quite a few penalties during his plays with Fulham and wasn’t deemed good enough to be a regular.
We’ll see the hounds after his blood once he suffers his poor season like all players who join United no doubt will.

  12. Busby babes says:

yoryor could’nt elaborate to much on that m8, but i rember him playing against chelsea for fulham and his own goal aside which was unfortunate he was outstanding, with regards to him not playing much at fulham, the deal was agreed last january for him to come here, maybe with that in mind the ball was put in motion on fulhams behalf to plan ahead with hindsight knowing smalling future laid else where. just a theory.

  13. Dave Malaysia says:

@smartalex, errr…. say dude ,sounds weird, the words to the song,errrrr….. are u singing love songs to Cedars? is there something ROM needs to know about u two? :) ;)

@CedarsDevil ,Yes the women of lebanon, makes me want to swim over.

The Qatari bid,not to keen on our club being owned by a goverment and being part of some competition with uae.
Something about this whole thing dosent sound right.

Besides the Glazers might actually be turning the corner if they actually cleared the dreaded PIKS,just hope today they tell us just how they did it. And they have just getting the benefits of the increased commercial deals . Would seem unwise for them to sell.

  14. manutdfan1991 says:

Out of topic but i just wanna say i’m pretty sure that we will beat marseille at OT with a scoreline of 1-0

  15. Jeet says:

PS: Anyone of you come to India – gimme a twinkle, good times promised – you got an open invitation!

  16. Mrad_leb says:

    lol guys.. am lebanese

  17. CedarsDevil says:

    Jeet, lol mate…

Dave, swim here whenever you want, will happily show you around! As for the songs its a shared love for Pink Floyd and a vegetation of green color that is close to both smaralex’s heart and mine!

Mrad, welcome aboard buddy, nice to have a fellow Cedars red here. Most of the younger generation here have joined the Chelsea wagon, some have started shifting to City now! plastic to say the least!

    Morning all you reds

  18. vika09 says:

Still waiting for Rio to twitter about Smalling being the man.

  19. Mrad_leb says:

@ cedarsdevil you’re right mate abt the younger generation..u didnt mention barca too.. am a red since 94 where r u from ??

  20. CedarsDevil says:

Mrad, yes I did forget about Barca, well spotted…..

You ask where I am from, does it matter?

  21. CedarsDevil says:

Just watching our game v Wigan away last season, we have missed Tony V and for the last few games Park as well…..

Fucking love United, its a life style not a hobby

  22. Costas says:

Fergie gave an update about the injuries. Here’s how things stand for now:

Ryan Giggs – back v Wigan
Michael Owen – back v Wigan
Rio Ferdinand – back v Liverpool
Jonny Evans – back v Liverpool
Ji-sung Park – back in two weeks
Antonio Valencia – possibly back in two weeks
Anderson – back in three weeks

  23. Costas says:

    @Cedars

Hi mate. Wigan games have been enjoyable to watch over the years. It’s probably because we’ve won every game against them in the EPL. I hope that doesn’t change tomorrow and we make it 12 out of 12.

  24. CedarsDevil says:

    Costas

You stat genius, thanks. You say possibly in 2 weeks for Tony V, can you be clearer? We have missed him

  25. Costas says:

    From twitter:

Latest #MUFC financial results show the gross debt has fallen to £489.4m.

  26. Costas says:

    @Cedars

    Here’s what Sir Alex said:

“Antonio is doing well in training but it’s difficult to assess when he’ll be back. We have to make a decision on when to play him in terms of his own confidence after being out for so long. He could be back in two weeks hopefully.”

So it’s probably a psycholigical issue at the moment. I think a Reserves game would ease him back nicely. It’s sad that Rio won’t make the Chelsea game. Smalling has done very well, but I don’t want to burden him too much. Going up against Torres and Anelka will be a big test for him.

  27. CedarsDevil says:

What is twitter? Last I heard it was a new type of mosquito? Bloody bugs annoy the crap out of me

  28. Costas says:

Lol, no it’s not a bug. It’s quite informative actually. I follow some United journalists or bloggers because they post the latest United news.

Anyway, that’s the word going around about our debt. And the cash balance is 134.5 million.

  29. Costas says:

And some quotes about the ownership:

The Owners remain fully committed to their long-term ownership of the club. No discussions have taken place, Manchester United is not for sale and the Owners will not entertain any offers.”

Expected comments. Plenty of numbers going around then. From what I gather, we’ve bought back 24 milllion of the bonds and the revenue was up by 7.1%.

  30. CedarsDevil says:

Cheers for keeping things in perspective Costas….. But again excuse my ignorance, what does a ‘cash balance’ mean? Money we can spend?

  31. Costas says:

    @Cedars

I think that’s it mate. The money in the bank show to speak. I believe it was 110 million a while back. I don’t know a lot about this stuff either. Hopefully someone here will analyze things better than me.

  32. CedarsDevil says:

Analyse better than you? I will die waiting for ‘that’ person to be born…..

  33. Costas says:

Thanks mate. But I don’t know a lot about it, really. I’d prefer to analyze how Fergie will rotate his squad over the next few games.

One more thing. No word on the results about how the PIKS got payed.

  34. KingOfStretfordEnd says:

Great, i really hope he’s consistent. After Evans, i’m a bit cautious about being too excited. We’ve enjoyed the services of Vida and Rio for so long and of course for many more years to come, but acquiring a apt replacement is nevertheless wondeful.

  35. smartalex says:

Good day Dave Malaysia, Jeet, CedarsDevil, Costas! Good day RoM! Welcome Mrad_leb!

Just awoken from the black haze, Jeet, stupefying, I tell you!

Thanks for all the news updates Costas. Means I can relax now, trawl later.

Dave, I was singing Pink Floyd, and then Peter Tosh (or Bob Marley, depending which key works for you.)

CedarsDevil, cash balance is the change your wife doesn’t give you after paying the bills, or the change your kids ‘didn’t realize’ you wanted back. Seriously though, an account balance that represents cash alone, as distinct from an account balance that includes money owed but as yet unpaid. Put it this way , what you have, minus what you owe, which is usually only positive before you open the mail.

  36. Costas says:

    @smartalex

Hi mate. It was my pleasure to provide information to the max. ;)

  37. smartalex says:

Thanks a million, Costas, and Maximilian.

  38. Jeet says:

Morning Smartalex! Not stupefying enough to prevent you from rubbing it in, I see! Do you dig grateful dead? Here’s what I am listening to:

I was born in the desert
    Raised in a lion’s den
I was born in the desert
    Raised in a lion’s den

    Oh, my number one occupation
Is stealing women from their men

Well, I’m a wanted man in Texas,
busted jail and I’m gone for good.
Said, I’m a wanted man in Texas,
busted jail and I’m gone for good.
Well, the sheriff couldn’t catch me,
but his little girl sure wished she could.

Well now the doctor call me crazy,
    sometimes I am, sometimes I ain’t,
Said now the doctor call me crazy,
    sometimes I am, sometimes I ain’t,
Yes, and the preacher man call me sinner
but his little girl call me saint.

  39. willierednut says:

In honor of RedScot, get the Glazers out!

  40. smartalex says:

Well Jeet, I wouldn’t classify myself as a dyed in the wool DeadHead, but I do have a soft spot for the psychadelic godfathers!

I rubbed it in last night, think I’ll give it a break for now!

  41. willierednut says:

Rubbed It in? I hope you took your time? You never can tell with these things. Ce la vi, Ce la vi, said the old folks, you never can tell.

  42. smartalex says:

This slow poke took the slow boat to china, time stood still.
